Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Gary, Thanks for pointing this out. We would have loved to move you to another room if there was any room available. I will relate your message to my Dir of Housekeeping to let his team know to do a thorough cleaning on every room. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
Nice hotel. Great location but he room was small and cramped.Genuine Expedia guest review

Please note that there are several types of rooms available at our hotel; smaller "historic queen" to bigger rooms that provide enough space for a family. Hope to see you at the Drake soon.

"Great Location - Old Classic Hotel"
It's an old hotel, rooms are small and walls are thin, but you can't beat the location at Union Square. Friends we were traveling with had to be moved in the middle of night because of crying babies in the adjacent room. My room was fine. Bed's are very comfortable, linens are high quality, but bathrooms are small and tight as you might expect from […] an old hotel. Overall, it's a perfectly nice hotel in a great location. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Thanks for taking your time to post your review. What you might have not known is that we were built in 1928 and is recognized as one of the historic buildings in SF. I agree that our location can't be beat; everything is so close and very convenient. I'm certainly glad to know that our staff was able to move your friends away from crying babies! Great stay. Need to be on higher floor to avoid excessive street noise. The doorman was wonderful, every hotelier needs to have him do the training on courtesy, smiling, and overall graciousness.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Thanks for your comment. Our doorman, (aka Beefeater) is the face of the Drake and is always eager to assist, not only our guests but tourists who are just walking by. I'm glad to know your "Beefeater" encounter! Hope to see you soon. Jim Gross, General Manager
"A grande old dame but tarnished."
This was a pleasant enough hotel, but the room size was tiny. They provided a single bath towel. Most of the staff were friendly, but a few were a little terse. It is architecturally interesting but in need of upgrading.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear PM: I appreciate your comment. Thank you for recognizing the Drake’s architectural beauty. This building has some history for sure. It was built in 1928 and is one of the historic buildings in SF. Many guests seem to be awed by its architectural beauty. Also, please know that we have gone through $10 mil renovation to update our guest rooms as well as meeting spaces while keeping its old-world charm.
We booked two rooms for a girl's weekend. Front desk staff were very welcoming and pleasant. They gladly arranged to put us in adjoining rooms, so that we could be close to each other. The lobby was inviting, complimentary fresh water and coffee was available for guests in the lobby. Rooms were decorated very nicely. The bathrooms were a bit small, […] but very nice and clean. We had breakfast at Scala's next door to the hotel and it was very good and staff were wonderful. All in all it was a great experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Stella: It sounds like you and your friends had a fun Girl’s Weekend! I’m glad that my staff found adjoining rooms which probably made you and your life a bit easier during your stay. Scala’s always had delicious food, but we added few new items on the menu for you to enjoy on your next visit to the Drake! Did you know that in addition to our complimentary water and coffee services, we have WINE hour! See you soon at the Drake.
"Wonderful Hotel in a fabulous location"
I very much enjoyed staying at "The Drake" - got there way early and my room was ready anyway. I had a beautiful room on the 5th floor - not too noisy and great view! My only complaint would be that the room is a little small - but since I was by myself it worked out - for two people I would upgrade to the "grand" rooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Thank you for writing a review. I'm glad to know that you enjoyed your stay and the view you had from our 5th floor room. Yes, we have rooms that are more suitable for a single traveler, but also have many rooms that are much bigger as you mentioned. Our location is definitely one of the best as it is within walking distance to so many places! Hope to welcome you back at the Drake soon. Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager
Historic hotel conveniently located close to restaurants, public transportation and shopping. There were five places to eat breakfast within a block's walk. The staff was friendly and helpful. Visit the Starlight Lounge on the top floor during your stay. It has a beautiful view of the city at night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Kenjackm, I appreciate your review! Yes, indeed, the Drake is one of the historic buildings in the city of SF. Can you believe that it was built in 1928? Our location can't be beat as many places are within your walking distance, or if you wish, a hop away on a worldly-famous Cable Car! Hope you were able to enjoy breakfast at Scala's. If you missed it, hope you get to enjoy on your next visit. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager
"Nice vacation hotel"
The Francis Drake is a very old building with moderately sized rooms and super small bathrooms. I travel to the Bay Area often for travel and found the building a little noisier than I like. The parking, though the steepest rate I have come across to date the service was some of the fastest.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Michael, Thanks for your candid comment. Our building was built in 1928, so it is an old building; however, it is also recognized as one of the historical buildings in SF. There are many classic details of the old hotel throughout the hotel. Our room sizes vary; "historic" queen that is perfect for a single traveler to much bigger suites... Our parking is managed by the 3rd party company who also operates at other hotels in the same vicinity and our rate is very compatible. On your next visit, please do ask for a room facing away from the street. Some guests find them quieter. Please visit us soon.
"Great place to stay"

Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear ben, Thanks for a short, yet very precise comment! I agree, La'Ban, one of our 3 Beefeaters not only is an amazing guy, but got an amazing smile as well! Please visit us again soon! Jim Gross, General Manager
"Charming, Delicious and Centrally Located"
Overall it was great. I love the decor, spacious and charming lobby with good morning coffee. The onsite restaurant is superb -- delicious breakfast with many healthy choices, and good for dinner as well. Service is particularly friendly and thoughtful. You are right at Union Square and can see and hear the streetcar. The only problem was confusion […] in communication about if and when the Starlight Lounge could be accessed. I invited friends from elsewhere to join me, based on staff's directions, only to later find--two nights in a row-- from the host at the lounge itself that we could not access it due to private events. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Suzanne, Thank you for posting your comment. It is hard not to appreciate the old-world charm which the Drake offers. It is recognized as one of the historic buildings in SF and it was built in 1928! I'm glad that you enjoyed our morning coffee service in a lobby; were you able to also enjoy the wine hour? I'm disappointed to learn that our staff didn't properly inform you about the private events. Although, most of the time, the Starlight Room is open to public, there are those few times that it's closed to public due to private events. I will certainly communicate this to my staff during our next meeting. Hope to welcome you back soon. Jim Gross, General Manager
We had to extend our stay do to San francisco flight crash and previously were at Ritz for 5 nights and Drake in comparison had small dingy old rooms n bathrooms and not so clean bath tub.The only good point is hotel location.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to Union Square"
It's a great place to stay for a romantic getaway, overlooking Union Square. The rooms were big (we got King Grand) and the concierge was extremely helpful. We had a problem with the first room that they gave us, which was not cleaned and ready, but they moved us to another room and took care of it right away. It is definitely on the pricey side, but […] I think you are getting what you pay for. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Beautiful hotel. TINY room amd bathroom. Hardly any room to walk inside our room. Clean. Good decor and very modern. No coffee maker in room was annoying. Great for one night but would not stay consecutive nights in such cramped quarters for this high price with so many other hotels to choose from.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historical landmark!"
First off let me say this hotel is beautiful! The lobby maintains is still all original from the 1920's when it was first completed. I instantly felt transformed back in time every time I walked through the lobby. It's stunning! Newer hotels just can't compare to the opulence of this hotel! Hotel staff was very accommodating, as expected for an upscale […] hotel. The daily complimentary wine tasting in one of the ballrooms was a nice perk. While the lobby is original, the guest rooms were recently renovated (it was much needed from what I understand). We stayed in the deluxe room, which was roomy and nicely designed. Our friends however, stayed in a standard room which was a bit on the small size. The location is great. Less than 100 yards to Union Square. Dozens of restaurants and bars nearby. A Powell St. cable car stop is just outside the hotel. A Muni, BART, and bus stops are very close by. A perfect location if you plan to use public transportation. Overall, the hotel is absolutely stunning! The staff is very friendly as well. My only complaint is the standard rooms, while not extremely small, feel a bit cramped Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Will, Thank you for your review. I see that you have the eyes for an appreciation for a beautiful historical building. This building was built in 1928 and it is officially recognized as one of the historical buildings in SF. We wanted to keep the old-world charm when we went through major guestroom renovation in 2011, most recently our meeting rooms. Smaller rooms come with some of the historical buildings but there are several types of rooms available at the Drake, as you already know. Our location is so perfect, walking distance to several tourist attractions, not to mention, cable car is all along Powell st. and BART station is few blocks down the hill. Hope you were able to take advantage of our location while enjoying the classic beauty of our hotel after a day full of activities and events! Please visit us soon.
It was very nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Wonderful place to stay for a vacation in SF. The lobby bar is great to grab a cocktail before heading out for the evening. The Beefeater bellmen are very helpful and knowledgable. I think they act as concierges since there wasn't one staffed at the concierge desk.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Thanks for staying at the Drake! Our Beefeaters (there are 3 of them!), each very unique, are our "spokesperson" so-to-speak. They are not only busy assisting our guests, but other tourists who walk by our front entrance. Bar Drake is a popular spot, not only for our guests, but others as well. I'm glad that you were able to taste what our mixologist can create! Please visit us soon.
I love the Drake. It is a nostalgic place for me since it was the 1st place I ever stayed in San Francisco. I love the Starlight Room. The place has a historical charm and the rooms are so fun w their different decors.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
""Could be better...""
Lobby looks good, as well as room. Other than that, quite noisy and room is pretty small. You can clearly overheard people talking in next room. And music from the very top floor. Location is right on the spot though.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Asiana, I appreciate your candid comment. Our location is definitely one of the most convenient if you are here to explore what SF has to offer. The Drake definitely sits in the middle of hustle and bustle. There is our lounge, Starlight Room on the 21st floor and we are getting a better sound proof system so that the noise won't carry down to our floors below. Please visit us soon.
Overall this was a great hotel. The only downside was that the bathroom was really small.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Gorgeous historic hotel and the PERFECT location"
The Sir Francis Drake is a gorgeous historic hotel in a perfect location in SF. You're within walking distance of numerous places, including the park, shopping, and Chinatown. You couldn't ask for friendlier staff either. I would recommend it to anyone!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Awesome location, nice rooms... Old noisy hotel"
Stayed here for five nights for a conference. The location was perfect. The rooms were gorgeously decorated but the soundproofing was awful given how old the walls were. From several floors below you could hear the music from the starlight lounge on the 21st floor. Street noise was unavoidable too... So was any noise outside in the hallways. Very loud. […] And after 8pm on most nights the hotel lobby and starlight lounge became a hotspot for 40+ year olds looking to get their groove on. Not what I expected for a kimpton. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Hello, Great to know that you had a great time! Hope you took advantage of our location and hit all those stores within the vicinity! Agree, our location can't be beat! Hope to see you back at the Drake on your next trip to SF!
You are paying for location and the fabulously helpful staff. We went to SF on a short family vacation so we stayed here because of the location, the room had to queen beds instead of full beds, and I read that the hotel had been recently redone. The work out room is small but adequate. The actual rooms are really small. We tried to put two adults and […] two kids in one room and there was hardly space to move around. The bathroom is clean but also tiny and without ventilation. The beds weren't very comfortable, either - they don't hold a candle to the "heavenly beds" of competitors. Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Holly, I appreciate your comment. Staff at the Drake is all helpful and always eager to help our guests. Our location...needless to say, it is one of the best in the city when you are visiting SF. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't feel our beds were comfortable. Actually, many of our guests rave how comfortable they are. There are bigger rooms available that are more suitable when you are travelling with more than 2 people. Our reservation and front desk agents are more than happy to answer your questions. Hope to see you back in SF.
"OVERPRICED, SMALL ROOMS, EXTRA $$$ FOR PARKING"
THE HOTEL IS BEAUTIFUL. THE ROOM WE STAYED IN WAS NOTHING LIKE THE WEB PHOTOS. IT WAS VERY SMALL INCLUDING THE BATHROOM. THERE WAS NO COFFEE POT, FRIDGE, OR MICROWAVE. PARKING WAS ABSURD; IT COST US MORE THAN DOUBLE TO PARK THE CAR FOR THE WEEK THEN WHAT IT COST TO RENT THE CAR. WE WERE VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE ACCOMODATIONS; THE BED STUCK OUT FARTHER […] THAN THE WALL AND WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE STAND-UP MIRROR. THE AIR BLEW RIGHT ABOVE YOUR HEAD WHILE YOU SLEPT WHICH MADE FOR DRYNESS. THE ROOM WAS INCREDIBLY SMALL AND MADE FOR A LONG WEEK STAY. IF IT WAS ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT, PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM. THE BAR WAS NICE AND THE BARTENDERS WERE FRIENDLY. IF I WENT BACK TO SAN FRANCISCO I WOULD NOT STAY HERE AGAIN AND I WOULD RESEARCH THE PRICE OF PARKING. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel Dear Amy, I appreciate your comment. As for parking, it's managed by a 3rd party company who also manages many of the hotels' parking within the vicinity. I don't disagree about the parking price, but it is all compatible to other hotels. SF is very walkable and the Drake's location can't be beat when it comes to reaching to many tourist attractions. Whether on foot or a cable car, many things are within few minute walking distance. We offer morning coffee service in a lobby every morning, wine hour in the afternoon, in lieu of having a coffee maker. As far as our rooms go, there are several types of rooms available at the Drake; smaller "Historic" queen to much bigger suites.

"This is a 3 star hotel"
Very adequate, but this is not a 4 star hotel. A solid three. Very good location, pretty clean, but in the details, wear and tear. Also in service, very tolerable, but nobody went out of their way to make this qualify as a four star hotel. An example, we were arriving and going up the entrance stairs carrying our overnight bags... an employee, also […] going up the stairs, instead of smiling and letting us go first, (let alone offering to carry our bags,) hurried to jump ahead of us, so he would not have to walk up behind us... no "hello," no greeting. (The valet did greet us at the curb, and offer help with our bags.) Also, the room was fairly clean, but the windows and inside window sill were dirty, and there was a hair, (not our color or length,) stuck to the wall in the bathroom. Also window shade was broken and hung crooked. So, again a solid three star hotel, but I would probably not choose to stay here again. (I prefer four star, which this was rated.)
