"Good location, ultra modern decor"
I've been to receptions atop this hotel in the Spanish Suite before so was familiar with the decor which is really cool and modern. This is the first stay since I'm normally at the Hilton or Nikko around the block. The staff and hotel are great, but I was not informed that my room was on a smoking floor (5th floor) so upon getting off the elevator […] I could smell the cigarette smoke. I should have asked to be moved but I arrived late (3am) due to flight delays, and was only there one day (1.5 nights) and very little time at hotel or room since my meetings were at Hilton, I let it go. All in all, I'd recommend this hotel but just explicitly ask for non smoking if you're not a smoker. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Clift - A Nice Hotel for a getaway"
The girlfriend I wanted to head out to SF for July 4th weekend, needed a place to stay so we chose Clift based on the popular reviews. When we first arrived, to me it didn't look like the photos; on first impression, it was dark and didn't look too big... However, the service was extremely nice. I didn't think the doormen did a great job, on more than […] one occassion they stood there while I opened my own door (there's two of them leading inside...) and I thought it quite odd they wouldn't open the door for me. Anyways, the hotel room was upgraded to a studio suite, and I know SF has very small real estate so I thought the room was spacious... very clean. Noise level was surprisingly quiet...clean bed, clean bathroom, clean everything. I would recommmend Clift. Compared to other luxurious hotels, Clift isn't all that great in my honest opinion...but compared to everything in SF, Clift is a great spot. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location to Union Square."
Great location to Union Square. This hotel is situation in the perfect location. There is overnight public parking one block up by the Taylor Hotel for $30. The hotel is fine but it was too dark for our liking. The lobby and rooms are filled with weird art deco, modern furniture and a dark ambiance. Not bad ust not our cup of tea.Genuine Expedia guest review
We spent two nights in this hotel. Pros: great bed; great shower; spacious suite, great staff all the way around Deltas: costs; noise level at night; number of street people in every direction from hotel entrance We were told upon check-in that we were being given a "free room upgrade" (which I recall already having booked) to a room directly behind […] the service elevators, which we had the pleasure of listening to each night of our stay and a window view of an adjacent hotel's re-roofing job. I had to wonder what our lodgings would have been had we not received "the upgrade"! We were charged $50 per night for parking in a $25 garage and charged a parking tax on top of that. Nothing is complimentary - even a top sheet for our bed (a practice the hotel "had discontinued two years ago"). Being an older hotel we also heard the noises from variou water pipes, etc., in the walls. With the obligatory tipping for the various hotel staff (which I was happy to do because they were quite helpful) added into our overall expenses I would have to say that the value of staying at this hotel left me a bit disillusioned. "Great hotel; great location"
Stayed here many times over the years. The Clift continues to provide excellent service, modern facilities, stylishly decorated rooms -- and good-sized rooms for a big-city hotel. Excellent location within a couple of blocks of Union Square shopping and restaurant, cable car turnaround, Market St. The Clift's cocktail lounge/bar off the lobby is among […] the best in the city. All hotel parking in SF is pricey, including The Clift -to save money, try the nearby public parking garages. The Clift remains our #1 hotel choice when visiting San Francisco. "Great Experience, they gave us a free upgrade!"
Older hotel but very nice inside. Rooms are older but have good space and great views. They keep it classy at clift for sure.Genuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful hotel, great location, GREAT lounge and awesome cocktails. Only downside: the tiniest room I've ever stayed in!!!! My boyfriend and I could barely make our way around the bed. We had to hop over it to get to the other side of the room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great location. Fun bar and check-in. Really small bathrooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not worth the money!"
First and foremost, when you have 4 greeters you would think you would not have to open the door yourself. WRONG! As my partner and I stumbled through a set of 2 very heavy glass doors with our luggage catching as we tried to make our way through. And did any of those 4 people ask if they could help or do anything? Nope, they continued to chat about […] whatever they were talking to each-other about. The check-in was smooth and they hostess was very nice, but I still had a bad taste in my mouth from the rude entrance experience. I decided to shrug it off and enjoy our stay like we had planned. The room was not well put together at all and was disgusting everywhere! The seat at the end of the bed had a burn hole in it and was pretty much black (original color being tan). The bathrooms had half rolls of toilet paper and used toiletries. The grouting was molded in the bathroom and everything was just black and disgusting. The phone was broken. We got a different room twice and it was the same. They have us a suite and it was still the same. We didn't have the strength to keep complaining and moving around so we decided at 7:30 at night (5 HOURS after checking in!). Like I said, I really wanted to enjoy our stay, but next time I will skip this hotel and go with the hotels that I know have wonderful rooms for the exact same cost and within a 4 block radius. DO NOT STAY HERE!-trust me! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel remodeled since last visit."
Hotel was dark and violet. all chairs in lobby were different, and uncomfortable. Bar was not open some of the time, or if it was, the doors were closed. Room was comfortable, and clean. No major complaints, but was not totally comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
I would highly recommend a visit from those with cash to waste and the appropriate taste. From the moment you walk in there is a dark and exotic, yet very sophisticated ambiance. The entire staff was perfectly professional and helpful. The bathrooms had obvious repairs and up dates. Which, while not a bad thing, I shouldn't be able to notice. Prices […] seemed about right, with the exception of a $50 parking fee and an associated 7 dollar tax, as well as, $320 pending vs the $100 I had been informed of. Excellent hotel for the rich and adventurous. Finally, there doesn't appear to be any signage other that a roughly 12 x 12 plaque on the wall so keep your eyes open when you're trying to find it. All in all, very nice place, but not for everyone. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Centrally located and very pleasant"
We had a great time at the Clift. The staff was lovely and the rooms were nice. We even got upgraded while we were there. We had just gotten engaged so they sent us champagne and strawberries which was over the top service. I would definitely go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Would return, but..."
This hotel is well located within walking distance to Union Square, theaters and great restaraunts. Better suited for the leisure traveler in my opinion. The desk chair in my guest room was more of a decorative accent chair, not ergonomic, and not suited for sitting and working as I needed to do. The lighting in the bathroom was poor, and on the dark […] side. Positives: great location, beautiful, warm lobby with fireplace, dramatic decor, and chic bar. Prompt and friendly room service, and housekeeping. Quiet inner facing courtyard rooms with high quality linens, great towels, bath producs, and VERYcomfy king bed, plus full length mirrors in room and bath. Areas for improvement: tired grey carpet in the guest room with stains, awkward seating arrangements in the guest room especially for two people who wantto visit with each other, and have a drink in room, dim lighting in the bathroom, need lighting in the closets, (could not see my clothes), more hangars, and brighter lighting in the guest room entryway. In all, I would stay again, but need a better chair to sit and work, - can you say: Humanscale Liberty chair? Also would return because of the high level of service, (same as the Hudson in NYC, a sister property) and that comfy bed! Not a perfect stay, but very good. Thank you! "I recommend the Clift"
Good job by them --- 4.5 starsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
New for me in San Francisco and every bit a good stay as the better known hotels.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was good but I was disappointed. First room I went to the bathtub's paint was peeling. The next room smelled funny and there was a hair on the bed. The third room which I took had a jelly bean (blue one) near the bed. Little things but shouldn't happened if each room is checked.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Clift is the original trendy SF hotel and it is still among the best.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Have always stayed here"
I have always stayed at the Clift Hotel over the years. It has always been a beatutiful, upscale hotel with a great location in Union Square. It used to be a Four Seasons Hotel, now a Morgan Hotel. The bed in the room was super comfy with many great amenities. The staff were helpful and coffee was gratis each morning in the lobby. I had a problem with […] my neighbor playing loud music and hotel security took care of it right away. I only wish I could have stayed longer. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel staff were excellent- we were upgraded to a beautiful large room. The decor is art-deco and super fun. Breakfast was pretty fast- we had to be someplace and they served us immediately. An excellent hotel especially for the money!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Too much like the W"
We were disappointed in the Clift. I guess they have some sort of grandfather clause that allows smoking in the rooms, as pot wafted out in the hallway as we were walking to and from our room. I expected more from CA smoking bans! Also, the night club scene was really loud and the people were extremely rude. Tried to get a drink in the lobby but I guess […] we weren't cool enough to be waited on. Will pass next time we are in the city. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel in need of TLC"
We've stayed at the Clift multiple times over the years, including when it first opened, and have always enjoyed our stays. Love the lobby and the room decor but was disappointed this trip to see how it has slipped in upkeep. Our upper floor, corner room was lovely and the crisp white linens were perfect. However, the bathroom shower was mildewed, the […] faucet barely operational and the doorknob broken. Everything could use a freshen - rooms, elevators, lobbies, etc. We were also challenged in getting a late arriving suitcase delivered - though we made multiple calls to the front desk, they said it hadn't arrived. It took a lot of calls to the airlines and their couriers to find out that the it had been signed for by the hotel at 4:30 pm - when we called the desk again at 6:30 pm, they said it had just arrived! For the money you spend, not at all worth it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
My boyfriend and I came in late from NYC. Check-in was smooth and twe had a late night drink at the bar, which is always hopping. Thanks to the late checkout, we were able to get some morning time in SF before heading south for a wedding.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clean but out of the way"
Nice and clean but way out of the way from the bay and bathroom wayyyy too small. Great big pillows though! Oh ya the building is brick it's across the street from walgreens NO SIGN JUST VERY SMALL SIGN WHEN YOU WALK IN. On one way street so we kept passing it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Terrible. We ended up checking out at 1:30am because we couldn't bring ourselves to actually sleep there. They did try and fix some of our issues after I brought it to their attention. However, after seeing dirty boot prints on our bathroom floor (our shower would do from hot to cold) I was done.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Amazing hotel, smoking floors are OBVIOUS!"
Love Morgans, and great vibe all around. I asked to change rooms to two double beds and they were friendly and nice to accommodate, however, on a smoking optional floor. Well, unless you are a smoker, these rooms and floors are STRONG and MUSTY! Also took 40 minutes and 3 calls down to get a wine opener... Otherwise, great stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Too Small and Unaccomodating"
Stayed at the Clift for my wedding weekend. I had spent a decent amount of time in the bar/llounge, The Redwood Room, before and always loved the decor and ambiance. So, I figured it would make my wedding weekend all the more special. While clean and convenient, the rooms are pretty darn small and very cramped with too many mirrors. Felt like I was […] in my first post-college apartment with the weird naroow entry hallway, cramped bathroom, and old paint job. The overall hotel layout felt a lot cheaper (in every sense of the word) than the lobby would indicate. Plus, the walls are evidently paper thin since security kicked my girlfriends out of my bachelorette party for being too loud. If laughing and celebrating at a hotel room around midnight is forbidden, then what good is it? There were literally four of us giggling over my naughty gifts...yet they escorted my guests to the curb without so much as a "let's get you a more private room" or "let's take this down to the lounge." Very rude and very inconsiderate considering we explained the occassion. On top of that, the cleaning crew was knocking on our door by 9:30am on Saturday to clean...though we were checking out in a few hours. Never ever experienced that before...especially so early on a checkout day! However, the lobby staff was friendly upon our departure and, as always, the bar/lounge was class. "Worn around the edges but charming and comfortable"
The room was large/bright as was the very comfortable bed. The bathroom, however, was cramped and had definitely seen better days. My only real complaint was being stopped by a rather rude/large security guard (I'm assuming) who demanded one night that I show him my room key when I tried to walk to the elevator to my room. For some reason management […] assumes because of the vagrants and drunken 20 somethings constantly stumbling through the lobby at night, this security measure is preferable to investing in card access elevators. An odd choice, so be prepared. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
