Unfortunately the street in front is under construction. The staff were super, the rooms were clean and well maintained. I would have given it all 5's but I HATE to pay for parking and the construction.

The hotel seemed to be run by college students. We had no hot water from the faucet and no working air conditioning. Maintenance men kept arriving day and night to no avail.

The recent renovations at The Commons left it a very sparkly, hip hotel in the heart of the University of Minnesota campus. The restaurant is pretty good too, but expensive. We stayed two nights while touring UM. Overall, we really liked the look of the hotel. We had a king room with a sofa bed for our 17 year old. (Though there was a lot of dust under that sofa bed!) We were right next to the elevators, which was noisy. And for some reason, we could hear conversations in the room next to us, which seemed odd. Our room […] was really small but otherwise comfortable. Until I got in the shower - no hot water! We had to suffer barely lukewarm showers, which was most unpleasant due to it being very cold despite the start of spring. The staff switched us to another room, which was even smaller and with no sofa bed for the teen so we had to switch again, a hassle, but third time was the charm and everyone was happy. We do plan to return if our son attends UM, and we hope that in the meantime the hotel improves noise and hot water issues. Read more

I travelled to Minneapolis on a business trip and stayed at the Commons based on Expedia reviews. Big mistake. First night no valet service (I'm traveling with equipment) and I had to carry everything up to my room myself. Person at front desk said they'd send someone to help me with my stuff, then apologizes, she didn't know where the valet people […] were, then says she'd send someone to pick up the luggage cart and no one came. Next morning I asked for my car to be ready from valet, when I got there it was covered in snow and it was snowing and I had to clear it myself, getting my feet cold and wet because it wasn't parked under the overhang. I worked 13 hours that day, came back, and again, no one working at the valet stand. Very frustrating, had to carry everything upstairs to my room. I complained to night clerk, he gave me one free night of valet, I didn't feel like complaining again. I didn't get the impression that these were unusual problems based on the comments from staff members a out how they were understaffed. For $170/night in Minneapolis I expect much, much more. Beds rock hard, service in the bar/restaurant horrible. The food was truly excellent once your order got in. Ran out of food at banquet and restaurant. Fixtures in bathroom sink not secure and plunger not working.

The most memorable thing about my stay was the room itself. Beautifully furnished and tastefully decorated, with small amenities not found in other hotels, such as a container full of cotton swabs and q-tips in the bathroom. Large windows let in plenty of natural light. There are even floor-to-ceiling windows in the hallways. Downstairs is a huge lobby […] with a fireplace and bookshelves. The hotel restaurant/bar is new and spacious, with a great menu. And a door adjoining the lobby opens to a full service Starbucks. All this on top of a great location in the heart of the U of M campus makes for a great travel experience! Read more

I was disappointed that I did not get an updated room like the ones on the upper floors. We still had a box TV in our room which is really bad. The construction noise was very bad in the morning. I'm sure this hotel will be beautiful once it's done being renovated, but I would stay away from it until the renovations are done. Unless you like outdated rooms, drilling sounds throughout the day, no work out room, and construction everywhere, you should wait.

We were not satisifed paying full price for the hotel when it was under construction. We were also not happy that we were not informed of the ongoing construction, and then also having to pay a fee for parking. It was very inconvenient with all the construction going on. ( No work out room etc. ) Had we been aware we would have allowed extra time to […] get around the construction to the hotel. Also Hotel vehichles were in the driveway blocking it when we tried to drive in to check in & find out where to park. We ended up going around again and had to park on the street. Upon checking in my husband & I thought that the hotel desk clerk was not very empathetic when we asked about the construction. She was very impersonal & indifferent. The room it self was fine, but not being able to use the lobby, work out area etc was a disappointment. We had been staying at another hotel because your place was usually full during the school events. So, this time we were able to get a room there & ended up being disappointed. Hotel and street in front of it were being torn apart. There was no usable lobby and front desk was a banquet table. Jack hammers & back hoes beeping from 8 am to 6 pm. Central air was almost worthless. Lucky it wasn't really hot outside. I think we should have been advised of the fact that the place was under renovation.

Hotel is undergoing a major renovation. Constant loud noise inside and out of the hotel. They are also constructing a light rail station right in the front of the hotel. The only good thing is location, if you have a business with UMN. The service is really poor. My guess is that the staff are actually the UMN students. I will stay somewhere else next time, if I can find any other closeby hotel to the campus.

The hotel was underconstruction so everything was dirty. The price was way to high for the current state of the hotel. The staff was friendly, so that was a plus. The air conditioning barely worked so my room stayed at around 80 F.

it was only a couple days for orientation at Minneasota U but I couldn't have been more pleased with the room and the friendliness of the front desk for all my questions or requests. The location was perfect.

The hotel staff was wonderful. We had a little problem with the A/C in the first room, so they moved us and comped us valet parking for the inconvenience. The select comfort beds didn't seem to work right -- a regular bed would have been more comfortable. The construction in the area made it difficult to get to and from the hotel.

Look, a reasonable, clean hotel, close to UM. But right now surrounded by construction. Behind the hotel a huge basketball area is being built, and in front of the hotel the road is closed and torn up for construction of light rail.
