"Terrific location near Union Square"
The Clift is a sort of quirky chic place. Desk staff was terrific even at 4:30 a.m., rooms were very clean and comfortable (very lux in appearance). Accessibility to theater district and Union Square shopping can't be beat, and I found it very convenient to walk from the train station (i.e. you don't need a car). You can even take the trolley to Fisherman's […] Wharf. Down side was that when you're in this part of the city, you have to be ready for crowds and panhandlers, police sirens, traffic noise, etc. My 3rd floor room caught a lot of the urban noise but with my earbuds and a sleep app on my phone I was fine. "Nice vibe great location"
Had a great vibe and very modern art. The room was nice but a little too small. The toiletries were used when we went to open them. Overall nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel lobby was very cool - very dark and lots of fun furniture. The front desk was very nice and the concierge was very helpful. The room floors were surprising light and airy and the room was very nice. The drains on the sinks/tub are a little weird - our sink almost overflowed over night! The best part of the hotel was the toiletries! They were […] so stinkin' cool (and they'll give you extras!)!! :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Comfort & Convenience"
We enjoyed our stay. Good size room and comfy bed. Water pressure made for an awesome shower! Close to all the sights. Highly recommend this hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Love this spot. Stayed there many years ago. The real charm is in the hotel, not the rooms. Mine (room) was in severe need of an update (Soiled chaise, and tub paint chipping) The staff and bar area are par excellence. But im not sleeping there. Was really disapointed in the room, with one exception,, The Bed! (Slept like a baby,,, was so comfortable) […] So all was not lost. I like this place. I hope they give it a once over. it deserves it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Traveling Treat"
The Clift is just outside Union Square and offers easy access to so many of The City's amenities that it always makes my trips more enjoyable. I've never not enjoyed my stay or the wonderful service of the staff. I recommend that anyone coming to San Fransico adds at least spending one night at the Clift to their list of things "to do".Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I absolutely loved the Clift. It was close to everything. My fiancé and I walked everywhere. Near shopping mall, union square & starbucks! :) Hotel was clean and perfect! Clean and not trashy at all!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"not so happy 4th of july"
I was on 4th of july vaca/ the hotel pictures seemed better online . The area was close to shopping . but the cleanliness was not great/ found broken glass in the bathroom floor / the bathtub paint was chipping / the décor was outdated and so was the drapes ect.. the hotel hallways smelled like cigarettes .. breakfast on the week end ended early at […] 10;00 am .. the hotel seemed too expensive for what it was ... :( Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Disappointing poor service"
From a hotel that boasts about being luxurious, I would expect some great service, however, I was very disappointed. First, I called ahead to have a fridge delivered to the room (I was on a strict diet), and was promised one; however, when I arrived, I was told that they ran out of fridges... I was then told I could use the drink cooler for food instead […] for a night. Well, after putting my food in the cooler for a night I discovered that the cooler wasn't working properly and had to throw away most of my food. After complaining, I was given a fridge the next day. Second, valets backed my car into something with black paint on the last day, I didn't notice it until later when I arrived to Napa; I knew for sure it was at the Clift, because I didn't stop or park anywhere after (they SOBs knew they messed up the car because I could tell they tried to rub off the black marks) and now I am stuck with a repair bill. Lastly, while checking out, I asked the receptionist to call for our car for us, before checking out, and she told me to go look for a parking valet outside, and that's for $50 a night (by the way, I had to look for valets several times, they were really good at disappearing; probably short on staff)? The hotel also turned out to be on the border with a sketchy part of town, so I would honestly suggest to stay in another hotels; for the same price there are plenty of better places by the Union Square. "Great hotel in a great location"
My wife and I throughly enjoyed our stay. Great staff, beautiful hotel, great sized home especially in the city and the location was perfectGenuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful hotel. Loved the lobby and the bar. room was nice. Bathroom had a beat up bathtub, but overall fine. The only thing that bothered me was the carpet stains all over the halls outside the elevators. I wasn't sure if it was because the place was dog friendly or someone had spilled coffee.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was amazing. We were there only a short time (one night) but enjoyed ourselves very much. Best shower in the world! The bar in on the first floor was great...but very expensive to have a table. Thank you for an overall wonderful stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Always stay here... great hotel and location..."
I always stay here when I visit the city. Great location so that you can walk to almost anywhere. The staff are friendly. It is kind of expensive and parking is currently at $52/night. lol. lots of extra expenses when you stay here...Genuine Expedia guest review

"The almost-perfect SF hotel"
The Clift has a cool bar, big spacious rooms, excellent service, adequate gym, complete business facilities, and is centrally located to Union Square and Downtown. However, their restaurant, which is a fine-dining white-tablecloth concept is dull and 80-90% empty (even at breakfast). I wish the Clift would bring back a hip sushi or asian fusion restaurant […] with some vibe (ie, like when Asia de Cuba was there). That would make it perfect! "4 Star Hotel, Really??"
We have season tickets for the SF Symphony and Opera. We live in the East Bay, and therefore always make attending an event a weekend get-away. We have stayed in most of the 3.5-4.5 star hotels in the Union Square and Financial District areas. We were VERY excited about finally staying at the Clift. What a let down! TINY, TINY bathroom. In the room […] was only a small dining room chair to sit on, NO dresser [instead were PLASTIC drawers on a bookshelf INSIDE a TINY closet], no power strip on the desk, no outlets on the night stands, NO ice machines, Bent up metal mini-blinds on the windows??? I am not kidding! We lived out of our suitcase for 2 nights [only one luggage rack] and had to put our health and beauty items on the desk and charge our phones on the one outlet about 4 inches off the floor. The room was painted a stupid lavender color. Upon entering out room, there was a HUGE splatter stain on the bathroom door. It was gross and wiped right off with soap and water. The bed and sheets were very nice. Lastly, entering the hotel in the evenings was a joke. The entire entry way and lobby was overrun with loud obnoxious patrons going to the hotel nightclub. We were on the 8th floor and could not hear the music, but we rode in the elevator with some people who were on the 3rd floor and they said they could hear it as they tried to sleep. Trust me, this is NOT a 4 Star hotel. We will not ever consider staying here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great hotel awaits some renovation"
The staff are friendly, competent and responsive, and the hotel, like all Schrager/Morgans properties, is stylish, but the rooms could use some renovation--the resurfaced bathtub in my room was peeling and unattractive. The room was average for this level of hotel--big enough, but not large, without much storage to unpack to. Perhaps this is why it […] was a bit of a bargain. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great timeless 'girls' weekend hotel"
wonderful fun hotel in the center of everything...Redwood room is still a great bar to grab a drink...Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Overall hotel met our needs. Staff were great. Room was always clean and they never skimped on the personal hygiene products. Nice products btw. Only thing we didn't like was all the guest doors banged really loud. Simple dampening devices are badly needed. If you're into the party scene, this makes for awesome stay. We didnt eat there but it should […] have. Sounded amazing and the yelp reviews are good. Didn't bother us but we thought it was funny that guests comprised of old men with escorts latched onto arms. "great right up till i went into the bathroom"
I have stayed at the Clift many times. Great location, generally very good rooms, but every once in a while you get a room that hasn't been updated or needs work. My room was great, junior suite, very comfortable and well kept. The tub/shower however was reminiscent of a Motel 6 in Elko Nevada... the porcelin laminate was pealing off the tub in chunks […] and the shower curtain was rusted and dirty. I know they can do better. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"San Fransisco treat!"
If you love the chic and hip feel you're going to treat yourself. Very cool hotel with underground fashion only Phillipe Starck can create situated in the heart of shopping and dinning. Pretty pricey but its San Fran so be aware of the 15% tax per night stay and other fees you might encounter. Rooms are clean and modern also spacious, the bar and restaurant […] are the ultimate fashionable hangout also pricey but well worth it if you can afford a $200 + dinner and cocktail each night. I recommend it , it's well situated and the staff is very helpful! HOT SPOT! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The rooms were small and the furniture is funky"
The staff was nice and the hotel is in a nice area, but parking is outrageous. Take the BART If you don't need your car.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location Historic Building"
The Clift is a great place to stay as long as you don't expect a modern experience. The building is old so the rooms do not have a modern layout. The vibe of the hotel is hip and the bar is a popular spot. Parking is $50 a day so Uber might be a better method of transportation.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Home Away from Home"
Great staff, very comfortable beds, style and design of the hotel is top notch! Definitely have drinks in the Redwood Room!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Room itself: Dirty.smelled of smoke.bathtub greatly stained. Water bottle from bar was previously opened. Carpet discolored. Foam pillows. Felt like a doublewide. Bar area: tacky lounge. Girls with cutoffs and hugh heels dancing in center ( enough said )? Cheap. Redwood Room too classy for this hotel. Furniture uncomfortable and unattractive...Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Trendy, downtown SF hotel"

Nice place good vibe nice bar and atmosphere great place to stay in the city. I got a studio queen it was not that greatGenuine Expedia guest review
"Subdued Colors and Mirrors"
The hotel is very chic----popular with young people. But, the over the top use of subdued purple and gray colors, while they may be soothing, do not raise one's spirits. Also, so over the top with the use of mirrors. There was a floor to ceiling mirror on the wall at the foot of the bed and one behind the bed---it gave one the sense of being watched, […] which of course one was not. The old Clift had an older charm to it that has been lost. The restaurant is too dark, whereas the old Four Seasons was open, very convivial, with lots of light coming in the windows. One had the sensation of being in hiding inside the Clift. As said, maybe this sort of decor appeals to a young set. But it puts off the mature traveler somewhat. "Close to Union Square"
I have stayed at the Clift previously and had to come back. I absolutely love this hotel and its location next to Union Square. The Redwood Room is one of my favorite aspects of this gorgeous getaway. North Beach (the best place for authentic Italian cuisine) is just a quick cab ride away. We will be coming back again very soon.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Valet is a Nightmare"
The valet at the hotel is ridiculous. It took us 45 minutes to get our car and we missed our reservations. (costs $60 a night to valet) Careful with the in house movies, because ours continued to pause every 3-4 minutes during the entire movie. (costs $20 for a movie)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This is by no means a criticism of the hotel because we were warned but I just want to let guests and hotel management know that the room on the 17th floor, with the fabulous view is not necessarily the best choice. They do let you know that you have to take a flight of stairs to get up there, which was fine with us. They do let you know that it is […] next to the elevator shaft and can be noisy. We agreed to take the room but want you to know that it is indeed noisy. It's not just the occasional service elevator noise. Because it is adjacent to the mechanicals for all the elevator banks, it is pretty darn loud in there. I know it's all about maximizing revenue but that room should really be turned into an office center or smaller version of their fabulous fitness room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"a refreshing change"
I had the pleasure of spending 4 days at the Clift during a recent trip to San Francisco While there is no hiding that it is an old property that has been done up, its quirky chic décor is a refreshing change from the MacDonald’s fit out that is offered by most large hotel chains The breakfast restaurant offered a great a la carte option to the ubiquitous […] buffet and the bar is a must My only criticism is that as a frequent traveller with limited mobility I do rely in on well-equipped roll in showers and while they meet the basic requirement and it is impossible to satisfy everyone’s requirement they are at the low end of the list and could be improved That only criticism is certainly mitigated by the quality of staff. Their friendly yet pragmatic approach to everything showed justified pride in their hotel A great place to stay Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"It's seen better days..."
This was my first stay at The Clift. I chose it because of how close it was to Union Square and the shopping I wanted to do my one day in SF. Unfortunately the room I paid $529 for was badly in need of a fresh coat of paint, the carpets were soiled and it was very, very small. We stopped in the bar for a nightcap and as soon as we sat down two people […] fell over and were escorted out. A minute later another person who was obviously over served fell down too leading us to believe the staff did not manage the room well. Be prepared for SF prices such as the $52 overnight parking fee and almost $100 in taxes automatically added to your room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"last minute weekend stay"
When I saw that Expedia was offering the Clift hotel for under $200, that was my immediate choice. The hotel is central to downtown and Union Square. In the hotel's earlier days, it was well known for The Redwood Room, which was a fabulous old-school bar. I had my first martini there. The Redwood Room is no more, but it is part of the lobby area, which […] was pleasant and very quiet. My room on the 15th floor was comfortable, well organized and QUIET! The Clift has installed double paned windows to keep the traffic and street noise out. The room had a spectacular view, a very comfortable bed and deluxe sheets and pillows. I was able to sleep well there. I ordered room service breakfast before checking out, which was reasonably priced and delicious (RARE!!). The next time I go to San Francisco, The Clift is my FIRST CHOICE FOR HOTELS - if I can afford it. ps - a comparable hotel in London would charge double this amount or more. Thank you, Expedia!!
