Although the staff is excellent and very helpful, the noise is very disruptive. Would be nice if they had someone outside reminding passing people that this is a hotel and to stop shouting all throughout the night.

Very unhappy with this hotel. It was advertised as a four-star hotel and had several good reviews on your website. Once we arrived, we were told our room was on the "mezzanine level" which turned out to be the basement. The underground level looked like the third-class level of the Titanic. I'm positive that if the hotel started sinking, they would […] have locked us in. This area of the hotel was also undergoing renovations which made it look like a construction zone. Our room was the tiniest room we stayed in during our 8 days in England. It has no thermostat and instead had an oscillating fan on the desk. We left the fan on non-stop because it was 80 degrees inside. The hotel brochure indicated that free wifi was available but we couldn't pick up the signal. I called reception and they advised that rooms on the mezzanine level don't get access to wifi..figures! Thankfully, we only had one night in The Palace. For what it's worth, the lobby and exterior of the hotel looked very posh. Perhaps it would be a nice place to stay as long as you can insure you won't end up banished to the servants quarters. Grand old building that was not built as a hotel, but rather an insurance office building. Public spaces have wonderful Victorian era glazed tiles. However, it feels more like like Hogwarts than a hotel, as reception sometimes will give guests maps to find their rooms. However, we found that following the signs tended to be more helpful, but even then […] some rooms just seemed to disappear. I was one of six different people in one party staying at hotel. We all had very different experiences depending on what room we were given. There appears to be a great deal of variability with the rooms and one can only guess how to be sure to get one that is of higher quality. Biggest issue was with thermostats that did not work. As one person said, her thermostat had two settings: heat and heat. And this was during an unusual warm period in Manchester. And of course, all of the windows are sealed shut. Room was very large and comfortable enough, but certainly felt a bit tattered. Bathroom was also very large, but everything was spread out and felt very, very old. In spite of the space, there was then no place to put things by the sink - and had to move a table close by just so I could put out toiletries. Rubber bath mat left by tub had black mold on it. The hotel is a former Insurance company headquarters. The rooms are absolutely gigantic but the place is a bit run down. Not sure how they have 4 stars, more like a 2.5 to 3 star location. In order to reach most of the rooms you have to take 3 sets of 4-6 stairs and the layout is a bit strange. The palace hotel is located within walking distance of all the wonderful areas of manchester. The train station is a few blocks away. The staff were so nice and accomadating. The building is an old beautiful structure, lovely to look at while you take breafast inthe dining area.

This hotel is a period piece and is certainly fascinating from an historical point of view--one can imagine the barons of the industrial revolution staying there in luxury. In our room, the […] bathtub drain contraption had broken--part of an antiquated plumbing arrangement-- but the shower did work. The window hardware was broken and most windows would not open -- problematic because of the hot weather. The windows and hardware desperately need to be cleaned inside and out -- all the soot of the industrial revolution in Manchester remains on those window panes and ledges. The desk staff person was very courteous and allowed us to check in early--we were quite grateful because we'd just come from the US and were exhausted. However, the majority of hotel staff were inaccessible and appeared preoccupied with the various business conferences underway on another floor (perhaps this is the only way the hotel stays in business?) The biggest problem: passenger and freight railroad tracks were right next to the room. Even with earplugs, we heard deafening freight trains running throughout the middle of the night. My first room was the worst room i ever saw. Threadbare carpet patched with duct tape, ancient beds, rotted wood floor in bathroom. I requested a different room that was much better, much smaller but newly renovated. Make sure they give you a new room !!

This is a wonderful hotel, which was ideally located for business at one of the Manchester universities. However, there were two false fire alarms -- one at 2:00 a.m. -- which we learned later from hotel staff were the result of guests smoking in their rooms.

This is not a four star hotel. The whole place is old and in need of a clean and refurbishment. Check in took a while as the staff member seemed to be having issues with his computer but instead of explaining the delay he just stood there in silence. Very odd guy. Fire alarm went off and it was nearly impossible to find my way out of the building, a […] real hazard. it took me over 10 minutes to find some stairs and I was not alone. In the end it was a false alarm, but what a hassle and bad welcome start. Room was tiny and furniture is cheap. We really enjoyed staying at the Palace Hotel. It was everything we thought it would be. Very convenient location right next to the railroad station. The interior was magnificent and really interesting to explore. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and was located in a lovely grand dining room.

Be aware that any gratuities in the restaurant & the bar go to management, not the staff. The hotel staff were friendly but there was a certain amount of noise in the hotel and outside. The staff at the hotel were all very good-friendly and effective. The hotel was a victorian insurance building that has been very well converted. The entrance hall is amazing and hallways contain the original tiling from the era. The bedroom was a beautiful twin - with double beds - an amazing high ceiling and wonderful light fitting from the centre […] of the room. Great bathroom and excellent shower. The public rooms and the bar are very nicely set out and comfortable. The location wasn't too bad - but no-where near a tram and a good 20 minute walk to Piccadilly Gardens and the Art Gallery and about 30 minutes to the Cathedral. For the price we paid for the hotel we expected a really lovely place. We were warmly welcomed into the hotel, and the staff were lovely. Headed up to our room (2 double beds) to find the whole wall by the window had paper hanging off and was a real state to look at, the writing desk also was a mess and had marks all over it, the room really needed […] a bit of a tidy up as a whole. The first bed was completely caved in the middle and was impossible to sleep on so I spent the night on a bed made up on the floor as well as having to hear every time the people in the room next door used the toilet ! During the night there was endless amounts of noise coming from nearby rooms, and all we could hear was sirens and people shouting from the street.. needless to say we had about an hours sleep! Looking forward to a hearty breakfast in the morning we were even more disappointed to receive poor service, miserable faces (fair enough, it was a sunday morning but a smile wouldnt hurt) and completely tasteless food. We were looking forward to a lovely night in Manchester, which it was, other than the hotel which really did ruin the weekend. Read more

The hotel was very clean, excellent service, lovely bar and atmosphere. We stayed on a saturday night and the streets below were extremely noisy (to be expected) but our room only had single glazing and a window that barely shut so the noise was unbearable till 3.30 am. We ended up blocking the windows out with cushions and towels!! We have stayed in […] many cities but the hotels have always had extra glazing for this reason (Even listed buildings). We were also disappointed as the booking page on hotels.com offered special deal "free breakfast" and the option to book breakfast taken away. The hotel didn't know about this deal as in previous reviews. If we paid the £20 cost for breakfast we could have had a cheaper deal booking with the Palace Hotel direct. Read more

This is the fourth time I've stayed at the palace which is very close the MCC which I have a repeat work event to attend. I have stayed at the MCC and the Ibis which are closer but regretted it each time! Also the prices are very good at the Palace in my last two stays. The building is large and old. Some of the upkeep needs improving but these are […] expensive features. The staff were very good at all times and they held onto my luggage until later in the day I checked out. The breakfast I had there was a good hotel breakfast. I will be booking again. One issue I had was that the room was very cold and I was told that there was an issue with the heating. We had heard good things about this hotel,unfortunately it didn't live up to the reports.having checked into our room,we had booked a double room,this room had two double beds,on the sheets on one bed had soot marks which had come from the ventilation grill on the wall.over the beds had canopys,which were full of thick dust,on trying to move the bed […] away from the wall,the headboard fell off,as was only balanced on a plinth,which again was full of thick dust.on complaining to the hotel reception we where shown 2 other rooms 1 room was for disabled customers,the other was a suite which we did accept as we were told no other rooms were avaiable. Even this room was a dissapointment no heating in the large bathroom or in the bedroom,the only part which was heated was the lounge area,which in previous years must have been a boardroom,all dark panelled walls and furniture. We stayed for 1 night to go to see "The Lion King" at the Palace theatre across the road. The hotel itself was ideally located for car parks and the railway sation. Check-in was swift and courteous, and the room was very large and airy and the bathroom facilities excellent (my partner found the reclining/sliding reading chair so comfortable, she now […] wants one at home!) The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food provided (including breakfast) was of a very high standard, even though the restaurant was full due to refurbishment and theatre crowds. We had booked the restaurant the day before travelling, and were very gla to do so as the Matitre'D was turning people away who hadn't pre-booked. The bar area was enormous and gave the feeling of not being cluttered, so tables were far enough apart to give the feeling of privacy. Overall this hotel was better value for money than other hotels in Manchester we have stayed in, the only drawback is it is a little further from the city centre, but we will certainly stay again if we visit the Palace theatre next door. The hotel is a wonderful, antique piece of "Manchester gothic" architecture - beautiful, but very much "industrial revolution." It's quite unique. It's worth wandering around the upper floors in its 2 wings; it's huge, interesting & like a maze. Be warned that some of the rooms are unrenovated, basic & not worth the price.
