Rydges Rotorua - Rotorua

Rydges may be more luxurious in other locations but this branch is roomy and comfortable, especially the beds. We had a nice view on the south side and loved it. There was a nice hot tub to soak in and a pool where I could swim laps. Lots of tourists from Taiwan and Malaysia seemed to like it, too.

I think there's better choices for the money in Rotorua. The room was very dated and the hotel staff pushed us to use their restaurant although we declined. The fitness/pool facility is not worth staying for, however not a lot of hotels in the area have both these facilities. The shower didn't really work at all. It was either all hot water or all cold […] water regardless of the settings. As I said everything was dated and that gave a bit of a "dirty" look to things to as sheen was wearing off of metal fixtures, ceiling blade fans were bent, etc. Read more

Our group of four adults stayed at Rydges Rotorua for three nights in February 2012. The hotel itself was ok, rooms were big and clean. But I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone because of its unfriendly staff at the reception. We had booked wrong dates online via an agent. The hotel had pretensions of a four star hotel, and all the expense of a 4 star hotel, but not the quality. Carpet on the staircases was worn through in places. Plumbing had no insulation, so when someone above me decided to run a late bath on the balcony tub, it was like being in the same room. The hotel staff was very friendly, check in time is 2pm, but they let me in a bit early. The room was very clean, comfortable, and I loved the minibar. The hotel bar was great, I did not try to restaurant so I cannot comment. Rooms are tidy and nice with just the odd dust in corners, facilitys are not as good any more, spa kinda cools down after a while and food is miles over priced but in a good area close to everything, internet was down when we went and no compensation, I think with all the accom competition in rotorua you could proberly do better... Booked Rydges as its is know to be a high quality hotel, however this was far from the reality at the Rotorua establishment; the foyer is grand but very out dated, the staff did not offer to help with our bags but seemed willing to help other guests staying at the hotel at the time, but what was most disappointing was the room, very unsatisfactory the […] place felt run down and patched up, the seals in the bathroom had been reapplied and reapplied and looked very unhygienic brown and filthy, the shower was caked in scum, tiles were broken, the ceiling fan was dirty and not working, temporary pedestal fan was also covered in dust and would have induced a asthma attack in suffers for sure, the bed-head had been broken and was simply glued back together with bits of glue seeping down, there were cobwebs in the room, the ironing cover was burnt and needed replacing. This was truly the worst hotel we had stayed in during our 5 week stay in New Zealand and spectacularly over priced for the quality of the accommodation. We left feedback with the staff member on check-out which was meet with hostility, and till today we haven't had any response. I will highly caution anyone looking to stay here there are much nicer motels around for half the price a very low point in our holiday of New Zealand's islands. Read more

The Rydges hotel is OK, and the rooms are very nice. However, rooms do not have air conditioning. While windows can be opened, this does result in road noise keeping you awake. Bar and restaurant appear to be somewhat understaffed, resulting in slow service.

We have stayed at quite a few Rydges hotels in New Zealand and Australia. In the past, we have been quite happy with them. Rotorura was an exception. Check in was perfunctory and not very helpful. Our room was on the garage level. Although large and with all amenities, lights from the outside were disruptive during the night as the blinds did not completely […] block out the light. Worst of all, we paid a premium price for this room for two nights. To try to do our part and assist the hotel in their "green" efforts, we indicated with their placard not to change our sheets for out second night. What we didn't know is that they didn't do anything! They not only didn't change our sheets, they did not make the bed or tidy our room. They placed a few clean towels in the room and that was it. I could have stayed home and not made my bed, I didn't have to pay over $200/night for this lack of service. When I informed the desk, they said that was "terrible". They did not offer to tidy the room, make the bed, perhaps offer a complimentary drink...or breakfast...nothing. We had confirmed reservations for another Rydges hotel in Auckland which was fine and had helpful staff. Unfortuantely, the issues we incurred in Rotorua, will have us look at other hotel chains in our future travels. Read more

Not all rooms have air conditioning and as ours faced west the room was uncomfortably hot each night. Make sure you check for air conditioning if travelling in summer. The bathrooms were a little dated. But on the plus side the beds were comfy and the hotel service was great.

Large room, great bed. amentities overall very good. Only issue was having to lug suitcases up stairs as no lift at front of hotel thatr eaches the first floor. Did find a service lift round the back that goes to first floor, Surprised no staff told us to use that to bring the luggage up..

Overall pleasant and great clean and roomy rooms! Has a grand entrance and feel, but a bit tired in places. although the entrance and atrium are great still, just needing more guests. OH, and gym and warm pool in need of an urgent upgrade! Just sad that we were the only ones there, practically!

Was very nice, bed was comfy but may cause neck pains because of the pillows but that's an easy fix, all ground floor rooms need a door out to the grass though so that you can enjoy the afternoon sun!

I stayed in this hotel when it first opened many years ago and was blown away by how big the rooms are (huge! = fantastic). Pulling up to the hotel it was apparent that the hotel is now very tired and although the important things appear to have been kept up - bedding / linen, towelling, flat screen tv are all great, the outside needs at least a waterblast […] but also a lick of paint and all the curtains and drapes are rotten hence ripped and old so the edges are frayed and scruffy. Read in a lot of reviews that the hotel lobby was excellent and the rooms were old and worn out. I have to agree those reviews. The lobby looks recently renovated and the atrium were breakfast and dinner is served is good but it ends there. We only had a couple of breakfast buffet which came with our room deal and it was good. We ordered room service […] twice and was dissapointed. The first time we ordered wedges and we were told they ran out of sour cream and a request to discount the price was declined. The second time we ordered a pudding with ice cream and found a plastic sharpnel in it. We reported to the reception and the service manager came to the room to investigate. The amount was refunded and advised he would investigate. Also, the guest laundry had 2 washers,2 dryers for the entire hotel and it was always busy. Overall, it did not live up to the rydges hotel and resorts reputation and would not recommend for a longer stay.This hotel does not deserve a 4.5 star just bcoz it has a great lobby and a pool. Asked for a non-smoking room, yet we had an astray. There we no sliding doors to the outside area. Door into the spa did not close. Swimming pool not really that nice to be in. The standards have declined since our last stay (2 yrs ago). The dinning area still has water leaks. The sheets a linen are now no longer ironed, so it isnot certain if the bed has been changed nice the last occupant. The accommodation floors need an uplift especially on the hallways. - Peeling and tattered wallpaper, very aged.
