We booked through Hotels.com (obviously) but when we got there, the hotel had no record of us having done so. I had to put a pre-auth on my card for the room while they tried to find the reservation which would end up as an actual charge if they couldn't by the time I had to check out. Later that night at about 2am when we got back our room key didn't […] work - they had disabled it to force us to come down to the front desk because they found our reservation and needed my card to reverse the pre-auth. Kindof a strange way to do that... The water temperature was horrible and fluctuated every few seconds. I know the hotel is old and this is Venice we're talking about but I'd expect it to be a little better than that. Overall we had a roof over our heads and a bed with sheets on it so I can't complain all THAT much ;) Though I can say I'll never stay here again. Read more

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. The location is superb; very close to the Piazza San Marco. Our room was high up, so we had a great view of the dome of the basilica and of one of the bell towers. When we closed the shutters it was remarkably quiet. One caveat; getting to our room involved taking a number of sets of stairs (or two […] elevators) and winding our way through the hallways. Although we loved our room, and got a kick out of learning the route, if other travelers have any mobility issues, they should make sure their room is more easily accessible. Also, it is on a narrow little street, like many in Venice. It helped us to use overhead photos from Google Earth, as well as Google Maps directions, to help us find the street in our jet-lagged state. Breakfast was decent, with a number of items from which to choose. Front desk staff were helpful when we had specific questions, and spoke English. Hard to be closer to Piazza San Marco and the main vaporetto (bus boat) stops in Venice. Also to the main "restaurant rows" of the town. The location of the hotel can't be beat, since it's a two minute walk from San Marco and a 5-10 minute walk to the Rialto Bridge. The location is super just a few minutes walking distance from San Marco Square. The bar tender is great and full of great tips. The room was right by the elevator LOUD as the window faces the street and the vendors start working at 5 am. The bed was to be a queen/full it was 2 twins (small twins) pushed together and honestly was so hard we think after […] looking at it that is the box spring matress! We asked the front desk clerk for 2 keys as were seperate ways for the day and needed to charge the camera batteries and our iPad. He refused and YELLED at us, then he asked his manager who again refused and continued to YELL at us - not a nice experience at all. The breakfast is a 1 on a scale of 1 to 5 the only good part is the coffee and juice, the bread is stale, the meats and cheese were dried out and they recyle table after table the croissants and rolls that the prior table doesn't eat. Plus you are greated by a very strict hostess who allows you to sit only where you are told. All of the tables are 2 tops and you are rushed in and out of there. We realize that Hotels in Venice are not new and modern, but the fact that air conditioning was not allowed to be turned on due to the Italian Government until May 1st was very upsetting considering we were on the 4th floor, the only relief from the warm room was to open your windows which then allowed mosquitos in. We killed at least 10 on the walls […] of the room that afterwords looked like blood splatter. We have bites all over us, but the real kicker was how we had to get to our room. Up the elevator to floor 2, go down 3 separate hallways, down a flight of stairs, through a metal door into another building, then through another metal door( which you hoped your card worked to open) then up another elevator to floor 2, and then walk up two flights of narrow steps to a hot room full of mosquitos. The staff and amenities were, for the most part, very accommodating. I was impressed that there were computers in the hotel lobby available for internet use at a reasonable price (3 euro for 30 minutes). My only issue with the entire room (which also included a closet, a safe, a tiny television, a full size bed, two nightstands, and a view of the top of San Marco square [when positioning your head correctly, staring to the left outside the window]) was that the shower head did not function properly, releasing water on a steady stream, instead of a uniformed spray. The lobby area also included additional seating (rare for Venice) a bar for guests (also rare) and and early breakfast. The best part of Hotel Panada as a whole would definitely be the staff. Travelling alone in a city visited by millions every year, I felt very safe, secure, and at home for my short (two night) visit. Be sure to stop in their fully stocked bar and have a chat with the bar tender, a very friendly Filipino man, that can assist you with suggestions off the "beaten" path. The hotel is located literally in the heart of the tourist-area of Venice, which is both nice and also a bit of a pain because it means you have a pretty far walk if you want to eat anywhere that isn't overpriced and tourist-centric. I suppose it would be difficult to find a hotel […] in Venice without bed bugs, given how old everything is and how close together, but it's not so pleasant to find one crawling on your bed in the middle of the day. (Talk about not afraid of anything! Aren't bed bugs supposed to hide when people are moving?) It took about 5 minutes to walk to our room from the entrance. I think it added character, but for some people having to walk up 2.5 flights of stairs, around a corner, down a ramp, up a ramp, down another flight, through a security door, around a corner, through another door (labeled with a different hotel name), then up 2 more flights of steps might be either confusing or difficult, so keep that in mind. Getting to the hotel was easy though you have to remember Venice is a city of small narrow lanes and lots of steps. So be prepared to haul your luggage up and down some steps. We had to navigate through a sequence of elevator, walking through some good and bad corridors, through two doors that required the hotel key to open and winding stairs with about 70 odd steps to reach our room on the 4th floor. I checked with the hotel staff if I could get a different room but they said other rooms were not in the Expedia rates. Wonder what someone on the aged side or with any medical conditions would have done with this room! The hotel staff helped us with our luggage while checking in but it was a big workout, hauling our luggage from our room to the ground floor while we checked-out. The room size was good considering Venice and had a comfortable bed and the extra bed that we had asked for. The wireless access requires a userid and password that expires every two hours (nuisance) but hotel will give you as many as you need. The free continental breakfast was a real bonus in the otherwise very expensive Venice! I would recommend this hotel only if you are getting a very good rate and are physically fit. Otherwise, insist on a lower floor or a floor with elevator access. Read more

We had rooms 500 & 501 - a bit of a challenge to get through the maze of hotel corridors, stairs & the world's slowest lift - but worth it for the view across the rooftops of the Basilica domes and statues.
