Decorated beautifully for the holidays. The Thanksgiving brunch was wonderful. Great food, lots of choices, great quality food. The wait staff was so attentive and nice. "A Great Old Hotel"
The facilities are excellent; particularly the Spa area. It is an icon with a great Berkeley location and a fantastic view of the Bay. The only complaint was breakfast in the Meritage Room which I made a reservation for. The service was terrible and took forever. The waiter basically ignored us. When we arrived at the Claremont, the desk clerk asked, "What brings you here?" We told him we were eloping and he upgraded us to a beautiful suite on the 6th floor! We used to live in Berkeley, with a similarly spectacular view, and it was so romantic and familiar to be looking out over the Bay with views of all 3 bridges, the East Bay and San Francisco. "clean, but not enough bang for the buck"
The positive: the rooms were at least clean, and the views from the top are fantastic. The negatives: the rooms were cold, austere, and cavernous. They were also far smaller than similarly priced hotels; there wasn't even a bathtub in the bathroom. Also, they charge an exorbitant parking fee just to get through the gate. The stay started out ok. The valet staff was very nice. I went to the desk to check in and asked about being sure that I was getting a quiet room. I was happy when they went out of their way to make that happen. I had read reviews about the hotel smelling musty. It did. There was an odd smell in the hallways and even more in the room until I turned […] off the fan. The room overall was fine. The only problem was that the bed was so high, I practically had to climb up onto it. It was very comfortable to sleep in. The real disappointment came in the morning. At 8 am a small child was running up and down the halls with her mother. The mother was encouraging a quite loud conversation instead of letting her fellow guests sleep in. The next disappointment was that there was only one restaurant on site that was open for breakfast. This service ended at 10 am. So anyone enjoying a vacation was out of luck to get a later breakfast. They offered us brunch, but that was $59 per person. We opted to go back to the room and check out instead and go to breakfast closer to home. Also, there were only a few stations on the TV. The water pressure in the shower was disappointing. There was also no mat on the tub and it becomes very slippery when you are actually taking a shower, almost fell through the glass encasing. The Claremont is a grand old hotel that was glorious in its heyday. The restaurants, function rooms and foyer remain impressive. The guest rooms are another story. We were in the Bay Area for personal reasons and chose the Claremont because of good past experience. The one thing we requested (and paid for) was a room with a full view of the Bay and […] SF. They told us it was a busy night (we were there for three and had reserved *long* before) and they only had one room available -- cramped, dark with an oblique view of the Bay). We asked for a better one. They put us in a bigger room that had a tiny window and a view from one corner of the room only. The next day they found what they described as "spectacular." "Avoid the hillside"
Service, food and staff are excellent, beautiful location, gorgeous Spa facilities. My room went to the hill side which turned out to be the noisy back entrance of the hotel. Trucks maneuvering permanently below my window starting at 6.15 a.m. is not what I expect for this room rate and this hotel category. "Aged, dumpy, NOT a "resort""
This hotel is in dire need of remodeling. We were told our room was one of their best rooms and it was a nauseating and stained mustard color, cheap furnishings, an alarm clock that could not be shut off (and which housekeeping kept plugging back), and a completely inadequate bathroom (tiny). We could hear everything from the room next door and on Saturday […] morning we got to hear all the announcements for an amplified sports event being held in the parking lot. They charge a resort fee (which is why we came - a place near the city for our kids to swim) and their pool facilities are laughable. Evidently, you get access to a steam room and some fancy shower but I can get that when I go to my gym or get a massage at home. Also, room service food was horrible (but that's pretty common even in the best hotels). The staff was very nice. But, the place is a dump. "Not what I expected..."
First arrival, I went to check in, my room wasn't even ready when I really needed it to change and get ready for a function I needed to attend later in the day. One of the employee there told me they were fully booked and to come back later afternoon soooo I was very upset not able to get dress appropriately for the function. I was a complete mess. "A Horrible Excuse for A Spa Hotel Experience!"
DO NOT expect to have a (4/Star - LUXURY) Spa/Hotel Experience. This place is definitly a 2.5 to 3.0 Star at best. There were so many "members of the club" using the pools and deck chairs, that we had to actually wait 30 mins. to sit. Hey, it seems to me, that if you are going to charge folks BIG $$$$ for a "luxury Spa Hotel stay, IT SHOULD NOT FEEL […] LIKE A HOLIDAY INN EXPERIENCE! HAVE A SEPERATE POOL FOR SPA GUESTS.... Your four star rating seems to be based on (GLORY YEARS IN THE 1920'S - 1950'S). ROOMS APPEAR NOT TO HAVE BEEN RENOVATED / UPDATED SINCE THE 1940's. We arrived for a one night stay on July fourth ( a major holiday), BUT there was only one person at the front desk. We stood in a very long line to check in. After finally making it to our (luxury room), we discovered it was simply a very small standard room, positioned on the second floor, at the back of the hotel, facing into SEVERAL open trash dumpsters, bushes/weeds. We did not get a snack basket, no robes or slippers as per marketing ad. We had to return to the front desk and demand a better room, robes, slippers and the promised "snack" basket. We got a basket, never got slippers, and finally got 2 robes at 8pm from a maintenance worker (after asking manager / housekeeper about 5 times.) "Three day stay"
This was our third stay at the Claremont Hotel. Our room was in the corner on the first floor, and as such we could hear the elevator ringing during the night. It was also smaller than I was lead to believe from the description and the price we paid. Our neighbors next door were very noisy our second night there. The water in the toilet circulated continuously […] and the handle did not work properly. They did fix it once they were notified. On the positive side, the spa experience was delightful, as was the Meritage restaurant and its staff. "Not what it appears to be!"
We opted for the Ocean View. It was a glimpse of the ocean after looking over a filthy roof in dire need of attention. The room was not very clean (splashed of coffee in the coffee/fridge area and finger prints on the closet door). The room was an odd shape which lead me to think that other rooms were better but I heard that all were "small". The furniture […] is what I would expect from a rummage sale...Why charge $269 for a room like this? We also got slapped with a $26 resort fee-we looked-nothing but screaming kids and a camp like feel. Not a Resort and Spa! We also had to pay for parking. I am a meeting planner/hotel consultant and I would have been appalled to have a meeting there or to suggest a client go for the resort and spa. Severely out of date/needs a remodel. I could not even offer the hotel an opportunity to correct the issue with my room or dispute the charge because the front desk was always busy. I know that because I even tried to call to get our car from the valet park and the phone rang and rang. We left our room with the phone ringing on the speaker phone and schlepped our luggage...out! "great property - rooms need updating"
I was excited to stay here but service could be improved. When I checked into my room I noticed my bathroom had hair on floor, sink and in shower so I called front desk. The front desk apologized and did nothing but provide me with complimentary water. I called front desk the next morning and asked to speak with house keeping manager and she came to […] my room and said no one told her about my room. I have stayed in several great hotels and was looking forward to a return visit to the Claremont. Although there is a certain grandeur to the hotel, it has certainly seen better days. The lobby and restaurants are passable, but the room in which I stayed was dingy and had an odor. Then, there are the electrical problems. One outlet in a room, which […] clearly needed to be updated, is hardly sufficient. The bathroom was horribly small and did not include a tub. The show was miniscule. The ceiling was sloped which made it even more confining. In addition, as much as I like birds, I do not find pigeons noisily mating on the skylight (the only "window" in the room) an especially amusing activity. While enjoying a late night cocktail, I ask the bartender about a piece of wine-tasting equipment that was centrally located behind the bar. He said it had been out of service for quite some time. "Maybe time for a face lift for the Claremont?"
The hotel is pretty much due for remodeling for the decor seems dated and the carpet needs to be changed. Apart from that our room was lovely even if a little smaller than I thought it would be. The bathroom was wonderful and enormous; I think it was as big as the bedroom. The staff was really attentive and helpful, parking is overpriced.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
When we arrived, we were happy that we get an upgrade to a large room with view over San Francisco. Unfortunately, the room was next to a noisy outdoor fan so we asked for another room. We immediately got a new room. But to our surprise, it was a downgrade. We cannot understand how a hotel first upgrade a guest and then downgrade. We got a small room […] with no view and with no working air-condition. We noted a bottle of champagne and chocolate in the room. We asked in the lobby about the champagne and the chocolate, and we were informed that what was in the room belong to the room. On the evening before departure, the lobby called and asked if we had a bottle of champagne in our room. We responded that we had. The hotel wanted to collect the bottle. They sent a person to do so. We told about the room changes (the upgrade and then the downgrade) and that we were told the champagne belonged to the room. The hotel asked if they could send a bottle of champagne to the room. We were of course in no mood of sharing a bottle of champagne after the discussion...... We asked in an email the hotel how they felt about all this....still no response. Guess they feel ashamed.
