"Good hotel but other than history nothing special."
Hotel was adequate for my needs. I didn't require a lot of service. Good location.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Christopher, I can appreciate that you enjoyed our hotel and its location. Although, we would love the opportunity to 'wow' you on your next visit to the Drake! Hope to see you soon. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Cute hotel, close to everything, older"
The hotel staff was friendly and very helpful. The location of this hotel is perfect, walking distance to shops, restaurants, shows, etc! The hotel room (queen-deluxe) is small and older, but clean. Our bed wasn't very comfortable and squeaky. The noise from Union Square can get loud on the weekends so if you're looking for quiet and serene, this is […] not the hotel for you. But our stay was nice and I would recommend for a night or two especially if you are on foot and want to be close to everything. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Lacey, I'm glad to hear that you found our staff friendly and helpful! I agree, our location speaks for itself and something is always happening for some weekend fun! There are quieter rooms that faces away from the streets and the Union Square so you may want to try those rooms on your next visit. Thanks! Jim Gross, General Manager
"Don't get the room right outside elevator! Noisy N"
We were given room 1715 literally outside the elevator and it was awful. The noise was loud and when I told the front desk when we checked out they didn't seem to care. It is a beautiful hotel but if there was another room that would have been better.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, I appreciate your comment. I am disappointed to learn that you didn't feel that our front desk cared. Please know that we have bigger rooms and we could have moved you to a different room if/when we had availability. We hope that you'll give us another opportunity to serve you. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Horrible service at the Sir Francis Drake"
Over priced, rude customer service, valet is horrible. Don't stay on 20th floor if light sleeper or have an early event the next morning( they didn't tell us about the nightclub on 21st floor). Valet workers were rude and unhelpful. I recommend they don't be a host hotel for events in the city if they can't handle guest with respect and courtesy. Will […] not stay here again or recommend to anyone. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, I am utterly disappointed to see your review. Although, the rate we offer during the city wide events are very compatible (we do all comp set research) to other hotels, but I am very upset to hear that you found our customer service rude and horrible. What could we have done to make your stay better one? I always welcome your feedback. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager

"The smallest room imaginable"
It was a lovely hotel. Very classic and the service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I was a little suprised when I got to my room. It was soooooo small. I actually got out of bed and was in the bathroom. No extra steps, in the bathroom. And there was no room for a trash can in the bathroom. That was irritating because I had to […] carry my trash into the room. It wasn't that far, but it was inconvenient. Had I paid full price for the room, I would have been very unhappy. It was nice to say I stayed there, but I don't think I would do it again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We hope you'll want to try our bigger rooms. Thank you for your review. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager

Great location in Union Square. Love the decor, very fun! The Bar on the top floor has great views of the city. Nice lobby!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Kasey, I agree, our location is so close to everything you can possibly wish for when visiting San Francisco! Decent hotel, just disappointed a room was almost $300 a night and still got charged $67/day for valet....Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, Thank you for staying at the Drake! I'm sorry to hear that you were not pleased with the valet charge. Please know that our parking along with many other hotels in the same areas are managed by the same valet parking company and the fee is very similar to what other hotels charge. The city of San Francisco is very compact and it's often challenging to find a parking spot and the parking rate may be higher than some other cities. It is definitely better explored on foot as well. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
Great location, but if you are staying on the weekend it can be extremely noisy. My room was on the 19th floor (two floors under the Starlight room) and the music/bass was incredibly loud until 2 am. Staff gave a room credit, which was nice but doesn't quite make up for the sleep deprivation. If you are on a lower floor, this hotel is really fun and […] in a great location. "Sir Francis Drake Review"
My fiance and I went for an over night stay at Sir Francis Drake this Saturday. This particular overnight was a getaway-from-the-kids type of trip, which only happens for us once in a blue moon and we had wanted it to be special. Our stay got off to a bit of rough start. The original reservation was for a grand king room. I called a week in advance to […] confirm my reservations and was assured everything was good to go.Upon arrival,we were informed the grand room we had booked was not available and they were moving us to a deluxe room and would give us complementary breakfast for the inconvenience.I informed them we already had planned to go to brunch in the Starlight Room and asked if they would be able to take care of that for us instead,to which they agreed. So they were trying to make good on this.I had read similar complaints on Yelp before we booked here, which is exactly why I CALLED A WEEK IN ADVANCE!The first impression of the room wasn't great. On top of the already smaller room we were given, there was a pull out cot in the middle of the room when we got there, why it was there I have no idea. But we called down and someone came up fairly quickly and removed it for us.The view wasn't spectacular and the bathroom was pretty cramped. But,being that they put us in a corner room we decided to make the best of a little disappointment.Overall the hotel is nice.I dig the old world charm and the staff was nice. "Loved the Sir Francis Drake"
Loved the Sir Francis Drake. Only negative was the street noise was too loud. We were on the 14th floor in a corner room. The view was great - we could see up Sutter and Powell streets. But we could hear the traffic noise at night, even with a white noise machine. Other than that, we loved the hotel. Great location in Union Square, very friendly staff, […] nice coffee reception in lobby each morning, and complementary wine hour at 5pm. Room was small but comfortable, and had a nice size TV. Wonderful old hotel, right at union station, cable car stop is right there. Centrally located especially if you like to walk. Everyone at the hotel was very helpful, would definitely stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

I book this hotel for my husband birthday we checked in a little late to go to the lounge startligt room in the same hotel, the front desk person told us that they already did last called when at 12:am when the place closed at 1:30am I was not satisfied at all won't be staying here ever again my experience was not goodGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Dina, I am so disappointed that we couldn't deliver what you would have expected out of the Drake. You are absolutely right; checking at midnight, you should have been able to enjoy the last 1.5 hrs at the Starlight room. I'll have to find out why you were told that you couldn't go unless there was a private party or the lounge has already exceeded a max number of people which happens time to time. Hopefully, you'll give us another opportunity and you'll get to experience the Drake and the Starlight Room. Happy New Year! Jim Gross, General Manager
"Not a do over."
The hotel is right in town so there is no parking. We were charged $60+ for one night. Since our stay was to be short we really didn't want to take all of our luggage out of the car, but we were advised to take EVERYTHING. We were there on Christmas, so practically nothing was open. In a return trip.....this hotel would not be a do over.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello Guest, Thank you for visiting the Drake! You are right, we are conveniently located to all major shopping, dining and tourist attraction. Parking rate is very compatible/similar to other hotels in the same vicinity and the parking spaces are hard to come by. It is our policy to advise all parkers to take all of their belongings just as a security measure. We appreciate your understanding! Happy New Year. Jim Gross, General Manager
"Sir Francis Drake"
This Hotel is in the busiest shopping district in SF. During the Holiday season it is a madhouse around this location. Small rooms, but didn't expect anything more, the hotel is around 100 years old. Beautiful architecture inside and outside the property, and close to many restaurants and other attractions. Chinatown is right around the corner.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Disappointing- not for families"
I always loved Kimpton hotels and thought that it was a great location to take my kids to SF for a holiday night, taking in the Union Square festivities. The bathroom was tiny, the window treatments were broken and dirty. The worst part of the stay was the look my kids faces (aged 4 & 8) on Christmas Eve morning excited for the advertised hot cocoa […] bar that ends at 9am. We arrived at 8:45, cocoa gone, we were told by another guest that they were getting more cocoa. They had all the toppings out, sprinkles, peppermint, etc, but no cocoa. We sat and waited for more cocoa. Finally we realized at 9:03 they were cleaning up and putting everything away. I asked the gentleman cleaning it up about getting cocoa for the kids, he said, 'it ended at 9am." I told him we'd been waiting since 8:45 for a refill and he said there was plenty of coffee left...for 2 little kids?? Frustrating. I guess they should tell you that the cocoa bar is "while supplies last." No offer to accommodate or help, even to apologize. He was obviously the grinch of the hotel. On a better note, Elgin at the front desk was the best part of the whole stay. He embodies the Kimpton standard I remember. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Let down for a Kimpton"
The reason for my low ratings is that for the price we paid ($234 for the night) I was surprised that there was not a coffee maker in the room, such a simple thing I know but the convenience of that while getting ready in the morning without having to order room service or go downstairs to the lobby is huge to me. Also the windows are very old and do […] not keep any sound or cold air out so we were glad we brought ear plugs! The last thing was there was a strong sulphur smell in the room, we knew the hotel was very old but seems they could have managed to do something about that. We really like Kimpton and have stayed in others but I dont think we will back to this one. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Well kept older hotel. My room on 12th floor had what appeared to be original, single pane window which allowed a lot of street noise through....had to wear ear plugs to sleep well.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A cautionary tale of property theft"
We were so excited to stay at the Sir Francis Drake over Thanksgiving weekend. Having formerly lived in SF visiting the property as a local, it would be the first time we would stay there as guests. I so want to write a good review because generally, our experience was good. However our stay was overshadowed by a theft. We were absolutely devastated […] and heart broken because my fiance's watch was stolen from our vehicle. My gift to him. A watch I searched a long time to find, and one that he loved. Not a very expensive watch -- but hugely sentimental (not to mention irreplaceable since it has since been discontinued). We checked in on Friday night during the tree lighting at Union Square and it was total chaos. In our rush to remove all our luggage from the car before handing it over to valet, in the darkness of an unfamiliar rental car we missed grabbing the watch from the center console. By the time we retrieved the car it was gone. :( Adding insult to injury, was paying the $200 in parking fees for 3 days. Ouch! Solace for our grief? An incident report and a free cocktail...and an unfortunate lesson of loss prevention. If you do stay there and you park a vehicle, remove every last item of any value to you. "Noisy and old"
I was there for only 3 days, had trouble sleeping because the room was very noisy, the windows are old, as the rest of the hotel and I could hear everything from the streets, also from the hall. The room was very small and dated, looks good in pictures but not nice in person. The bathroom was tiny and had little to no extras. The had a sign on top of […] the toilet that says you can request whatever you need from the front desk, but only a small bottle of lotion is in the bathroom and in the shower there are big bottles attached to the wall. It didn't feel fancy or comfortable. For that price I'll stay somewhere else next time. The only plus is the location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
