Until this stay, I've had consistently good experiences with Days Inn. But this was THE WORST hotel experience I've ever had, bar none: When we got into our room, it must have been nearly 100 degrees, and the carpet was wet (which we discovered when we took our shoes off). We were deep into our naps, when staff pounded on our door and told us we had to move to a new room immediately because they'd accidentally put us in a room where the carpet had just been cleaned. An understandable mistake, but the problems continued. Our new room had a toilet that ran off and on all night, the sink drain barely worked, and there was no knob on the air conditioner/heater, so we couldn't get the air comfortable. We called the front desk and they said they'd fix it, but nobody came. The room was also dirty and smelled heavily of deodorizer. I spoke with the manager the next day about all the problems, and she said they'd advised hotels.com to give me a $20 credit (and their bill said in writing to call hotels.com for the $20) due to our bad experience. But when I called hotels.com, it turns out the manager only authorized $7! The only things good I can say is that the staff was polite (though inept), and the location was good.

The shower was impossible to adjust as the temperature constantly went from scalding to icy with rare stops at a comfortable temperature.

The hotel is right in the heart of things to do. Walking distance to The Market and many more places of interest. Many very good restaurants within just a few blocks. The staff was very friendly. The room was clean and well kept to be an old establishment. Part of the parking lot was being repaved so the hotel paid for indoor parking just across the street. Will be going back very soon.

There was a musty smell to the room and this is an older hotel that needs some work but the staff was great and the rate was on target for what we got.

This dive must rely on a great location to get away with providing a beyond poor room. The specific problems we encountered: way too little parking, dirty carpet, dirty walls, funky smelling linens, cracked/broken ceiling from water damage, dirt/dust behind chairs, night stand, etc., other pockets of dirt in corners, base of doors, inconsistent AC that was VERY loud when it kicked in and the beds were hard as a rock. Ugh! We could not wait to get out of there.

If you want the perfect location in the Historic District, this is the place, this is by far the best price. My wife didn't like the condition of the room but it was clean. She thought the beds could have had a better mattress and the shower temperature varied when she took a shower. I take a five minute shower and the temperature was fine for me. She showers much longer and had problems, too hot, too cold variations. It's a place to stay, everything works. My only comment is that the room always had a strong Lysol smell. I have read many reviews about many hotels in Charleston and people commented on a musty room smell. Maybe they were covering this. There is a parking lot on site, it's free, we were there for three days, walked everywhere, didn't use the car at all.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a comfy location with in-room coffeemaker and luxury amenities. It was even better to find that the restaurant next door, Toast, provides generous coupons to Days Inn guests, and has terrific food and a homey bar. You're steps from terrific touristing here. Try it!

Although the staff tried to make the stay good and did allow a late night additional room, they had significant maintenance problems. Arriving late afternoon, we took a shower and the water backed up in the tub. The backup also occurred with the flushing of the toilet later that night, including solid waste. At that point we complained and the management allowed us a second room so that we would not have to move everything late at night. The second room also had plumbing problems with the toilet threatening to overflow. Neither room was very clean. The threshold going into the bathroom was grey with dirt at the center and thick and black at the last few inches on each side. There were hairs and dirt in the corners by the tub as well. The air was not on and took a very long time to cool the room down to a comfort level.

It was close to plenty of restaurants, and also many beautiful historic homes. The staff was very friendly and informative. The room was smaller and nothing fancy, but it was clean, which is what matters most. There was no elevator to the 2nd floor (not a problem for us, but if you have trouble getting around I'd request a ground-level room). Also there was no breakfast (there was a cafe' attached where you could buy it), but those are the only couple of things I saw that could be improved.
