"A diamond in the rough"
Room was very spacious, bedding fantastic, linens above average for a *** hotel. Service was ***** the friendliest nicest staff. The neighbors seemed fine, the view from our room, well the only negative, but get your staying in the city! And best of all our dog was welcomed!!! Will definitely stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"THE ONLY THING THEY NEED IS..."
The hotel was clean and modern. Their parking was a little tight, but it's free. I liked the location(Korea town). For the price, it was very present overall, but the only thing they are missing is a mini fridge.Genuine Expedia guest review
Two night visit. Very clean, modern room. Close to Wilshire Blvd and metro. Good experience. Concierge super helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

No hair drier in the room, no breakfast. The room was nice though and the neighborhood as well. Do recommend for an overnight stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"More than just shelter."
The rooms are large, the bed is comfortable. Nice minimalist decoration. Hardwood floors. Residential area just 2 blocks from shops, restaurants. Indoor parking is free, but there are more rooms than spaces. You have to double or triple park at night and leave your key and trust someone to move your car. Street parking is scarce. Downside: if you need […] to tell someone where you're staying, you may also need to explain its not a homeless shelter, just a boutique hotel with an unfortunate name. I have stayed here many times. Great value for the price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Very nice room. It's literally like having your own room in your parents' house with a bathroom in it as well. No fridge, but that wasn't much issue for me for one night. Right in the middle of Koreatown so a lot I could do. Very clean and the bed was massive. Very nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Walking Distance 2 Soop Sok Karaoke, Great Parking"
The greatest convenience about this place is its parking garage thereby you don't have to worry about the hassle of parking on LA streets. I got this place because I was doing karaoke at Soop Sok Music Studio and didn't want to drive drunk. Soop Sok is the best and it's only a few blocks walk from here. I found the rooms to be very large and comfortable. […] The Wi-fi worked fine. I really have no major complaints. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Budget Hotel"
Compared to other hotels in this price range, Shelter Hotel cannot be beat. Free parking, free Wi-Fi, modern, minimal, clean rooms and central location. I always stay here when I visit LA and have yet to be disappointed. Hotel has minimal frills, but bathrooms are clean and new, beds are comfortable and staff are friendly. Free coffee and donuts/cookies […] in the lobby in the morning. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good Hotel than could be great"
My wife and I are moving to LA in the near future and needed a place to stay while apartment hunting that wouldn't break the bank. After searching pretty extensively we settled on The Shelter Hotel. The place has definitely been renovated in the last couple of years. The bed is nice and large and the furniture and fixtures all look reasonably new and […] modern. All of these are a huge plus for me because I've found that in this price range you never really know what you're going to get until you reach the room. Two things were missing that brought my rating down a bit. The first is a hook to hang used towels on. This should be a no brainer for a hotel to have but there wasn't one in the room. So essentially we used a towel and either had to leave it on the counter or toss it on the ground. I'm not a huge germophobe but I also don't know then those surfaces were last cleaned so all towels were good for one use. The second thing that the room really could have used was a fridge. I know that the hotel is going for minimalism but a mini fridge isn't to much to ask for in my opinion. Just a place to stick leftovers or drinks. Even with these complaints I would still recommend the hotel to my friends. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Lots of potential"
I think this place has a lot of potential to be an awesome, sought after hotel, but they do fall short a bit. I don't think it would take much work for them to be a place I would love, e.g.: lobby/front desk area is awkwardly placed, the entire first floor is dark and unfriendly, the stairwells need maintenance like painting, the rooms are nicely styled […] but need a deep cleaning (the subway tile in the bathroom is beautiful, but needs to be cleaned and I noticed some spills on the headboard that hadn't been cleaned, which is gross). Having more than one staff member at a time would be nice -- I was trying to check out, but the lone staffer was moving cars and early in the morning this was confusing/annoying for me, stressful for the staffer and it nearly made me late for the last day of my conference. "Great one night only."
The rooms were large but had no closet, dresser, Kleenex, many of the extras you expect in a hotel. We worked out of our suitcase because we were leaving in the morning. The staff was very friendly and the room was very clean. The king size bed was comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review

"2.9 miles from my friends house in LA"
Did the pictures on the site match what we experienced in real life? I guess so. The Shelter is an old Motel/Hotel that they fixed up. I think they did a good job with what they have. The elevator is still old school, you cannot just wave your hand to stop the door - you might get a bloody stump in return. There is free internet and free parking. The […] room was big. Nice black brown wood floors. The King size bed was nice. My girlfriend is a “pillow” snob and she did not think the pillows were soft enough. They were ok with me. I would not consider the following a “bad” list but a list of things that we experienced. In the room there was not a closet to hang your clothes and a bureau to put your clothes away. There was some kind of “book rack”. There was a section in the room where a metal rack could go. The bathroom was a decent size but they did not have any hooks or towel racks. Because they have a small parking lot underneath the hotel they have to double park cars after a certain hour and you have to turn over your keys so they can move cars around. "Staff responsive but hotel disappointing"
We chose this hotel, listed as convenient to the Keck Medical Center of USC, for convenience and comfort (we hoped). Our son was going to have major surgery and we wanted a place to rest and feel some sense of home away from home. Unfortunately this Hiel was not that place. Mercifully, our son is OK! But the room was tiny and mostly bare. The bathroom […] was not clean, walls dirty and splashed with old stuff from former guests. The walls did not contain noise from other guests, nor the windows from the extremely loud apartment complex six feet away, where there were two all night parties! Finally, the bed was not firm at all. As hotels go it was really not cozy at all... Thanks for your question. Take this one off the three stars list, quick! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Dog Friendly and Secure"
Located in Central LA next to Koreatown. Enjoyed shopping and walking dogs around neighborhood. My room had lacquered hardwood floors and bedbug resistant furniture and new extremely comfortable king mattress. "Beds Sag Like They're from a Flophouse!"
I stayed here a few years ago, and it was fine. Unfortunately, the beds are now so uncomfortable that we had to leave a day early to save our backs. "Nice, no frills hotel - good value for the price"
The Shelter Hotel looks like it had a life as a former apartment building. The first floor is only comprised of a parking garage and the lobby is on the second floor. Front desk staff is friendly and professional. The lobby looks to be furnished with furniture from a second hand shop but it's been carefully edited so it has a stylish, minimalist appearance. […] The hotel rooms are decorated in a modern aesthetic with the same minimalist approach. My room was spacious and featured a king sized bed, two bedside tables, a moderately-sized flat screen TV bolted to the wall, a desk and chair and a bench. Instead of a closet, there was a bureau with a place to hang clothes and a few drawers. We had windows on two sides of our room. The bathroom comes with both a shower and separate tub. The only thing I did not enjoy about my stay was that the hardwood floors showed some visible dust bunnies when we arrived and did not appear to be swept thoroughly during our 4-day stay. I chose to wear a pair of socks instead of walking barefoot on dirty floors and by the end of our stay the bottom of my socks were thoroughly blackened. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
My stay would have been much better if the walls weren't so thin. This place is an old apartment building with hardwood floors. So you know how you can hear your neighbors walking above you in those types of buildings? That's exactly how it is here. The Shelter Hotel was a cool little spot to stay 2 nights. My room was clean and modern. Building had 1 elevator but it was quick. This is a 4 story building. Parking was underneath the building. "Good simple hotel in downtown LA"
This hotel is simple, but provides great value for it's location. It's clean, with comfortable king-sized beds, free parking, cable TV, and free wi-fi. The towels are a bit worn, but everything is clean. The staff is pleasant, but service and amenities are basic.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Location, location & parking."
Staying in L.A. is usually very expensive or very seedy. This location is well located for the price. Parking is under the building. The rooms have been recently renovated. New mattresses, linens, faucets, tiled bath enclosure. I enjoyed the carpetless floor. The halls and public areas are a bit tired, but this place must host an endless stream of humanity. No, […] fridge or microwave, but HBO & wifi is included. I like the choices they've made to keep costs low. There was no hooks or even a closet rod, FYI. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to Koreatown"
I like staying in this hotel because of the low cost and because it is very conveniently located next to Koreatown. If you are planning to visit Koreatown, this hotel is best because it is in close walking distance. About the hotel: the front desk guy is rude and doesn't have a smile on his face - which doesn't make you feel welcome. "A weird hotel."
I booked 5 nights here because it was only a few miles away from where I needed to be for a work conference. I wouldn't recommend it. I ended up moving to The Wilshire. It's fine for a one night stay, but anything longer would be too much. There is no real front desk, just a kid with a computer. No blow dryers in the room, but if you go downstairs and […] ask for one, they'll give it to you. No room service and the phone in the room doesn't even call the front desk. Place isn't that clean (make up smears on my bathroom wall, etc). When I locked myself out of my room they didn't even ID me before giving me another key card. Liked it! The hotel rooms were comfortable and clean, spotless and very nice bathrooms, spacious tub. The hotel's front desk (Jessica) was incredibly nice and helpful. "Stars are disseving!!"
First of all the gentleman at the front desk was less than professional didn't speak about terms wasn't greated, given keys and sent on my way. Secondly, I felt like I was staying in a halfway house-definitely not a hotel when you think about what a hotel is. Finally, upon leaving check out was as simple as dropping off the key and the same gentleman […] only saying that's it.....I had to ask about the deposit and refund terms. Also if you are not comfortable with someone else having your keys make sure you get parking because cars double park and the office moves your car. To some that's not a bad thing but can be uncomfortable.... I thought the bed was very comfortable bathroom was interesting in that the fixtures were lose and difficult to turn on....if you just need a place to lay your head I guess this will do but the price is way off.... "This hotel made me nervous"
I wanted to find a hotel close to Dodger Stadium. This was the only thing left. When I arrived, I thought that I was in the wrong place as this looked like an apartment building. There was not any signage indicating that this was a hotel anywhere. Parking was incredibly difficult until you understood what you were supposed to do (park underground). […] Lobby was a room that you arrived in when you went to the second floor (again no signage). Person at the front desk was not friendly and did not want to help us with directions. Room was sparsely decorated (no furniture, no closet, no ironing boards), just a bed, tv and desk. Furniture was relatively modern as were the bathroom fixtures. Felt like I was paying by the hour and all I could think of was what happened in that room before I got there. Guy at check out was incredibly nice, but by then it was too late. It's easy to see why there are some bad review, but it's also obvious that some reviewers don't understand pricing of L.A. hotels. If you want the same quality you expect in other cities (except major metropolitan cities) you would have to pay considerably more. For the price, this is a good place to stay in L.A. "There's no way this is a three-star hotel."
After reading all of the reviews, I was really expecting to be impressed with my visit. Don't be fooled by the reviews though. This hotel is nothing but a Motel 6 with some lipstick on. There wasn't anywhere to put my clothes or belongings. I just piled them on top of the desk. No towel rack. There was a hole cut out of the wall. My view was a bunch […] of power lines and somebody's apartment balcony. One of my pillow cases was YELLOW. No...it was not meant to be yellow. It was meant to be white like all of the other pillowcases. That one went on the floor. The rest of the bedding was not much better. No top sheet! I slept with my clothes on. The worst part: I took a shower and walked around for a bit with bare feet. By the time I was ready to put my shoes on, my feet were getting pretty black. GROSS! The parking situation was rather special. If there weren't any parking spaces, you had to leave your keys at the front desk so that they could move your car if someone needed to get out. (?!?!!!!) I'm really just stunned at how many great reviews this place got. There's no way it's a three-star hotel, and there's definitely no way that I got my money's worth. It's hard to find a decent hotel in LA that isn't overpriced or run down if reasonably priced... Sure the place could use a few touch ups with paint here and there but the room was fresh & clean. Overall, I had a great experience at the hotel. The room I booked was very clean and nice. The bed was very comfortable, and I loved the white sheets. I usually don't write a review but I feel like I have to do it this time. I dont' think this is a 3 star hotel. Absoluely NOT. Staffs don't look to be trained as hotel employee. One guy was even very rude too. Front desk was really a signle DESK in FRONT of elevator at 1st floor. I stayed in 4th floor and wifi was not working at all. When I asked them […] to check, they tried to blame my computer even without trying anything. I had one laptop, one tablet and two iPhones. None of them worked. Free wifi was main reason I chose to stay in this hotel. Room was very noisy all night long and bed was not comfortable. Only thing OK was the bathroom which was new and clean. I know it is cheaper than other 3 star hotel in this area but it was not 3 star experience. Star rating should be corrected so that expectation can be matched with their service. It was one of the worst experience I ever had. Very disappointed.... I could have understood everything if this hotel was listed as 1.5 star. Expedia should correct the rating.
