"Perfect place for a few days"
Price was ryghtGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I booked this place in January for a trip in June. Unfortunately the hotel had changed hands in that time and some services were no longer offered (boo!) But the staff was great, in particular Ashley at the front desk was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the city and gave us some great advice about sight seeing and dining. On to the room. The room […] was small in typical San Francisco style, but not cramped. It was painted a cheery bright yellow and had great reproductions of old posters for decoration. There was a keurig coffee maker and a variety of pods, nice coffee mugs, wine glasses (which we needed), nice robes, big tv, and a HUGE bathroom. I mean really, space being what it is there it was so nice to have a enough room to set out all my hair stuff and have a full shower and bathtub. The location is just outside Union Square and a little bit Tenderloiny (if you have ever been here you know what i mean), but it was great to be in the heart of the city with the ability to walk pretty much anywhere you want to go. I would absolutely stay here again. A+ in my book. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Charming and Comfortable"
My room was San Francisco small, but very comfortable and clean. Enjoyed the artwork throughout the building and the cupcakes upon entering. Good service and a good value.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Room faced street. Very noisy late into night due to area bars, early morning traffic, etc (including early morning work w/ hydraulic equipment). Try to get room not facing front street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Union Square has more hotels per square whatever than anywhere else I've seen, so you've got options, but we highly recommend the Hotel California. It's under new management and feels very hip, friendly, and clean. Pineapple water in the lobby is a nice touch. Our 2-bedroom suite reminded me of a nice dorm room or a small NY apartment. Try for upper […] floors. It's true, you can hear bar sounds from the street on weekends, but you know what? It's happy and it's the kind of noise you only think is keeping you awake if you're already awake. Our 14-year-old slept right through it. I deduct a point for neighborhood because you're right next to the Tenderloin, where unfortunate people sleep and do other things on the sidewalk year round, but you're also near outstanding food. Try the Vietnamese sandwich place down the hill on Jones Street for lunch! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Poor for business"
Hotel smelled like a barn, had a single elevator, and was very loud because of outside street noise.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
...but beware that this is not a BW anymore. We booked when it was still owned by BW and used points. Upon arrival the manager told us he could not honor the points redemption. I called BW as I am a frequent traveler and BW called the hotel and fixed the issue. The purchase agreement with BW and Pineapple states that they must honor these bookings so […] if you encounter this issue, call BW and they will fix it. Staff was polite but I feel as if it was an attempt to make a bit more profit and that many who would be "stranded" would just accept their offer of a 25% discount and pay vs getting their free nights. Really enjoined the character of the hotel. They kept and restored the hotel which made you feel as if you are apart of history. The beds where super comfortableGenuine Expedia guest review
The room was VERY small with little room to walk around the bed. Although thankful for continental breakfast, it would have been nice to have a little more variety. Hotel staff was very helpful though.Genuine Expedia guest review
TV had bad speakers and had to be turned on by going to the set itself rather than the remote. We declined a room change since we did not plan on watching much TV. Next door was a bar/ restaurant which was loud until 2am Saturday night. There was a $39/day parking charge. If you want to be in a downtown hotel and can deal with the noise and extra expenses, […] then it is an ok hotel. Never again for us. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Lovely hotel and EXCELLENT service!"
My mom and I went on a girls' long weekend trip and we were impressed with this hotel, especially the outstanding service. The staff truly went above and beyond on our multiple odd requests. My mom dropped an earring down the sink and they immediately sent a plumber to retrieve it. They also gave us a free room upgrade because we didn't like the claustrophobic […] courtyard view of the first room! They also brought us a mini fridge, which was nice. The hotel itself is beautifully updated while maintaining its old charm. We enjoyed the free wine social nightly. Breakfast is adequate - cereals, breads, boiled eggs, juice, coffee - but we really missed having fruit and peanut butter. A couple negatives: any "standard" room is on the interior of the building and looks directly into other guests' rooms. Also, the hotel is definitely on the edge of seedsville. There are lots of sketchy people around. Be aware when walking alone at night. Overall, I will be back! Great hotel, excellent service, and fair price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel in an ok neighborhood"
The area is both saturated in homeless people and is a beautiful facility close to Union Square.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel close to Union Square."
Very nice staff and cute room. Free breakfast and free coffee & lemon water offered all day. I had one shot during the happy wine hour.:)Genuine Expedia guest review
"Close to Downtown Square"
For the price, it was a nice experience. They always warn you that if the noises of the "city night life" bother you, they offer ear plug. To me , it was soothing. Tickled by the offer of tequila although I did not consume. Breakfast was nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great, funky, eclectic boutique hotel"
Staff was wonderful. Clean room, comfortable bed. Rooms on the small side, but it is a vintage hotel so I didn't expect a modern sized room. My room location was quiet, except for a fire engine siren a couple of times, but that is typical in any city. Nice touches, like a decent free breakfast, lobby coffee & iced water with citrus, and wine/cheese […] in the afternoon. Walking distance from financial district, Nob Hill, etc. Valet parking was really handy and fast in/out service. I really liked this hotel and would stay here again without hesitation. "Room was very noisy - lots of street noise."
Thank goodness I was on EST and woke up at 3:00 on my own as the noise from the street was ridiculous and the windows are old and do not keep street noise out Fitness center leaves much to be desired On a positive note - front desk help very friendlyGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location with a quirky vintage feel"
We loved this place! The rooms were clean and beautiful with an early 20th century feel, and the free tequila shots with check in/complimentary wine and cheese happy hour added to the fun, quirky feel of staying here. The restaurant downstairs has great drinks and vegan food. The surrounding neighborhood is fairly loud and the hotel walls are definitely […] not soundproof, but we were there for a fun weekend and didn't mind. Just a few minutes to Union Square and lots of great restaurants. We would definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Small nice hotrl"
For 3 days it was perfect, the rooms are small but clean and the breakfast included is not enough but it is very well located and the staff is very kindGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice on a budget, loud neighbors, many bums"
The place was nice, decent room with heating and air. Room was clean, only thing that bothered me were the screaming hooligans outside of the building (some were inside too) and all of the homeless people outside. I wouldn't go outside along at night in this part of town, the bums are very aggressive.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The picture you are looking at it from expedia could be deceiving. Rooms is very small no matter which room you get. We had De Luxe and a Sun room during our stay but both were incredibly small. Not even a enough room to open your carrier. Don't valet your car. Park at the garage right next to the hotel. If you do valet, it's more expensive and they […] take 30 minutes to get your car out. Staffs were nice, but not all. when I asked about my car status to front desk person since valet wasn't here after 30 minutes, he replied back to me saying "open your eyes and look at the traffic. also it's not managed by us." Ok than why do you have valet sign front of the hotel? Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I booked this hotel because it says that it has airport shuttle and nice complimentary breakfast in the website. But either was true. The breakfast did not include everything that was listed in the web, and has only very basic things. The room was very small and the bed was very uncomfortable. I can hear loud squeaky sound whenever I move around on […] the bed. the hallway was very narrow and I can barely move my luggage through. The elevator was small and did not operate one time, so I have to run staircases with my bags. Bad experience. It was especially disappointing because many things on website were simply not true. The hotel was alright, though very expensive for the quality of service. Our room wasn't serviced even after being out all day. There was additional service and parking that hiked up the rates even more. The breakfast wasn't spectacular but decent. The location was convenient, within walking distance of union square.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Tim and Catalina are awesome! So helpful and made for a great experienceGenuine Hotels.com guest review
For the price and everything included in with the hotel room it is well worth it. I would definitely stay there again. Only downsides are that the rooms are fairly outdated. The elevator is an antique. Also there is a decent amount of noise from people outside at nightGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I enjoyed the customer service and the free wine and cheese each day. It is a great place for the value. Safe area too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
When we checked in, we were assigned two rooms that had not been cleaned. Our third room was clean. The room itself was fine. There is no A/C but there was a fan. The elevator is a joke. Only holds 4 people so we constantly took the stairs and we were on the 7th floor. The price for parking is misquoted on Expedia. It was listed at $31 a night, but […] it was actually $35 a night plus tax for $40 total. Still less than other hotels, but frustrating it wasn't accurate and they didn't seem to car. Response by The Hotel California - A Piece of Pineapple Hospitality Hi Catherine, I am very sorry for the logistical error that had you checked into a dirty room and also for the outdated parking info. Please believe me when I tell you that your honest feedback is extremely valued and we have updated our parking rates and addressed these logistical issues because of it. Thank you for taking the time, Kyle M. Guest Services Manager
"Great Hotel and Staff"
We had a great stay. The location of the hotel was right down the street from Union Square and the cable cars, so getting around was easy. Beds were very comfortable and the decor and style of the rooms are kept to their Victorian style era.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was nice, elevator was helllla slow. Dude at the front desk appeared to be stoned. Room was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was vintage and very clean as well. It was very ghetto in the neighborhood...it's the tenderloin and to be expected. But it's just sad to see crack deals and people urinating on the streets when you exit the hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We were warmly welcomed by Tim & he was extremely helpful. We had a fantastic time & easily walked to all of our destinations (Great American music Hall, food, & great drinks).Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect little hotel!"
The exterior of this hotel fits in with the rest of Geary...old and San Francisco-y (if that were an actual word to describe things). It's definitely a little dated in the lobby area/stairwells/elevator...BUT it's what gives Hotel California character. It works here. Our room was quaint and very clean. The bed was clean and fresh and SOOO comfortable. […] When we needed fresh towels, we just called and they were at our door within 5 minutes. The staff was very sweet and welcoming. Breakfast which is included in your stay was basic but did the trick. Location was perfection. Walking distance from every direction. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to others! Loved our stay here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed this hotel. The building itself is older and didn't stand out to me as a high class establishment at first sight. However, immediately at check-in I was greeted by the very friendly staff and a shot of tequila. The elevator is old, slow, and only holds 4 people at a time but it wasn't a big issue for me. […] The room was very clean and comfortable with a nice big TV and a solid internet connection. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and had everything I could have wanted (bagels, deli meats, cheeses, waffles, soy and dairy milk, cereal, yogurt, toast, and apple and orange juice) as well as a nice atmosphere. The hotel location was slightly unsettling but at least it was a short walk to union square. In the end, this place will be at the top of my list next time I go to book a hotel in SF. "Hotel California Nov 2013"
There are things about the Hotel California I very much enjoyed and things that were terrible. Most important to me was the noise. The hotel is in a very noisy part of the city. There would consistently be people outside drunk and screaming until at least 2am. The hotel is aware of this and offers complimentary ear plugs. They don't help much. Expect […] to stay up late or sacrifice your sleep. Second, the hotel itself is old. Our room was nicely appointed but very small. The elevator is an "antique" and can only fit four guests when it is working; it did not work for two of our six days at the hotel. You will either wait a long time or be climbing many stairs if your room is on an upper floor. The front desk staff, especially Tim, were very good. Though busy with the holiday they were always welcoming and available. The valet service for cars on the other hand is awful. 30 minutes to bring the car around seems to be the stock response every day. Some days was less than that, one day took 45 minutes. You will pay almost $40 a day for the privilege of waiting to see your car. It is a poor service. My wife and I took this trip with our dog. If you are traveling with your dog, your options are limited and the Hotel California is not a poor choice. If you do not have a pet with you, there are much better options elsewhere in the city. 3/5 stars overall for being acceptable. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"good hotel at affordable price"
I enjoyed staying at the Best Western. THe bed was great, the room clean. Free Wi-fi, wine and cheese party and free breakfast were a plus in a town with expensive hotels in that area.I will definitely go back there on our next trip!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel with Character Close to Union Square"
The room was clean. The bed was very comfortable. The free Tequila shot at check in is cute, but it is very cheap Tequila...beware. The hotel staff were very friendly and the breakfast was ok. It would have been nice to have a meat (bacon, sausage), potato, and eggs. About parking...the website does not mention that there is overnight parking right […] next door for $25 for regular cars and $10 more for oversized vehicles which is cheaper than the nearby lots and the "valet" of $46 disclosed on the website. Overaul, I would definitely stay again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Charming hotel in great location"
Myself and my husband stayed in the hotel for 5 nights in the end of September. We really liked the hotel and I have to compliment the reception staff - they were absolutely fantastic, couldn't have been more friendly, helpful and welcoming. The hotel itself has a lot of character and charm. Rooms are rather on a small side, but that's what you can […] expect from the hotels in the heart of San Francisco, but it was still big enough to be comfortable. Both the room and bathroom were very clean. I have read some guests reviews complaining about noise levels at night but I really don't know what the fuss was about! There is a late bar next door but it is only open on Fri and Sat nights and the noise dies down at about 2.30am. The "noise" is just people talking, no music, so really not a problem. The breakfast was quite good for a continental breakfast - bagels, pastries, eggs, cheese, ham, yoghurts, cereals - something for everyone. The location of the hotel is very good, couple of minutes walk from Union Square and with a lot of restaurants and a few bars steps away. Considering the location and standard of accommodation we though the hotel was an excellent value for money. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, would definitely recommend the hotel and would definitely stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Disappointed in SF"
The Hotel California is near the heart of SF - that's about all it has going for it. The hotel is well maintained and clean, but that staff is pushy (spending more time trying to sell tours than caring for guests), clueless, and as far as the receptionists go, down right rude. The restaurant is Vegan (which is not a major problem) but does not appear […] to have a deal with hotel, so getting in for dinner is almost impossible (even if you're a guest). The breakfast was included, but the food was only fair and running out by 8am. A hotel guest does not expect to go down to breakfast and find no coffee, no juice, no bread....... Oh, and the elevator was broken. No one apparently knew what to do or who to call. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Every staff member was pleasant especially Kyle and Tim. Everytime we had a question for how to get somewhere they knew the easiest way to get there. Breakfast was average. No ice machines. "Not very happy"
We were very disappointed, the location was good but the room was TINY and VERY HOT. We asked for a crib, they brought a very dirty pack n play. We ended up leaving in the middle of the night, having paid $50 for parking because the room was so hot we couldn't sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Location around the hotel itself is fine but, it is pretty close to the Tenderloin district which is not even remotely safe. If you map out your course before hand or take a taxi you will be just fine. The Vegan restaruant attached to the hotel is very good. If you have never tried vegan food you should try this restaurant. You won't be dissapointed. […] We also found a very good Thai place about a block behind the hotel. We also found the people of San Fran to be very friendly. I was amazed at how many offered to help when we looked lost. I was really impressed. I may be from MN, but people here are not very helpful when it comes to helping others who look lost. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"San Fran noisy hotel"
With parking, this hotel with tax was $400 a night. We had a family suite but there was no sitting area. Very cramped. The noise level was the worst part. The hotel is very old and there is no insulation from the city noise at nite. On the Saturday nite it was loud until 2:30 am. The minute you step in the hotel you smell a unpleasant odor similar to […] a grandmother's old, neglected house. The breakfast was poor. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Totally fine place to stay!"
We would stay here again (grad student budget and sensibilities), but could see how this place isn't for everyone. Pretty standard Best Western hotel experience, but an older (though pretty) building with some street noise (we were fine and slept well on the fifth floor, but heard that other visitors did not like being closer to the street). Location […] was fine for us because it was within a few blocks walk (if we traveled east and then south) of transportation stops and some good restaurants, but it was also a few blocks walk (if we traveled south then east) of some very rough blocks. Although we felt very tense when we accidentally walked through the rougher part once, we felt safe enough the rest of our trip. The homeless and panhandling population did not seem to be violent anywhere we went, including our neighborhood and the touristy area nearby. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Great old building with plenty of character. Room was on the 2nd floor facing a back alley and was noisy until about 11:00 p.m. Ask for a room at a higher level. "Good service, old noisy building"
The staff was very accommodating. The wine and cheese party every evening is a nice touch. However, this an old building. The street noise was very loud which made it very difficult to get a good nights sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great location. I could not really see the sky from the windows in our room. They faced another building. Hotel for adults. My 9 year old kept asking where they other children were.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Low Price Consideration"
The hotel came in at a low price for the "UNION SQUARE" area. Yes its on Geary St, but its about 4 blocks away from it. 4 blocks right into the heart of sketchyville! I know there's homeless people littering every street in SF but there were too many crackheads roaming around the corner this was on. That coupled with the facts that there is no AC so […] you have to have your windows open for any airflow at night, means you hear them shouting and doing whatever else they do at 3 in the morning. The room itself was small but nicely done. The restaurant in the building seemed to have good reviews, it was vegan. I'm not one, but am not opposed to eating it....so I picked up a menu and got snapped at by the host saying "YOU KNOW WERE VEEEEEGAN RIGHT?!" I said yeah, and continued looking. Get of your horse! Bottom line, if you're pinching pennies stay here, next time I'll cough up the extra money for a better location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Non of the employes told us true about parking.
