This place reminds me more of a hostel than a hotel. The first room we got had multiple-legged insects in the drawers so they promptly moved us to another room. They were incredulous until I produced the live insects to the person in the front desk. The replacement room turned out to be equally dirty (counters were not wiped down, bathroom floor had dried urine around the bowl and on the floor) but I didn't want to move the family again so I requested some cleaning materials so I could clean the whole room myself. By now it was past midnight but I found one more thing: the sliding window's lock did not latch because the window itself was missing the frame where the lock would have latched on. So, the window did not lock and we were on the first floor. Normally, I wouldn't care about this lapse in security but when I travel with kids, I do not leave the "safety" of small town Alaska to chance. We were right next to an alley where the noisy bars were still lively and the side doors were not locked (I know because I tested them myself...I went for a walk around the building, exited the side door and entered through the door next to our room. None of these doors were locked and it was almost 1a.m by now). The front desk person who did not know how to solve the broken window lock and who didn't know where to get me a two-foot pole so I could put in on the sliding window called the maintenance person at my request. To their credit, it only took the maintenance guy fifteen minutes to show up with a towel bar that I used as temporary sliding window security for the next two nights. It was 1:20a.m. but he showed up and I was thankful for that. Aside from the dirty hotel rooms, the hotel's location is prime. But it is a temporary stop for anyone who just needs a place to sleep and way too expensive for what it provides. Walls are thin so you can hear everyone and if you're in room 118, you'll be right next to the giant trucks that back right up to your window at 7am. You'll p

The Westmark is an older and well-used facility in downtown Skagway - located 1 block off the main street and surprisingly quiet considering the hustle-bustle of the community (trains, buses, helicopters, etc.) Room is adequately appointed - only wish there had been a fridge in room. Everything is town is within walking distance.

Hotel carpet needs updating. It is worn and emits a strong oder of mildew. Windows needs to be sound proof. Garbage collection at 5 a.m. every morning is very disturbing.
