"Good location but really not a good hotel/room"
The area is prime as it's right there in middle of Union Square area. THe hotel was so hard to find, took us an hour, as the sign isn't well positioned. The parking wasn't there, so we had to find public parking for our overnight stay. The room was not updated, very old carpet and and style. You can tell they tried to update a little, but not much. […] The bed was really small for some reason even as it was a queen. Also wasn't that comfortable. he worst are the thin walls. Around 4am, you start hearing all kind of noise. Noise from the rooms next door, from people pulling and walking and talking in the hallway. Felt so paper thin walls. I even heard one of the guest comment to the lady doing the up keeping how thin the walls etc as he was exiting (yes, from my bed). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"I would stay again"
The room we had was very noisy. That being said, I would stay here again and request a less noisy room because the location was awesome and the hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Powell Hotel Erinn-- Next time you stay with us, we recommend that you request one of our interior facing guest rooms for a less noisy experience. We are happy that our location and service exceeded expectations, and hope to welcome you back again soon!
"Old World Charm in downtown SF"
I found this hotel to be charming and perfectly located. It was such a relief that arrive from the airport, coming up the escalator for the BART and literally seeing the hotel! My room was small, clean and functional. It was no nonsense and reminded me of the smaller, non chain European hotels. It's true that there is no air conditioning units in the […] room, but I stayed in December. Since I was concerned about noise, they gave me a room at the top floor. I never heard the cable car once, nor the demonstration going on outside. I will definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Powell Hotel Karen--Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are pleased that you enjoyed our old world charm throughout our hotel and close proximity to the BART station. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back again once our renovations are completed next year.
"San Francisco Classic"

"Hotel Powell - Launching Pad to the City!"
As a last minute Thanksgiving vacation, we wanted a budget-friendly, week-end, get-away vacation in San Francisco and wanted to be on or near Union Square -- The Powell hit on all marks! The front desk gave us a warm welcome and upgraded us to nice, large room away from Powell Street where the tourist gather to watch the trolley turn-around. Although […] we we were on the second floor, any street noise quickly became background noise and we slept through the night on our King-size bed. This is a historic hotel -- meaning there are evidence of worn imperfections and unique charm. The room had the basic essentials -- nice bed and linen, good size bathroom, walk-in closet, flat screen t.v., desk, night stands and lamps. The room was radiant heat so you have to turn the knob to open the valve and adjust to your liking. We used the ceiling fan to circulate the warmth and when too warm, cracked the window. Location, location, location! Right on Powell and about forty steps to the Bart Station -- totally convenient. We're big into public transportation and walking to sight see. We walked everywhere and I mean everywhere -- the Hotel Powell was our launching pad to the city! Our morning, day and nights, we explored the city, sat in cafes, dined out, shopped and did touristy things. The hotel is where we rested and re-charged. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Powell Hotel robert-- It is rewarding to hear that the Powell Hotel hit on all marks in terms of our location and great price proposition. Also, we are happy that you were upgraded to a larger guest room upon arrival. Our hotel is a great launching pad to exploring the San Francisco area, and we're glad to hear that we were a great fit for you and your family.
"Great location, no air conditioning"
The location of the hotel is perfect--right at the cable car stop and next to all the shopping. However, the room did not have air conditioning so after a day it smelled musty from the small not well ventilated bathroom. The beds were not very comfortable and the fan in the room used for cooling and air circulation had a light that kept shorting out. […] The hotel staff was very nice and friendly though a housekeeper entered the room to clean the bathroom while I was sleeping, which was awkward. The hotel did have a free pastry breakfast and happy hour. This hotel is good for one or two people but not more than that. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Powell Hotel Kimberly- We regret if the lack of an in-room HVAC unit caused any inconvenience, but heat is a rare occurrence here in San Francisco, since the weather typically is between 60 and 70 degrees throughout the year during the day. It appears the light in your guest room was not functioning optimally, and hope that you addressed this concern with one of our team members while you were a guest of ours. We can assure you that it is not our standard to clean an occupied guest room without getting permission from the guest first, and will be sure to address internally. If given another opportunity, we hope to welcome you back for a much improved experience.
Great location. There is a small breakfest, but only donut and coffee. It is much better to use the small coffeeshop, which is in the lobby - they have great food to a good price. It is an old hotel that has been renovated with paint. You can hear whats happens on the street - I find that nice:-) There is free wifi, however, it is not always that […] fast! Response by The Powell Hotel Marc- Thank you for praising our central location! We are flattered to hear that you would return to us again on your next trip to San Francisco!
"Hard to sleep"
Since they have very thin walls it was hard to get to sleep. You could hear conversations down the hall and people including employees would walk by and it was loud. The gap between the door and frame was at least half an inch and you could see through it. The light continental breakfast was just juice and donuts.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Powell Hotel We regret to learn of the noise interruptions you endured while sleeping, and apologize for the inconvenience. Please be aware that there will be extensive renovations happening at the start of January, and we hope to welcome you back for a much quieter sleep experience next time.

Response by The Powell Hotel Brenda- Being in the heart of the City there indeed is a lot of activity, and regret if the noise caused any inconvenience. We do have rooms that are interior facing and hope next time you visit the city you might give one of these a try.
Great stay! The staff was friendly and outstanding. Front desk made every effort to help with early check-in and any needs that came up. Hotel itself has charm. Never minded the apparent age (squeaky stairs etc..) as it seemed appropriate for an older place like this. The sheets were a bit "worn" on the edges, but certainly clean and comfortable. The […] location is awesome. Easy access to BART, Cable Cars, Market St. and Union Square. I attended a conference at The Marriott just two block away... saved a TON of money and enjoyed the breakfast coffee and donuts to get me started each morning. I'd stay here again next year, and I'm told renovations are due soon... as long as they keep the staff! ;) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Response by The Powell Hotel Adam- You will be pleased to know that we will be begin refurbishing the hotel beginning in January, 2015.
Don't be lured into staying here. The location is great; the hotel is not. There was a strong smell throughout the building and in my room that reminded me of an elderly person's house. It was so strong that it actually woke me up a few times during the night. The bed coverings are very sparse and my showerhead was broken. Overall a terrible, overpriced […] experience. "Good location, needs new windows."
Room was clean but it was so loud we didn't get any sleep. The windows are so thin and road construction started at 7am on a SATURDAY!!! When you checkin make sure you ask for an 'inside room' with no windows. "Loved this hotel!"
We enjoyed our stay here. Great location for transportation services. Close to many great points of interest. We loved all of the original woodworking inside as it added to the San Francisco feel. Having the coffee shop in the lobby was great and I enjoyed a delicious cuban latte while waiting for the cable car just outside the front door. The service […] here was fantastic and friendly. Everyone at the front desk was helpful. We were very pleased they locked up our luggage for us at no extra charge so we could continue our sight seeing the last day we were there since our flight wasn't until that evening. "Great service and staff"
Great service, the room was a little cramped, but it is in the heart of a big city. I went for a work conference so the price was elevated, wouldn't normally pay over $400/night to stay here.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Old Hotel. Excellent Location"
Perfect Union Square location for direct access to shopping and dining. The hotel is an older, no frills establishment. The rooms are just OK. The hallways are loud. Check in service was excellent. "Clean hotel in the heart of San Francisco"
Hotel in great location; very clean; staff very nice, helpful & gave prompt assistance. It's an old bldg so bathroom has one sink, there is no A/C but there was a ceiling fan and we opened the window and we were comfortable. Good mattress. However when we arrived, box of tissue had only one tissue in it & sink was clogged. It took about 2 mins. to […] drain. We were in a hurry to leave for an event & left early next day so didn't bother to call maintenance. Suggest room gets checked before a guest moves in. Did not care for the breakfast. Had only very sugary and frosted doughnuts. No plain rolls with jam or honey or let's say oatmeal or cereal. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I go to SF two times a year. This Hotel was OK for the price. This is an old hotel like many SF hotels. I like old but my room was next to the elevator which squeaked every time it was used and the noise radiated into the room. My room faced Powell and was right above the cable car turn around. However, the noise in the morning did not let me sleep […] in. A street performer was " bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee". After that, a banjo player, after that a singer. A couple was fighting at 3 in the morning in the street. The window was old and did not block noise. Also pull drapes were not available and so in the morning the room lit up so with the noise and light no sleeping in. So if quiet is a must for you, you should get an interior room, away from the elevator and without a window on powell Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Adequate - close to activities and transportation"
We stayed at the Powell because we were taking in a show at the Orpheum. It was recommended to us by friends for its proximity to Union Square and public transportation and it met those criteria. The rooms themselves are clean but dated as is the lobby. There are no real amenities to speak of, but they do have a complimentary happy hour (which we did […] not take advantage of-doing other things-and can't speak to) and a "light" continental breakfast. The person that checked us in stressed "light" several times and that's exactly what it is. Coffee, tea, juices and donuts or croissants. The breakfast area is small and it was crowded. Personnel were friendly. The place is reasonably priced compared to other downtown hotels and served its purpose for one night. If we had been staying longer, I don't think I would have been happy there. Parking was and additonal $41. (The website and the in-room info said $31. We were charged $41 but adjusted the price when we called it to their attention.) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I only stayed a night while traveling through the Bay area. I just needed a decent place to stay. Place is an old hotel--small rooms, old style architecture, history. Some renovations must've been done but not very well--peeling wallpaper in the small bathroom with what looks like black mold on the wall. Rug felt "used." "If it is only about price and location"
Great location not far from Union Station. Check-in was a pleasant experience. Hotel is in old building, old elevators (sound a bit unsafe when riding), partial carpeted and wood hallways that make squeaking noises, and numerous paint jobs covering the walls. Our room was small and the carpet looked dirty. The bathroom was small and the shower was small […] closet size and there was mold on the curtain. Water leaked onto the nearby rotting woodwork. "Perfect location, perfect stay"
I recently stayed here with my two teenagers. The staff, specifically Theresa, were attentive, timely, helpful and pleasant. The hotel is old, which was why I chose it. I wanted a hotel that had history, and the Powell fit the bill. The location is perfect; close to Union Square and ideally situated next to the cable cars. If you are looking for a hotel […] that has easy access to all types of transportation, look no further. Yes it can be loud at night, but any hotel in the middle of the city is going to have its share of sirens and traffic noise. The beds were comfortable but could use a mattress topper to make them softer. The continental breakfast was good, but they did run out of sugar, a major bummer first thing in the morning. Be sure to check your final bill, the hotel charged more for both parking and the room than I was guaranteed when I booked. Not to worry, THeresa gladly adjusted the bill and we were on our way. I would definitely stay here again! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
