"Excellent accommodation at a good price."
The hotel was in a very convenient location, close to transportation to get around San Francisco. Easy access to the good restaurants and best shopping. Also close by to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Very friendly and helpful staff. Easy wifi connection.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Only good thing is its location. Everything else was HORRIBLE.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
good location but too noisy at night and no heat they probably turn on about 2 hours other than that we like it .......Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The entire town was sold out due to conventions on my spontaneous getaway weekend. I found this hotel and felt as though the third world small town hotels I have stayed in were better. It was horrible. The front desk staff were friendly and tried to be very accomodating...but the rooms (I saw 4 before settling!!) were filthy, in serious disrepair, un-maintatined […] and my room...hard to believe, was WITHOUT a heater. The hotel has probably gotten by on its location. If it were the last hotel in town I would NOT stay at the Powell as it is. I only hope the right owners and management will step in...it could be amazing in this location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Avoid This Place!"
This hotel is in a building that was built in 1909. Unless you have a taste for antique hotels, you might want to avoid this one, even though it is nice and cheap. It actually has TWIN BEDS! This is okay if you are traveling alone, but do not expect it to impress anyone. Also, prepare toe hear ever emergency vehicle in San Francisco to pass by at all […] hours of the day and night with sirens wailing very loudly. Our hotel is a historic landmark originally built in 1908. There is something to say about our intimate space, historic charm, gracious service, and central location near Union Square. We strive to provide a great experience to all of our guests and are sorry that we fell short in your case. -The Powell Hotel Team
"Location, location, location!"
Literally a few steps outside the hotel is the cable car turn around and one of the few places you can buy the cable car weekend passes. The room we had must have been one of the more updated ones compared to the other reviews I read. Our room had no odor and seemed fairly up to date. Our room also was quiet, however we noticed no rooms were on either […] side of us. We called as we were close to the city and because our room was ready they even allowed us to check in early, which helped a lot! In reading other reviews I didn't expect a big breakfast and it literally is juice, coffee, muffins and croisants. We came on an off weekend and so the price was right too. We enjoyed our stay! "Not a Three Star Property - Small and Cramped"
Overall, the location of the hotel is great. However, this is a very old hotel and it is very small. The rooms are much smaller than was outlined online. Additionally, there was very little sound-proofing between rooms, so you were able to hear anyone walking down the hallway or playing tv in the room next door. I would not recommend this hotel, except […] for a last resource. Bathroom was clean, but it is not worth the price point. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Close to everything but noisy and cold"
The heater is ridiculously small and only was turned on after 7 pm and turned off around 11pm so the room was very cold by the middle of the night. We received one (!) blanket and a very small space heater when complained. Also, windows let all the street noise in.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Poor service, dirty space. Great location...."
Customer service is terrible. They just don't seem to care too much. The place is a bit dirty and outdated. It's too bad cause location is fabulous! I do recommend the valet. You can come in and out all day for a flat rate.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Very courteous staff. Good value if you're not overly particular. Was given an upgrade because bed configuration wasn't available. Older hotel with personality. Bathroom small and needs remodeling. "In the Heart of San Francisco"
Overall the Powell Hotel, I enjoyed my stay. I checked in at about 6:30 PM and the clerk let me know that they only room they had available in my category overlooked the street car turnaround. He said that the noise would die down after about 9:00. But if it was a problem they could change the room for the next night. Not really the street cars ran […] until about midnight and due to the transient nature of denizens of Union Square there were arguments. Rather than change rooms, I accepted the noise, which I could tolerate. The happy hour was pleasant and breakfast was coffee and muffins, that was OK, too. The staff was all pleasant and the guy taking care of happy hour and breakfast was very personable. I had lived in SF before and worked down in Union Square so I knew what I was getting into by booking a hotel down there. If you want peace, quiet and no panhandling outside the hotel--stay elsewhere in the city. If you want to be right there in the thick of things, the Powell Hotel is a reasonably priced option with friendly staff and clean rooms, in a classic San Francisco structure. It's in dire need of updating. The first thing I noticed is the smell. It smells old, the paint is dirty and chipping, and the floors squeak to name a few things. "Great if its an emergency !"
Honestly, I rarely write reviews, but felt it would be a disservice not to in this case. from the start, it was not pleasant. I waited 30 minutes for valet to park my car and had to double park in a very busy location, avoiding drivers. Person at desk told me that I couldn't leave the car or I was on my own ! Wasn't even nice about it. Room smelled […] terribly of mold and other things which I cant even determine. There was hair on my sheets- not mine ! I travel for a living and it was just not a pleasant hotel stay. In fact this area of Union Square where the hotel is located is somewhat shaky. There were literally and sadly homeless people laying in the street that I had to step over. I come to SF every year and this was the worst I have ever seen. Next time I will choose another hotel and area of the city. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel is in a terrific location. Some are bothered by the noise from the cable car turn around but it is expected in a city. Biggest issue is the quality of the rooms and bathrooms. "Cute little hotel!!!!"
My best friend and I just wanted a few days in Frisco, chose this hotel. "Great service, great location"
This hotel is really terrifically located in the Union Square area. The staff is really nice and helpful. The hotel itself is not a modern luxury hotel, although it was nice enough and a great value for the price. It is vintage, classic old SF hotel with a decent remodel -- but it's not the Marriott. That said, the rooms were clean, bedding was comfortable. […] My bathroom had been recently remodeled and was small but nice. "Great location, average service"
Location is excellent and hotel is very close to BART station, Muni lines, cable car up Powell Street, and Union Square. I booked a special with free parking, but I had to circle the block once because the valet has no attendant and the valet only curb spots were full of unattended cars. You must call the front desk from your car to get them to make […] room and eventually someone will valet your car. Check-in was quick but clerk kept my credit card and ID until I realized he didn't return them--a minor inconvenience but indicative of their overall attitude and level of professionalism. Hotel is nice old boutique style with small but adequate rooms. My room was missing an ice bucket liner. Other guests were fairly noisy but I didn't mind. Street traffic and people were noisy too. Outstanding location near the Powell Street Cable car and a fantastic price. The only issue is the hotel is old and the rooms are dated. The guest service was horrible. Our first day there they ran out of their breakfast about 40 minutes before 9. Felt like we had to cause a riot to get any help. "Do Not Stay Here!!"
It is very hard to locate. The front of the hotel is on Powell, which is what the photo shows. However, you drop your car off in the back on a different street. We came at dusk, and the sign at the back of the hotel is unlit. We passed by. It is on a one way street, so circling around is difficult. We called for directions. The desk person was unclear. […] When we finally walked in, they could not check us in, as their computers were down. I asked why they did not call. He shrugged his shoulders. We were headed for an event and needed to change our clothes. We were directed to a restroom on the second floor. FILTHY. I mentioned this to the same person at the desk. No response. Clearly not trained in customer service. This is a service business, right? We checked in later that night. Room was poor. Hallway had bad odor. Neighbors were noisy. TV was not working. I asked for a replacement. They did not have one. They offered to move us to another room. This room did not have any heat, and it was cold. I asked for a blanket and heater. Maintenance, not housekeeping, brought the heater and blanket. I could not get the heater to work. I flagged down the maintenance man in the hallway to let him know. He yelled at me saying I was wrong, and that he had tried it before bringing it up. They charge $38 a day to valet your car. We asked to have our car brought to the hotel. We were told 30 minutes!! "A Good, Very Noisy Deal Near Union Square"
For a one night's stay, this is not a bad deal. The price (a last minute deal) was great and came with FREE parking -- worth $38/night. However, our room was right above the turn-around point for the cable cars and was very noisy. The hotel needs double-paned windows desperately.
