"Affordable by European High Price Standards"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
Nice place. Walking distance to metro. If you do not have heavy suitcases then take the metro from Airport instead of cabs. Great spread for Breakfast buffet. We had a suite. Only one bathroom. An extra half bath would be prefect or at least an extra sink (instead of a lot of cupboard space). Friendly and helpful staff.

"Good location, good price, comfortable and clean"
We reserved three rooms at this hotel for our family trip to Spain and everyone was very happy with the choice. The neighborhood is quiet, but just a few yards away from a major road, plaza and access to metro, so getting to the more active areas is very easy. There's very good restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping nearby. It's true that the walls are […] very thin but the noise has to be loud in order to hear it through the walls - my parents were in the room next to us and I could hear my dad coughing at night, but that's about it, no talking our TV noise. My only annoyance was that there was construction and renovation inside the hotel while we were there, but they were considerate enough not to begin work until later in the morning and ended early in the evening. It was still annoying to try and sleep in and have to wake up to pounding and drilling. However, this did not ruin the stay and I would still highly recommend this hotel. Finally, the staff was very friendly and professional. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"When traveling always consider meal options"
Overall solid hotel however had a problem getting fed one night late after midnight after traveling up from Sevilla on Renfe. I had late meal service available at the VIPs near my other hotel near Pza. Espana on the front end of my trip so this "trained" for up to 3AM there but not in Gran Versalles part of town even on weekends. Go figure. Heard it […] is even worse in England. Room very clean and comfy although I had to change rooms the 2nd day as the new occupant next to me making some really strange noises over and over. Thank you very much Gran Versalles for allowing me to change my room. Otherwise would have been an unpleasant stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Take the breakfast for 10 EU, it's the best value in the area. The desk also sells one and two tour bus tickets that take you , everywhere you need to go. The two day was about 25 EU.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clean, Quiet, Accomodating"
I really can't say enough about our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful, & the complimentary breakfasts amazing. It's in an "out of the way" part of town that is relatively quiet but with the metro just steps away, everything is easy to get to. The airline lost our luggage and the desk staff was very concerned and helpful, monitoring the website […] for updates. Our room was also very clean & well maintained. The only drawback is that a "double" is 2 twin beds pushed together but made separately (not the end of the world). We stayed 4 nights & feel it was an excellent value for the price. "Good hotel, convenient location, odor in rooms"
This was a reasonably priced hotel a short walk from the Alonso Martinez metro, and within walking distance (20 minutes) of several major attractions in central Madrid, as well as restaurants and shopping. Our room looked into a courtyard and was very quiet. Bathroom and furnishings were modern and functional. Breakfast was 10 euros and was very good. Staff […] was very courteous and tried to be helpful. Weaknesses: - we stayed on the non-smoking floor. We tried two rooms, but both had strong odors. In one room it was because people had smoked (not the hotel's fault.) In the other, it seemed to be more a mildew odor caused by water being tracked from the bathroom into the main room. Fortunately, the windows opened, so we could air out the room. The carpets should be replaced. - it was hot - 37 C - during our visit, and the air conditioning couldn't keep up. Fortunately, Madrid cools off at night so we just kept the window open. - none of the staff seemed to know about local restaurants, and the one recommendation they gave us was bad. They need to put together a list of restaurants and a map. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel is in a very convenient location, very close to the Alonso Martinez Metro Station. While reserving my room I requested a non-smoking, exterior view room, and they gave me a room matching to my request. I recommend this hotel to everyone.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Surly staff, hair in bathroom and bed, wall view"
Convenient location close to metro and the wonderful neighborhood of Chueca. I arrived and the lobby stank of recent cigarettes. The man behind the desk was not very friendly. When I asked how much the breakfast was, his response was "you didnt pay for it"...well that's why I asked?! Got to the room, decent size. There was hair in the bathtub and on […] the fuzzy blanket (I noticed the maid's cart didn't have the fuzzy blanket so they probably do not change it between guests?). The window opens to a view of the next building. Walls are paper thin, be prepared to hear toilet flushing constantly and other people's televisions. Well stocked room fridge and provided toiletries. Overall a disappointment. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A Friendly Clean and Modern Hotel With Charm"
The exterior of the hotel matches the 19th century architecture of this area of Madrid (about 3km north of city center) but the interior is quite modern, including the rooms and amenities. Liked the fact that the hotel has a Tapas bar and a restaurant. The sandwiches in the bar were great. Although some floors are designated as non-smoking, we felt […] air quality of air conditioning needed some cleaning up. But room windows open, and we slept with fresh air and the AC turned off. Bathroom and towels were very clean, didn't have to use our own towels. Room nicely appointed. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. Would stay there again. "Great value"
I stayed here with my fiancee for two nights. The hotel is very close to the Alonso Martinez metro, and you can easily walk to the big 3 museums (Prado, Thyssien, and Reina Sofia. They're about a mile or so away). The room was clean and the bed was two twins pushed together to make a King, but that's very common in Europe, especially Spain and Portugal. […] Hotel staff was friendly and spoke English. The decor is not fancy and the hotel restaurant looked a bit cafeteria-like but we weren't expecting the Ritz. "Recommend...with caveats."
I liked this hotel. The front desk people were very nice, btu the room was small for a four star hotel. Funny story: I tried to get room service at 11:05pm on Thursday night. when I called, the persopn told me that room service closed at 11:00pm, so I missed them. I tried again on Friday night at 10:30pm, thinking I could make my request before 11:00pm. […] On this call, the person said they were closed again. I asked wen they closed. They reply: 10:30pm. Why would they close at 10:30pm on a Friday andn 11:00pm on Thursday. Something here is awry. There is no hotel informatino in the rooms, so no answers were to be found there. Great location...but this really only qualifies in my estimation as a 3-star hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Helpful staff, great location"
The staff gave us numbers for reporting stolen credit cards and later, tips for a great restaurant in the area. Free internet in the lobby. We walked to many popular tourist areas. We'd choose the Versailles again if staying in Madrid.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice hotel"
Very nice hotel in great location, nice neighborhood and close to metro. Room was a bit stuffy since our window opened onto a courtyard with little airflow. Could have a bit more storage space. Front desk staff very nice and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Could be much better"
The hotel is a no frills kind of place. My room was totally dark with one window facing the middle of the building. The internet would go in and out at all hours but when it was up it was extremely slow. If you're on a very tight budget you could probably do worse however i was very unimpressed with the offering of this place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Surprise breakfast fee"
Good hotel, comfortable bed, (really) free and decent Wi-Fi, nice location (near Alonso Martinez metro). Good value. "Very friendly and helpful staff"
Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice breakfast room on the lower floor with good selections. Our room was very hot and it took several attempts with the staff to have maintenance fix this. Never could cool the room down. We had two different rooms. Would recommend an inner court view versus a street view due to the garbage dumpsters on the sreet being […] dumped in the middle of the night. Much quieter on the court yard side. We would go back to this hotel when in Madrid. Good value. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Gran Versalles"
Was expecting more from a "four star" hotel. Seems like 4 stars in Spain is more like 3 stars elsewhere. Decor was very outdated. Price was good tho, so not a bad value. The free WiFi was also very convenient, and the service was fast and reliable. The hotel was about a 15 minute walk from the main center, but was right off a metro line. Bathroom was […] very clean and the hotel staff was very good, other than the snarly guy at the front desk. Staff spoke little to no english. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wrong timing"
The hotel is under renovation and the walls are paper thin, so early in the morning and throughout the entire day, one could here the loud construction taking place just 2 doors down from my room. It felt more like 2-3 stars, and if it weren't so conveniently located, it would have been a complete disaster. Probably won't stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location"
This hotel is located just a few minutes walking from Gran Vía and Paseo de la Castellana. After the last urban renovation made by the city you can walk through pedestrian streets almost all the way to the historic district. The hotel is a little bit outdated, specifically the bathroom. The room size is big for European standards but quite small for […] American standards. However what you get for this price is worth. The garage has only a few and really small spots, don´t use it; instead, use the Metro of Madrid, maybe the best Metro network of the world. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Comfortable and Convenient Mid-sized Hotel"
We chose this hotel and location for a number of reasons and were very satisfied overall: 1. Location was just outside of the major attractions so walkable but greater chance of quiet nights sleep (we did not want to stay up past midnight) 2. Metro station nearby for easy access to other popular neighborhoods plus airport 3. Free wireless internet […] access in the rooms, though the signal was a little weak. This has become a necessary hotel feature for us to access email and web via Android mobile phone. 4. Reasonable rates and easy booking process via Expedia Note: For us breakfast was not included but can be had for a bargain. We went twice to a cafe/diner (more like a coffee shop) across the street from the Alonso Martinez metro entrance called Santander Gran Cafeteria. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Excellent Suggested Place in Madrid"
This hotel is very central and right off of the metro. The staff was polite. The best thing about this hotel was that we stayed on the 5th floor and it was quiet. Previous hotels in Spain were very noisy with paper thin walls...this hotel was much better insulated and I actually got some rest without hearing people talking in the next room. The bed […] was comfy. We stayed here for 2 nights and booked again for 2 nights when our plans were extended. Would definitely stay here again. "Hotel Gran Versalles - Quiet, clean, convenient"
Good experience. We got in at 9:30am fromt he airport and they let us check in, so we were able to nap and shower before hitting the town. Metro stop right across the street, and hotel is about 2 stops from Sol and Grand Via. Airport was only a 20-minute metro ride away. Hotel was clean, and bed was insanely comfortable. Room was small-to-average, but […] typical for Europe. It was very warm in the room (it was 66 degrees F outside in November, great time to visit Madrid), couldn't get the AC to work right, so we opened the window which was great. The neighborhood is on the quiet side, and there is a nice cafe across the street if you don't want to pay for the expensive breakfast. Free wifi too. "Not quite what I expected"
Convenient location, this hotel is rated 4 stars, not sure why. The hotel is clean and service is good, however, it offers no amenities other than a restaurant on site. The room was clean but very small and the bathroom was crowded with the bidet taking up a lot of room and causing the toilet to be placed very close to the tub with no room for your […] legs. The hotel staff was friendly enough but this is far from a 4 star hotel. I would rate it 2.5 to 3 stars at best. One other thing to add, Madrid is a beautiful city but with a high unemployment rate and crime to match. The Metro is full of pickpockets. I saw two robbery attempts and I was almost a victim myself. I found that the Renfe trains that run mostly above ground have at least one panhandler, sometimes two, working on board the whole trip. This hasn't been the case in the past... The hotels was a typical european hotel. A little confusing to find at first before you remember street names are on buildings and not signs. "Great Hotel, but Location is a little inconvenient"
Unlike other reviewers, I would definitely classify this hotel as 4 stars. The staff was helpful, the rooms were clean and well maintained, and the amenities were excellent. There was nothing bad about this hotel. Some might find it's location mildly inconvenient because it is located on the very edge of the center of Madrid. Further, although the […] hotel is located right next to a Metro station, you have to change metro lines at least once to get to most places a tourist would want to go.
