We loved the hotel and thought we got a great bargain until we saw the parking rate. Why do guests have to pay $25 a day to park in the garage when they can park in a back lot across from Starbucks for $8 a day? A bit overpriced. Also, because we got a great deal on hotels.com we did not pay the full price but if we had, and looking at the price of meals in the restaurants, etc. that parking should be FREE unless you use the valet parking where staff is needed.

This is the hotel we normally stay at when my girlfriend and I go visit my parents who live in LA. We enjoy the Little Tokyo area, and it's a decent price for a decent hotel. We've been booking this hotel once or twice a year since 2007. We knew the parking rate at this hotel was ridiculous. However, it didn't used to be a problem because we could usually find parking just outside the hotel at one of the Downtown LA parking lots for a fraction of what the hotel charges. However, because of tough economic times, these parking lots are starting to charge 2 days parking (if you arrive before midnight) and this brings the price up closely to what the hotel charges.

My train was very late getting into LA so I called the hotel at 11 pm on Saturday night to let them know that I would be checking in late. After navigating a bewildering automatic phone system I found myself on hold for 20 minutes before talking with a hotel reservation representatvie at which point I described my simple request of a late check in. I was told that they could not help me and that I would need to contact the front desk and the person directed me to call back as they could not transfer me. After calling back it took several attempts on the automated phone system to get through to the front desk at which point they were able to confirm a late check in. This was not the way I wanted to spend my night out in LA, on the phone, on hold for 30 minutes for a very simple request. That being said the room was fine, the hotel quite clean and the staff friendly.

I stayed at this hotel for two weeks due to a business trip and the proximity to my customer location. I stayed in two different rooms since I checked out over the weekend. Here is my experience.... They seem a bit short staffed on the front desk - only one or two people there and pretty crowded most of the time - there are a lot of Asian guests, and I think this slows things down at the front desk due to the language barrier. Once you are checked in and past the front desk, things get better... The rooms were spacious - a huge closet was very nice. I had a refrigerator in each room which was nice since I was there two weeks. Everything worked, the rooms were clean - nothing spectacular, but cozy enough for two weeks. The elevators are fast - there are 4 of them, so I didn't waste time each day waiting for elevators - very nice I never ate at any of the restaurants at the hotel so I can't comment on the food, but there is a starbucks as part of the hotel which was very nice. I also didn't rent a car - the daily parking fee at the hotel is outrageous, and I chose to use public transportation the entire two weeks I was there - once you figure out the system, there is little need to have a car, as los angeles has a very good public transportation system. The flyaway bus to/from the airport is only seven bucks each way, so you'll save a lot if you don't rent a car. The only real complaint I have is there are very few places to eat close to the hotel. There is an asian grocery store behind the hotel so I bought supplies there, but if you are looking for a lot of selection for dining within walking distance, you might want to look elsewhere. Overall, the hotel was fine, but I wasn't in the room a lot due to my work schedule. If you don't mind the limited selection of restaurants and the fact that the hotel is in Little Tokyo, you'll be fine - frankly, I enjoyed the cultural experience.

You will definitely get your money's worth. The room was great, the garden on the third floor was a perfect place to relax. The only negative thing I have to say about the hotel is that the front desk was incompetent and upon arrival we were told that there is no bell service at that time, we had to wait half an hour for the cart, take the cart to our room ourselves and then call the front desk to let them know that they can come and get it. The guy at the front desk was extremely rude and unpleasant, but during the next couple of days we had an outstanding service. The location is very convenient - right next to 101 freeway and another added bonus was Starbucks attached to the hotel's building.

The bars and restaurants in the hotel are almost always empty; the restaurant in the Japanese garden is open very limited hours. Luckily, the hotel connects to Weller Court, which has some terrific food, and there are tons of restaurants in a few block radius.

The Kyoto Grand is in a great neighborhood - there are terrific restaurants within walking distance, which is great becaue the food in their Garden restaurants is overpriced and the food in their main restaurant is pretty bad. I did enjoy the garden - the free jazz on Thursdays, watching Monday night football, or just relaxing. The bar in the garden is open very limited hours and the Genji bar was empty every time I went in. That was a great encouragement to go out and enjoy the neighborhood around you!

You can tell that the hotel has been their for a while, it appears used, but then again the rooms are nice, with big TV's, and you never have to wait for the elevator. Self-service parking is very easy and it is about $24 a day. Internet in the room is about $14, a bit too much and should be included. The location is good for downtown, but you must keep in mind what part of LA you want to see, as I would recommend taking a hotel within and that area, as distances in LA are very big. A cab to Sunset strip was about $42.
