I booked the Monarch Resort because of the convenient location and the cheap rates. I wasn't looking for a high-end resort, just some place to crash after the wedding I was attending. The front desk service was very polite and prompt. Our room was all set up for us and clean. Except I did notice a bottle cap underneath our bed. The walls were pretty […] thin, we were kept up in the night by our neighbors who seemed to have a bit too much to drink. The sheets were super thin and cheap feeling, I was glad that I was only sleeping in that bed for one night. The next morning after I had showered, a maid knocked on the door once and came on in. She had gotten our room number mixed up with another room. She was polite about it, but I found it quite strange and unprofessional that she was holding just a post-it with room numbers written all over it. I'm guessing it was a list of all the rooms that had been checked out of that morning. If you are looking for a hotel that is cheap and located near the heart of Pacific Grove, then the Monarch Resort is a good choice. But if you just drive along Lighthouse Ave, you will notice DOZENS of hotels to choose from. I'm sure there are nicer ones with similar rates around, you just have to do your research! Read more

great location right next to 17 mile drive and the coast. the TV could be a flat screen instead of the big boxy, non-HD version. all and all a good place to stay at the right price point.

It was restful stay and we enjoyed the walk along the beach from pacific grove to fisherman's wharf. Room was clean. Could use some update the amenity. Breakfast was adequate. Landscape maintenance was good.

The hotel was clean and comfortable. Not luxurious but nice. The best part was the quiet and serene area. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the Cannery Row or towntown areas.. Pacific Grove is just a beautiful town no matter how you look at it. If a person is on a budget, this is a great alternative.

We enjoyed the lovely plantings throughout the hallways and the comfortable, roomy rooms. The breakfast room and offerings were adequate, the pool area very nice, and the softness of the beds just as we prefer. We would stay here again.

Place is great for people on a budget. Place was a little out dated but clean . Rooms are big enough. Big bathrooms . Location is great. Our beds were uncomfortable. Room 120 two double beds.. breakfast was ok.

Hotel is fine but has some deferred maintenance. our key cards stopped working, the key card reader didn't work at all in the pool area (so we had to exit through a side gate and go in front door), minifridge in room was noisy and bed was creaky. Clean though and great location.

This hotel was sub-par compared to the 3 star rating. The surrounding neighborhood is very nice but the resort is antiquated. The service was average and only had one receptionist. Checking in was very time consuming and inconvenient. Don't expect much when staying at this hotel

The check in was the strangest I've ever had. When I handed over my AmEx to pay, which has both my personal and business name and picture on it, I was asked is this for my business or personal. I said it's either, it's my own business. She stated they only like to take personal credit cards because they can't tell if it's a Sole Proprietor, LLC, etc. […] Who cares what type of business mine is and it's none of her business! I'd already paid for the room by this card, I might add, over the internet, and she was taking a card for incidentals. This was the most absurd thing I've ever dealt with at a check in. Business people travel all over the world with business AmEx cards, I'm sure they don't have to explain what type of a business they are with! She then had me sign a paper, which was folded where I couldn't see the top half. I shouldn't have signed it, but I did. When I went to look at what I was signing, because it was hidden, she wouldn't let me and said it was confidential, it was the commissions being paid to whomever I booked the room through. Again, NEVER have I had to sign something like this, and I shouldn't have signed it at all because I really didn't know what I was signing. It could have been anything! Other than that, the stay was fine. I highly recommend changing your check-in process, I would not stay there again because of this. Too many other choices of places to stay and not have to deal with this absurdity. Read more

The use of the word "Resort"n the name, this was an entirely ordinary Best Western motel. Our's was supposed to be a "deluxe" room w/fireplace. Turns out there was nothing deluxe about it and in particular, NO FIREPLACE. The check-in staff was vaguely indifferent to questions and requests and were persistently averse to making eye contact with guests. […] Barely sufficient hot water in the shower. The hallway vending machine was broken. Nonetheless, the motel is close to the shoreline sights and the entrance to 17-mile drive. So if you want convenience and your expectations are low, you will not be disappointed. Read more

The hotel staff did not really know how to deal with paperwork. We were called by hotel staff to bring down receipts at 10pm to show that we had paid through Expedia. When we got down there we could clearly see they already had the Expedia paperwork...they also did not clean our room for the second day/night stay. The only redeeming quality was the […] heated pool and the fireplace with complimentary log per night stay for the King Deluxe room with fireplace. We even got questioned by hotel staff upon leaving the continental breakfast as though we were some vagrants, such as who are we, what room are we in etc. None of the other guests were questioned. The Monarch Resort is in a lovely woodsy location in Pacific Grove, not too far from the waters edge. The hotel has been maintained through the years, and the bedroom was nicely furnished. It was clean, a great mattress and nicely appointed. We didn't use the pool, but it looked fresh and inviting. The breakfast fare was sufficient with sweet rolls,cereal, […] hot coffee and tea. The in room fireplace with firelog, is a nice touch. The room was cozy-small with a small balcony. The internet access was on but spotty. The complimentary continental breakfast was good with fresh pastries, eggs, fruit, cereals, juices, and coffees. We were generally unhappy with our treattment at this hotel. In addition to the bad attitude at check-in their own in-house information book in the room advertised cheese and wine in the lobby daily from 5 to 7 pm. We went to the lobby and there was no sign of this. When we enquired, the person at reception said "Oh that has been discontinued" with […] no other explanation. Maybe it would be a good idea if they changed that page. When we got back to the room after dinner we found the TV did not work. Altogether a very poor experience for the amount we paid. Read more

Still trying to decide if this hotel is a good value. Monterey peninsula is pricey & we chose the Monarch for it's room price, location & apparent amenities. Property is dated, but clean. Continental breakfast has many items, but food is mediocre at best. TV is old and has a poor picture. At check in we found that our frig did not work. Night desk person […] said he was only employee on duty (which was the case each night), but he did eventually get us another frig. The room, a single queen with a fireplace and balcony, was very nice. The bed was comfortable and the room was large and airy, with lots of room to move around. Our balcony overlooked the pool and spa area, so there were people out playing the whole time, but it was never too loud or unpleasant in any way - and the noise disappeared completely the […] moment the glass sliding door was closed. We didn't use the fireplace the first night, but the complimentary Duraflame log was there for our use. It warmed up the room a bit too much, but...fire's hot, right? It also set the atmosphere perfectly. All in all, this room made us feel like we were alone in our own private world - exactly what we wanted. The hotel is located in an area that seems mostly residential, but that only adds to the charm. I certainly never expected to run into a doe and her fawn when I went out for a stroll, but they passed only a few feet from me, creating another magical moment on a perfect weekend. I've seen others complain about the Continental Breakfast. We didn't use it ourselves, waking late and wanting to explore the local restaurants and diners. Read more

We were surprised when we did not find a microwave and a refrigerator in the room - is it a motel? We stayed here before and microwave and fridge were available. So the conclusion - not in every room -- confusing, at least. Very (i mean it) squeaky bed made our night very uncomfortable. We loved the sauna though. Next stay? Maybe...
