Westmark Baranof Hotel - Juneau

I have stayed at this hotel twice, it has strengths and weaknesses. It is old and has a lot of charm. The decor is beautiful, the location is awesome near resteraunt and shops. But the rooms are very small and the sound proffing is nonexistant. You here every flush, every door slam, and conversations.

The desk clerk did not even great us when checking in, just a deadpan look as I approached the desk. Unbelievable. Flat effect, flat voice, sad person is what went thru my mind.

The Westmark Baranof Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. It definitely caters to tour groups and what is lacking, intentionally, is transportation to the Airport or the Alaska Marine Highway. There is intentionality not providing transportation in order to cater to Princes etc. I hope that the towns on the tour route start to realize how much this hurts […] the tourist image and they all start to provide public transportation (the taxi industry is killing tourism in the area by their ability to get the towns to restrict public transportation to the ferry and airport). I had a great stay at the Baranof in Juneau. It was a great location and the room was very clean and comfortable. The only reason I gave the condition/maintenance of the hotel a 4 (and not a 5) is that I had trouble with the heat in the room. When I called the front desk they were very helpful and turned the heat on for the whole building so that I […] could have heat. The only thing was that they next day it was off again, but I didn't feel like calling to have them turn it on as it wasn't so bad, but it would have been nice to have the heat. This hotel is just OK and badly need some sprucing up. They have done some improvements in the rooms, but there is still a way to go. The Gold Dining room is simply depressing and the items on the menu are way overpriced. They do a better job with breakfast though.

Very old hotel/motel. My wife found half eaten jerky on the floor. Carpet needed to be cleaned and was very dirty. We stayed there because it was located downtown nearby some eateries we wanted to try. They also didn't have a shuttle to the airport, even though the hotel is located a few miles away? The location was great, and the staff was very nice. The hotel is in dire need of an update, and the cleaning could be better. The drawers were dirty and had to be cleaned before we put our clothing away. We enjoyed the hotel and our room. We were a little disappointed with the parking. The small lot behind the hotel was full. We were told we could park in the parking lot next to the hotel, but they did not tell us we had to move the car by 8:00am. So, we got a $25 parking ticket. "Deluxe" queen room was small, and next to a function space and the icemaker. Only two sets of towels were provided. The room entrance area was large, but unlit, so it was useless after dark. Had an adjoining room so the neighbor noise was a little loud at times. If you are staying here and your car rental company offers a free upgrade, decline! Parking is tight, streets are narrow and lots of one-ways. Signage is limited due to it being a historical district, so get clear directions.

Attended our high school reunion, so I am familiar with Juneau, and our first stop was at the bar, which was quite pleasant. Plenty of room, nice atmosphere. People at a corner table enjoying the Wifi service. I didn't have a chance to dine at this hotel, instead I dined at the many nearby restaurants like the El Sombreo, or the Hangar at the Wharf. […] If you come to Juneau, and know some locals, have them take you to the Sandbar out in the Mendenhall Valley for the best deep fried Halibut you will ever experience. The Sandbar is a little rough around the edges, (because it is a bar tucked away in an industrial area) but you will be glad you came for the halibut. The room at the Baranof was clean and comfortable but a little on the small side. But you have to understand that the Baranof was built a long time ago, and they have spent some money sprucing it up. I read comments about the Baranof prior to this visit of mine, and it just irks me to read the snarky assessments from folks who are visiting Juneau, or Alaska for the first time. What they don't seem to understand is, that this is ALASKA! Do you have any idea what it takes to keep even the brand spanking new hotels looking good and smelling fresh in this rainforest climate? You will never find a building here that looks like one in a sunny, warm climate. The Baranof is in a great location, has great service, good rates, and met my expectations. Nice location in downtown Juneau. Close to many things. Just a few blocks away there are are 3 local downtown bars that seem to cater to a rougher local crowd. Stay away from that part of downtown. Very noisy guests on my my floor all night.....also room over front entrance. Noise loud street......no attempt by management to quiet. Hallway partying slamming doors loud music . Earplugs didn't help. Very disappointed, very tired not relaxing stay. Might as well have stayed in a barroom.

The cleaning was poor, the parking was very limited and was not secure. We had luggage stolen from our locked vehicle. We turned in our complaint to the manager with no follow up. Our dinner reservations were not accurate and the stay with food was overpriced. The dinner was not served as requested.

If you are a light sleeper, don't stay here! You can hear every conversation in the hall and your neighbor's room. As an example, I woke up about 15 minutes before my neighbor's cell phone vibrated in the next room. Then I got to hear their entire conversation. The toilet was so noisy we did not flush it at night in order to not wake the others sleeping. the tub was very small and shallow. would have been better to have a shower only. I chose to stay at this facility unfortunately while it was undergoing remodeling. Some of the hallways on some of the floors were a mess. However, the hotel in general was decent. CONS: the construction (this is a temporary condition) parking is an uncovered area in back of the hotel with no rear entrance, requiring that you walk around the block to […] re-enter the hotel. the room that I stayed in was tiny. The heat went out the first night I was there, but they fixed it before the second night. PROS: The staff were extremely nice and courteous. The appointments in my room were very nice. ALL THINGS CONSIDERED: It is a nice place, slightly overpriced, but from the looks of it, they are in the process of remodeling to make it much better. The location is great, but that's about it. The staff was unfriendly and not willing to help, both at the reception and in the (dinner) restaurant. The Cafe where breakfast is available is however good, very friendly staff and the dishes are excellent. The room was very small, I could almost not walk between the bed and the TV/table. The hotel quite desperately needs a renovation - paint is falling off the walls, my window could not be opened without someone coming to fix it, flushing the toilet didn't work properly etc. Overall: I paid far too much for what I got. Arrived at Hotel about 9:00 a.m. to check our bags in. Two other Business men where ahead of us, as we waited we noticed that they were able to check into their rooms. She asked if we had reservations and I told her that we did under my name for a Non-smoking, King size bed. She said OK, then checked her list and told us that our room was not ready, […] to come back in two hours (about 11:00 a.m.). We checked our bags and said that we would return. When we return at 12:30 three and a half hours later was told our room was still not ready. I mentioned that my wife was not feeling well and if they had another room available. We were told "Not unless, we got a upgrade" then we could have a different room. I stated "You don't have another Non-smoking, King size bed room. She said only with a up grade. When I told her that I did't want to up grade she said that check in time was not until after 2:00 p.m. We did not return until after 5:30 p.m. just too make sure. Read more

I saw all the other reviews and in total, yes the Hotel is mediocre. But you are in Juneau and not in Manhatten. The standards are simply different. The rooms are small and the there is not much of luxury. But is is the best you can get and if you don't expect luxury you will have a pleasant stay. The staff is nice and forthcoming, the food is as good […] as anywhere else in Juneau and fits the same pricing category. Just be aware that Juneau simply doesn't offer great food or great lodging. Great Location in downtown, almost two blocks from the cruise ships, stores, tours stands, restaurants, museum. We had a great view of the Gastineau Channel from 7th floor. Not a five star hotel but really nice. We enjoyed our stay here.
