It would be nice if there were one more employee at the reception desk; whether you are checking in or out or just need to get your card key recoded, there is always a slow-moving line with an annoying wait.

I spent the weekend in Rennaissance Hotel Amsterdam in bed! I had organised my Hen weekend in Amsterdam with a group of friends from both the NL & the UK and had booked the Rennaissance Hotel as our base. Unfortunately I turned up to my own Hen weekend very ill and had to spend the weekend in bed whilst my friends went out and had a wonderful time. The Hotel staff couldn't have been more helpful and looked after me. I was checked on a few times and they were constantly asking if they could help me some more. I was able to keep the room for half a day longer at no cost so I could spend the afternoon before my evening flight back home in bed as well. Of course the best place to be when you are not well is at home but if you can't I recommend moving your sick bay here because the service is unrivalled! We have decided to coem back in a years time on the anniversary of this wekend and try again, thsi tiem hoping the now married 'hen' will b ehealthy and able to join in.

From the moment we arrived we were met with smiles and friendly service. The concierge and his gang were great taking our cases from us immediately and delivering them to our roooms. They always had a greeting and a friendly word as we passed through reception. Rooms were lovely. Not huge but adequate . The beds were of good quality with silky soft cotton bedding and lovely bathrooms. Ours was very quiet because it faced the inside and other rooms but friends room was a little noisy because it was over the little road at the side and there was early morning bin emptying, Request an inside room and it is bliss. We didn't take breakfast in the hotel because we thought it a little expensive and there are several restaurants in the area that do a breakfast buffet. Bear in mind though that once you add drinks etc to the buffet price it is not far behind the hotel and you have the convenience of being just downstairs. Would return to the rennaissance for all the above reasons but next time in Amsterdam we would like to stay nearer the Leidesplein because the area is leafy and lovely. The station is a two minute walk from the hotel which is good but there are nicer ares to stay in but for convenience and standards it would be hard to beat.

Hotel is quite impressive from the outside when you see the dome etc (though the dome is really just the conference centre part). Lobby and bar of hotel is lovely, very impressive, feels swanky. Restaurant , breakfast and bar are all overpriced though. What really let this hotel down was the following - and these would prevent me from staying here again and from recommending this hotel to anyone other than lone business travellers. - bedroom was tiny. Said king bed on reservation, only got queen. No leeway with staff on this. - staff were really slow and not very cooperative. We arrived and there was a queue (mostly of couples - no big groups) and it was backed the whole way to the door. There were lots of staff in the lobby and just through the main door, yet they just stood idly by, not even looking busy, and not helping to check anyone in. Everyone was pissed off in the queue, we'd to wait a good 30 minutes. - There was a similar situation checking out too - though that was due to all the people in front of me in the queue complaining about several aspects of the hotel - it's all promise and no give. - whole hotel is non smoking (no rooms at all for smokers - in Amsterdam of all places). Indeed there's a 250 euro fine for smoking in the hotel!

The heating didn't work for the first night and th eroom was very cold, they did offer a heater but also promised that the heat would be restored that evening, but it didn't happen. No tea and coffee in the room which could have been used to warm you. I made two local telephone calls and they charged me international rates. Although the booking confirmation stated all taxes included you still have to pay the city tax on departure - check the small print. Breakfast at the hotel was expensive but we found several excellent places nearby, with continental, panninis and bagels for less than 10 euros.

While the newly renovated rooms are beautiful (they look like a upscale Manhattan apartment), I found the walls were way too thin for a five star hotel. Conversations and televisions can be clearly heard through the walls. I was also surprised to see that much of the Hotel is still under renovations. The construction going on is extensive, and while the staff assured me that construction would not start until 10:00 AM I was awoken at 8:00 AM by a buzz saw. When I called the front desk (as they asked me to do in such a circumstance) they said they would send someone out to stop the noise, but it never did stop. Aside from the construction, I just didn't get an overwhelming sense of welcome, which I expect from a five star hotel.

The location is perfect. The staff is extremely helpful and competent. The hotel itself is aging, but will soon be under renovation. Actually, the common areas are in great shape, but the rooms could use a little updating. I usually stay in 4 or 5 star hotels, and I can see that the Renaissance used to be in this category, but needs some updating to retain its status. That said, I cannot emphasize enough how friendly and helpful the staff was and how great the location is.
