"not great...not terrible"
located in a transitional neighborhood, it is walkable to most SF spots. No frills and no air conditioning so stay away during mid-summer.Genuine Expedia guest review
Easy walk to union square and cable cars. The hotel was nice enough but the bed we had was uncomfortable. We sstayed only a weekend any longer and we would have had to change hotels.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beds not comfortable, neighborhood not ideal"
My stay was fine. Way overpriced but that had to do with the Dreamforce conference in town. The Tenderloin neighborhood is not super safe at night - crummy part of town but not far from downtown, Union Square, Nob Hill and some of the nicer areas. Hotel was clean, pretty basic. Great robes. Biggest complaint is that the bed and pillows were extremely […] uncomfortable. Hard as rocks. Did not sleep well. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
This is an older hotel and it does not have air conditioning. Be careful on a hot day! I also have a problem with the management. They will charge the credit card you gave them to hold the room for the full charge of your stay prior to you checking in. If you want to change cards or pay in cash it's too late. Be careful of this place!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"great staff, location and hotel"
the staff is friendly, helpful and extremely great all around. from the receptionist to the maintenance man.really great staff. the hotel is located half a mile away from union square nice 5 minute walk. there are a lot of great places to eat or get a drink along the way. the room its self is nice well furnished nice decor. could use a bigger tv but […] we really didn't use it. "Nice, unique Hotel"
A very nice, unique styled Boutique Hotel - everything was as expect. The only two things, that made us a bit unhappy were the paper thin walls and not properly closing doors (you could hear everything happening on the corridor and the neighbour rooms) and the location, which is really close to some not that nice areas. Maybe we just have been too scared […] :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old building, No Air Conditioning!"
The room did not have any air conditioning. The hotel placed a large very loud fan in the room to attempt to cool it, but it was so noisy leaving it on made it impossible to sleep. It's either too hot with the fan off or too loud with the fan on. It was not a pleasant night!Genuine Expedia guest review
Great Hotel. Only downfall was no AC. It was one of the hottest weekends in San Francisco, so the room was boiling hot!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"over priced and old"
Awful beds with old lumpy pillows. Torn draperies, and cigarette holes in the shower curtain. Toilet didn't flush properly. Never again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"It was okay . . ."
The staff was nice but it is an older hotel and the TV in our room did not work. The staff did their best to make up for it which we appreciated but the parking was terrible. Don't think I'll ever stay there again but was a fun experience for just once. Next time will drive down the coast a bit, maybe to Pacifica, and stay closer to the water.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great stylish hotel"
Great friendly staff, great ubication around 8-10 minutes walking distance from heart of union square, free tea and coffee in the morning and free wine from 5:30-6:30pmGenuine Expedia guest review
"Over rated hotel."
I would not stay at this hotel again. The accommodations were marginal, the view was terrible and the air-conditioning did not exist.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Old building in good condition, nice neighbourhood"
We had a room on the back of the Hotel , ofcourse you hear the sounds of the firetrucks etc in the room , but I didn't miss any sleep over it. Easy walk from the california cable car.Genuine Expedia guest review
the staff was great...elevator small and really slow. took stairs. pretty datedGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Wonderful staff. Friendly and helpful. Great location. Found my way around town and came back to nice clean room.Genuine Expedia guest review
I really enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Vertigo. The property is old, as is common in the area, but well maintained and pleasantly decorated. The staff was friendly and helpful. Excellent value for the money. I will definitely stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel within walking distance to Union Square"
A comfortable, practical place to stay, close to Union Square, but with the advantage of peace and quiet, and proximity to good restaurants.Genuine Expedia guest review
"I paid too much even for san francisco standard."
i will reserve directly next time and save money.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Definitely a boutique hotel look and feel but really missing some key things. Overall decor and cleanliness is just fine -- funky modern updates to a cool old building. Do note however that there's no AC -- fine on most days but definitely something to note as there are also no screens on the window so you get the additional company of some bugs! Its […] August so I didn't test the heat but there's no thermostat so you'll have no control of the temperature any time of year. Also there's no TV to speak of -- fuzzy picture for about three rather obscure channels. Granted in a city as fun as SF TV isn't a huge priority but still not what you would expect. It as a busy time in SF and I paid over $400/night so a disappointing experience overall. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was fine for a short stay on business. Room was quite a nice size.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Not a terribly far walk from Union Square, but wish it had been a bit more conveniently located. I was given the "penthouse" room and though it was large, it felt a bit more like an attic. Overall, a comfortable stay but will probably stay elsewhere on my next trip.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Good hotel for the price. Glad it was not hotter weather because with only an overhead fan in the room, it would have been very uncomfortable otherwise! Only one, very slow elevator. Very good service with the valet and great service by the front desk. Close to Union Square, but quiet and in a nice neighborhood.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Too much hype"
They def hype the website description up to make up for the over priced rooms.Genuine Expedia guest review
Relatively large and up to date rooms. Two classic San Francisco interior staircases plus elevator. Decent breakfast places nearby.Genuine Expedia guest review
"San Francisco Getaway"
This was my husband's first trip to San Francisco. I choose the Vertigo for the location. I was a bit hesitant due to some of the reviews. Boy was I surprised. The hotel is great. The rooms, yes they are small, but they are clean, well maintained and cozy. There is coffee in the room, a mini refrigerator, very nice shampoo and conditioner. The wine […] reception in the evening is a plus. We met a couple here from London. It was nice to come back the next day and share out adventures. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Near the cable cars to hop on."
A little pricy, but you are paying for the honor of staying at a classic movie "prop"......Parking has to be valet, as there are no parking spots on the street.Genuine Expedia guest review
I enjoyed the location and facility for parking 1 block away. Friendly staff. Room was well appointed and had a great shower. They need to sort out better cable or more channels for all types of guests. Would stay there againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was relatively close to most areas you would want to visit and the public transportation options worked well. However, the hotel itself wasn't that great. The plumbing didn't work at all in the first room we had. When we called down to alert them, they just moved us to another room. The plumbing in the other room did work, but sometimes did […] require a second flush. The front desk staff isn't really that helpful. They do give directions but are not very clear about which specifics. Also, when we checked out, the front desk seemed to be preoccupied and didn't really pay any attention to what we were asking upon checking out. This hotel is very expensive, and not worth the price. I'm still waiting for a $75 "incidental" fee to be reimbursed to my card when I was told it would only take 1 day. There is no A/C, no frill, and no personal touches. I would only stay here again if the rates were GREATLY reduced. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This was the cheapest room in the city I could find that I knew would not be flea infested. There was a deal for 154 a night, which came to 175 after tax and that was before 40 dollar valet, which I recommend as parking in this neighbor will be tough to find and a bit dicey depending on where you leave it. So it comes out to a little over 200 for the […] whole deal, which is San Fran ain't too bad. The room is clean, but certainly nothing special. In my room there was no art on the wall. One picture might have been nice, the bare white all over was begging for something! My bed was comfortable, even though it was clearly an older mattress of the classic coil spring variety The staff was friendly enough. My advice is that if you're looking for a deal and you can get this place for under 200 a night its worth it. Don't pay full rate for this hotel. If you're prepared to drop 250/night there are much nicer places to stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location, no objections for price"
The hotel is comfortable and convenient--cheaper parking fee helps.Genuine Expedia guest review
We decided to book a room last minute and they were very accommodating. Each person we came in contact with was very friendly. Room was clean and comfortable. There was no ac unit but we had a window we could open and a ceiling fan. In the city that's all you need. My only reccomondation if you valet your car is to call ahead for it. It took about 30 […] min. There are lots of bars, restaurants and fun things to see all in walking distance. We would defiantly stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Easy to get to, easy to go anywhere!"
Very easy to get to from BART Union Station. Just couple blocks walk to major bus routes. Coffee houses close by. Just wished there was more outlets in room. With three females in a room you need outlets for all our goodies!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent Hotel, Sketchy Neighborhood"
Hotel was decent... old but renovated. Surrounding neighborhood (Tenderloin) is a little sketchy. Valet can be a little slow as cars are housed off property.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel that's not too far out"
nice hotel that looks like it has been recently (past few years) renovated. The building itself is old, but everything has been painted and renovated to look clean and kept.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cute hotel, clean, and with good style"
The hotel was very clean both in common areas and the room itself. Staff was courteous and professional. A couple of things that need attention are not huge but would make the experience a bit better: Some textiles and finishes throughout are showing their age, despite being immaculate, could really use updating/refinishing (examples are the elevator […] door gray fabric, and the leather of the office chair in my room). Someone on staff smokes so the elevator smelled very smoky frequently. Consider putting a splitter on the electrical plugs next to the bed (the radio and light take up the two there). WiFi was solid. Decuded to leave,. after staying there only 1 hour Very dated, no airconditioning which made it impossible to stay in our room. Also stale odourGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"What more could you ask for?"
The hotel is located in an acceptable neighborhood and is centrally located. I happened to arrive at the Ferry Building/Embarcadero and took a bus with friends to the the hotel. It was a short walk between the bus stop and the hotel and I would have been fine walking it alone day or night. Since it's prior existence as the York, this hotel has become […] a fun boutique hotel with crisp white, orange and brown decor. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice and stylish boutique hotel"
Hotel Vertigo is one of many re-modeled boutique hotels in San Francisco and it's very nicely done. Rooms are decent-sized, styling is great and it's very clean. The bed is comfortable and the hotel is quiet. Service was great at the front desk. Like many of the hotels in this crowded area, they sub-contract their valet parking so remember to call ahead […] and allow 30 minutes to retrieve your car, because it will actually take 30 minutes. Who knows where they are coming from! The neighborhood (Tenderloin) has changed a lot but like any big city, you'll need to be aware of where you're going --- parts are still a bit seedy. But you're very close to the downtown and Union Square area from the hotel and it's a great walking city if you don't mind a few hills. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Budget hotel with cool decor"
Lackluster service, non-working fan, incredibly hot and stuffy room. Couldn't sleep between the heat and the loud street yelling. An unpleasant experience.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Big city price, just ok."
Location was good and the hotel was newly painted and very clean. The Hitchcock vibe was cute. A few steps away you could find pizza and on the corner a nice coffee house for the morning fix. I stayed during a May heat wave with no AC, only a small ceiling fan. May want to consider that during the summer. Short walk to the cable cars. Parking will set […] you back. I arrived from the airport on the Metro and it was an uphill walk that I enjoyed, but take a taxi if street people stress you. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Comfortable Affordable SF hotel"
Hotel Vertigo was the only hotel I could find near Union Square or the Financial District that looked decent and didn't cost way north of $300. With tax, just over $300. It is an older building but clean and eclectically designed. Per the name, the James Stewart movie is playing in the lobby. The Cal King bed was comfortable, the room roomie and the […] bathroom nice. The carpet could have been better. The orange leather covered wing chair with VERTIGO embroidered vertically on the seat was unusual. The downside is the hotel doesn't have a restaurant or bar but the neighborhood has lots of options within a short walk. I ate at the Nob Hill Grille and loved it.
