The Hotel is right beside Valetta and far away from the awful Hotel developments in Silema, St Pauls. It is a marvellously luxurious 1930s Hotel reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Inspector Poirot. Gardens that lead to a lovely swimming pool under the ancient walls of Valetta and overlooking the harbour. Many rooms have balconies. Worth getting a room […] with a balcony and going for the breakfast.I prefer rooms facing the back of the hotel, overlooking the gardens. I have been twice and both times there were drinks and canapes on Wednesday night and a musicians most nights in the wonderful cocktail lounge. Very good hotel, central location for Valletta and buses to anywhere on the Islands, could not have been more convenient. The hotel and staff were excellent and responded quickly to requests. Good breakfast choice and free Wi-Fi in the main lounge. Also the business Centre was free to use at any time.

The expression Faded Grandeur springs to mind but overall the convenience of the position of the hotel outweighs any shortcomings. The beds are very comfortable (rooms are a little on the small side for a 5* hotel) and the standard of cleanliness etc is very good. I think that the 5* rating is overgenerous and think that a 4* + might be more appropriate as little things like paper napkins rather than linen napkins are little touches that let the standard down. It was impossible to get an English speaking channel on the TV and wi-fi was only available in the Palm Court lounge area, which was frustrating. Beautifully kept hotel, all the staff were pleasant and were quick to respond to any request, eg check in for our flight home. One evening the manager gave a cocktail reception for guests which was nice. The furniture in the room was slightly dated, but the towels and linen were excellent quality and very fresh. We would happily visit there again.

Excellent location for those interested in spending time in and around Valletta. Although we had one of the renovated deluxe rooms, the bathroom was looking tired and certainly could have been cleaner. Service in main restaurant was poor and slow. Breakfast was poor value for money - would have expected better range and quality. Refresh also very slow […] (had to wait for something every morning e.g. bread, plates). Palm Court was a lovely space to spend time (and only place with wifi). A lovely old hotel full of character and old world charm. The perfect location for exploring Valletta on foot, or taking the bus or driving further afield. The staff were all helpful and polite, and the room was spotlessly clean and tastefully furnished. The breakfast was fantastic. Can't fault it.

We loved the hotel and its old-time elegance. The breakfasts and dinner we had there were also extremely good. Our one criticism was that the staff could do with a bit more training: often breakfast tables were not laid up quickly enough and didn't have the correct cutlery, or our table was cleared whilst we were helping ourselves to the English breakfast! […] Less dropping of china and cutlery would also be an improvement. The Phoencia is a 5 star hotel right by the city gates of Valletta. We were pleasently suprised with the quietness of the location as we expected it to be a little noisy being on the edge of the city but we heard nothing! I had always wanted to stay at the Phoenecia, and was expecting grand opulence and wasn't disappointed... but its important to put things into context before you decide to stay there as some things were not as I expected. Firstly, this is an old hotel - it opened in 1947 and as such does not have the modern room layout that one would find in other, […] more modern hotels. Our first room had no balcony (we changed for one that did) and was smaller both than I expected, and the other hotels in Malta. Having said that, once you get past that, its a fine place, with a nice old world charm that makes it a great place to stay. However... be warned - the average age of the residents was somewhere around 65-70 and the level of their activity seemed to be breakfasting and then heading for the pool to read and lounge in the sun. We found 2 other couples who were as young as us and none of the oldies talked to us at all, so not a friendly social place unless you are retired. Breakfast was excellent - one of the best I have ever had - and the service was top notch, although the bar bills can be high so be warned. The Phoenicia is still being refurbished and we were allocated a room that was yet to be refurbished. It was tired but clean and was clearly in need of refurbishment but it was in the traditional style and I understand the move to bring a more westernised approach to the refurbishment is under review, thank goodness. I do not go to Malta to stay in […] a London Hotel. Other than this the hotel could not be faulted. The staff were friendly and anxious to help, breakfasts were superb and the general ambiance conducive to a relaxing stay. The standards of service were maintained in the pool area. Music and dancing in the lounge and a bar when one expects Hercule Poirot to enter any minute are further reasons to stay. Outside is the main bus station but this does not intrude on the hotel but rather adds character with the antiquated machines part of the islands history albeit they are being replaced later this year. If you want disco's, burger king and tattoo parlours this hotel is not for you can I recommend Sliema or Bugibba but if you want places of interest combined with an exceptional place to stay then the Phoenicia is for you. If I go back to Malta I would not look elsewhere. It is worthy of note that it was my birthday during our stay, nobody mentioned it to the hotel but when I returned to my room there was a complimentary bottle of fizz. We visited Malta from Saturday until Monday as a short birthday getaway and would heartily recommend the Phoenicia as a base for exploring the island. Access was easy and a limited amount of parking is attached with a public car park opposite if required. Valletta is within walking distance and buses also freely available. In the hotel itself, the Harbour […] view from the room was beautiful and service from the staff was very good. A young lady on reception even rang her brother to find out the details of the local football fixtures for me. The island was stunning and I would strongly recommend a visit to the Ix Xlukkajr restaurant at Marsaxlokk, where the young chef has put together an excellent menu at a reasonable price, and the staff are as friendly and knowledgeable as any where I have visited. The hotel is in the process of being upgraded with one wing having two floors refurbished. Initially we were provided with a refurbished room but felt that, for the length of our stay, it was slightly small although upgraded to a very high standard. We moved to a larger room in the unrefurbished wing where the room had more of a Mediterranean feel about […] it with white walls and tiled floors. The refurbished rooms have more of a modern standard hotel feel about them. The breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of cold and hot items available with other items available on request. There's even sparkling wine so a Bucks Fizz really sets you up for the day. The hotel is next to the bus park so very convenient for getting around the island. Just a pity that all of the old buses which epitomise Malta are about to be replaced due to EU regulations. The hotel is also just by the main gate to Valetta and everything is within walking distance. Overall I would have no hesitation in recommeding this hotel. We flew with Air Malta which was adequate although the leg room is not great, particularly if the person in front reclines their seat. Read more

This hotel is conveniently located right next to Valletta's city gates and the main bus station (where the airport bus stops and most other day trips start). Our room had 3 balconies and the air conditioning was quiet and efficient. The hotel's Palm Lounge had a pianist playing on a couple of the evenings we were there, enjoying the 'happy hour' cocktails. […] There was also a classical guitarist playing when we ate at the hotel's main restaurant. As 'old Malta hands' since the 1960's this was the first time we had stayed in The Phonecia although we had enjoyed afternoon tea on occasions in the past. The location at the entrance to Valetta cannot be faulted. We used the buses extensively and the terminus is directly outside the hotel. The rooms were comfortable and very clean and the staff extremely friendly. Our only criticism was the breakfast tea, which is particularly important to we English. Pots of tea are produced en-mass at the beverage station where they sit until ordered. We may have been unlucky but over 5 days all our pots of tea arrived stewed. Valetta is a fantastic town, full of history, culture and interest. We spent several days wandering round, investigating all the little side streets, finding new places to stop for a coffee or snack and generally soaking up the atmosphere. One of the most relaxing places I've stayed, totally clean and a pleasure to stay there. Two floors of the hotel have been renovated recently, but we were in one of the older rooms.
