Grande Colonial is a beautiful, European-style hotel. The recent renovation has kept the old-world charm and some original hotel features, like the beautiful hard wood in the elevator. I was upgraded to a partial ocean view room; the windows all opened, letting in the great sea breeze. Service was great, nice bar and pool. A block from the Cove and right in the heart of Prospect Street and all the shops and restaurants. I'd definitely stay here again.

The Grande Colonial was perfect for our family of four. We stayed in a modest village view room. La Jolla is breathtaking and the location of the hotel was perfect for us. We were able to walk to many restaurants and shops and still enjoy the beauty of the cove. It was even better than we expected. The staff was particularly helpful and friendly when we asked for suggestions to keep our boys (ages 7 & 9) amused. The pool is beautiful and its surroundings are relaxing. I have to say that the one thing that stood out for us was the valet service. No one wants to pay for parking, but it comes with the territory when you stay in a place like La Jolla (and it really does make things a lot easier anyway). However, the valet staff was excellent in every way. They were worth the money. They were professional, prompt and as friendly as could be. This hotel comes highly recommended by my family. (Oh, yes and even the beds are comfortable!)

Grande Colonial Hotel was very clean, quite comfortable, very quiet. The bed was super comfortable. The staff helpful but not overboard in constantly asking you if things were satisfactory. All amenities in the hotel were superior. Location is excellent for La Jolla Village if that is the main focus of the visit as it was for us. You don't need a car to walk around La Jolla, shop, dine, or sightsee or swim. Highly recommended.

I stay in a lot of hotels. And I have a real problem with "four star" hotels with shabby rooms and shoddy service. There's no excuse for scuffed walls and baseboards, stained carpets or half-dead plants. This one needs a real spring cleaning. The redeeming grace is the top-notch restaurant in the hotel. The location is also a plus. Unfortunately there is no minibar and the two elevators are most likelhy from the 1920's. The front desk staff, in my experience, is disinterested and lackadaisical. It's a job. To counter that, the parking attendants are efficient and extremely helpful. This was my fourth or fifth stay, but I won't be back. Enough already. They're not in step with the competition. The Grande Colonial is more colonial than grand.

The best one was the location to the places in LaJolla (just a short walk to the Seals!) along with great shopping and dining which is a plus if you don't want to drive everywhere. We also needed a car/taxi. The car service was outstanding!! I figured out the cost and it was the same or cheaper than renting a car, or other taxi and so much more luxurious feeling. Simply, it was the best trip to Southern CA that I have taken yet.

I spent 3 nights at The Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla, CA. The hotel's European botique hotel style appeals to me. The building is old - 1920's era - and that makes for small bathrooms. Parking is limited and therefore expensive. Still, it was sparkling clean with extraordinarily comfy beds and linens. The hotel's location, one block from La Jolla's cove and in the middle of the best shopping on Prospect Street can't be beat. Its restaurant, Nine-Ten, has long been a favorite. For a late light nibble, try the cheese sampler from the dessert menu and let the wait staff select your wine. Superb!

Nice hotel in an excellent location. Fair price considering how perfectly situated it is. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. Only problem was that the lights in the room didn't work, and that there was a cherry-picker perched on the balcony outside our room, so it somewhat obstructed an otherwise lovely view. It seemed that there was a decent amount of construction/work going on during our visit.

The hotel was under construction when we arrived; that's something that Hotels.com should have mentioned. All of the windows are being replaced. When that is completed, it will help greatly with the street noise. They are also painting the rooms and replacing the carpets. The beds feel old and the showers had little water pressure - one room's shower just let out a trickle. The hotel needs to update its linens and old television sets. Views from ocean side are beautiful ... and the staff is terrific. There is a really nice bar and restaurant in the lobby.

That alone is a great savings and convenience to any traveler with a laptop. Nine/Ten restaurant is written up everywhere and lived up to the reputation - 10 on a 10 scale even for breakfast. Rooms were beautiful and had nice views. Very comfortable beds. Staff must be trained on "customer comes first" policy because everyone had smiles and eager to answer questions. Only negative is that California low-flow rate toilets are not power assisted and clog very easily. We were at the front desk asking for maintenance and another couple was asking to resolve the same problem. Advice: use the lobby bathrooms for anything other than pee. Aside from the toilet issue we would definitely stay there again and plan to soon.

There's a definite feeling of 'Golden Age'. It's actually quite refreshing to stay somewhere that feels so outside the Hotel Chain Dynamic. The hotel truly captures a lot of what makes the town of La Jolla special -- it's laid back, understated elegance. While there's no mistaking the hotel's romantic appeal, it actually worked quite well for us -- a family of 4 (with two kids under 9). The location -- moments away from good restaurants and the various beaches -- also works very well for the hotel. All in all -- a lovely place and a lovely experience.
