I booked a queen bed for our stay. The young man who who checked us in noticed my tall husband upgraded us to a king bed free of charge which was very nice. "Older, but nice"
Being an older hotel, the rooms are kind of small and cramped. Otherwise, a great place in a great location for business and touring.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hi John, The Drake is a 1928 historic building, and yes, we do have a room fit for a single traveler as well as much bigger rooms. If you do have a question about a room size, our staff is very happy to answer any questions you may have about the size. You're right about our location though, very convenient for all business and leisure travelers! Please visit us soon. Happy Holidays. Jim Gross, General Manager
"Good hotel, tight quarters, park nearby"
Good hotel overall, certainly in an impressive building, excellent location, rooms are quite small however, very limited counter / floor space in bathroom. We still enjoyed our stay. "A cautionary tale of property theft"
We were so excited to stay at the Sir Francis Drake over Thanksgiving weekend. Having formerly lived in SF visiting the property as a local, it would be the first time we would stay there as guests. I so want to write a good review because generally, our experience was good. However our stay was overshadowed by a theft. We were absolutely devastated […] and heart broken because my fiance's watch was stolen from our vehicle. My gift to him. A watch I searched a long time to find, and one that he loved. Not a very expensive watch -- but hugely sentimental (not to mention irreplaceable since it has since been discontinued). We checked in on Friday night during the tree lighting at Union Square and it was total chaos. In our rush to remove all our luggage from the car before handing it over to valet, in the darkness of an unfamiliar rental car we missed grabbing the watch from the center console. By the time we retrieved the car it was gone. :( Adding insult to injury, was paying the $200 in parking fees for 3 days. Ouch! Solace for our grief? An incident report and a free cocktail...and an unfortunate lesson of loss prevention. If you do stay there and you park a vehicle, remove every last item of any value to you. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Frank, Thank you for a wonderful 5-star review! The Drake is a 1928 historic building that has gone through a major renovation, yet keeping the old-world charm. "Noisy and old"
I was there for only 3 days, had trouble sleeping because the room was very noisy, the windows are old, as the rest of the hotel and I could hear everything from the streets, also from the hall. The room was very small and dated, looks good in pictures but not nice in person. The bathroom was tiny and had little to no extras. The had a sign on top of […] the toilet that says you can request whatever you need from the front desk, but only a small bottle of lotion is in the bathroom and in the shower there are big bottles attached to the wall. It didn't feel fancy or comfortable. For that price I'll stay somewhere else next time. The only plus is the location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Wonderful historic feel from the decor in the room to the gorgeous architecture in the lobby and other common areas. All services were excellent; very courteous staff. Rooms were a little small, but expected it with a boutique/historical building. Only downside was the slightly uncomfortable beds and pillows. Mattress was either too firm, or just old! "The service sucked!"
The hotel is beautiful and in a good location. However, the service was absolutely horrible. When we arrived, we were rushed out of our vehicle. We had to change our clothes to go to a Padres vs. Giants baseball game shortly after arrival, and discovered our luggage unattended and still sitting on the street 25 minutes after valet unloaded it from our […] car. So, my husband brought the luggage up himself. We had to call Guest Services three times over a six-hour span regarding our television remote, and it still did not work properly after that. We had to get out of bed and stand within 5 feet of the t.v. for it to work. We definitely will NEVER stay at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We chose San Francisco as the city in which to celebrate a birthday as the five of us had never been there except for connecting flights at the airport. We were thrilled with the hotel and location in which we chose to stay. The Sir Francis Drake is a lovely boutique hotel in a superb location. "Charming Old Hotel,Convenient Location, So-So View"
This is a classic hotel in downtown San Francisco, it is located in the heart of Union Square. The rooms are small given that it is a very very old hotel. It was remodeled and is charming. The views advertised are a little miss-leading. We paid for an upgraded room on a higher floor with a view, but the views outside of our window is so so. If you can […] manage to get a view of the Union Square side, do that. But stay on 18th or 19th floor, because there's night club on the 21st floor, and you'd not be able to get a quiet night of sleep on the 20th floor with Union Square side view. I'd also recommend that you pay a little extra to get an upgrade room , which is on a higher floor, less noisy and a tad bigger. As of Sept 2014, there's extensive construction on the Union Square side. Breakfast room delivery was excellent! Staff is helpful and professional. I'd stay here again purely for the location, the breakfast and the shower, which was incredibly refreshing! The bed is very comfortable as well. Overall a solid 4 star hotel, but if you are expecting a "wow" view and a huge room, you'd be disappointed. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Nice Historic Hotel in San Francisco"
The location of the Sir Francis Drake is very convenient to mass transit including the cable. Shopping is also convenient, Macy's is just across the square. Within a ten minute walk of the hotel is a great coffee, breakfast & lunch place called "The Grove." which the hotel recommended. A longer walk is the Asian Art Museum which is worth a few hours […] and should not be missed. I would avoid the place too close to the hotel where things are fairly mediocre. The attentive service and historic building at the hotel were both great. A lot of great service. "Too small for comfort"
If you like a little space, this hotel is not for you. The room was so small and the bathroom literally only had a 2 x 2 area to stand. The toilet, tub and very tiny sink were all up on each other. It was quite challenging to apply make up. There's no counter space. I had to utilize the toilet lid and place my stuff on top of it. Ugh! The hotel is […] definitely historic and the rooms are filled with unique and beautiful furnishings, but in my opinion that did not make up for the lack of square footage. Overall, the area is boarder line seedy unless you head toward the shopping area where Macys is located. The hotel was overpriced and I will not return. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The staff are amazing, the room needs work."
This hotel was in an amazing location in Union Square, easy to get to everything we wanted to do in the area. However, our room (#333) was very small. The closet was in a dark corner of the room and had no light so we couldn't use it. Luckily there was plenty of dresser space. The bed was strangely angled so our feet were higher than our heads. But […] on the plus side, the room was very clean and the hotel offered a $10 coupon to the hotel's dining if you decided not to have your hotel room cleaned for a day. They allowed this to happen twice during our stay. I liked this because it saved resources and we didn't have a need for new towels or sheets after the first day. I would definitely stay at this hotel again for the staff, the dining and the location but I would ask for a larger room with plenty of light. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice historic hotel, unbeatable location"
We loved the Sir Francis Drake. The staff is wonderful and the rooms are funky and not over restored. By necessity bathrooms are small. I wish I had been able to stay more than one night. Location was awesome and would have been amazing if I had been travleing for leisure. The only downfalls are that […] parking was super expensive ($55 for one night) and it was kind of loud as I was tryiong to sleep (that is what yiou get when you stay in Union Square though). Loved it and would definately stay again! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
