"Great location!"
The hotel was nice. Definitely would stay there again. Easy access to public transportation and shopping areas plus the San Francisco Play House is nearby if you like theater. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

"Not perfect but a pleasant stay"
The staff is welcoming and friendly. Nice atmosphere at the bar. Coffee is served in the lobby in the am but they run 100% out near the end..so get there early. There is free wine from 5-6 I believe which is a nice touch. We had a large room with 2 queen size beds. The beds were a bit hard but generally comfortable. The shower is great..but if you are a female you will find the tiny sink frustrating..bring a makeup bag that is capable of hanging on the door. Everything else you just have to throw it on the floor or put it on the toilet. The comments about the walls being thin are true. We thought someone was talking outside our door but it was in the room next to us. The real issue though is the noise coming from the street. The garbage trucks sounded as if we were on ground level - and we were on the 19th floor!! Unfortunately they were picking up recycling so it was a sleepless night. The weekend was much quieter. My advice is to get a room in the back of the hotel. Nice location...we mostly used the SF transit (bus/trolley/Bart) during the and used Uber at night. Go to Valencia street in the Mission District for fun shopping and food.

"Met family in Union Square"
We had a nice time. Bed mattress needs replacement. Lobby bar was nice, wine hour, coffee in the morning with paper cups. Grand old hotel, great location. Park your car in Sutter/stockton garage 1-block away, $20 instead of valet $59 plus tips.

"Great spot"

"Great location--old building"
The hotel is in the heart of San Francisco in a prime location. The property is an old building and it shows. Rooms are renovated some but there are things that cannot be easily fixed: small/tiny bathroom, small room for today's standard.

I arrived on Thursday 7/30 and advised the front desk that I needed a rollaway for the next night. Before leaving for the day on Friday, I reminded the staff that I needed a rollaway that evening. Upon my return that evening, there was still no rollaway, and therefore I asked again. Each time, I was told they would deliver the rollaway to the room. After about a half hour of waiting (it was now Friday night), I was told there were no rollaways available. When I explained that my daughter is 21 years old and cannot "cuddle up" with my husband and me, I was given an additional room (at not cost) for her. That turned out to be a fine accommodation, but I was very frustrated with the unavailability of the rollaway despite my more-than-timely requests.

"Dirty,dated and unwelcoming."
Stayed here for 4 nights.Day 1 checked into room wad of toilet paper stuck in ceiling lamp like a plug.There were black specks on the mattress and they looked like insect casings.The room was small,smelled like stale smoke and the baseboards were full of dust.Night manager came up and was appalled.Moved us to another floor saying it was a 4 level upgrade.Room was bigger,bed was bigger,but still old and worn.The walls are paper-thin.People next door decided to party until 2am.we were just so over it,did not complain.Obviously this is a 3 star hotel at best.Location is great,but not worth the price.Concierge couldn't get our boarding passes,I had to teach her how to navigate the web to attain them,after 10 mins.Restaurant is very good,that was the best part on our last night.I felt bad as I had my sister and her son also book a room at the same hotel and they were so unhappy about the hotel and the staff.

"Great stay at Sir Francis Drake"
My husband and I had a great stay at this hotel. The location was great and accessible to everywhere we wanted to go for our short stay in San Francisco. I think this a beautiful hotel and would definitely stay here again. Staff and hotel service were all amazing. Our only complaint are minor: poor view out of our room and the bathroom was considerably small.

"Great room; TINY bathroom"
Great hotel. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Concierge was very helpful in recommending and making dinner reservations, and in advising us about transportation to various sites. Only negative with the hotel was the tiny bathroom. There was only one towel rack and it was located in the shower; none for a hand towel by the sink. There was no vanity or counter top space to set toiletries in the bathroom. The bathroom was definitely a one-person at a time area.

"short stay but fun"
I had to change rooms as my first room was too small. The second room was better. The best feature is the location-- it's close to everything and you can either walk or get other transport.

I had called the hotel twice to request a room that had a window which opened. The day I checked in, I was informed the front desk staff had no way to know which rooms offer opening windows or not. My room was like a dungeon. The tiny window was so high up on the wall I could not see out of it at all unless I was standing on the bed. The window was painted shut. Tiny, dark dungeon room when I requested a functioning window (and was promised one!) did not please this traveler. The hotel smelled musty. I was on the third floor, which had a strange, strong odor - and no way to get any fresh air.

"Over priced, but excellent service"
For the exorbitant price we were paying, I would expect a microwave and refrigerator in the room. No such luck. Room was very comfortable. I was able to get extra towels right away. We had asked for a roll-away bed; the first room we were given did not have one nor was there space for one, but the hotel fairly quickly changed us to a room with space and sent up the roll-away after only one more phone call to request it.

"NO COLD WATER"
Two things that make my rating 2 stars for this stay. 1. Our water was 130 F on the cold and hot side. We could not shower at all and barely could brush our teeth the first night before we went out. There were no available rooms to switch too. After befriending the front desk it was admitted that many guest either had no hot water or no cold water. I was offered a free breakfast at the hotel which I had no use for. This problem is/was known to the hotel and they continue to rent rooms out. They have lost my business. When I called in the AM with the hopes that another room was available to use the shower, the front desk told me to purge the hot water out of the floor heater by running the cold water on the sink for 10-15 minutes and this may clear up the issue. I guess this hotel has no regard for the four year drought. Painfully, I let the water run for 10 minutes and we were able to take a shower (that was hot/cold constantly but not 130 F) and we had to let the cold water on the sink run continuously to do so. 2. The window was open 6" and was not operable thus letting all the city noises in all night.

Rented a room for a girls' weekend and loved the cool decor as well as the friendly service and the wine hour. It was a perfect fit for our needs. The bathroom was a little tight but we also had 4 girls in a room with two Queen size beds. I would definitely recommend for it's cool vibe and it's great location.

"Slept well in a good location."
Stayed one night in conjunction with going to a show. The beds and linens are very comfortable. Excellent location. The lobby was nicely set up for coffee in the morning , but it was extremely cold in the lobby.

"Would never stay here again...!!!"
It was disappointing at best. The hotel was old and chipped and in desperate need of more than some hip art to command the prices it does. The rooms were in a state of disrepair...2 of 3 I tried. The desk staff was helpful as possible but the Kimpton chain should take control. All of the 3 rooms were chipped and had a moldly smell. One of the rooms had such a foul odor that was intolerable. I get location, location, location...but this would be the last hotel I would spend $250 to stay in. In my second room the windows had chain link metal in the glass giving the impression of being in a prison. And if one could look through the chain, you could not because the dirty cloth window blind was broken. Does housekeeping and management not notice this. Sadly, I believe that when one pays in advance you get the least desirable rooms....my experience. I trust hotels.com...and if you really do survey the properties you sell...time to survey the Sir Francis Drake.

"Will stay again."
Pillows were not comfortable and the plumbing gave a smell from the bathroom but that's due to the age of the building so we forgave that issue. The rooms were very clean and detail was seen to.

"Rustic but no modern"

"Good hotel from which to explore San Francisco"
The Sir Francis Drake provided a convenient location along the cable-car route and within a few blocks of market street and other forms of public transportation. I enjoyed the blueberry muffins and bacon for breakfast, although some members of the restaurant staff provide better service than others. Overall, the staff of the hotel provided fantastic service and promptly resolved any issues.

"Disappointing"
The hotel room itself was my biggest issue. We booked a Queen Room, and checked in to find a full sized bed, rather than a Queen, in the room. When my husband complained at the front desk, they refused to see our issue, choosing instead to argue "but it IS a Queen Room". Call the room what you want, but if it's not a Queen sized bed, in my view, it's not a Queen room. My husband is 6'5", so this was not a minor thing. Also, we had to ask for them to bring more pillows, since there were only two thin pillows on the bed. Overall, a disappointment. Also, I realize that the hotel cannot help this, but the Union Square area in SF has gotten extremely dirty and unpleasant. I would not recommend.

It is, however, helpful to know which room number you stayed, but we also have rooms with king bed. I can certainly see that a guest who is 6'5" may want a bigger bed. As for Union Square, there is a major construction going on for a major brand retailer and it may seem much busier than usual, but the area still houses many of the world-class brands and great dining options to name a few. The hotel itself is charming, in a great location and the staff is superb. However, the rooms (and especially bathrooms) are tiny. Also, the bar closes every night at 11PM, which is a bit of an inconvenience when you are wanting to hang out without getting outside in the cold, windy weather of San Fran.

"Wedding dress shopping"
Sir Francis Drake Hotel is our "go to" hotel each time we visit SF. This time it provided a perfect setting for mom. aunt, and daughters shopping for a wedding dress. The hotel is steps from Union Square and very safe and friendly. It is like home to us.

"should have stayed elsewhere"
Deluxe King room the size of a snail shell. the bathroom is so small that you can't even change your mind in it. The chair at desk is broken/worn out and is an accedent waiting to happen. The check in clerk is very good and professional. The door man that checked our bags was great too. As for other staff we encountered, well not so much. There was suppose to be bath robes but none were in room. There is no frig, coffee maker or microwave and the TV is the size of a good computer screan. All in all not worth the expence.

"Disappointed in their customer service"
We had an unfortunate reason that forced us to make a last minute booking here. There was some confusion on the rooms, and the hotel was sold out. But instead of being helpful and accommodating, the staff was really rude. They acted annoyed that we were there, like we were inconveniencing them. When we asked for extra pillows and blankets (since one person was going to have to sleep on the floor because of the confusion) they acted as if we were completely being outrageous in our requests. it was late, everyone was tired, but the least we could expect was some HOSPITALITY when paying $250+ a night. I understand circumstances were not completely in their control, but if they could have been gracious about it, it would have gone a long way. After having to deal with 4 different staff members, only one woman was the least bit helpful or friendly. Overall, the staff just felt really unnecessarily rude, something I'm not used to in a Kimpton hotel.

"Can't say enough good things!"
I do not easily hand out top notch ratings for all levels, however, staying at the Sir Francis Drake was a treat for my daughter and me. After a less than desirable Uber drive to the hotel, the front desk clerk comped us for cocktails! The restaurant manager was most accommodating, getting us a table at the sold out Scala's Bistro. It's a not to be missed dining experience. The minor downsides were a bit of noise in the elevator area at night. We were in the 20th floor and the Starlight Room (club) was on 21st. But room was quiet. Also some "leftovers" beer bottles and cocktail glasses near elevator in the morning. Lobby was very chilly in the morning, making coffee an uncomfortable experience, but I'm from Florida so anything below 70° is cold for me. Concierge was friendly and enthusiastic about sights, sounds and smells of San Fran, complimentary wine hour with welcoming staff, bartenders and "beefeaters" all top notch. Wonderful hotel don't miss out.

"Short Getaway"
We had a three night stay in San Francisco and selected the Sir Francis Drake because of location and price compared to hotels with similar ratings. The hotel was lovely and we enjoyed what they called a jr. suite with a king size bed which was very spacious. Maneuvering through the City without a car or taxi was easy by walking, or using the hop on tour buses that are nearby. City buses and the BART are also in walking distance.

"Money doesn't buy you space"
Husband and I went for a weekend getaway. If you want to be in The center of union square, this is it! Room was small for what I paid, but clean. Cable car right when you walk out the front door was nice. Starlight room on the top floor offered a small dance floor but the view of the city is all around you. Overall nice stay, but expected more for my money.

"Memorable Bachelorette party"
Best bachelorette party ever at Sir Francis Drake! We had rented rooms for the girls to stay in and the General Manager and hotel staff - Raquel comped us with free bottle of champagne at the Starlight Room. They even held the cake for us in the kitchen fridge and when we were ready, they brought up the cake to the Starlight Room and served us the cake with our champagne. They hooked us up with a free table right in front of the dance floor too. The music was great and the staff was extremely friendly. Five star service! Thank you Sir Francis Drake for making the bachelorette and all the girls very happy with a memorable event!!!
