One of the best ways to get an invigorating workout is simply by exploring this hilly city on foot. Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, and other neighborhoods offer steep sidewalks and stairways, intriguing historic buildings, and stellar views. The colorful, raucous birds made famous in the movie The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill can sometimes be seen—and heard—in the trees along the Filbert Steps and the Greenwich Steps on the eastern face of Telegraph Hill. Other top choices for walking and running include the Embarcadero, Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. I don't understand why this hotel is so highly rated by so many people. I arrived at this hotel at 9pm doorman and valet was courteous and respectful. I got a room in 5th floor and it was a disaster. The toilet water kept running when flushed, their were two blood stains on the bed sheets, the corner of the shower room had a mossy-like stain. The cleric offered to change rooms but i denied. I was tired from my long travel and just wanted to sleep. I have stayed in many hotels but this is no better then a 3 star in my opinion. They have a nice business room but For the price I paid this hotel was not worth the money. Your better off staying at a place that is more reputable. Did I mention the business center was shut down. Stay else where.

Usually stay at the big name hotels in San Francisco area (Westin, W Hotel, St Regis) Found this hotel at the last minute for a quick trip during a convention, so rooms in the city were difficult to find. The location was great and it had a smaller more friendly atmosphere due to it's size. Will consider staying here again in future and other Taj Hotels as well!

Reviewed by Hans Peter of Copenhagen on Oct 21, 2009
I stayed at the Campton for a night in a suite with a separate bedroom. I did not find anything to complain about and was greeted with a personal note and fresh delicious fruit. As I understand, the suites of this type are located on 2nd to 9th floor, and I had the one on 2nd floor. This meant a less impressive view over Union Square and a street lamp literally within reach outside the bedroom window. Ask for a higher floor, if you're going for these suites. The fitness room has been recently updated with brand new fitness machines and equipment. It is located on 9th floor at an outdoor terrace with view over the city, though covered by a less charming canvas. The Union Square neighborhood lacks nothing. If you're into electronic music and night clubbing, there's a nice club called Vessel in the same street. I had the disfortune of having a phone number for the room, that somehow was on the internet sonehow, since I received a regular customer call twice.

As the first stop on a touring trip of California’s central coastal area, Campton Place on Stockton Street in San Francisco came with very high expectations, especially after we’d spent the best part of 24 hours travelling! Happily Campton Place lived up to its reputation and more, and during our four-night stay we can honestly report that the hotel did not put a foot wrong. The friendly, helpful staff are chatty and approachable without compromising their professionalism and the room was delightful – clean, stylish and well-equipped. Both the morning room servicing and the afternoon turn-down service were carried out promptly and the quality of materials used was top-notch. Campton Place can justifiably be proud of is its staff. From receptionists to housekeeping, concierges to doormen, without exception all were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and full of interesting information. In particular, chief concierge Leigh Anne Dolecki was a total star and arranged a great night out in a cabaret club for us, as well as arguably the holiday’s best meal. If concierges have their own Oscars/Emmies/Hall of Fame then Leigh Anne certainly deserves her award! Campton Place makes an ideal San Francisco base as its location means that most areas of Downtown, SoMa, the Tenderloin and parts of Russian and Nob Hills are all walkable – very handy for sightseeing, shopping and eating out.

We've stayed at other Union Square hotels and the Campton Place is by far our favorite. We pulled up to valet park our car and they kindly told us we could park with them or park 1/2 block away in a parking gargage which was 1/2 the price. The room was extremely nice and we had one of our best night's sleep in the comfy bed. We couldn't hear any of the noise around Union Square. The bathrobes are to die for! I was impressed to see a water bowl by the hotel entrance door for the dogs being walked, very cool. We'll be staying there again in December.

Was very excited about going to this hotel given the reputation the chain has, but it was not a good as I expected. On the downside, the hotel was nowhere near as luxurious as I expected, it actually seemed quite dated. The minibar had used bottles from the previous occupant when I arrived. The maid threw away half a bottle of wine that I hadn’t finished (given how expensive it was, I wasn’t impressed) and the minibar wasn’t replenished. On the plus side, the room was a very good size and the bed was comfortable. I was upgraded without requesting it which was nice (!). Small points, but the bathrobes were absolutely fabulous! The location is great too, pretty much on Union square, but away from all of the bustle. There is also a nice gym and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Room service was very quick, but the food wasn’t great and was very expensive for what it was. Not certain I’d stay there again, mainly because of the lack of luxury.

Campton Place is a beautiful hotel coveniently located in Union Square. The rooms are rather small, however the room's modern and elegant décor more than compensate for the size of the room. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Parking is quite expensive ($53+ per night), however if you ask they are more than happy to direct to a parking garage close by ( we opted to have the hotel park the car as it simply more convenient especially if you intend to use your car with any frequency). The Campton Place Cafe also has wonderful a breakfast. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Campton Place, it is well worth the price!

From my arrival at the hotel, with it's friendly doorman, to my checkout, where change was handed to me on a silver tray, my stay at the Campton Place hotel exceeded my expectations. The Moulton Brown soaps and shower gels are the very best, and the bathrobe was the most comfortable I have ever worn. Although on a busy street, my room was very quiet with almost silent heating and air conditioning. The bed was very comfortable, and the bath linens were of the highest quality. This hotel is smaller, with personalized service, but has full services such as 24 hour room service and a concierge. I often drive the hour up to San Francisco from San Jose for weekend getaways, and I can't wait to stay at the Taj Campton Place hotel again.

I was under the impression that Taj was a luxury hotel chain and was expecting a experience closer to Ritz/Four Seasons/Fairmont, rather than a motel. Staff was very friendly, and room service was the best I have had in a long time.

We stayed here on New Years Eve and were upgraded to a suite b/c of the holiday! The location to our evenings events was perfect and we never had to flag a cab as we could walk everywhere. The windows really are insulated and while you can hear a tiny bit, it does not sound like you are in the middle of the city. The room was not giant but comfortable and clean. Our turndown service included a small box of chocolates and a hand-written note-I think again b/c of it being New Years. We actually live in the area but did not want to drive so we chose to stay in town-which means we are locals, know the area and would definetly stay here again.
