"Friendly but expensive"
03/05/14 TripCase Sydney, Australia
Stayed on Friday and Sunday nights in February 2014 at the Eden au Lac. The staff are extremely friendly and professional, and I had a room on the 2nd Floor with a small balcony overlooking the lake. The heating is very good, but the room was quite stuffy as a result. The bathroom I had was tiny, but well appointed. The location is great and the road links to the rest of Switzerland are good. I found the roadside reception a little unnerving if you have a lot to unload from the left hand side of the car, as the place to park on the roadside is very narrow on a busy road. The location is an easy walking distance to many restaurants. Breakfast is good. For my taste the service and atmosphere were a little too much but if you like a slightly faded old fashioned style and don't mind paying a bit for it, then this is the place for you!

It is one of those places you like to come again...the location at the lake (in summer a splendid roof terrace and only a short walk to enjoy a swim in the lake) and walking distance to the opera, Kronenhalle etc. ...typical high quality Swiss Hotellerie with reliable service and excellent food and an atmosphere of entering an oasis which is what you might look for when staying in a city...
"Lovely Christmas evening"

Having gone to the Dolder Grand Hotel last year we decided to try the Eden au Lac for dinner on Christmas evening this year. (I've been there on a few occasions for afternoon tea with friends.) We were extremely surprised and delighted by the food. When we made the booking we were given the choice of a meat or fish based meal, and we chose the fish. We began the meal with the usual chef's amuse bouche which were delicious.. followed by variation of yellowfin tuna with avocado and sesame.. followed by poached Swiss organic egg, potato mousse line and black truffle - sounds a bit boring but it was "to die for"!! We then had Breton turbot, kohlrabi and tarragon flavoured beurre-blanc.. the fish cooked to perfection.. The meal ended with Sablé - peach mousse and white chocolate ice cream.. and then, of course, endless Friandises with coffee and digestifs.. All in all we were delighted by the whole evening.. the food was superb, the staff were great - smiling and friendly (not always the case in Zurich) and the ambiance in the restaurant was extremely pleasant - assisted by a pianist playing in the background with the most amazing repertoire!! We would definitely go back again..

I booked two rooms which are the Double deluxe room with lake Views.. Here are my reviews!! Positive Side 1) The rooms are very high quality!! The rooms are very large given the fact that Zurich has very limited land in the city centre!! The bed is very comfortable and the interior is very homey yet luxury, something that is very rare in many 5 star hotels!! 2) The bathroom size varies between rooms even though both are double deluxe! The one I got from the second floor is pretty huge and luxurious, and the one on the third floor is not as big!! Nevertheless, the amenities pack (such as soaps, shampoos and toothpaste) is very high quality!! 3) The views of the lake are amazing!! The higher you go, the better the views!! 4) The service is great!! Though I don't really deal with them much!! 5) I like the breakfast room!! It is really cozy and has a very luxury yet homey feel, the same feeling I had when staying in the hotel room!! 6) The bars i great too, there is a pianist on friday night when I went there and he is awesome!! The price of the beer is surprising affordable given the fact that it is a very expensive hotel!! 7) The location is superb but it depends on the perspective that you take, it is located right next to the lake!! But if you are too lazy to walk 10 minute or take public transport to Bahnhofstrasse or the train station.. It will be a 20CFH taxi fare.. 8) We got complementary walnuts and fruits on our arrival!! While everything seems perfect, there are negative sides too.. 1) Breakfast is pretty much standard with attempts to have an Asian menu, although I would have expected more given the price of the hotel.. Nevertheless, the breakfast room is lovely and the staff is excellent!! 2) The second point is the bar, while I love the interior of the bar, I don't think the staff here is very serious about running the bar.. There are one time when there are nobody tending the bar and i have to wait a few minutes just to get a staff to go inside.. Overall, since it is a very expensive hotel, I will expect more from the hotel!! The hotel deserve 5 star rating in a travel guidebook.. but I will have to rate it 4 stars in trip advisor!! It would have received my 5 stars rating if it's at least 60 CHF cheaper!!
"Tired, very tired"

We have stayed in this hotel many many times over the years. The staff is absolutely the best in the world. That being said, the hotel is tired, very tired. Here is what the hotel used to be - very polished - brass, furniture, curtains, marble etc. All the things you would expect from a 5* Swiss hotel. The restaurant and bar were bustling at night and now you are lucky if the restaurant is even open in the evening. Now they only polish the brass hand rails, the furniture and coverings are old, faded and torn - not in a charming way, The awnings that come out in the afternoon to protect from the sun are covered in black soot. The carpets on the stairs, hallways and rooms are worn to the point of being frayed and threadbare in places. The breakfast room has seen better days. In the rooms (which are a great size) the furniture has dings and needs replacing or at least refinishing and the beds are hard as a rock. The bathrooms are very well appointed. Nothing bad there! This used to be a happening place. They do have a cute rooftop bar that is great for sunsets but it is difficult to get to and very small. I am sure we will continue to stay here as I said before the staff is the absolute best!!
"Wonderful stay, amazing service, great hotel"

We've just returned from a wonderful weekend stay at Eden au Lac in Zurich, and it was amazing!! i booked it for my husband's birthday, and they went out of the way with little personal touches, fantastic service, and great atmosphere to make us happy. Just after a very smooth check in, we were helped to our room, and minutes after the staff arrived with a Birthday Cake and sang happy birthday to my husband :) how great is that!! there were flowers everywhere, and personal notes, and cards wishing us a wonderful stay, which we did entire weekend!! Small sweet treats on your pillow, welcome aperitif, and a very friendly staff always greeting us with a smile and very polite. They look after our car, everybody at this small charming hotel (only 50 rooms) knows you by name, and greet you every time they see you- wonderful, homey and cosy feel. Breakfast and room service great, lake view as expected, and rooms are really big and comfy, despite the traditional style of the hotel (i thought the style will bother me, as we really appreciate modern, but we loved it, as it was well looked after, and done with lots of taste). This hotel exceeded our expectations, everything was amazing, and the small personalized touches were just lovely, and what we needed :) Just at the end of our stay, the porter also put 2 bottles of mineral water in our car for the journey!! :) how lovely. We truly enjoyed and LOVED our stay, and will be back, hoping other travelers will give this hotel a chance, as it really treats you. A real bonus is the Great Location - with walking distance to the main shopping centre of Zurich a big plus (even for a 9-months pregnant woman). Highly recommend this hotel
"Top notch service with prices to match"

Stayed only because my normally cheaper hotels in Zurich fully booked due to a big congress in town. A wonderful hotel with the very best of Swiss service. A complimentary welcome plate of dried apricots, a plum, and some walnuts very welcome as was the bottle of water by the bed. Free wifi had poor speeds though and my colleague had none at all. Breakfast very very good but our wallets very much lighter for the experience.
"A Taste of Heaven"

The personal service and view of Lake Zurich was wonderful. Each person on the staff would call me by name. I returned one morning from a walk, and a staff person met me at the door, introduced himself, called me by name, and informed me that my friends would be arriving later than planned.

No electronic's opening your door with a magnetic card here. You get a key with a 103 year old brass key holder... yeah, 103 year old. We opted for a double room, city view as lake side would not have given us anything as we were not there long enough to enjoy the view from the lake. Bonus, room 314 is a corner room and guess what? We had a nice view of the lake from the side balcony. Room is insanely fashioned in the style I can only call "Laura Ashley". Slippers at your bed, fruits and nuts on the table, bottled water waiting... This hotel is what I consider a Palace, so this place is not cheap. Staff is top notch and ready to do anything to please you. Breakfast is in this huge ballroom style room, everything from American style bacon and eggs to dim sums for our Chinese friends. Mini bar is simple yet complete to help you relax. Want something more, the bar is out of a Hercule Poirot movie (that's Agatha Christie for those who want to know). You know there's history in these walls. There is an awesome bar upstairs on the sixth floor (yeah, the elevator only goes to 5), with a unique view of the lake and Zurich. Hotel is walking distance to downtown and shopping area. I recommend you walk as the taxi to come back from Oprah's favorite handbag store was a cool 25 francs... that's 2 km's for 25 francs... not the hotel's fault, just us lazy. Back to the hotel, bed was a bit on the old side, caving a bit inwards but the bedding was top quality. If you wish your bedding changed every day (and don't care about the environment) simply leaving the card on the bed and they will change the bedding. That's luxury service. Eden is on the same level as the Beau Rivage in Geneva, the Post Hotel in Zermatt or the Chabichou in Courchevel etc. This is high end and you know you're going to be well treated. A true 5 stars in my book. Oh I almost forgot, the staircase is truly awesome... enjoy...
"Great stay - Honeymoon package"
09/04/13 silvio_pestalozzi Zurich, Switzerland
I booked a wedding package to surprise my wife after our civil marriage in Zürich. The hotel did a great effort to make us feel comfortable and give us a memorable stay. The client service was friendly and very competent. The room was clean and they prepared some snacks and champagne with a welcome card. The lakeside view on the balcony is very nice and relaxing. Furthermore they included transportation (Jaguar XJ) in their package which really had a fair price comparing to other offers in Zurich. Only little downside might have been the rather small choice at the breakfast buffet but the quality was very good. Thank you Hotel Eden for this great stay! Silvio & Sherlyn
