It was a bit noisy, especially with the person walking in the room above mine. My main complaint was the single, very slow elevator. Windows in my room didn't open and no a/c so I would worry about this room in the summer (401). Easy walk to Union Square and local places to eat. Not the nicest neighborhood area but better than other options.

Cell Phone coverage in rear of hotel is abysmal, I could not get a signal any where in my room. Worked fine in lobby. WiFi signal was strong but the internet access was spotty, some times it was super fast and stable, other times it dropped every few minutes. Room was nice, television awesome. great! gregory and sean at the desk are very helpful. an added attraction is that Gregory sings along with the cd tapes and fills the lobby with cheer! The Christmas decorations in the hotel were beautiful!

Here on business for 4 nights. An older hotel but you wouldn't really know from the rooms, clean, good furniture, free WiFi. I enjoyed it. The location was convenient. The neighborhood was safe, but not as nice as Union Square since this is close to the Tenderloin district.

The room was comfortable, and nice to return to after a full day. The staff was helpful in dining option recommendations in the area, and in making connections with airport shuttles. The music in the lobby was fun! I initially booked the room because, even though it was a higher price than I wanted to pay, it was close to my evening destination and I thought I would save money by not having to take cabs to and from. The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. For the price, I would expect some better quality channels on the tv...mostly shopping type […] channels. The staff was very polite and professional, no problems there. I have to say the price of parking would be the biggest deterrent to my returning. I went out to a local venue (which was conveniently close) and was out fairly late with my car, and ended up having to do the valet parking for over $40 after tax. Had I known that in advance, I would have found another hotel further out from where I was going. So, when I rated the quality of the hotel service as a 3, that was because of the expensive parking. If you are looking for a modern highrise hotel with all of the amenities that "hip" travelers demand these days, this may not be for you. My wife and I travel to San Francisco a few times a year and have stayed in many downton hotels. A perfect one-word description for this hotel is "quaint". From the moment you walk through the doors off the street, […] that word should jump to the front of your mind. They have the movie "Vertigo" playing on a flat screen continually behind the reception desk. The checkerboard marble floor looks very vintage. The coping and crown molding looks old, but cared for. The room was small but very comfortable. I read a few comments about slow to no hot water. We were on the sixth floor and experienced none of that. The bed was comfortable, we had a nice TV and the internet worked as promised. The front counter staff (Sam and Robert) were both very personable and helpful upon each visit. The location was very convenient for us. It is right downtown and near enough transportation where we could get anywhere we needed to. Read more

We stayed in two different hotels over our stay in SF; one was very close to the trolley lines and Union Square and the second was Vertigo in a quieter neighborhood. While I missed being able to jump on the trolleys, buses, etc as easily as in Union Square, I did not miss the homeless people and just kind of crazy people blasting music outside our hotel […] windows. We also found great casual cafes around Vertigo that were perfect for easy dinner when we were too tired to venture far away. Belissimo had excellent pizza and paninis! The hotel is partway through a renovation as others have noted. There's no A/C which I would have liked one night that we were there, but I got used to it and just turned the ceiling fan on high. Staff was very nice and bed was comfy. We also grew to like the California trolley line although it was not as great as the two other lines for North Beach. Read more

We got a room on the top floor with a view... of all the other room's windows... expected at the price and in SF, but still not pleasant. The room itself felt very clean and sharp, although the white porcelain horse head lamps were a bit creepy. Free ice and water was no where to be found on the top or next-to-top floors, but we brought our own. The […] front desk was very helpful in telling us where all the fun places were, and we ended up walking a block to a strip of bars and late-night food. The next day we walked through China-Town, Little Italy, and all the way to Fisherman's Wharf, it was not a bad walk, and only took about 2hrs at a modest pace with multiple stops along the way. The trolley station was only a few blocks away, but the walk was certainly more fun. I didn't expect SF to be so hard to find parking, but we did, and at some of their rates, I'm starting to think opening a little parking lot would make me quite a rich man. Read more

We got a room overlooking neighbor's nice green backyard garden. However, the window can not be opened to let air in, so the room at times smells musty and humid (especially the bathroom). Some of the staff were extremely nice the other ones stay away from them. The only ice machine was in the lobby. I was on the 7th floor. My room was hot (no air cond just fan) and smelt very old (was disturbing). But the hotel had fresh paint and nice decor. I think im over the Personality hotels.

This is what I consider a pretty objective rating/review of the Hotel Vertigo on Sutter. The food in the area is good and affordable, the exec king room is decent, parking in public lots is affordable. That said ... the service was horrible and the valet appeared very irresponsible handling vehicles. I was charged for a night my car was never in the […] valet. I was told no one was around to make the correction. I did not sign the bilil and will dispute $35 of it to the credit company. I wish I didn't have to go through that hassle. Also the neighborhood is loud and very close to the undesirable 'tenderloin district'. To sum it up. Affordable but not desirable. I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN! Read more

This is a very nice, mid priced hotel. It seeems to have been recently refurbished and my room was very clean and comfortable. The location is good if you intend to stay in central SF. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Powell Street BART (10 minutes going the other way due to the lay of the land). The BART will take you directly from SFO for about […] $8. Union Square, which is the shopping centre of the city, is equidistant more or less. The area around the hotel does seem a bit low brow when you first turn up but it is better described as 'studenty'. It is certainly not at all threatening, even at night. It certainly compares well with a 5 block radius of Leicester Square if you want a comparison with London. Most of the main attractions in SF are close enough to walk to if you can hack the hills. If not, there are good comms links nearby, especially on Market Street. (Powell Street BART is on a junction with Market Street). The Pier building is about 20 minutes away and Fisherman's Quay probably about 30 minutes if you feel the need to go there. As for the hotel - I was very happy and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. It must be one of the best value hotels in that area with no compromises on service or comfort for the star band it's in. There is no restaurant. There are loads of exxcellent cafes within a stone's throw so a morning brew is no drama. I can't talk about parking as I was on foot. Overall, very happy. Read more
