Hotel Diplomatic - Rome

The hotel is in a great location- close to mainly highlights as well as shops. It is a basic hotel with all you need. Breakfast is not amazing but just okay. Staff are helpful and speak english- We felt comfortable and loved the location! Will definitely go back there again!

This was a great choice for a trip to Rome. We had room 504 which was very quiet well maintained. The beds are firm but after a long day of walking, they were very comfortable when you got back. You have to purchase tickets at a Tobacco shop right across the street from the hotel. The WiFi worked great and is complimentary.The hotel does provide a breakfast from 6:30 until 10:30 which is nice - no bacon and eggs but still a good breakfast. The people at the front desk can be quite helpful as well. A couple things thet maybe should be mentioned though is that while there is an elevator, it is VERY slow and only 3 people can fit at a time. The elevator is also about 5 steps up from the small lobby so someone who is confined to a wheelchair or cannot climb any steps would not be able to stay here. The air conditioner also is turned on and off at the discretion of the management so if they feel it isnt hot enough for air conditioning then turning it on isnt an option for you! The windows do open and the night air was very nice but we stayed in March so during the summer that may be a problem if your internal temperature does not match with that of the hotel manager in charge of the air conditioner. The hotel staff does a nice job. Staff is helpful when needed and the breakfast is adequate. Don't expect a traditional American-type breakfast and you will be alright. Location is good. The hotel is not on a major traffic road (on a side street) so it is less busy and quieter. Go left out the front door and you stay on the Vatican City side of the […] Tiber River, go right and you can cross the Tiber on the Ponte Cavour and you are on the Spanish Steps, Coliseum, Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, etc. side of the river. We chose this hotel for a 2 night stay after our completed tour of London and Paris. After having been to Rome last year with a tour, we decided to come back. We chose the The Diplomat because after reading the reviews, we wanted to be as close to everything as possible. The rooms were clean. My husband and I just returned from a week in Rome and were so glad we had chosen to stay at the Hotel Diplomatic. Our rooms were clean and roomy by Rome standards. The bathroom was also more roomy than we had expected. The front desk staff (available 24 hours a day) was especially helpful with directions and advice on buying tickets for the train trip […] we took to Naples and then Pompeii. The breakfast buffet was not elaborate, but the food was good and opened right on time. I looked forward to having cafe latte every morning with hot coffee and warm milk served in pitchers on our table. The location was the best part of the Hotel Diplomatic. We were 1/2 a block from the river and walked along the river and all over town to see the sights. The bus stopped right outside the front door, and the Metro stop at Spanish Steps was close enough to walk to. The neighborhood seemed safe at all hours, and the hotel recommended a reasonably priced restaurant with delicious food a few doors away from the hotel. The ATM was just outside the front door of the hotel, making a convenient and secure place to withdraw Euros. We were traveling with friends who had single rooms, and they were very happy with their rooms too. Although the hotel is located on a busy street, the windows provided good sound insulation, so we weren't bothered by noise. I highly recommend the Diplomatic Hotel and will stay there again when we go back to Rome. Read more

This is a centrally located wonderful hotel directly on the #87 bus line and a convenient walk (for walkers) across the Ponte Cavour to the neighborhood of the Spanish Steps and its metro station. The 87 line runs through the heart of Rome east of the river to the Foro Romani and the Coloseum. Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating with great advice […] on transportation. We felt the room price off season was a good value and included a nice continental breakfast with coffee, juice, wonderful pastries, cereals, fruit, cold cuts and cheeses. The breakfast room is generously sized, but get down to breakfast earlier than 10:00 on weekends as seating is limited if all guests show up at the same time. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and included a safe. Our stay was over all quite but old buildings do let in hallway noise when guests are coming and going with luggage. Get your bus tickets at any tabocconist or but them on the #87 self service machine for 1 Euro Three stars is a perfect rating for this hotel. it is an elegant and charming place but over all small and low frills. So if you want, clean, comfortable safe, centrally located and convenient to a tourist bus line to many of Rome's top sites and walking distance to many others such as the Vatican or Spanish Steps and its high end shopping then this is a perfect place to stay. Bring your passports! The hotel requires them for all guests There is no hotel parking and the (relatively) nearby overnight lots are pricey (especially if parking a big car) ie 24euro per day. if arriving from Termini just take the red line to the Spagna station or inquire about busses to the central bus terminal and them pick up #87 which picks up and drops off right in front of the hotel! We chose the Hotel Diplomatic for our Rome Vacation due to its proximity to Vatican City. Of our 4 days, 2 were starting at the Vatican (Sunday Mass and Monday at the Vatican Museum), and the location made it very easy for us to get to St. Peter's and the Museum quickly with a 10 min walk. The location was also great for our first day as we only had […] a short walk to a stop on the Ciao Roma on/off tour bus to get a feel for the city as our first item of business. The room was nice. The King bed was actually two twins, but was very comfortable for both my wife and I. We were also lucky to be on the floor that had a "balcony" (in quotes because it was just big enough to stand on) and provided a pleasant view of the street below and the connecting bridge over the Tiber. The only negative was the lack of outlets near the bed. I have sleep apnea and had to borrow the one extension cord in the hotel every night to plug in my CPAP machine. The staff at the hotel was very good at remembering this after some confusion about it the first night. Also, the hotel is half a block from Vito's Roma restaurant that is highly rated and excellent. We walked a lot on our trip (over 20 miles in the 4 days) and were comforted each night as we returned to the Diplomatic. It is a very nice hotel and one we would certainly recommend to any (non-handicapped) family or friends. I say non-handicapped because the elevator is very small and only accessible after climbing three steps. Read more

My college student son and I stayed here for several days in May 2010 after our flight home was cancelled. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and only wished we had stayed here at the beginning of our vacation as well (which started in Rome before hitting the road for other parts of the country). The bathroom was 'American' style with full tub and […] shower; the bed was almost soft compared to the rock-hard beds in the rest of the country - by far the most comfortable of any we stayed at in Italy. The room was twice as large as some others we stayed in and the couch/single bed and table and chairs made the room very comfortable to spend a little down time in. Best of all, breakfast was served until 10:30 (perfect for late nights diners - whereas elsewhere breakfast ended at an impossible 8:30) and could be taken in an outside courtyard; plus the capuccinos were almost American size. The neighborhood is wonderful - quiet and not overly commercial but with several restaurants within one block open late - and only one block from a bridge over the river. The location is great - very convenient - the nearest metro (Spagna - Spanish steps) is a beautiful 10 min walk, (about 10-15 to the Vatican), but buses stop right in front of the hotel for routes that take you all over the city - much faster than the metro in many cases and much more interesting. Another major bus stop for other lines is only one block up at Piazza Cavour. The taxi to downtown train station Termini was only about 10 Euro. The front desk staff are on duty 24/7 and were very helpful with directions and bus selections but purchasing a city bus map at any metro station will liberate you to travel confidently on your own all over town. The street rooms are noiser than rear rooms but nothing compared to other places we stayed. My mum and I recently stayed here (Room 307) for 7 nights to celebrate her 60th birthday, the hotel is in a great location and from the trip advisor comments we were a little apprehensive. However this hotel has it all for a city break - good staff and good rooms (with plenty off electric points and a safe) a good choice of continental breakfast and […] has free wifi. Assumta was the friendly face of the breakfast waiting staff and the front desk team were very helpful and cheerful. The room was kept clean by the friendly chamber staff. Our room faced into the courtyard - we could not hear any traffic noise. Bus stops to all areas of the cities sites are located immediately outside the front door and the Sitbus Airport Shuttle stop (the same stop to/from airport) is just the other side of Piazza Cavour (approx. 100m from hotel). This small hotel has a really convienient location between the Vatican and the City Centre. It is a bit of a hike from the metro with luggage, but we made it, and the reception staff were friendly and always helpful. The room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was very adequate, and we thought that our package represented excellent value.

It's in a great location within walking distance of all the major tourist attractions and there are plenty of good restuarants and bars nearby. This hotel has so much going for it but for us, one major drawback. The really hard, uncomfortable beds. The location was fantastic, walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go and easy connection to/from the airport using the Sitbus, which stops just across the Piazza Cavour. Good stuff. Spent a January weekend with the girlfriend and was really impressed. Nice staff (good at English) great location (If you are up for 15 min walks you reach the Vatican, Spanish steps, Fountana di Trevi, shopping district etc). Happy to say they were staffed 24/7 even in off season. Am I being overly positive?
