Although this hotel had a lot of mixed reviews, I'm happy to say that I had a great time here. During the time I was here there wasn't a lot of people staying at the resort which was a plus considering all the other reviews I read with the group of 400 rude Canadians. The hotel had 4 different restaurants that you could choose from however for breakfast […] the buffet was the only place opened and I wish they served different foods daily but it was still pretty good. The location of the hotel was great! We were right next to bars, clubs, shops, and the infamous airplane strip where you could experience huge planes flying right over your head. First and foremost, the hotel has no beach. The hotel rep and their website still (in January) tell that they do but the beach was washed away by hurricane Sandy and never restored. The guests are told to go to Mullet beach - 20 minutes walk, $15 charge for two beach chairs and umbrella, no facilities, shuttle is not provided. Also, the airport runway […] is next to the hotel, and the planes land and take off in plain view above guests heads from early morning to late night. We went All Inclusive. Not worth it, the food was not good and the mixed drinks were watered down. The wait staff was not friendly and every time we asked for anything like more tea or coffee they made us feel like we were bothering them or it was an inconvenience for them. We also could not get any chairs beside the pool because a group of tourist from Canada put towels on every chair in the shade by 6AM every morning. A pipe broke so there was no water in the hotel for about five hours on Friday afternoon. Old hotel very close to airport. We visited many Caribbean destinations in last 15 years. This place is the most misrepresented on Internet. Our junior suit was just a big room, and not as suit advertised, but management claimed that's what junior suit was. After we complained we were moved to different room, which was much nicer. Potential and Location... this is all that's left of this hotel. They need to invest very little to make it SUPERB. It was far from great. Passable. This was my second visit to this hotel in two years. They are in serious need of good management and supervision of all staff. Everyone seems to have an arrogant look and attitude. One seemingly of an entitlement […] and lack of desire to serve the customer. ONLY the bellhop staff was friendly and helpful with a smile and willingness to do so. The hotel is seriously decaying. The indoor path to the Ocean Terrace has been and still is under construction since I was there in May 2011. This wing of the property is straight out of the 50's or '60s without any updates. The floors are in bad shape as are the furniture (old and tacky) and paint. Doors seems old and all hardware is badly needing upgrading/updating. We had the all inclusive package and there was never a problem with food or drink ... plenty of good food and free drinks. I was promised liquor in the in-room minibar but never saw any. The room service never realized or recognized we were a party of three and never gave us enough towels or soap/toiletries for all of us for all 5 nights. Also not enough pillows and none for the pull-out sofa. One positive note was when we asked for late checkout, we were offered the longest possible extension for free (normally a fee is charged) for the inconveniences we experienced. Traveled to Sonesta Maho from 20-25 December 2012. Location is literally right next to the airport. It takes 5 minutes to get to the hotel from the airport and vice versa. Right across the street from the hotel is a casino, which is fun to partake in after the sun goes down. That is about it for the good. Now, the bad. The service is dreadful. The *worst* […] service at any hotel/restaurant I've ever had. Only one person the entire time we were at the Sonesta even pretended to have any interest in providing good customer service--that was the car rental agent at the Hertz. Nobody at the hotel smiles, says hi or, more importantly, recognizes that you are their customer. I don't expect an eye roll or lip smack for asking for a diet coke for the 2nd time. I could go on with regards to examples but just know you will not receive good customer service at the hotel or anywhere on the island. Oh, and the food is bad. I've stayed at all-inclusives and this was, by far, the worst choice and quality of food. We went to Sopranos a couple of times to get a decent meal. We rented a car and drove around the island (including the French side. I kept reading about quaint areas of Marigot (French capital) and Grand Case. I saw none of this. Granted, I may have missed a turn or two but the entire island looked the same--downtrodden. That is not a judgement just a statement of fact. Wouldn't rent a car if I had to do it again. I arrived at the aiport and went to look for a shuttle bus to the hotel, which is only about 1/2 mile away. I called the resort and they said they do not provide shuttle service even though I paid for all-inclusive. I got a taxi and it was $8, for a one minute ride to the hotel. At the hotel there was a hotel shuttle van parked out front, but I guess […] I wasn't important enough for them to offer to pick me up. My check in was fast, but there weren't any locks for the room-safe or any refreshments in the fridge available till the following day. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable, but there was noise from remodeling on the floor above ours that started everyday at 9:00 AM., and sometimes odors from glues or adhesives. The pool was very nice, the lounge chairs were comfortable, and the bartenders were nice, but you have to ask for premium liquors to get them. There is an unsightly area by the pool that was screened off with a see-through mesh that had a view of the trash container and the water treatment facilities and there were sometimes gross smelling odors around the hotel grounds. The beach area and ocean were very nice for snorkeling or swimming. The restaurants were nice, but the food at the buffet was very boring and there wasn't much variety to choose from. Watching the planes land and take-off blowing people down the beach is a lot of fun. The hotel doesn't have it's own night club for dancing, so you have to go outside and pay for drinks. Read more

We were not informed the hotel was under reconstruction, needed to ask for a complete towel set daily ( always a towel or washcloth missing), had to request refrigerator stocking, only one retaurant open a buffett not the 3 restaurants as advertised, no air conditioning in common areas, no hot water the last day, we tipped servers and bar tenders voluntarily […] until one server openly requested a tip while we were still dining, 1/2 the grounds and pool weree blocked off and noisey related to the construction. This was our fourth stay at the Sonesta Maho and we had a wonderful time and will be returning again next year. Admittedly, they are still ironing out some of the details with the change over to a completely all-inclusive resort, but they have added a number of daytime activities as well as nightlife since our stay last year. There were always a number […] of choices at the buffet, but, like any buffet, the dinner selections sometimes made it back to lunch the next day, which was disappointing. The Palms Grill is always a good lunch alternative though (Lorna is the greatest), with food made fresh to order, and the Pizza Man makes a pizza to rival New Haven’s finest. Hopefully they will open The Point every night for dinner and/or return to giving vouchers for nearby restaurants. Cheryl at the Pool Bar and Ramon at the Palms Bar are the best bartenders ever! They constantly go out of their way to keep everyone happy all day long, nonstop, with a smile. A special thank you to Cheryl, Milton and Luz for making my boyfriend’s birthday in St. Maarten extra special – I rented the gazebo and had a private dinner and birthday celebration for him that he will never forget! There were many positives and negatives to this "resort". It appeared to have suffered some damage some time ago, so there was quite a bit of scaffolding around some clearly condemned rooms. No one was really working on those, and you could tell it had been that way for awhile because there were plants growing out of broken windows! That ugliness aside, […] our check in was disastrous. We waited for 2hrs for a room, but we weren't the only ones. It looked like they had overbooked. Maybe they didn't account for the 150 condemned rooms? Not sure what the problem was. When we finally got our room, it was nice enough, but in a wing where there weren't many other people. That's not necessarily a bad thing. However, on night 2 our AC broke at 2am, started smoking and we were evacuated to another room. The only room available had two twin beds...we are newlyweds! But at least they had another room in the middle of the night. This so called resort had some nice amenities as well, like the two beautiful pools and great alcohol selection. It has great potential but needs some work physically and to the day to day. Oh yea, the all inclusive food was pretty bad and most of it was inedible. You are better off, going to the duty free liquor store and making your room all inclusive and maybe catching dinner 1x/day at a nice restaurant. Read more

This resort is very outdated. It would have been a great vacation spot if we were living in the 80's. The first room we got that was part of the all inclusive package was so outdated and the bathroom was filthy(mold, rusty appliances, leaking toilet). I read several complaints about the noise of airplanes coming in and out because of the close proximity to the airport, but we found it not bothersome it all. This was our third stay in the last 3 years. We brought our two children, ages 15 and 11. The place has definitely gone downhill. The quality of the food for the all-inclusive was boring. It was very hard to get refills on hot tea and coffee. The waiters would come around once, then forget about you. My family would say "thank you" when served, and […] the staff would not respond. We had paid for a "Junior Suite", which was more than a regular room. When we arrived, we had to go to the "old" building where we had an ocean view, complete with a dumping area of yard, directly below. The room looked just like a regular room, but had a very musty smell. We immediately went to the office and were told we would be moved to a pool view room in the main hotel building. We went to the room, only to find it had no view of the pool or ocean, but an unkept roof area. At this point, we were tired of complaining and waiting in the registration line, so we just accepted our fate. We were never offered a refund on the difference between the regular room rate and the Junior Suite rate. On previous stays, the lobby area was air conditioned but no more. I guess they are cutting back on costs. At least they had the ceiling fans running. Remember, we were travelling in mid-July and the place is near the equator! This was not the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort we had remembered from our previous stays! We will not be returning, and would advise anyone to avoid this place. Read more

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this hotel recently. The staff members are helpful and friendly and the overall premises are pleasing. The hotel and Lobby upon arrival do not show well. The Beach and the pools are nice. The area around the hotel is very inner city and not somwwhere you would take a stroll. Some of the male wait staff do not treat women well. They are incredibly stingy with the towels.
