Great experience when staff went out of their way to get my daughter and me onto the day spa. Thank you, Claremont!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice place to stay in Berkeley or Oakland"
The stay includes a lot of use of the gym/spa facilities which seem very nice although I didn't take advantage of them. Overall it was a fine experience, inline with the price I paid and my expectations for this level of hotel. Kind of has a fun Overlook hotel to parts of it, which I enjoyed. :-)Genuine Expedia guest review

Response by The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa Thank you for your lovely review of The Claremont Hotel, Club & Spa! Did you know Vogue, Elle and Shape Magazines have named our Spa as one of the ten best of its kind in the country? From comfortable, peaceful accommodations to your appreciation of the views, we love knowing you enjoyed such a positive experience. We hope to see you again soon.
We stayed for 1 night for a last minute romantic getaway during the week. We upgraded from a standard room to a room with a bay view (the "hillside view" is actually a view of the roof and loud generators). It had a standard tub-shower combo, 2 sink vanity, and a comfortable king bed (but not a comfortable as the foam mattress we have at home). You […] get free access to the club as part of your stay including pool, huge hot tub, workout room, steam room, tennis. The spa was too expensive for me so I never even looked in but the pictures looked very nice. I think you get access to the spa with your room too, and only pay for the services. We ate at the Paragon which was a little overpriced for American comfort food. Service was very good. Parking was just over $20 with in and out privleges but if you like to walk, you can get to campus, the famous Telegraph ave. walking. Plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. We walked on a residential street and a friendly home owner let us pick his oranges. All in all, I'd stay again. Not for the room, but for the access to club and spa and the location. If you really want a view, you'd probably have to pay more for a better room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very high class nickled-and-dimed"
So, if a guest gets 15 minutes to allow a drop-off and run-in before parking fees obtain, how much should a minute extra cost? $8.00? And this on a 4-day hotel bill well of $850--with one of those mystery charges that the Attorney General just warned hotels about? It's classy and old-classy. Great pictures from 100 years ago. But, worse than the airlines, […] they stuff charges onto every natural event. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"spacious and elegant"
I was on a trip with my family, two adults and two teens. We were in the hotel for 5 nights. We stayed in a regular room w/ two doubles and a roll-a-way. The high ceilings, gracious public spaces and large closet made this actually work. We didn't eat in the restaurant but enjoyed several nearby restaurants. the Club and Spa are wonderful. And the service […] was top notch. I would definitely come back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I went with friends for a girls weekend and we had a great time! The hotel was beautiful and without exception the staff was warm, friendly and very hospitable. The only very minor issues were--since 3 of us shared a room there weren't enough electrical outlets---a power strip on the desk like some hotels have would have been great. And, light from […] the hallway spilled through around the door to hallway so we couldn't make the room really dark for sleeping. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very classy and worth the stay"
Overall the Claremont is a great hotel. The staff was courteous and professional. It is a classic, beautiful hotel with gorgeous interiors. The room was very nice albeit a bit small for the price and did show its age. The walls are also very thin and I felt as if I could hear other rooms pretty clearly. Still, it is a very nice hotel and I would absolutely […] stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Enjoyed the beautiful architecture and grand scale of the lobby, bar restaurants. Made me feel rich. Service was flawless. Efficient, warm, polite and full of solutions to my small problems. Enjoyed the hotel's emphasis on its historic past. I had a "classic" room, which I found large and comfortable. Never felt skimped.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent quality and dog friendly"
I have stayed here 20-25 times since 1982 and the service, cleanliness and quality have always been good, but have improved remarkably over the past 3 years. The service and staff, particularly including housekeeping staff, are as good as I've experienced in any 5 star hotel anywhere in the world. The location and views are world class and I usually […] choose to stay here if I'm in the Bay Area. I've recently been in San Francisco on short business trips and for convenience have stayed at the JW Marriott, the Fairmont and The Palace. None of them compare favorably to The Claremont. It is definitely worth paying extra for a Bay view room (165 and 265 are especially good). The hotel is truly dog friendly and my dogs enjoy their stays as much as we do ours. "Remnants of the Great Gatsby"
This is an old, classic hotel originally opened in 1915. The basic structure of the building, the registration desk, the rooms, and the Meritage Restaurant/Bar are a reflection of those times. Overall experience was unforgettable, staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Room cleanliness was impeccable. "Could be so much better"
When you approach The Claremont, you're immediately confronted with the massive facade and just KNOW that you're going to be in for the time of your life. Well, not entirely. The staff was nice and helpful, I have no complaints there. The hotel overall is quite nice, and it's interesting to see the photos of the hotel through the ages. Nice touches […] there. My room (a corner suite facing SF), was nice overall, but wasn't nearly as pleasant as it looked at first glance. First, the room smelled vaguely of smoke. I couldn't determine if it used to be a smoking room (and I requested non-smoking), so that was a little annoying to say the least. It wasn't so bad that it was unbearable, but it was bad enough to notice, and my clothes needed some air once I left the room to get the scent out. Each room has temperature control and while I could make the room warmer with that, it never really maintained a comfortable temperature. If the heat was on, it was fine, then as soon as the heat turned off it would take all of 5 minutes for the room to feel cold again. As I left the next day I left the Privacy sign on the door, but returned to my room fo find that the sign had been ignored and my room (unnecessarily) cleaned. What's the point of a sign if it's not going to be respected? Again, these aren't dealbreakers necessarily. Claremont is nice and has a lot of charm. But the overall experience I had was far from perfect. I'd stay there again, but I'd temper my expectations. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa We can't help but feel disappointed that we were not able to exceed your expectations in every way. While it is great to read that you enjoyed the old-world charm of our historic property, your ultimate comfort is of utmost importance and we always urge guests to let us know what we can do to make their stay a more enjoyable experience. It is truly regrettable that we were unable to do so for you while you were here. Thank you for your feedback. We hope that we can fully impress you with all that we have to offer for your next visit.
While the Claremont is beautiful from the outside, the rooms and hallways are in serious need of renovation. The first room they gave me smelled like urine. Even a 1/2 bottle of Febreeze didn't help. I called and was switched to a bigger room with a better view and less of a smell. You should know that they stop serving breakfast on Sunday at 9:30 so […] you can either grab some items from the bar or wait until the big brunch. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice way to spend a birthday."
We had a fine visit. We had a bay view, which was lovely. Comfortable bed, although the tv was to the side (so as to not block the view!) which was a little uncomfortable. Amenities are good, but you pay to stay at the Claremont. If I could have stayed another day I probably could have taken advantage of the spa, etc., but we didn't have time so it's […] not worth buying the extra package. "VIEWS to die for, dated rooms"
Amazing setting, with views of the whole bay. Great pool, tennis courts, with stunning views. The rooms are a bit dated, with heavy drapery, long hallways punctuated by a few random antiques. Great value for the money, but it could use a face lift.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa Thank you for sharing your impressions of The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. We couldn’t be more delighted that you enjoyed your time with us and found the views to be, as you put it, to die for! Did you know that our hotel dates all the way back to the early days of the Gold Rush? Our décor echoes the romantic history that it is so well known for. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back again.
It used to be an amazing place,I have stayed there many times. Now I found it very expensive ,dirty dishes left in the halls overnight and longer not picked up by room service. Also they took the mini bars out of the room,no vending machines so if I want a soda had to order through room service, what a rip off!!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa While we love to know you enjoy your location and pool areas, it is certainly regrettable to learn that your entire stay was not as positive. Attention to detail is always important to all of us and we do apologize if there were any dishes remaining in the hall from room service orders. If there is anything that we can do to make a stay more comfortable, our associates are always available and we regret not being able to provide you with a better impression while you were here, when it would have mattered the most. It is our hope that we can welcome you back again to provide you with the experience you deserve. Thank you.

It is our hope that we can welcome you back again to The Claremont Hotel Club and Spa!
"Not up to the levels of past years"
I have been staying at the Claremont for years. I am there three or four times a year. I must say that the last year or so there has been a marked decline in service. No one at the front to help when I pull up, no bellman otherwise anywhere in sight, the parking exit unattended, things breaking, a short-staffed front desk, etc., etc. What is going on? […] They can do better. This is an East Bay classic and they need to mind their knitting a little more and get back to the hight standards they used to have. Dare I say it is getting tired? The Claremont is a treasure and should be managed as such. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Stay in Berkeley after 49ers Game"
This was a very quick overnight stay. Paying for parking when we already paid $$$ for the room was a bit of a downer. Also they tack on a $25 resort fee. The facilities are in need of updating but we found our room comfortable and quiet. Very beautiful views of the bay from our room and many parts of the hotel. Over all the stay was average.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Except for the pool cafe, everything was excellent"
I loved the charm of the Claremont. There is no good place for casual dining or a snack. The pool cafe was mediocre and they left the area unbussed for hours, guess the guests were to have done it themselves and didn't. On the day I was hoping for a blended fruity drink, the pool bar was closed. Otherwise loved my stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

The service in the restaurant was the worst I have had in a long time. At the price point it is at, the service should be impeccable. I have stayed at the Claremont several times before and even the waiting staff on the restaurant know us. Usually, Expedia customers get rooms that are not very well located and have no view. "be careful with the "unpublished rates" program"
We stayied here as a result of the "unpublished 40% off" program with Expedia. There was $50 in additional charges for parking and "resort fee" that I did not anticipate. Our many resort amenities include 3 pools, tennis courts, Mind & Body Center, fitness center, yoga studio, Spa and a Kid's Club day camp for guests to enjoy. Thank you for your comments, if there is anything else we could have done to improve your experience we would love to know.
The hotel is beautiful. Unfortunately we were there for a single evening, arriving late leaving mid-morning. After a long day of travel there was not a quiet place to have a bite and a drink at ten pm. The alternative was a very lively bar scene with drunken wedding parties. After a good nights sleep, we went down to find out that breakfast closed earlier […] than advertised and with three dining facilities, nothing was available at 9:45 in the morning. As we were departing at 10:15, our only alternative was a coffee and croissant. This may be a good hotel, but you need to plan your day around their schedule. "Best hotel in the area"
The only type of room available at the time of booking was the 'Classic.' It was clean but showing it's age; somewhat small with no view to speak of. The room had a unique smell, much the same as my grandmothers house. The staff was excellent and polite. The food was fantastic. We didn't get a chance to visit the spa but had to pay the spa/resort fee […] anyway. Despite 2 separate private events/parties going on at the time of our visit, and a few loud after parties next to and above our room, we enjoyed our stay and will be back. Tip to first time guests: Use valet parking because even if you don't, you still have to pay $25/day to self-park. It doesn't take the valet staff long at all to get your car pulled around.
