"Worth it for the location alone..."
I booked this hotel based on the location and reviews. I was traveling alone and visiting friends so I wanted something close to Union Square so I could shop and get around easily when I was on my own. The hotel was super helpful with an early arrival and the room was perfect. Bigger than I would have expected for a boutique hotel in an old building. […] Cute decor and ambiance, only wish the halls were more well-lit. Great amenities and very comfortable... Watch out for the bed frames though, ouch! Concierge was very helpful as well and the use of the business center was super helpful as well. I would definitely recommend this property!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Would stay again"
Great location. Off off powell and ellis. Right in the heart of union square. The cable cars statt here. The metro is across the street. Market street is a block or two. All access. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Rooms are small but comfortable. We faced Powell street and thought it would be noisy but surprised it wasnt. We have stayed at many […] of yhe hotels in ssn Francisco and we give this one a 4 out of 5. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel for a tourist."
What this hotel lacks in ammenities (pool, in-room fridges, frills of a higher-end hotel) it more than makes up for in location. If you want to get out and see San Francisco, this is the place to be. It is located right on a stop for the famous Cable Car lines, just a block away from a major MUNI bus stop to take you anywhere in the city, and a block […] away from the BART hub which takes you to the airport. The room itself is quite comfortable. We stayed in a deluxe king room and it had more than enough room for us to spread out our things and still move around quite easily. I suspect we may have been given an ADA compliant room, because the bathroom was ENORMOUS. You could have easily fit a cot in there and slept another person! Whenever we make it back to San Fran, we will look for this hotel again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The room was comfortable but extra small. The room was a lttle dusty. Customer service is excellent. Location is ideal!! Very vintage and had a great stay overall.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Photos are deceiving"
I must say that the photographs are VERY deceiving! Our room (and other rooms that I viewed) looked much larger, cleaner and more modern than what I found when I opened the door to the room. This hotel is OLD and it felt more like a dreary, dark bed and breakfast than the "Art Deco boutique hotel" as it was described by Expedia. The "wine reception" […] is plastic cups and an old bottle of cheesy wine. BRING EAR PLUGS! It is so incredibly loud at night with the trolley, honking horns and noise of the city. Of course, it is close to the trolley turn around which brings loud crowds and it is close to a lot of things, I will give it that, but this hotel is NOT what I expected and what I paid for. The hotel staff was super friendly and helpful everything else stunk. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice hotel right in the heart of everything"
Very nice hotel and well maintained, the rooms are pretty small but you shouldn't expect much bigger since its the city. Overall very nice hotel an luckily we didn't get any complaints of our loud 1 year old who was too excited to be some where different other than home.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Not the best for the business traveler"
No desk and poor lighting in the room made it difficult to read, or use a laptop, comfortably. Also, the closet rack was in the bathroom, which was both odd and inconvenient. The pillows were too soft and the bed too hard; the combination made my head and back ache.Genuine Expedia guest review

Great location. The best thing about this hotel is Tom, the consigliere. He was a wealth of infomation and helped us out tremendously. Pretty good hotel, clean and neat and fun style. Great location for walking most everywhere. Nice personable people to help out, other than no one at the desk when we tried to check in around midnight, apparently fixing something on the 3rd floor. "Lovely stay at Hotel Union Square"
I just returned from a five night stay at Hotel Union Square. It is spotlessly clean and amazingly well located. It is half a block from the turnaround for the cable cars, it is two blocks from a BART station and two blocks from a cab stand. Union Square is a major shopping district with Old Navy, Tiffanys, Macys right there and a mall close. Because […] of all the public transportation near, it is easy to get to all the other parts of the city that you want to visit. There is no restaurant inside the hotel, but there are multiple dining options nearby. No breakfast either, but there is a great diner right next door. Try the sourdough french toast, it's wonderful. The hotel hosts a nightly wine reception from 5pm to 6pm. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We asked for and received a king-size bed. The actual room was very small, barely large enough to accommodate the large bed, a small nightstand, a single chair, and a very small table with a coffee maker on it -- quite different in size and spaciousness from what the website shows. Moreover, the floor perceptibly sagged when one walked across it from […] the side of the bed. The bed itself had only a mattress -- no box spring -- so it was very low and a bit difficult for us older folks to get in and out of -- again, quite unlike what was pictured in the website. Plusses are the wine reception every afternoon from 5:00 - 6:00. It would have been better had they been scheduled from 5:30 - 6:30 or 6:00 - 7:00 because most people don't go to dinner at 6:00 pm. ""Boutique" for a reason"
We stayed in the Queen room. It was a platform frame and THANK GOD, they put foam insulation on the corner bed. While this room had a window, the view was of the other window across from an interior corridor which housed the hotel's HVAC system for the hallways and the main lobby. We were on the fifth floor. The higher the less noisy. The room was no […] larger than 14 by 14 feet. Nice 10-foot ceiling with a art-deco to modern feel. Remember this is an old hotel from the early 1900's so the floors squeak a little. There was one walk-in-type closet with no lighting. Oh, bring hangers because this room only included two or three. There is no dresser for your clothes so be prepared to live out of the suitcase. The bathroom was updated and very adequate. But don't try to sneak a bathroom break in the middle of the night without waking up your partner. The wooden door squeaks to wake the dead! Wonderful time and wonderful concierge staff. Ask for Jewel. He really has some great suggestions for whatever your interest! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
People working here were really nice. I was in room that unfortunately had no air conditioning during a time when it happened to be hot in SF. My view was the fire escape and a wall. Didn't feel comfortable opening window since when I looked out there was some guy with no shirt, smoking his cigarette, looking into my room at times (turns out he had […] room next door), so I kept window locked and blinds closed. Also one of the nights, was woken up at 2 am due to banging noise against the door. Looked out to see 2 drunk idiots making out and crashing against the walls. Response by Hotel Union Square Dear Valued Guest, We here at Hotel Union Square would like to apologize for the lacking experience you retrieved while staying with us. In regards to the guest smoking, I would like to bring to attention that we are a smoke-free hotel and it is not allowed to smoke on the fire escape. It is very unfortunate that this was not brought to our attention, so that we could have informed the guest. It is also with regret that we learn that some of our guests can not apply common sense upon being intoxicated, although we as a hotel can only do our best to prevent incidents like this. I would see it as a personal favor if you would be so kind contact me next time you return to our lovely city and it would be my pleasure to see to it personally, that you retrieve the high level of hospitality Hotel Union Square has to offer. Warm regards, Adam Hovelmann

"Great location, no a/c and lots of noise on street"
Hotel Union Square is super cool: great furnishings, fantastic location, super nice staff. The complimentary coffee/tea in the morning and wine in the evening is great! The staff and service was great, however as per the hotel it was good but something's to note. The hotel it self is in an old building, if your a courtyard or Marriott person you may not like the apperiance. The room was a little small but I had room to do everything I needed(aka desk, closet). If more than a person is staying with you may feel cramped. "Convenience to restaurants and shops"
I wouldn't recommend a room with a view of Powell St unless you want the noise and action all the time. The first room I had was old although very clean. "If you are ok with a small room it is a great stay"
The room was small but we really liked the hotel. I took my teenage daughter to SF for her birthday. This was obviously an old building but it was very clean and well kept so we found the age of it charming. Most hotels are pretty much the same now. The location is great, near lots of restaurants, quick food, drugstores, and public transit just like […] what I want when I travel. There is a take-out window literally next door and a late night pizza take-out place less than a block away. Walking is safe. Remember when you walk SF, safety can change quickly in a couple of blocks and you want to avoid the Tenderloin (although it's right in the middle of everything and I always seem to pass into it). We had no car-it would have been more of a pain and expense than anything. No desk in room only nightstands-bathroom clean & nice(small). Staff was really exceptional, way better than average. Overview: only downside is size of room if it matters to you, I found it irrelevant. Price and location matter most as long as it's clean and this place is normal/fine not just acceptable. That is all the info I would have wanted. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location, very basic accommodations."
The hotel is very conveniently located. Powell St on the lower end near Market, so it is always busy and noisy with the cable cars running. It's old but has been nicely maintained. My only real complaint is the staff who tried to scam us into taking a town car to the airport by telling us repeatedly that it was too busy to get a cab (on a Monday afternoon, […] and not raining). Then they kept telling us the car would be there "in a minute". After about 20 minutes of watching cab after cab drive by, I bailed and found a cab in about 10 seconds. Pretty shady. "Fantastic location for a good price, but some BUTs"
PRO: The hotel is in a fantastic location; just can't be beaten. Right in the middle of everything. The price is competitive, we booked through Hotels.com and got a good price. The noise of the cable cars is commonly mentioned, we had a room to the back of the hotel so it was rather quiet (the view wasn't much though), but since we only slept at the […] hotel, it was OK for our needs. // CONS: First and foremost, the window could not be opened in our hotel room and the AC was very noisy and old. And the room sort of was dusty and had murky air since you couldn't let fresh air in. We got used to it after a while, but it sort of was unpleasant at first. Second, the bathroom door didn't shut properly as the frame or door moved over time; can't be done anything about it, just a sign of an old building structure. // FAZIT: Good price, great location, normal service with some drawbacks to accept. "Good location, but price too high for what you get"
location is good, and felt quite safe walking back to the hotel in the evening. The staff was kind and helpful, but I was disappointed with the general conditions and cleanliness of my room. First of all I asked for a room with a window: the window was there but blocked. The bathroom floor was completely uneven, as well as the carpet in the room. At […] night the room was way too hot, unless you turned the noisy a/c on and not being able to open the window made it a bit stuffy. Bed sheets and towels were not the cleanest and the best either (several stains on the towels, and the bed sheet only covered 3/4 of the bed, legs and feet were directly on the mattress!). The bathroom was not very clean when we arrived, nor was the room's floor. I feel that we paid too much for what we got: they should def improve cleanliness, room's conditions (windows, furniture, carpet) or at least make up with something else (e.g. breakfast included). Also, the cleaning staff was knocking on the door at 9am even when there was the "do not disturb" sign on the door...this last is not a major issue for me, but people on holiday might want to sleep a bit longer! :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
