"Best location ever"
Attended Raiders-Broncos game using Powell Bart station 1/2 block from the hotel to the Oakland Coleasum then back to the city in 20 minutes. Our room was in the rear of the building which was real quiet, very clean & staff very friendly. We would definitely stay again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Very attentive staff, excellent location, nice clean and comfortable. Beautiful lobby. Room not large but very comfortable. "Room was small, but ok for a one-night stay"
We reserved a deluxe double, and we found the room and the restroom surprisingly small.Genuine Expedia guest review
Check in at 3 staff very friendly and helpful. First room was too small so I call front desk if there was another room available my window was facing another room and i can see what my neighbor was doing not so cool. Plus I felt so stuffed up either the heater was on or i dont know. But i couldnt breath at all I even turn on the cooler but I called […] front desk and I couldn't do it. But they were very helpful and offer me a st side room that was a little bit bigger no upgarde or anything but the important part was i could breath in this room and im not looking into my neighbor room. Sad part was that the room was uneven. When i walk towards the window i was actually going up and then when i walk towards the restroom i was going down But thank god the bed was leve becuase i didnt roll to my side because i slept fine beside the city noise. beside the uneven floor the shower head was awesome and staff were friendly. btw room 606 try to stay away. lol I stay here before but never had this problem but first time booking with expedia so i really dont know what happen. It is true that we have very different room types and room sizes. We hope to have you back soon and give you the great stay you deserve. Best wishes.
Located right on the Powell trolley line is the best location for traveling to and from the wharf, Chinatown and Union Square. Great location, courteous staff. I would definitely stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I love what they did with the place! Really cool decor and right in the middle of all the action. Dog friendly too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, nice boutique hotel experience"
Nice room facing the street. Modern in style, very clean. A little smaller than the average business hotel, but plenty of room to move around. Staff was very nice, and I enjoyed the self serve wine at happy hour! I would stay here again in heartbeat. Very close to Moscone Center, but didn't have the crowds of a larger hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"WIll Stay Again"
This is my second time staying at this hotel and I love that its so convenient for everything. You walk out and all the shopping is in front of your face. I also like that just around the corner you can find a bar or club to have some fun. Starbucks right on the corner. Great boutique hotel right in a lovely neighborhood of SF. Close to shopping, trolley, great restaurants. Room was modern and very clean, and the staff was great. And they serve complimentary wine in the afternoon! What more could you ask for? :)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect for this trip - walk to Moscone"
I was in San Francisco for a convention at the Moscone Center. The location could NOT have been better with that in mind ... it was just a very short walk with no hills! Kitty-corner across the street is Starbucks, directly across the street is a Walgreens with fresh market. It's a very busy street, but that actually made me feel safer. The cable car […] is also just at the corner, and the trolley 1 1/2 blocks away, so in that sense, it's also convenient to many other neighborhoods. We like to sleep cold, so with the AC on, there was no street noise to be heard. And speaking of sleeping, the very best thing for me about the Hotel Union Square is the quality of the beds and pillows ... equal to what I have at home (and my back is very particular about this) for a great night's sleep every night. Yes, the rooms are small, but that was of no importance to us ... when we were in the room, we were either in bed or in the shower, both of which were really comfy. You could spend a lot more money in the Union Square or SoMa neighborhoods in order to get a larger room, but for us, it really wasn't necessary. We were very happy! Hotel staff not friendly in some cases. Cleaning people forgot to re-supply room with soap, etc.... Towels smelled and were coarse/old Noisy Difficult to get a cab due to location on busy narrow streetGenuine Expedia guest review
This is a nice hotel, but the rooms are quite small. That isn't an issue for me, because I spend little time in the room. The location cannot be beat, and the price is right. The wine reception in the lobby each afternoon is a bonus. Will definitely stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"You're paying for a great location."
Room was labeled something like "deluxe king suite room" which turned out to be mostly branding. The room was about 12 ft by 12 ft with a small bathroom attached. Almost not enough room to unfold the ironing board. Hotel was clean and decorated well. I also liked the free wine and music downstairs in the lobby around 5 PMs. That said, the room was not […] comfortable. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This hotel was great. The mix of the modern renovations with the historic architecture give this place a lot of character and comfort. As it's located right in the middle of downtown, it stays pretty noisy but there's plenty to do around you. PROS: great location and service. We had exec king room and it was great. Wonderful location near BArT. Hallway on 3rd floor was beautiful with artwork and exposed brick but it was dark, needs better lighting. Cons: remodeling lobby. View was of courtyard which was probably better than street view. City problem : homeless and panhandlersGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"City meeting and turism"
The hotel was nice. The staff friend and very well located. The concierge service helped a lot for asking information about routes, dinning, museums, etc. The only problem is that the room was very little, and only one side of the queen bed had night table. But the room next to us was bigger, a lot bigger. No view from the window. The closet was very […] big but without light, so is was uncomfortble looking for your things. The bathroom great. Great shampoo brands, good hairdryer, bathtub. And very clean. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel close to downtown"
I had a great experience with Hotel Union Square. I originally booked a room with one queen bed and a roll-a-way. When I called to confirm the roll-a-way bed, they offered to upgrade me to a room with two double beds, which is what I wanted anyway. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was clean and the decor of the hotel was cute.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Liked the hotel"
We were upgraded to an executive king which was a nice, spacious room. Only complaint was that there is no counter space in the bath. We had a inside room and despite the cable car line being just outside it was extremely quiet. Complementary wine hour each night was a plus.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fine but wouldn't come back"
Basically and average hotel. Extremely small bathroom and very loud location right next to cable car. Was pretty inexpensive and fine for a night but won't likely be back. 2 stars is enough for this hotel. Staff was nice but nothing really stood out.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hotel Union Square Dear Liz, Thank you for taking the time of writing a review, I am sorry that your stay did not meet to your expectations. Hotel Union Square is in the heart of San Francisco, it' s a very lively neighborhood which can be a little overwhelming at night when you are not used to it. We do have some rooms on the courtyard which are very quiet. We also do have a wide range of room types. I hope that you will consider giving us another chance next time you are in San Francisco. "Powell street is loud and bright all night long."
All in all the hole is a good value for the area. However, my room had no A/C so it was hot. I had a room facing Powell street so it was loud all night and I had to have the window open due to no AC. Uni Qlo store across the street is very bright all night long. Maintenance / sanitary workers through the night were also very loud. I suggest a room away […] from Powell street on the backside of the property. For what they describe as a Delux queen the rooms was small, I suppose that is a boutique hotel for you. Response by Hotel Union Square Hi Mark, Thank you for leaving a comment about your stay. I am sorry that everything wasn't up to your expectations. Street side rooms can be a little loud when not used to it but we do have rooms on the courtyard which are very quiet and we always try to accommodate our guest as best as we can if they are not happy with their room. We also have bigger rooms like the Executive Kings or the Junior suites. Maybe you should try one of those next time you are in San Francisco and you decide to stay with us again. Best regards,
"Not what I expected ;-("
I thought I found a good room for a good price. The minute I walked in the hotel I knew I wasn't going to like it, unfortunately. Hotel is dark, not kept up, example carpeting dirty and smells musty. Our room smelled like a small animals cage. The faucets in the bathroom were new and modern but again place wasn't clean, grout in shower was full of mildew. […] All I could think was that we were going to experience bed bugs, and thank goodness we didn't. I really wanted it to be nicer. The front desk lady gave us bad direction with the public transit, if you don't know than just say sorry I don't know how to get you there and I would accept it but would be disappointed. "This was not at all what our team expected."
This was very disappointing. To the point where one of our team members was so discussed he had to check out. If you plan on trying to charge us a cancellation fee after the way he was treated we will try to fight it. Another person was woken up by sanding at 2:30 am and then after he asked the staff to stop they started hammers. So disappointing.Genuine Expedia guest review
Location of the hotel was excellent, next to Union Square and next to the Bart station; very convenient to everything. The hotel was a small boutique hotel with excellent service by all of their staff. That being said; the room was exceptionally small and they placed us right next to the elevator. If you opened the room door, you could push the elevator […] call button without stepping out of the room. All night long and into the early morning, your could hear the elevator ring and people going in and out and hear their conversations as the walked in and out of the elevator and down the hallways. I heard a lot more than I ever wanted to about other people's lives the four nights I stayed at the hotel. I did not however, get much sleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Great staff, close to BART, interesting inner staircase with exposed brick. Not a luxury hotel but clean and convenient for the price. "In the heart of the city"
We enjoyed our stay, the hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had a single queen room which was on the small side. Next time I would get a larger room in order to have somewhere to sit other than the bed. We did have a single chair in the room, nothing more. However the location was wonderful. Right outside the door […] the city awaits. You never need to move your car, you can ride the cable cars or the muni anywhere you wish to go. We would definately stay at the Union Square Hotel again. "Good location. So-so hotel"
Hotel was in a great location, right on the line with the cable cars and easy walk around the city. Room was less than expected and average at best. Seemed like a dorm room in Ikea chic. No ironing board in my room. They did bring one. The other person traveling with me said his room had one of those small ironing boards. The hotel rooms and halls […] have an odd smell--not stinky, just different. They do have incense in the rooms which may be the cause of the lingering smell. Also may be an issue with people affected by the smell of incense. Bathroom was massive. Could have washed a Shetland pony in there (which may have happened in San Fran). But with all that room, no place to put your own stuff like cosmetics bag and tooth brushes. The room worked for a quick trip to the city, but for the price and compared to the competition (which I've stayed at) I'd opt to not go there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Decent hotel in the heart of Union Square"
The hotel is in a good location for shopping, dinning and transportation. The cable car turnaround is right around the corner and you can pick up the trolley by walking one block. There is no shortage on restaurants anywhere in San Francisco but definitely not in Union Square. The hotel was quaint and surrounded by history which was pretty cool. Our […] room was small. The bathroom door could not open all the way because the bed was in the way. It had a large closet but no dresser so we used our suitcases. There was a window air conditioner and the bathroom was a nice size but no where to put your bath articles except a glass shelf above the toilet. We would stay at The Hotel Union Square again because of the location and we would recommend it to our friends. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location and great price"
You really can't beat the location nor the price of the Hotel Union Square. Still, I can't recommend it because of the laziness of the housekeeping staff. Yes, my bed was made daily, but in all the hotels I've stayed in over the years I've never seen mold on a shower curtain until now. My used wash cloth and used drinking cup were never replaced. I […] purposely left the bathroom in disarray one day to see if they would even bother to tidy it up... nope. The concierge was great, as was the gal behind the reception desk, but there are so many other hotels around the area that I'm sure you could find a better one without trying too hard. "Nice hotel, best location"
The room was ok. The guy from the front door let me check in early (5am). That helped me a lot. There's a parking lot where you can leave your car. It's pretty expensive ($40 overnight). I would stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Excellent location for shopping, museums, trams and cable car. Room is extremely small and expensive. That's the compromise you made for the location. If you have to stay for more than 2 nights, please ask for the room at the back as it is a very noisy area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location! But dark and dingy"
This hotel was in a great location! We were close to shopping and could walk to Union Square. The trolley even went up and down the street! BUT the hotel was dark--like a scary fun house. I could tell they were going for "chic," but it was so dark that we couldn't see where to put the key card in the door to get in. And I gave up on trying to put on […] my makeup because it was so dark in the room. (By the way, I'm 34. I can see.) The room also seemed dingy. The sheets were pilled. The carpet in the room was ripped (in the middle of the floor). The mattress felt really springy and worn. The TV in the room didn't work. I've stayed in many boutique and old hotels. I like character. But this hotel just didn't feel comfortable. Even though the location was great, I wouldn't stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
