I have stayed here many times over the years. Its time to refresh the very dated décor. The Redwood room is fantastic but the uncomfortable seating is a joke. The valet service is very poor -slow and prone to mistakes. There is not adequate clothing storage in the rooms--way to spare and so very 1988.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hip and swanky!"
We had a great experience at Clift. We were in town for the night on our way to Sonoma. It was my wife's birthday and we had drinks and appitizers in the Redwood room ( a must see!) and our server sent us a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberry's to our room after we returned from dinner. Now that's classy. Got great recommendations from […] the staff for nearby restaurants too! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The hotel lobby has an attractive lobby, & bar area. My room was clean, some what small, but functional. The staff were all friendly and willing to help.i enjoyed my stay at the cliff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"More Like 4.5 Stars"
When my husband and I first arrived at the Clift, it was late, and it had been a long day of travel from DFW. So when we heard loud music and the hustle-bustle of people who were clearly ready to party, we'd wondered if we'd chosen the wrong hotel. But after that first night, we came around on the Clift and wound up really enjoying our stay. It's a […] unique hotel, that's for sure, and our accommodations felt like we owned a small apartment smack dab in the middle of the action. Located in Union Square, we were only a stone's throw away from great shopping and lots of fantastic dining options. We were also pleasantly surprised by what was in walking distance, and getting a cab to anywhere else was easy-peasy, too. Oh, and if you have a chance, try the room service breakfast. The Belgian waffle with the berries, cream and sugared almonds is pure bliss. The service at the hotel, room and otherwise, is top-notch, too. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Clift is in a fantastic location a few steps from union square. If you're not familiar with the area, a couple blocks west can seem seedy, but I've never had any issues. The hotel rooms are very big for the price, with comfortable beds, floor to ceiling mirrors, and interesting color decor. Also love the bath soaps, they smell fantastic. The bar […] in the redwood room can be a sight to see on weekends; it gets very colorful Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
All good except no one picked up my evening room service tray till the next day. Otherwise nice, quiet, clean, comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
I've stayed at the Hudson NY before and the rooms were unbelievably tiny and since Clift is under the same hotel group i was weary at first, but much to my surprise our room was pretty spacious, clean and filled with natural light. Lovely bar with great drinks, short in-room dining list though you're in a great location so why stay in the room? Walls […] a little tooo thin though i heard my German neighbors get into a screaming match. I'd still recommend the hotel to friends though, we stayed for 2 nights last weekend. "With the Kids in SF"
Great location and nice hotel. Loud, dark and lacks service.Genuine Expedia guest review
This hotel has cigarette smoke smell in the rooms and hallways. We were given one room then transfered to another one after telling them how extreme the smoke smell was and the new room was also smokey. There was a cigarette but in the public hallway outside of the elevator for several hours. There is security after 1pm because this hotel borders a […] bad neighborhood. The room had a cracked tub finished and some hairs on the bathroom door. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"I stayed in the room practically my entire trip."
Minus the peeling wallpaper, a weak T.V. remote control and the ridiculously overpriced internet access, my stay was superb. The bedding was heavenly.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great service, comfortable bed, eclectic décor, high-quality place to stay. My only complaint was the bathroom is pretty small. Other than that, it's fantastic. Great location, too. Walking distance to lots of great restaurants and shopping.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cool hotel in a good spot"
Great service, great food, and great bar. Rooms could do with a bit of a touch-up, bathrooms in particular. Still a great hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Dedicated party people only"
The hotel itself was visually exceptional, trendy with great lighting and color schemes. Staff were also friendly and helpful. The downside was the nightclub was so loud I couldn't sleep (on the 3rd floor) even with ear plugs. Absolutely the loudest room I have ever had in my life, and I travel a lot. When I finally gave up and asked for another room […] in the middle of the night I ran into a couple in the elevator who said they were leaving the nightclub because it was too loud! Rooms were fine with better than average bedding, trendy color scheme and a nice stereo for my ipod, but small and otherwise unremarkable. I arrived at my meeting the next day exhausted. Wouldn't visit again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Just seemed old, the bath tub was falling apart! Staff was fine, overall very average for a $350 room. Will not do it again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Funky, European feeling hotel"
The lobby of the hotel is very updated, swanky, and fun. Our room, on the third floor, was somewhat small and European seeming (old build, dated fixtures, tight bathroom), but everything worked and was very clean and very nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clift no more..."
I visit San Francisco and stay at the Clift a few times a year, but will be looking elsewhere. The hotel is beautiful and trendy but they don't do customer support too well. The staff seems to be too busy socializing to care abut the customer experience. The doorman are frequently not at the door to open them for incomers (they are quite heavy so this […] actually was a problem), the front desk always seemed understaffed and there was alawya sa long line. The rooms were tiny and I had the bad luck of getting an interior room that faces a brick wall and other hotel rooms (so NO PRIVACY unless I kept the blinds closed the whole time). The building is beautiful and the hotel is well designed, but hospitality should extend beyond a trendy facade. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"beautiful hotel with great location"
Highly recommended. Only downside with our stay was having room directly above bar area. Was loud and difficult to sleep. Otherwise good service, nice amenities.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Trendy Union Square Hotel"
We enjoyed our stay at the C lift. Upon arriving a day later than expected we were given a room on an upper floor. The room was terrific, well appointed and spacious, but the bath was tight. The dressing room was a nice feature.Bath fixtures were a bit tired, and the soundproofing between us and the adjoining room was less than perfect, but overall […] a good stay. We thought the bar was over priced, lots of better places nearby to get a drink and a meal. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"More Weird than Neat"
In short: Uncomfortably Weird, NOT Romantically Eccentric. Details: Bed was lovely. "City view" was a wall of windows 100 ft away. Mirror walls everywhere in room and bathroom. Lighting was dark and cold. Maid service knocked and came in without greeting in the evening and knocked and woke us up at 8:45 in the morning on our day of checkout (checkout […] time is noon). Valet parking is the only good option if you have a car and it is expensive and takes a long time. Great Union Square location walking distance to everything. For the price, there are much better places in the same areas. Keep looking Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Luxurious cool hotel, good location, great rate"

"Will stay somewhere else!"
I will not come back here. 5 Reasons: 1. The noise outside is crazy and chaotic with parking and very busy outside. 2. I can hear conversation next door, the walls are thin behind the mirrors on the wall, can hear EVERYTHING. Mentioned this to the front desk, she said "Oh, I know" then shrugged her shoulders. 3. Uncomfortable bed 4. Expensive Valet […] $59.00 tips not included 5. No refrigerator, only mini bar *Only thing I like is the decor in the lobby with big chairs and the door man "John" is the only friendly staff and helpful. Rest not so much. Oh, 1 more thing. It was only 9am and the housekeeping kept knocking on our door every 30 minutes asking when are we leaving. Seriously! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cool Vibe, no light"
Was in San Fran with my teenage daughter for a family wedding. Concierge staff was amazing help w navigation and car rental. Room was decent, bed was comfy but bathroom had very dim, little light. "good hotel, very convenient to Union Square"
my first time at the Clift. Nice hotel, great location. For the city location, my room was relatively very quiet. And, another surprise, it was very spacious and nicely designed. The lobby, is extremely dark. I know this is part of the design but they could provide other locations on that floor, that guests could sit and read but all of the parts of […] the common lobby area are dark. "Great Staff, Rooms and location were just okay."
The staff was beyond friendly in every way. The rooms to me were very blah. I normally travel for business so maybe I'm too used to the consistency of a Hilton or Marriott, but these rooms missed common amenities like in room coffee and ice without paying for a $6 cup. The location is great if you're in town to shop, but if you are there to see the […] sights get ready to walk some major hills. "Terrific location near Union Square"
The Clift is a sort of quirky chic place. Desk staff was terrific even at 4:30 a.m., rooms were very clean and comfortable (very lux in appearance). Accessibility to theater district and Union Square shopping can't be beat, and I found it very convenient to walk from the train station (i.e. you don't need a car). You can even take the trolley to Fisherman's […] Wharf. Down side was that when you're in this part of the city, you have to be ready for crowds and panhandlers, police sirens, traffic noise, etc. My 3rd floor room caught a lot of the urban noise but with my earbuds and a sleep app on my phone I was fine. Had a great vibe and very modern art. The room was nice but a little too small. The toiletries were used when we went to open them. Overall nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel lobby was very cool - very dark and lots of fun furniture. The front desk was very nice and the concierge was very helpful. The room floors were surprising light and airy and the room was very nice. The drains on the sinks/tub are a little weird - our sink almost overflowed over night! "Comfort & Convenience"
We enjoyed our stay. Good size room and comfy bed. Water pressure made for an awesome shower! Close to all the sights. Highly recommend this hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Love this spot. Stayed there many years ago. The real charm is in the hotel, not the rooms. Mine (room) was in severe need of an update (Soiled chaise, and tub paint chipping) The staff and bar area are par excellence. But im not sleeping there. Was really disapointed in the room, with one exception,, The Bed! (Slept like a baby,,, was so comfortable) […] So all was not lost. I like this place. "A Traveling Treat"
The Clift is just outside Union Square and offers easy access to so many of The City's amenities that it always makes my trips more enjoyable. "Disappointing poor service"
From a hotel that boasts about being luxurious, I would expect some great service, however, I was very disappointed. First, I called ahead to have a fridge delivered to the room (I was on a strict diet), and was promised one; however, when I arrived, I was told that they ran out of fridges... I was then told I could use the drink cooler for food instead […] for a night. Well, after putting my food in the cooler for a night I discovered that the cooler wasn't working properly and had to throw away most of my food. After complaining, I was given a fridge the next day. Second, valets backed my car into something with black paint on the last day, I didn't notice it until later when I arrived to Napa; I knew for sure it was at the Clift, because I didn't stop or park anywhere after (they SOBs knew they messed up the car because I could tell they tried to rub off the black marks) and now I am stuck with a repair bill. Lastly, while checking out, I asked the receptionist to call for our car for us, before checking out, and she told me to go look for a parking valet outside, and that's for $50 a night (by the way, I had to look for valets several times, they were really good at disappearing; probably short on staff)? The hotel also turned out to be on the border with a sketchy part of town, so I would honestly suggest to stay in another hotels; for the same price there are plenty of better places by the Union Square. "Great hotel in a great location"
My wife and I throughly enjoyed our stay. Great staff, beautiful hotel, great sized home especially in the city and the location was perfectGenuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful hotel. Loved the lobby and the bar. room was nice. Bathroom had a beat up bathtub, but overall fine. The only thing that bothered me was the carpet stains all over the halls outside the elevators. I wasn't sure if it was because the place was dog friendly or someone had spilled coffee.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was amazing. We were there only a short time (one night) but enjoyed ourselves very much. Best shower in the world! The bar in on the first floor was great...but very expensive to have a table. Thank you for an overall wonderful stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
