Yes, it was clean but it did not seem to meet the same standards of all of the other Hampton Inns we have stayed in. We opt to pay a little more and expect a little bit more out of a Hampton Inn. "Close to ISU"
We usually stay at the Microtel across the street for these quick trips to visit our college student. I usually stick with the cheaper hotels. This time we went for Easter, so we wanted a pool. We picked the Hampton Inn based on the pool, the price, and other reviews. It was okay. The beds are only doubles so they are a tight squeeze fitting two people. […] The Microtel has 2 queen size beds in their rooms. The Hampton rooms are really tight. They were clean and comfortable, just not very spacious. The pool was wonderful. There is not a hot tub, but the pool is a decent size. There is not an outside space with chairs, which was a shame. It was beautiful weather, but there wasn't anywhere to sit and talk outside. A patio space in back would have been perfect. The breakfast was not that great. The cold items like cereal, bagels, yogurt, etc was great. The hot food left alot to be desired. Everyone around us was saying the same thing too. The juice machine was broken, but there were a couple pitchers of OJ on the counter to make up for it. I wish the Microtel had a pool, because it was a better stay over there. We had a nice time at the Hampton Inn, but it is a bargain hotel in Ames. We generally stay at a competitor's hotel because the rates are slightly better. But for this night, these folks really stepped up! It was a comfortable, clean and well-maintained hotel, just as you would expect from this chain. And the soundproofing in this hotel is excellent. The hotel was very accomadating. I was traveling with my 93 year old father and they scheduled cleaning the room around our times. The rest of the hotel was fine-- the kids enjoyed the pool, even though it was small. The pool area for parents supervising was very warm! My complaint, though, was the beds. "Not so clean..."
Upon arrival we were greeted by the night manager. He was very polite and helpful. Our key cards only worked after the 3rd try so we swapped them the next day. Upon closer inspection the room had obviously not been cleaned to the usual Hampton standard... Dirty vents with lots of dust in the bathroom and something stuck to the walls that should have […] come off with a wet rag, but was left there. There were long black hairs in the bed and we're both blonde. I found a water bottle under the dust ruffle making me wonder when the last time a vacuum was under there. We were on the first floor so we heard kids running and screaming on their way to the pool all day. But on top of all that, the least professional thing I saw was during my complimentary breakfast. I was the only guest there and I felt completely our of place as the staff chatted loudly to each other about the hiring of new employees over themselves and how they don't make enough money. "Good place to stay all around"
We had a king room. We were up in Ames for a weekend. I knew I was going to have to work while I was there. The hotel offered free wifi but it was quite obvious they had a fairly low speed DSL connection that caused some headaches. Breakfast closed up a bit earlier than the 11AM posted, but the spread wasn't bad. Some sort of eggs, meat, oatmeal, biscuits […] and gravy one day, a waffle maker, pastries, and cold options. Overall the hotel and the room was clean and comfortable. The only real issue was that someone was obviously smoking on our floor. We ran across the front desk person on there and I mentioned something. I got a non-committal "yeah, someone is" and nothing was done about it. Thing is, in the State of Iowa, smoking in a public building like that is illegal. Lastly, the rooms have very nice, large flat panels. Unfortunately, they're all locked into the hotel's Lodgenet system, so you can't plug in anything or use alternate video sources (so they can get you to buy their PPV and built-in game system). I didn't really care, but I would have liked the option. When we travel yearly for our anniversary we bring our wedding video and a laptop. Had this been that trip I would have been very disappointed. Still, please don't take the above as all there was to our stay. They say you only remember the bad.
