I stayed at the hotel as the conference I was attending is being held there. This is the hotel's 100th anniversary. As a historic site, they tried to keep the ambiance as such despite recent renovations that upgraded the lighting (centrally controlled) & flat screen TV (include a small screen embedded next to bath tub). Furniture is outdated & carpet […] with little cushion felt like office/industrial grade. Harbour View is nice, but far from any commercial/retail hubs. It was ok except for miscommunication with reception staff. Make sure they understand English well. I paid extra for a massage which was supposedly included with a Centenial celebration discounted hotel rate. That was not the case.

Staying at the Manila Hotel was a paradox. It is a majestic hotel. Beautiful lobby and superb amenities like the exercise room, including sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and pool area. The room was spacious and beautiful. The air conditioning was inconsistent. It did not keep the temperature that we set. The wireless internet was inconsistent. I felt that some staff were stuffy and not overly warm. They were professional, but some were stand offish. I was taken back that I had to give 5,000 pesos as a deposit in order to sign for any excess charges. I have traveled in my lifetime, and I never had to do this before. What also surprised me was that a few staff did not thoroughly understand English, considering English is spoken throughout the Philippines. The breakfast buffet was awesome. Many choices. The restaurant prices are comparable to restaurant prices in the United States, which was expensive for Philippine standards. The one night we ate out, we spent 1/3 of what we would have spent for the same meal in the hotel. There was even a restaurant with a semi-formal dress code. Read more

Let me say that -- as a history buff -- I'm in love with the Manila Hotel simply because of its legacy as a grand hotel in the truest sense of the word. They have the scrumptious lobby with the smooth bell captains and impeccably dressed reception staff, ceilings dripping with enormous yet elegant chandeliers, gigantic plush couches anchoring the center […] of the room. They certainly know how to lay out a breakfast buffet, too, with a seemingly endless array of options (buffet was included in the cost of my room), from Italian to traditional Filipino fare. Having said that, the actual room itself -- while flawless in terms of neatness -- left a bit to be desired and revealed a surprising lack of attention to detail. The remote to the TV stopped working after a few minutes; the TV in the bathroom didn't work at all; the alarm clock had the wrong time on it; and there are no instructions on how to actually use the shower (it has both a handheld shower head as well as an overhead rainfall-type shower head, and I could not figure out how to turn on the latter). Also, despite the fact that I had added in my reservations that I needed a shuttle or some kind of transportation from the airport since I was arriving in the middle of the night, the Manila Hotel shuttle lounge at NAIA had no information about me and wasn't even expecting me. Hotel Manila was an excellent choice for my wife and I. Every taxi driver without fail knew the hotel and it was walking distance to Manila Ocean Park. Hotel has great character and history. Surrounding area not totally safe particularly after dark. Breakfast buffet was outstanding. The only dissatisfaction was the hotel's pushing of hotel transportation to the airport at 4 times the cost of a taxi.

Manila Hotel still remains to be the Grand Dame of all hotels in the Philippines. She is such a precious jewel whose luster never fades.
