Swissotel Merchant Court - Singapore

I travel pretty much full time. And simply put this is my favorite hotel in the world. It's not the biggest, it's not the fanciest but it feels like home. The people actually seem to care of that you have an excellent stay.

We had two rooms, a double for my wife and I, and a twin for our two kids. While the rooms weren't nearby as requested, they were on the same floor, and were both quite spacious. The location is good. One of the best groups of restaurants and pubs in Singapore is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel and yet the room was quite. I cannot even begin to describe how triple this hotel felt. Steps fromit the MRT, on the waterfront in the heart of Clarke Quay, the location is superb. The staff was always friendly and efficient, the room was quite large ,and the entire place was spotless .

We wanted to take a break in the afternoon and entered a room that was very noisy from construction work being done in the adjacent room. When asked to stop, the contractor was rude and refused to stop. Our nap was spoiled. Very nice hotel in an excellent location. Clark Quay with its (expensive) restaurants and bars is literally a one minute walk. The subway station is a two minutes walk, or three minutes if you want to pass a Starbucks. China town, with its hustle, bustle and equally good, but MUCH cheaper, restaurants is ten minutes walk, or one subway stop away.

Great Hotel !! Great Location !! ... next to many restaurants and bars for day and night life The service at the hotel is very good ! My husband and I received a very nice surprice in our room since we were celebrating our anniversary =) The hotel is next to a very famous seafood restaurant named JUMBO, delicious chilli crab!

The hotel is clean and efficiently run, however the rooms are very small with minimal amenities. What this hotel does have is it's SUPERB location right on Clarke's Quay, with hundreds of restaurants, bars, etc. within meters of your front door. It's worth it on location alone in my opinion.

The Reception staff was not very courteous, when they found that I had a pre-paid booking through hotels.com They were not ready to provide me better view rooms on a higher floor, although they were not full. No FREE WIFI, which is surprising in this Cyber world and when Singapore Airport offers FREE WIFI. Not a very friendly and welcoming place.

The Merchant Court is in an excellent location directly along the Singapore river. Beds are very comfortable and the rooms are reasonable size, although the TV was an older, small CRT unit. Overall it's a good quality hotel, but the hallways and elevator areas looked quite "worn" with stains on the wallpaper and carpeting. Also, when checking in or […] out they have no "line" so 3 different people were able to cut in front of people waiting. When I mentioned this to the clerk at the front desk they only handed me a comment form but did nothing to stop the people that had clearly walked directly in front of 4 groups waiting to check out. The only thing good about this hotel is location! The rest is a mediocre hotel which boasts the Swiss hospitality to no evidence. As start, the AC in our room was not functioning well, and the repair took over an hour in the middle of the night! They did offer to change the room, but my mother was asleep and to move our stuff in the middle of the night […] would be a hustle. The SPA does not employe enough people. We were staying for 3 days and no single occassion any therapist was available. We ordered the kimono which did not come to our room until I complaint several times. Then, the kimono purchase was not included in our hotel bill. We were nice enough to remind them. One of the waitress was rude enough not to let us use the connecting door to reach Clark Quay, thanks God there were other nice waitresses who showed us the shortest way to get out. The breakfast buffet was a disappointment. It was included in our room rate so we ate there the first day and promptly tried to remove it from the rate for days 2 and 3 but could not. Regardless we did not go back and ate elsewhere the next two days. Layout of the rooms was awkward and bathroom fixtures were old.

I loved staying at this hotel. I was upgraded to a corner room with a view of the river, and it was magical. Staying here made me not want to leave Singapore. There is a wonderful organic coffee shop and food place across the street that I looked forward to enjoying breakfast at each morning.

We finished our cruise in Singapore. Only $40 SD from the cruise terminal for four of us by taxi. Close to Chinatown and located next to Clarke Quay on the Singapore river. Vibrant eating and walking area after dark. The Hotel was excellent. Service outstanding. Loved it.

Having flown from Heathrow, we weren't ready for the slack check-in procedures, where the desk person discovered that there were no non-smoking queen beds available (that was our stated request, some weeks earlier), so we were kept waiting for some time while several of them juggled things. The internet service was adequate but badly overpriced at […] some $19 for 24 hours (and the wifi didn't work). We had booked without breakfast and when we decided to eat there on the second morning, we were asked to sign for full buffet at $62 (for 2). We only wanted continental, and were assured we could order a la carte. We did, and found ourselves charged $58 for muesli, coffee and orange juice. A single beer, ordered at the poolside, was $18. Next time, we'll go back to the Novotel, just across the river. It had views, far better service and far more reasonable charges. The road outside the Novotel is also far safer to walk on. Read more

We were very pleased with this hotel. The location -- right on the Singapore River and across the street from the Clark Quay MRT -- is very convenient. There's a great promenade along the river with periodic markers describing the history and significance of places along the way. Many historical sights are within a 15 to 20 minute walk from the hotel. […] There are lots of restaurants close by, a huge shopping center across the street (the Central), and a supermarket in the basement of the Novotel about 15 minutes walk across the river. The hotel itself is very nice. Although we could tell that the tub and nightstands were a bit old, their condition did not bother us because everything in our room was clean and functioned well. The carpeting, bed linens and mattress were nice and seemed relatively new. As in most SE Asian hotels, the bed had a thin down comforter when we would have preferred something lighter. We also would have liked windows screens and a fan so that we wouldn't have needed to use the air conditioner at night. The hotel's Market Cafe had a reasonably priced ala carte menu. Our only complaint about the hotel is what seemed to us the excessively high wifi charge. We solved this by using the internet cafe around the corner. There is also free wifi at Starbucks in the Central shopping center across the street, but you need a Singapore cell phone number to make it work. You also have to provide your passport number, exact hotel address including room number and a lot of other info. Read more

If location were all that mattered, Swissotel Merchant Court would be a great place to stay. It is adjacent to Clarke Quay, an entertainment district with dozens of great restaurants and bars. I arrived at 1 a.m. after flying for 21 hours from the States, and the drunks and partiers outside did not quiet down until after 5 a.m. This was true for each of the 3 nights I was there. Even during the daytime, the normal street noises are problematic. The room itself was nothing special. The furniture was old and tired. The service at the hotel was indifferent. This hotel seems to have decided that people will stay there because of the location and that it does not need to make an effort to make its guests comfortable. Read more

For the price you pay to stay in hotels in Singapore, the hotel overall was definitely not bad. The Deluxe Room itself we stayed in was not as clean as I'd expect from a 4-star property like this hotel claims it is but the rest of the property was really nice and well kept. I do wonder if they are aware that jacuzzis are supposed to be hot since it […] was as freezing as the pool was, even with the jets on. We were very disappointed with that since we were looking forward to soothing our tired bodies from walking everywhere. You absolutely cannot beat the location of this hotel with it being on the river next to all the shops and next to an MRT station. I do not recommend the food at the Blue Potato (they butchered an American classic for me) but the Market Cafe buffet was tasty and offered a diverse selection with American and local fare. If you are looking for a soft bed, you may have to look to visit another country since everyone I knew that visited and stayed in other hotels also had rock hard beds like we did. I believe it may be an Asian culture thing. Also, maybe it was because we didn't have a suite, but the TV and channel options definitely needed some overhauling. Read more

I was excited to stay at this hotel as it was recommended by friends. Everything was ready when we checked into the hotel. Upon reaching our floor I noticed the smell of cigarette smoke on our floor. Our room also smelled of smoke. We had requested a non-smoking room, and received a non-smoking room but it was on a smoking floor. We had to change rooms […] the next day and I was not impressed with the customer service. It was a lot of work to re-pack and unpack after 1 day at the hotel. My other complaints, a free paper is not provided at the room. Also there isn't any complimentary water in the room. The worst thing is the internet is $30 SGD a day. That is extrememly high price. Internet should come with the room. I feel that for the price there are much nicer hotels in the Marina distirct with better customer service and better amenities. The best thing about the hotel is the location. It is right in the heart of Clark Quay and a short walk to Boat Quay. It is right next to an ATM and the MRT. It is a short walk to Chinatown.
