The Ikebukuro airport limousine stops at 2 hotels. We stayed in both during a November 2012 trip. For $30 more per night, the Metroplitan-the other one- is better. We needed a hotel for one night after we flew in, but before we could take the train out. There wasn't much choice because it was just a few days before arrival but this hotel seemed to have the best mix of price and location. The location isn't terrible; Ikebukuro is one of the major train stations in Tokyo and is easy to get to. The hotel is maybe […] a 5-10 minute walk from there, the hardest part is figuring out which side of the station to exit. There's not a lot to do in this area though, you're basically going to use it as a jumping-off-point to other areas of the city. Once we got to the hotel it was obvious that this wasn't a fancy place. The lobby looked run down and almost had the atmosphere of a doctor's waiting room. Checkin was reasonably efficient, but I was disappointed with the room. The room was small and cramped, but that comes with Tokyo and most hotels are like that, however the beds were hard as a rock. Wallpaper was torn off the wall in areas, and while the room didn't appear unclean in any way, it just was tired and in need of refurbishing. The rooms are very small. The bathroom is just barely 6' 4", the door is not. There is no thermostat in the room, just a fan control. You have to repeatedly bother the hotel to turn it down. The window does not open. Bring a network (cat 5) cable and a router if you want to use wifi. The only good was how close things were. We spend about 8 weeks a year on vacation - mostly in Europe. We stayed at the Sunshine City Prince because of the cost. This hotel was perfect for our one week stay. The hotel is serviced by the Limousine Bus - door to door service from Narita (about one hour+ each way). The room was small but very efficient and clean. It is located in the Sunshine […] City mall - lots of shops and about fifty small restaurants. It includes an aquarium, planetarium, observatory, museum, Toyota interactive showroom & more. Across the street - a grocery store & connected to the Marunouchi Subway Line & about 3 blocks from the Yamanote JR Train, Yurakucho & Fukutoshin Subway - very well located (lots of shops & restaurants in those three blocks - incl. Tokyo Hands, Seibu and Tobu). It was easy to get around Tokyo - about 25 min on train/subway to Ginza, 9 min to Shinjuku, 22 min Asakusa - used named Pasmo card (half price for the kids). Discounted Disneyland tickets at the train station & there in 45 min. Tokyo is a very clean city, smokers have designated areas, the Japanese people are very gracious and helpful, there are several things to do and see, and the food is great. I would highly recommend this budget hotel and look forward to staying there again. Sunshine City Prince Hotel is a simple and clean place to stay. You're located in Ikebukuro, Tokyo so the focus is more on shopping than shrines and country-side. There's 2 subway stations. 1 is essentially through the shopping center basement walkway and the other is a block away. Definitely invest in a PASMO train card for easier train station traveling. […] The hotel is on top of a shopping mall so there's plenty of restaurants if the weather is bad or you don't feel like going out. Observation floor is great to get a bird's eye view and take some really nice city pictures. Good places to eat around the area too. I really satisfied with this hotel for the convinience; there's 24 hour convinience store at the ground level, close to any big cities of Tokyo. Also there was an express shuttle bus between this hotel and Narita/Haneda Airports. The only thing that I didn't satisfy was this hotel has no coin loundry.

My stay was wonderful! The room was a nice size and very well taken care of. The staff was very friendly and were happy to help in English when necessary. Daily tea packets and plenty of personal care items were provided, and the in-hotel Family Mart was very convenient. Although there isn't an international ATM accepting anything but Citibank cards […] and eating in-hotel is pricey, there are plenty of post offices (with international ATMs), tasty and affordable restaurants, and shopping/entertainment opportunities both in Sunshine City and the surrounding area, not to mention it's only a quick walk to Ikebukuro station. A LOT of foreign travelers. Which can be bothersome to some people, due to the crowd and noise that they create at the lobby. They do not wait for people to get out from elevators and try to squeeze themselves, talk and laugh really loud at the hallway during night etc. Only six elevators in such a large 40-ish story building. It seems adequate but […] at times we waited a long time and ended up being in a full house for a few minutes, while the elevator tries to stop at every single floor. Expect to wait 5-10 min at the rush hour. Location is okay, lots to shop around at the sunshine city mall (which can be good place to shop the last minute before the bus leaves) a little far from stations so we ended up using cabs a lot. The rooms we stayed were the largest of ever stayed hotel in Japan, but the air was too dry at night and we also heard kids running and neighbor having sex at 3am (only people with jetlags would be awake at such time). The wall seemed thick but Ceilings and floor transmit a lot of noise. Internet is LAN only (not free) and on and off reliability. The TV is small old school with analog reception. The Convenience store (family mart) made up most of bad experience since they are open 24 hrs and have lots of food and snack. This time, we chose this hotel as a compromise since the Yen was going to highIf we are still on a budget, we might choose this hotel again since it is still decent value for the price. Sup-bar level of staff at the best. They all seemed quite tired from group of foreign travelers with their limited ability to communicate. Hotel has excellent location. It is a mere 4 minutes regular walking to the Higashi-Ikebukuro Metro Station. It is 8-10 minutes walk to the Ikebukuro station if you want to use the JR-Yamanote line. It is inside Sunshine City and you can do lots of eating and shopping within its walls. Additonally, there is a direct service of the Airport Limousine […] bus from Narita to the hotel which is really convenient and worry-free. The standard rooms however are very small but CLEAN ( which is very important ) , so it is still okay as you only sleep there anyway. For the rate we got from Hotels.com, it is value for money. Although the rooms are ultra tiny, this hotel is in a very good location. It's located a few blocks from the Ikebukuro JR train station - making it convenient. It's also attached to the Sunshine City Mall and the general Sunshine City area. Compared to where I stayed last year (The Tokyo Metropolitan Hotel which is on the other side of the Ikebukuro […] train station) this hotel is located where more of the local stores, eateries and nightlife spots are located. The rooms are tiny, but the bed was very comfortable. I went with my boyfriend and we both had large pieces of luggage - and there was definitely not enough space for both of our luggage to be out on the floor at the same time. I made the choice to unpack and utilize the shelves and closet - which isn't enough for two people to use at the same time - and that at least created space for him to lay his luggage down while I tucked mine away between the bed and the desk. The ONLY drawback (to me) for this hotel is that you have to pay for Internet - per day. The fee is pretty low, but on a daily basis it starts to add up - especially since in my opinion, the connection isn't that stable. Sometimes the connection would grind to a halt - even when all I was doing was checking email. Otherwise, this is a great location - convenient to other Tokyo districts. The Sunshine Prince is not a fancy hotel. You bring your own bags up to your room, there are tours in and out of the lobby all the time. But for shopping at Otome Road, it couldn't be more convenient. For our first trip to Tokyo, we just picked one that was the cheapest. The room was small but ok. It was located close to tons of shops and not too far from the subway. Overall it was ok, not great not terrible. The staff was nice and helped when we needed it. Also, the convient store in the hotel was very nice and convient.

This is a great hotel right in the middle of all the action. Huge American mall connected to the hotel and all the American fast food restaurants including Shakey's nearby. Hotel rooms are small so only pack 1-2 bags (about 7'x9' in the main area). Bathrooms are small too but this is Japan. They do have non-smoking rooms!

Conveniently located, with ~10 mins walking distance to the Ikebukuro JR station with Parco and Seibu departmental store, and it is just a few stops away from Shinjuku and Shibuya. We stayed in a corner 2 double bed room for 10 nights in Dec 2012. Positive: Room rate is reasonable(special discount eligible for longer stay), hotel is within Sunshine City mall(lots of shop), Ikebukuro station is 10 to 15 walk away, Easy access(less than 20 minutes from Ikebukuro station train ride) to Ueno station, Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya […] station. 24 hour Seiyu supermart(better selection than the smaller Family Mart in the hotel) is just accross the road from the hotel. Negatives: Very old curtain, bed sheet cover and carpet, no wi fi in rooms(only cable, wi fi access only at the less than decent lobby), surprisingly poor daily cleaning of wc, The whole hotel looks old and feel old--100% a no frill tourist class hotel. In for a 10 night stay to do business in Tokyo I found the hotel to be quite comfortable with all the amenities which anyone could require, although the fridge was a little small. The Family Mart located in the lobby was very convenient although I would advise Western travellers to BYO tea and coffee as there is only green tea in the rooms. Comfortable stay at Sunshine City, staff were very efficient and spoke English. The hotel is very big and therefore waiting times at lifts can be lengthy, the airconditioning in the room didn't work very well and once the bathroom was used it was very warm and uncomfortable in the room. It would have been useful for the hotel staff to inform us about earthquake procedures when checking in as there was a tremor during our stay and we had no idea what to do - I believe the written information is provided in each room but we weren't aware of that.
