"DO NOT ACCEPT A ROOM ON THE 20TH floor!!!!!!!!!!"
20th floor of this hotel is below the club at this hotel and we were kept up all night to 1:30 a.m. that is, DO NOT EXCEPT A ROOM ON THE 20TH floor PERIOD!Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, I'm sorry to hear that the sound from the Starlight Room kept you up until 1:30am. Please know that we are in a process of coming up with better sound proofing to lessen the amount of noise traveling down from the Starlight Room. In the meantime, please know that we'd be more than happy to move you to a different room whenever we have availability and we do have a set of ear plugs upon request from our housekeeping department. We hope that you'll give us another chance to serve you. Happy New Year! Jim Gross, General Manager

"Traffic is LOUD at this hotel."
Major noise, no matter what floor you are on.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, Happy New Year! Thank you for choosing the Drake for your recent trip. I certainly understand that you found the traffic noise loud as we are a block away from Union Square and other major shopping, dining areas. Especially during the holiday season, our surrounding neighborhood becomes even more alive with all the holiday festivities. I'm sorry to hear that we weren't quite your cup of tea, but hopefully you'll give us another opportunity to serve you. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Did not deliver what it promised!"
I made this reservation based on a friend's recommendation. After reading the description of the room, I went for it: Historic Queen Room with City View in Downtown San Francisco with the glamour of the past but the convenience and the comfort of the present. Reading further about the hotel, I loved the idea of its group and I even joined the loyalty […] program. I was pleasantly surprised with the location and the lobby but not with the check-in process where the person made sure to make me feel that he is in a rush and he did not even have time to enter my loyalty program number in the reservation since I am not getting any perks anyhow (to be fair, it was new year's eve and the hotel was sold out; but then, I did pay $$$$ for a one night stay in a room...a very small room to discover later), I had to wait for no less than 5 minutes for the elevator, and then be shocked that a city view means seeing the Walgreens sign out of my window! The room was unique in design, clean, and the bed was comfortable. The day I checked out was much easier where the housekeeping staff made enough noise in the hallway to wake me up (yes, that is sarcasm!) and the gentleman who checked me out was very nice (this is true!). "A nice getaway in SF"
Great location and a very comfortable hotelGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear timothy, Thank you for choosing us on your getaway! I'm glad that you found our hotel very comfortable (which I agree!) and enjoyed our location. We hope to see you again this year. Happy New Year! Jim Gross, General Manager
This classic SFO hotel was remodeled in past few years and is very clean, classic, and nostalgic. What really impressed us, though, was the outstanding personal service and attention to us. The staff really made an effort to demonstrate appreciation for our visit over Christmas 2014. The place was alive with guests and staff - we had a blast.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Bob, Wow, thanks for letting me know that you had a wonderful stay with us! What a way to start a new year for both of us! Our location, Union Square becomes even more alive with all of the holiday decorations and i couldn't be happier to know that you had a blast! We hope to see you soon for another great stay! "Great place to stay in Union Square"
Stayed here for the weekend with a girlfriend. It was close to shopping and restaurants. It's also a short walk to Chinatown and North Beach. The hotel has a beautiful lobby with an old world feel. The happy hour was great and just what we needed after a long day of shopping. The rooms were nice except the bathroom was small; It had no counter space […] to put your things. The beds were very soft and comfy. I'd stay here again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Leslie, It's nice to know that you had a wonderful weekend getaway! The location speaks for itself as you discovered and glad that you ventured out to different places! The Drake is a 1928 historic building that many may appreciate and it sounds you certainly did. Very typical of that era, the bathrooms are smaller than what you find in more modern hotels, but we are always coming up new ideas to make the best use out of our bathroom. We sincerely hope that you'll visit us soon for another wonderful stay! Thanks and Happy Holidays! Jim Gross, General Manager
"Nice but small room"
Beautiful place, very nice hotel. Only complaint is that room was TINY.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very bad experience."
The lock of the door is broken and I couldn't get to my room. They spend couple hours working on it without a fix before they move me to another room. The room is okay with a tiny restroom and a tiny toiletGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Guest, I can certainly feel your frustration, but I'm glad that we were able to move you to another room. Broken lock is definitely NOT a usual occurrence and if there is ever any problem, our team can usually fix it in no time. We really hope that you can give us another opportunity and show you a real hospitality on your next stay. Happy Holidays, Jim Gross, General Manager
Generally a nice hotel -- although some amenities could be improved such as providing coffee pot in room, a real wet bar in mini refrig, more drinking glasses and soap in bathroom. Other than a tiny bar of soap and tiny body lotion -- nothing else is provided. However due to its central location I would most likely return.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear mona, I welcome everyone's opinions and suggestions. Although, it is hard to accommodate every different recommendation, but we are always trying to improve on our guest experiences! As for the coffee pot, we offer a complimentary morning coffee/tea/hot chocolate service in the lobby; mini refrig is available upon request (first come, first serve) On your next trip, please give the front desk a ring to request both coffee maker and a mini refrig in advance and we'd be more than happy to place them in your room. I appreciate that you plan to return! Happy Holidays, Jim Gross, General Manager

"Disappointing- not for families"
I always loved Kimpton hotels and thought that it was a great location to take my kids to SF for a holiday night, taking in the Union Square festivities. The bathroom was tiny, the window treatments were broken and dirty. The worst part of the stay was the look my kids faces (aged 4 & 8) on Christmas Eve morning excited for the advertised hot cocoa […] bar that ends at 9am. We arrived at 8:45, cocoa gone, we were told by another guest that they were getting more cocoa. They had all the toppings out, sprinkles, peppermint, etc, but no cocoa. We sat and waited for more cocoa. Finally we realized at 9:03 they were cleaning up and putting everything away. I asked the gentleman cleaning it up about getting cocoa for the kids, he said, 'it ended at 9am." I told him we'd been waiting since 8:45 for a refill and he said there was plenty of coffee left...for 2 little kids?? Frustrating. I guess they should tell you that the cocoa bar is "while supplies last." No offer to accommodate or help, even to apologize. He was obviously the grinch of the hotel. On a better note, Elgin at the front desk was the best part of the whole stay. He embodies the Kimpton standard I remember. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel for holidays!"
We had 6 of us, 3 rooms. Hotel staff nicely accommodated us on same floor, nice rooms even with fully booked hotel. Beautiful hotel decorated for holidays. Pretty even when not if you like the older style. If you like new and modern, try another place. This place has TONS of character! 3 doormen are awesome and work hard. Front desk staff was great, […] and the cleaning crew was too. Also valets....basically all who we dealt with were great. Very busy time, lots of traffic, people etc. Best way to get anywhere at this time of year was taxi or walk but that was fine with us. Cable cars ridiculous and not available unless you waited hours...then they broke down. Again, great hotel, great location, (rooms not super roomy but we managed to enjoy our downtime just fine!) Classic King rooms....double occupancy. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Let down for a Kimpton"
The reason for my low ratings is that for the price we paid ($234 for the night) I was surprised that there was not a coffee maker in the room, such a simple thing I know but the convenience of that while getting ready in the morning without having to order room service or go downstairs to the lobby is huge to me. Also the windows are very old and do […] not keep any sound or cold air out so we were glad we brought ear plugs! The last thing was there was a strong sulphur smell in the room, we knew the hotel was very old but seems they could have managed to do something about that. We really like Kimpton and have stayed in others but I dont think we will back to this one. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Absolutely will stay again!"
This was my second time in 2 months and 3rd time overall staying at the Sir Francis Drake and I will absolutely stay there the next time I travel. Everyone from the valet to the concierge are warm and friendly and extremely helpful, almost like talking with old friends. I had a beautiful room that was spotless and the beds and pillows were comfortable. […] The counter space in the bathroom is non-existent, but that may be my only complaint. My party traveled to see a show and they handled our transportation to and from. The concierge's recommendation for dinner and drinks couldn't have been better! We even hit the Starlight Room and danced until morning. I highly recommend it. Next time I plan on making the wine tasting from 5 to 6. Also the location couldn't be better. It's right next to Union Square. The shopping is fantastic. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice place but load."
Well kept older hotel. My room on 12th floor had what appeared to be original, single pane window which allowed a lot of street noise through....had to wear ear plugs to sleep well.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear John, The Drake is a 1928 historic building and indeed, it's well-kept and has gone through a major renovation in 2011. There certainly are some original feature we kept to keep the 'old-world'charm. I'm sorry that the street noise kept you up but hopefully, you slept well with ear plugs. "Nickled and dimed"
Lovely lobby, great location. Room tiny, with no amenities. Couldn't even pump out enough shampoo or body wash (even after 10 pumps) to properly shower. No in-room coffee, microwave or mini fridge, but plenty of overpriced purchase options. It was a little insulting. Staff pleasant and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review

"A cautionary tale of property theft"
We were so excited to stay at the Sir Francis Drake over Thanksgiving weekend. Having formerly lived in SF visiting the property as a local, it would be the first time we would stay there as guests. I so want to write a good review because generally, our experience was good. However our stay was overshadowed by a theft. We were absolutely devastated […] and heart broken because my fiance's watch was stolen from our vehicle. My gift to him. A watch I searched a long time to find, and one that he loved. Not a very expensive watch -- but hugely sentimental (not to mention irreplaceable since it has since been discontinued). We checked in on Friday night during the tree lighting at Union Square and it was total chaos. In our rush to remove all our luggage from the car before handing it over to valet, in the darkness of an unfamiliar rental car we missed grabbing the watch from the center console. By the time we retrieved the car it was gone. :( Adding insult to injury, was paying the $200 in parking fees for 3 days. Ouch! Solace for our grief? An incident report and a free cocktail...and an unfortunate lesson of loss prevention. If you do stay there and you park a vehicle, remove every last item of any value to you. "Stunning historic hotel lacking comfort"
Don't get me wrong -- this is a GORGEOUS hotel! Beautiful high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, giant mirrors everywhere...it's definitely worth seeing. Also, the location was terrific -- right next to a cable car stop, right by Union Square, etc. But as we all know, looks can be deceiving! When it came to service and comfort, this hotel was just not up […] to par. The $62/night valet completely ignored us upon arrival. Then, when we got to our small room by the elevator, I took a shower that turned ice cold about 5 minutes in (you know, just in time to get my hair full of shampoo so I was trapped in this deep freeze until I could get the shampoo out). When I told the front desk about it, they simply said they had been having trouble with the hot water and were trying to get it fixed. First, WHY ON EARTH wouldn't you say something when we checked in?? Just a little "We're very sorry, but we're having some trouble with the hot water. Would you like to maybe have a drink at the bar while we fix it?" I guess they were just hoping no one would take a shower right then? I don't know. It was weird. And after I froze my butt off, they weren't particularly apologetic and didn't offer anything to correct it. I find this pretty unforgivable for a hotel of this quality and price. And the bed was like sleeping on plywood -- just so so so hard. WHY?! So for rather a lot of money, I got ignored by valet, an ice cold shower, and an uncomfortable bed. BUT the bar and bartender (Dan) were nice! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Noisy and old"
I was there for only 3 days, had trouble sleeping because the room was very noisy, the windows are old, as the rest of the hotel and I could hear everything from the streets, also from the hall. The room was very small and dated, looks good in pictures but not nice in person. The bathroom was tiny and had little to no extras. The had a sign on top of […] the toilet that says you can request whatever you need from the front desk, but only a small bottle of lotion is in the bathroom and in the shower there are big bottles attached to the wall. It didn't feel fancy or comfortable. For that price I'll stay somewhere else next time. The only plus is the location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
