Good Location, friendly staff. Place has some old charm, but my shower was touchy, and the AC in my room did'nt work. Got stuck in the elevator once, and the last night I was there some dipstick pulled the fire alarm and scared all the Tourons! Good Times!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great rooms, service, location."
Excellent service, very nice staff. Great location. Comfy bed and pillows. Nice hotel. Only complaint is there is some kind of restaurant/night lounge next door and at night it got very loud from our room. It didn't really bother us though, we fell fast asleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great historic hotel"
My husband and I enjoyed our stay. It met all our expectations; continential breakfast and WI-FI. The room was comfortable and spacious for both of us. We are used to vactioning in historic hotels and expect that the rooms will be small and without air conditioning. The weather is mild enough that opening the windows or having the ceiling fan on made […] the room plenty comfortable. I read the reviews about the street noise and thought it might be an over exaggeration, but that was not the case. The hotel does offer complimentary ear plugs and in all honesty we got used it to it as best we could. Most of the staff members were friendly and helpful. So all and all I would recommend this hotel for the amenties and price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Pictures of the hotel looks better than what it is"
We first got to the hotel there were hairs in the shower and sink. The water pressure was weak. The fire alarm went off twice in 2 days. The hotel is old and smells. The sheets were itchy, I had to request new ones. Valet takes forever because they park streets away and is very expensive. We checked out and went to the Westin St. Francis and loved […] it! "it was close to all so not walking long."
In the bathroom, the sink faucet nozzle sprayed out water everywhere. It got our clothes wet, the toilet set wet and floor. The nozzle needs to be taken off and either clean or replace with a new one. Everything else was good. We would stay there again when coming to SF.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"great price and location. a little noisy at night"
Great hotel if you don't mind the noise of the party crowdGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location & great staff"
The staff was great... the location was perfect. Could walk to lots of places and cabs were easy to get. My bed and pillows were so comfy. My home away from home for the week. I'd stay there again. They had wine and cheese in the evening and a work-out room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"I'd stay again"
Clean hotel, central location. Rooms were small, but that's usual for old city hotel. It was noisy unless the windows were closed, but they did have ceiling fans. Bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was good size. Wine and cheese in the evening was nice after a day of sightseeing.Genuine Expedia guest review
nice place but a bit noisy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was great that we could check in early - the hotel was ok but the area was not the best. No AC in the room. Overall good exerience.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"THE HOTEL ATMOSPHERE"

"1 year wedding anniversary"
We had a great stay! Its a great location being close to everything we wanted to see. Its a 5 block walk from the Bart and metro Powell St. stop. My wife was in heels for our dinner reservations, so we took a $10 cab ride to fisherman's wharf, roughly 2 miles away. The hotel is also within 3 blocks of several theatres to see a show. My wife and I stay […] in hotels roughly 15 nights per month working in the travel industry and have never run into a hotel that serves tequila shots at check-in. The staff at check in was very friendly and helpful going so far as to actually hail a cab down in the street for us. They also let us check in at 12:30, even though policy says 3pm. They also have a later check out then most hotels at 12. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Highly Recommend this Hotel"
We were very pleased with our experience at this hotel. The staff was always friendly (from the front desk agents to the maid staff) and ready to give us directions and suggestions when needed. The complimentary continental breakfast was great. There was a much larger selection of food than we had expected. It is an older hotel, however, it looks like […] it has been recently renovated. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Overall, a great value in a good location. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"eh, ok for a couple nights"
Ok for the price. Small rooms but cutely decorated. However walls are paper thin and you can hear a lot in the hall and outside. Breakfast is good but hotel does not offer many extras.Genuine Expedia guest review
"great value for location"
Small rooms, as expected in a city-center hotel. Staff very friendly. But the real value is in the location--just a few blocks from Market St., busses, BART, cable cars, etc. Chinatown is walkable. Excellent choice if you're a tourist, or meeting in one of the nearby convention hotels.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Best Western San Francisco"
Hotel smells old and dusty. Rooms were clean and for the most part odor free. Rooms were very small. Luckly it was just myself. The room would have been too small for more than one person.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Ok hotel not sure I would stay again"
Good Location but little water pressure in the shower reminded me of camping in a RV.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Ok for the money"
the hotel is a typical small boutique hotel. the furnishings are worn. The bedding was fairly good The flooring was relativily new. the bath was medium quality. the room was clean the staff was suburb!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Business traveler viewpoints"
Fortunately I can sleep through anything as the conversations from the bar next door wafted into my room loud and clear (word for word), until 1am or later. Also, there didn't appear to be air conditioning so this hotel might be uncomfortable in warm weather.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced, old, dirty"
This hotel is a full two city blocks from Union Square. I have stayed at several hotels closer to Union Square that were much nicer and cleaner and that cost less. This hotel is overpriced. The rooms are old and stained. The guest services were poor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It's true, you're offered a free chilled shot of tequila at check-in! The desk employee was very friendly and check in was very smooth. The room, like you would expect in a city, is smallish. For two people, a queen room is fine. Flat screen wall-mounted tv is nice. Bathroom is nice but water pressure was very, very low. I'd definitely stay here again […] if I'm on a budget! When I check into a hotel and they give me a chilled shot of tequila at check in, I say Hallelujah!!! Then free wine and cheese at 5:00 in the mezzinine, free delicious breakfast in the restaraunt, and the valet parking is $20 cheaper than everywhere else in town, loved it!!! The staff was courteous, and it had a cool hippy vibe with great artwork. Not […] for people who like huge ultra modern beige Hiton-like structures. Right in Union Square area. Thank you LLoyd and Samuel. Also reasonably priced!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
You list free parking on your site (Hotels.com) and it isn't true. I complained at the front desk and they tell me they have been asking you to remove that for months. Get you act together. 3 days parking = $100.00Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value 3 blocks from Union Square"
Clean and comfortable small rooms. Good value. Wireless, wine & cheese @ 5 pm, continental breakfast included.Genuine Expedia guest review
I have stayed here many times and enjoy the layout, location, and the 4 star people that run it. The one thing to watch out for is that it is right on Geary street so don't expect a quite nights sleep!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I found everyone to be genuinely friendly and concerned about making my stay comfortable. The room was extremely pleasant and well appointed. I especially liked the custom, creative paintings on the ceiling and wall, very nice touch! I feel for the price it is an excellent choice. There were nice touches to creat a bit of community, like a shot of tequilla […] upon arrival and wine and cheese in the mezzanine in the evening. The breakfast was a bit dissappointing though. Only carbs and underripe fruit and coffee was cold. With an egg choice and decent coffee this place would be five stars. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"good location if you don't have a car"
Rooms are very small, breakfast not that veraity, NO parking for the hotel guests. However, they do have valet parking but for $32 a night! I had to use next door parking for $25 a night. Which means will be added to my room daily rate budget.Genuine Expedia guest review
"great location, good service"
Two bedroom suite was perfect for four of us but would not have worked if the five people booked in that room had all come! Clean, with friendly people, typical mediocre free breakfast but lots of places nearby to find outstanding meals.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good hotel for a short stay"
The receptionists were friendly. The breakfast was not bad (the usual American hotels' breakfast). What I didn't like about this hotel was the size of the room which was too small. Also, the room didn't have a carpet or rug so remember to take a flip-flop or something with you.The best thing about this hotel is its location which is near Union Square […] and the cable cars can take you to any nearby attraction spots like the pier, Lombard St..... You will be annoyed by the too many homeless people in this area who ask for money or just screaming in the streets. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The hotel was quite nice, stafff friendly, rooms modern and spotless, small but great for one person. Bed very comfortable. All amenities. A litte far from Bart but an easy walk. Close to Union Square and shopping. Great restaurants within a block or so. My only compliaint would be the number of panhandlers in the neighborhood. I have found that all […] over SF. "Mediocre Hotel for a good Price"
Negatives: We stayed at this hotel in the family suite. It was nice to have two separate rooms, but it was definitely not very spacious. The two rooms were quite small, quite cramped, and not terribly attractive. There are dents and divots all over the walls and all over the trim (or "molding). To be sure, it was quite clean, but not real appealing […] if you are expecting an aesthetically pleasing experience. Also, this hotel is in a very noisy area. It is right near a restaurant/bar that is open until about 2 a.m., and is very, very, loud. In fact, at the hotel front desk there is a sign warning you about this and letting guests know that "complementary ear plugs" are available upon request. A word needs to also be said about the elevator. A sign next to it says, "This elevator is an antique and can only hold 4 people." This was not very reassuring, but we used it nonetheless. It is also quite slow. It moves at the speed of an antique. Unfortunately, it is the only elevator available. The continental breakfast: it comes from a vegetarian restaurant. So, do not expect eggs, sausage, or bacon. It is pretty much all carbs. Positives: The staff is extraordinary. They will bend over backwards to make you happy. They are superb in their dedication, knowledge, and friendliness. Outstanding! The bed was incredibly comfortable. It didn't make up for the chaotic noise level. But it sure was nice. I slept great . . . with the use of some ear plugs. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The firstthing that you notice is the very musty and old smell of the hotel. The staff said "well, the hotel is over 100 years old. The room was like a closet. No table, one chair, old towels that had seen better days. Breakfast buffet was good. Concierge service was excellent in setting up tours and bus service. Location was central to sights, TV set […] onmly had very limited selection of channels, beds were comfrotable although mattress sagged terribley towards center. I would not stay there again especially since their rates werenot inexpensive as compared to more modern hotels in the area. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel California-quaint and comfortable"
Near Union Square, we loved the location. It was an easy walk to great shopping and restaurants. The room was adorable. There was a very nice breakfast in the morning as well. It felt like old-time San Francisco. We had a great time.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Everything about this hotel was excellent for the price...location, cleanliness, continental breakfast, employees' attitude. The elevator was out of order for most of my 2-night stay, which could have been a problem for people who aren't able climb stairs. I would hope that it would be permanently fixed or replaced before too long.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"hotel california---san francisco"
staff was wonderful--room adequate---location was convenient but if you are a light sleeper, there were clubs right on the street below and were jumping until the wee hours, so sleep can be compromised..there are many hotels in the same area that may be a little less noisey.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Ask for a room with natural light, because tou can get one with the view of the neighbor drinking and watching tv.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Decent older hotel. Room was very small, but clean and well maintained. I don't stay here often, maybe it's typical for the area but it seemed way small to me for the price. Also none of the rooms have air conditioning. I was told it was because they don't need it but it was pretty hot when I was there and really could have used it to sleep better. […] Rooms do have ceiling fans though. There are windows to open but for security they only open about 4 inches which means not much air flow. Decent and well kept overall and there was a good breakfast. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but no air conditioner"
Hotel was great but didn't notice that there was no air conditioner when I booked this hotel. We had to leave the window open all the time to keep the room cool which meant the street noise was pretty loud at night. I guess being from the south you take air conditioners for granted. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great deal near union square"
A great hotel with many extras. Great breakfast every morning as well as a manager's wine reception every evening. Friendly staff and just a 5 minute walk from union square.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old Classic with unique touches"
They told us that after we got the car in the garage and the bags in the room we should return to the check-in for our complementary shot of Tequila. There was wine and cheese at 4 and complementary breakfast. The rooms have sayings on the wall and a "mural" around the ceiling fan. It is 2 1/2 blocks from Union Square. Don't walk straight ahead into […] the Tenderloin. There is an outdoor club that was noisey at night. Service was friendly and very helpful and the location was outstanding. "Not a nice hotel"
The hotel is very old and there is no air conditioning. There is a bar across the street that is very noisy until 2AM. Also valet service for hotel lost my car for several hours and initially tried to state that I checked in without a vehicle. Horrible stay do not stay here.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel California SF = TOO Noisy !!!"
Great atmosphere. Terrific staff. Really terrific staff. but nothing can make up for the street noise, bar noise, and hall noise when you need a good nights sleep. Small room, Nice effort at preservation. Ceiling fan rattled. Free welcome tequila made up for their well-noted, slug-like elevator. It;s just the noise that drove me to sleeping pillsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
