"Luxurious, Beautiful, & Relaxing"
Really nice resort. The pool area was amazing, the room was very well appointed with nice fixtures & a huge king bed on the top floor. The beach was spectacular even nicer waters then at Magen's bay a little rocky here & there but swimming & snorkeling were fantastic. The food was pretty good we had the burgers & mahi mahi wrap which was delicious. […] Only stayed for a couple nights but the staff was very helpful the girl at the front desk practically let me pick our room. The only two disappointments were it seemed all the ice machines were broken & vending machines were empty. The hotel property is gorgeous. Pool is beautiful along with the grounds. The views are unreal. Nice tennis courts and basketball court. Plenty of activities and theme nights at hotel. Lots of places to eat and you can catch the ferry to St John for $15 round trip in Red Hook. I felt very safe at the hotel and red hook area. This is very important for me when I travel. The people were friendly both at the hotel and red hook. Down side: could not find an ice machine that worked. Towels were a 3.5 rated along with the comfort of bed and linens. Food: Breakfast Buffett was ok. Lunch Buffett is VERY Good. Added value its next to pool and beach. Dinner: Not so good. I like to relax and enjoy dinner. Just not organized and food was ok. We ate out 2 of the 5 nights. We paid for all inclusiveness. I think if they had better management that stayed on top of the staff and paid attention to detail this could be a 4 star hotel. I was concerned about this stay bc reviews were not so great for this property. We loved our stay here. The staff was extremely friendly from Norris who took us on a fantastic tour of the property as he brought us to our room first day to Rosa, who comes to the hotel to share about shopping. "No hot water,"
We were stuck in St. Thomas because of plane issues and this was the only place we could find a room. We paid a very high rate(expected because it was last minute) but learned this is usually an all inclusive and the rate we were paying was not, so everything was extra. The real issue however is when we got up very early for our resumed flight there […] was no hot water. An ice cold shower at 4:45am is not what we had in mind. The snorkeling was awesome. There was a reef two feet from the gorgeous white sand beach. The staff always had a friendly smile. 2 Rooms, 8 days! Below is a brief summary of a multitude of negative comments and experiences we received during our stay there—Bad, Bad, Bad---Location was nice but staff, accommodations, services and especially the staffs cooperation and desire to please guests, on their once in a lifetime trip, was worse than poor, it was non-existent! The staff […] did not care to service the guests. We wasted half our time moving or taking care of ourselves instead of enjoying what we paid for and was promised and expected. 1. ARRIVAL—Rooms were dirty with hairs in bed. No A/C 2. Had to eventually move 4 times, Rooms with No A/C, or very little A/C, 3. In the 3rd room the toilet had a severe leak. In the 4th room the A/C barely worked. 4. No bath towels in rooms, had to use hair dryer to dry children. We made repeated calls with statements to go to pool to get some. None at pool! Finally some arrived hours later, too late! 5. Pool towels ran out daily, 2/22 they had no towels to begin with! 6. Security came to our room one night to warn us about noise but it was the room next door—they got the wrong room, too late everyone was up at that point. 7. Daily schedule advertised kids’ movie show at 7 PM but never had one. 8. They said then we would get PPV (Pay per View) free but PPV didn’t work! 9. We were disappointed to find that the beach and swimming pools were so far from the resort. A shuttle was provided to get to the beach however it was not easy to board the shuttle. We had a family of four, we purchased the all inclusive package. Turns out they only have 1 place to eat where you are seated and served. Baci has 50 seats, the hotel has 300 rooms so we were forced to eat at the buffet. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was all buffet food. The main staples of the dinner service were mac and cheese, rice and beans and pasta. […] Not at all what I was expecting having stayed at other all inclusive resorts. Staff is nice when you check in, but if you need anything during your stay, don't count on your needs being met. I had to call every night to have towels delivered so we could shower, seems housekeeping kept forgetting to leave clean towels. Regarding activities, they put out a daily paper with all the activities for the day, similar to a cruise ship, however, 80% of the activities never happened. They advertised movies each night, but they were not where they said they were going to be and then they directed us to a room under construction, needless to say the 4 nights we were there no movie. My daughtered a glass of milk, response from server we don't have any milk. I ordered a diet coke, response we are out of diet coke. "Kids Club made the stay worthwhile"
The exterior of hotel was rough around the edges. Walkways and elevators were in disrepair. The rooms however were nicer and the bathrooms were also. My husband and I arrived at the hotel with my sister-in-law and her fiance. To our shock and suprise, the entire lobby was under construction. As we are trying to check in, all we can hear are jack hammers and drilling! Expedia NOR the Sugar bay site said anything about the hotel being under construction. Only one of our rooms was "ready". We were a […] bit upset, but agreed to just crash in one room until the other was ready. The front desk associate assured us that our rooms would be next to each other. After an extremely long check-in process (including signing WAIVERS!) we finally recieved our keys. We get up to the "clean and ready" room only to open the door to a room that was trashed. There was water everywhere, the bed was obviously slept in, and there was garbage in the trash cans. We went back downstairs, annoyed, but hopeful that we would get another room to our liking. When we got back down to the desk, they told us that there were no other rooms available for us (there were people checking in around us with no problems). Now we started to get really irritated, so we asked to speak to a manager. The Front office Manager, Natasha, came up to us (with quite the attitude after speaking to other guests having a similar issue) and told us, and I quote, "If you don't like it here, you can leave. Go have lunch and think it over. We will release you of any fees and you can call Expedia and go somewhere else." We were completely taken back by her attitude and demeanor. The only thing I can say about this place is . . . it is a rip off!! It tries to be a resort facility but really, the only thing to do is hang out by the pool. The places to eat ARE CRAZY EXPENSIVE!! Meaning 16.00 dollars for a kids meal of dry spaghetti noodles. Just got home today from our say here. Amazing view and the first half day everything seems good, they even had soft serve ice cream which our 2 year old loved. That was the last day the ice cream machine worked, they never fixed it after that. I We have an ice bucket in our room like most hotels so you would think there would be an ice machine close […] by. Wrong! I searched floors up and down side to side and either it was removed or not working. First breakfast we ask for glass of milk, they said they were out. Now hot water in the entire resort one morning. We called 4 times to get a blanket until one came. Air conditioning in our room stopped working, they didn't think it was important enough to come look at it. The hotel is clean but dated and most things if it breaks they don't fix it unless its completely necessary. I think the biggest complaint is the rudeness of the staff. I admit many of the staff were great but a good amount of them seemed to be bothered by any requests and not helpful. Eye contact and friendliness was limited to the stand outs on staff. Oh and another thing, if you have kids I really don't this a good place. There is nothing to do for kids except the "Kids Club" which is a room that we never saw a kid in. Food for kids? None. "I should have trusted the past reviews and remarks"
After not having a lot of choices for an all inclusive resort on St.Thomas, we booked our stay at Sugar Bay. At check in we had to remind the staff we needed armbands since we knew we purchased the all inclusive package. Bands were applied and we dropped off our luggage in the room and went to the pool for a drink and were asked for money for drinks. […] Went back up to the counter and were told our reservations didn't include the all inclusive and WE'D need to call Expedia to solve the problem. After reminding the staff we were in a foreign country and didn't have internet he told us we could pay to use the hotel computer. Not happy at this point. I called Expedia after finding the number and was on hold for 45 minutes since the hotel manager felt the need to talk with other guests before taking the call. When confronted on why it was taking so long, he acted confused and made the corrections. I'm still not sure why the staff could not assist us in dealing with this and made us start the process. Very poor customer service. A few days later we requested a few towels. After calling both the housekeeping staff and guest services desk via hotel phone, no one answered. We went to the lobby and requested the towels and it took 35 minutes for 2 towels to arrive and the same manager couldn't even tell me when I was 20' away that the towels had arrived. "Nice hotel with private beach/all inclusive option"
A friend and my daughter accompanied me to this resort for a winter get away vacation in January. It was my first all-inclusive vacation and it was worth it! We were greeted pleasantly at the entrance and offered a rum punch. Check in was a snap and we were on the beach within minutes after arrival. The weather in January was low 80's and sunny all […] 5 days of our stay. There could have been more food options, however, the food and drinks were good (especially breakfast). The rooms were clean, but housekeeping could have done a better job of stocking enough supplies. When you get off the plane there are plenty of cabs to take you to the resort, no need to arrange that ahead of time. Bring your passport if you have one just in case you wish to travel to the BVI. I suggest packing some water shoes because the ocean access is rocky in some areas. "Noisy room, incompetent staff, long lines. Avoid"
My wife & I stayed at Sugar Bay for a long weekend trip. Very bad experience! The staff called our room at 1:30am on the first night because they wanted to see who was staying in the room (they had apparently not marked it down in the computer system when we checked in earlier that day). On the 2nd night of our trip we had to switch rooms at 1:30am […] b/c of a loud banging noise from an electrical utility closet one floor below. We tried to call the front desk a few times about the noise with no answer, so we ended up going thru hotels.com who arranged our change to the new room. The beach is rocky and practically un-swimmable! The breakfast was crowded, with a long line (despite several empty tables), and they ran out of items. We're glad we didn't do all inclusive for the trip. We didn't spend much time at the resort other than to sleep, but wished we had saved our money and stayed somewhere else. "Not as good as other all-inclusives"
I have been to 3 all-inclusive hotels in Mexico, two in Punta Cana and one in Jamaica. This hotel did not seem to cater to the "you do not need money since it is all-inclusive" expectation. Staff was very nice. Main building was undergoing major construction and very little was explained to guests. Very hard to find any type of beverage early in the […] day. I went to the pool which is down 100 stairs at 8am. I was unable to get any sort of cold drink down there until the restaurants opened at 11:30am. I took the shuttle back up to the lobby to find the café on the 2nd floor was out of all soda in the machine. Bar in the main restaurant was not open. Frustrating. Most all inclusive hotels have many self service options for non-alcoholic beverages or stock some in your room refrigerator. Only option was to buy a drink in the gift shop. I also expected more dining options for lunch and breakfast. I would not spend the money for this all-inclusive. Mexico and Punta Cana offer much more for much less. Sugar bay staff greeted us every morning, breakfast buffet was good. Beach was small but well maintained. We went all inclusive and the choice of meals and drinks were ample. If you are going to be lazy they have a shuttle to get you to the beach and pools, if not you will walk down 98 stairs to get there. Our room was clean and nice. "Any port in a storm"
After being stranded in St Thomas for 5 days after the blizzard, we booked this hotel quickly online quickly. The room cost nearly as much for 5 days as the condo we rented for the previous 2 weeks on beautiful Sapphire beach. (No compensation from the airlines, so much for next years vacation budget.) There were no rental cars available. We arrived […] at about 1AM and the front desk staff were very friendly. They checked us in even though they did not yet have the Expedia booking info. There was a lot of construction going on at the hotel. The half the lobby was closed with floor work, and the main driveway was being teared up for repaving. Buffet breakfast was NYC expensive.There was not much within walking distance so I inquired about the meal plan option that I saw was available on Expedia. The hotel said that can only be booked through Expedia, so I called Expedia, who were very helpful, they had to call the hotel, but no dice. Cost would be about double. We declined - it turned out to be the right decision after we dined in the main dining room the second night. 3 meal choices. Poor quality and expensive. Feelings were shared by many of the other guests. After that, we ate elsewhere. The beach was 99 step down after riding the elevator to the bottom floor. They also have a shuttle from the lobby. We stayed here for 1 week (over New Years)... with 9 people, including 3 kids. We loved staying at this resort... including: great beach with plenty of sun chairs & soft sand, anytime access to snorkling & kayaking, lots of space in the pool & hot tub, fun times at the bumper boats & mini golf, loved seeing the iguanas & cats every day, Kids Club was […] a favorite with our kids, resort staff was very friendly & accomodating, restaurants had great food anytime of the day, entertainment available at night in the main building, and plenty of great drinks available anytime! I would only recommend this hotel to a friend with an explanation. The hotel needs a full renovation and updating. Also, there does not seem to be a competent management team. The best food was the mid-day meal at the Mangrove restaurant or Pimentos. The hamburgers and fries were really good but the mahi-mahi wrap was exceptional. The restaurant manager, Erik, was so helpful and personable. One day, he brought our hamburgers to where we were lounging pool side (yes, we were too lazy to go back and get them after we ordered!) […] He made us feel very special, but luckily for all of the guests, he does it with everyone... I would give the Italian restaurant next to Mangrove less than 2-stars. "Not coming back"
I had stayed here several years ago when Sugar Bay was under different management and we were very happy. Decided to go back again but that was a mistake! The hotel was under renovation and they worked late into the night (very noisy) waking us up. The help was very rude and not friendly. They did not clean our room. Then one night they had a band play […] until 10:00 pm and the noise was so loud we could not fall asleep. We understand that many people want to have a good time at night and want to listen to music but not at the expensive of everyone staying at the hotel. Excellent location close to Red Hook restaurants etc. Nice large rooms, good beach, large pool area. Large property so some walking through the beautiful landscaped grounds required. Would recommend visiting some of the nearby restaurants rather than doing all inclusive, although the breakfast buffet was good.Genuine Expedia guest review
