"Dirty room with no hot water and broken toilet"
Grear location & the front of the building looks nice but it's more like a dirty hostel than a hotel. Pay no more than $50!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I booked this based on a competitively low rate. The room was clean, small, and quaint. The water pressure was an issue. It sure beat a $300+ booking for a bed and bath, but left an overall feeling of underwhelmed. Be careful if you're outside.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was a bit old, but had a lot of character. Valet Parking was a pain. Waited almost a half hour to retrieve my car on checkout. Continental breakfast was minimal. Coffee shop downstairs had good coffee. First Crush restaurant highly recommended.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old school and historic"
Well, the room was very small, but clean and easy to use. The only issue I have is with the noise from the street below. I understand that is out of the control of the hotel. But with the window slightly open, to much noise and with it closed to stuffy. Oh well, other than that, a pleasant stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Worst in recent memory - avoid - noisy and dirty"
This hotel is very old, which is fine by me but at least clean the rooms properly. They are due for a visit from Hotel Impossible. Dirty carpets, hairs all over bathroom, noisy hardwood floor hallway, maids stoping around at 8am, chipped paint and dirt smudges on the walls, worn carpet everywhere, mold and chipped finish in the shower, ancient WaterPik […] shower head that I was afraid to touch, floor mat towel that looked older than me. Total disappointment. Oh, and the guy who sets up the free wine/beer happy hour started it an hour late. This location is Ground Zero for Tourists in SF which personally I try to avoid. The location is very noisy and there was morning construction nearby. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Recent Remodel Great for the Theater"
This turn of the century hotel was recently remodeled. A little noisy and street people are a little aggressive. But, all-in-all, was great for two nights at the theaters in 5 min walking distance. LOTS of places to eat.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was ok...room too small for two beds...probably fine for a King. Bathroom had a little mold in the shower. Staff seemed VERY nice and accomodating.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"OLD HOTEL, BAD EXPERIENCE"
IT DOESN'T WORK FOR THE MONEY, VERY OUTDATED, VERY SMALL BATHROOM, NO AC THE ALL, NOISE,Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Bad smell ruined the experience"
The hotel is in a great location near the Powel BART stop. It is an old hotel with small, European style rooms but is well maintained. My only problem is that on my floor and room at least, the smell was overpowering. I hate to be crude, but to me it smelled of human excrement. That smell was not present in the lobby. I didn't know how to reflect that […] in the ratings above so I used the comfort score mainly - it was not comfortable breathing in the room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
From the moment we got there the front desk attendants were rude. We specifically asked about valet parking and we're instructed to park at a public parking lot via phone. When I start signing going over the paperwork, the attendant asks if I wanted valet parking. I told him on wasn't given that option when I called and had already paid for public parking. […] I then got upset because they said they always offer it. I asked if he could do anything on the hotels part to fix the situation and he said in because it was my mistake and should have paid attention. This got me super upset... I had no choice but to stay there since I'd already paid for the room. NEVER GOING BACK. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
the first room i got stinks. ti smells like feces. the second room i got transferred to also smells but not as bad. "comfortable room at reasonable price"
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the room was for the price. It had all the amenities in the room that I appreciate-like coffee maker, iron, blow dryer. It was comfortable and very convenient and more quiet than I suspected.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"old woman with a lipstick makeover"
The hotel has been updated but the age still shows, sometimes quaint, sometimes just old. Stay across the street at the Parc 55 for the same money in a modern hotel. The room was clean, the linen was good. Not my first choice but I would stay there again. It would be a good experience for someone who wants to step back 100 years for the ambiance.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Service was very friendly and helpful. Location is perfect if you like shopping, as it is right in the thick of it. Our room was small, but nice. Love that they offer happy hour and breakfast. Both were great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good hotel stay, not the best"
Great central location in Union Square. Not very helpful if you are bringing a car as you have to find a spot to park on the side street so it can be valeted. Otherwise, it was a good stay but not the best stay I've had.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel has old world charm. The front desk staff was very helpful. The location was excellent close to all modes of transportation. We were surprised that there is no air-conditioning in the rooms, but not to worry the staff brought up a fan and it was quite comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
They charged $43.00 for parking. I thought that was very excessive for 1 night for hotel guest.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Awesome, loved the welcome appetizer and free drnksGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old style hotel in great location"
The hotel was built in the early 20th century so the rooms are small by today's standards. It has lots of charm and the location is ideal. There is no air conditioning so you have to sleep with the windows open if it is warm. This is fine but can be noisy if you are not used to city sounds.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Powell hotel is newly renovated. Easy access from muni and Bart both are just out the door. Nevermind the breakfast. We recommend a room high up with a window onto the courtyard as cable car tourism starts early and ends late. We slept great! Cannot be beat for the price. Enjoy!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"In the heart of the action"
A wonderful Hotel! Clean, comfortable, excellent staff! For anyone looking for a vintage hotel, with the "out of the box" feel I would highly recommend it. Located next to the BART, the cable car turn around station, and restaurants it is a perfect stay for those of us who choose public transportation.Genuine Expedia guest review
Room did not have towels and wet towels and bedding were left on the floor of the room when I walked in. The fan did not work either. Granted it was a busy holiday weekend- but I felt they gave me whatever was not sold.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great hotel in perfect location"
The Powell Hotel offers a comfortable stay in a great location in downtown San Francisco. Wouldn't hesitate to stay on my next visit to the city...Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Inexpensive and a value, but..."
The lack of screens or air conditioning/fans left me with a conflict of allowing the noise of the neighborhood in or sweltering in a stagnant environment. The noise from the pedestrian alarms on the parking garage exits, the bar in the hotel next door emptying their bottles every hour into a large dumpster, and the random homeless person yelling incoherently […] - left me with very little sleep or if I closed the windows - sweating like a pig. The location was near perfect for everything business and pleasure, within walking distance. Moscone center, market street, and union square... And the Powell line trolley is right out the door to get you to Fisherman's Wharf. The hotel ammenities are spartan. The nightly social hour is nice but don't expect breakfast in the morning or room service. If you rely on Internet for business, bring your own - the wifi is a joke. You'll see a dozen hotel access points but get dropped regularly - seriously need to hire a professional that knows what they're doing here. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Will not return"
No valet parking. They let us, 2 ladies, wait double-parked in the car for 15 minutes at 11pm. Valet still did not appear. We parked in a lot around the corner. When I complained at the front desk, I was met with blank stares, no apology. Room was facing Powell, it was clean, a draft came through the window and street noise came through, as if it were […] open at some point. It was not. Apparently, we were the last guests to check in that night, no other room was available, according to front desk. Renovated bathroom included $38 vanity from Home Depot. I will not return. "LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION"
NICE BOUTIQUE HOTEL . My room was TINY. the sink was in a closet. nicely decorated, comfy bed. i had 2 ft of space around the three sides of the bed. definitely a single person roomGenuine Expedia guest review
Super location sandwiched in between Sephora and Forever 21 right on Union Square. Valet was really good and lenient, as we left our car with them for over 24 hours with no extra charge. We didn't even look at the breakfast or cocktails which were complimentary. Bed was tiny and really uncomfortable, which made us so tired and irritable for the next […] day. do not recommend this hotel - paper thin walls and smelly roomGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is in a great location. We stayed in room 505 which is above cable car turn around. If you want a quiet night I suggest not staying on that side of the hotel. The windows and blinds were quite difficult to open. The closet door would not remain closed and paint on the walls was poorly applied. Bottom line, maintenance needs to step it up!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Poorly run hotel."
We had many problems with our stay. The room was not very clean and had spots of black mold around the bathroom window. The wifi was spotty in the rooms and even on the hotel provided computer in the lobby. Worst of all there was a situation in the hallway on the second night of our stay - with someone trying to break down a door - they beat on the […] door for nearly 30 minutes before I finally called the front desk myself to notify them. The front desk took more than an hour to resolve the situation. (This start well after midnight). Overall a very disappointing stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Enjoyed our stay. Hot in San Francisco, but no AC in room. Staff brought a fan. OK after that. Great staff!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Relatively cheap hotel for the area."
It's an old hotel with no AC and only a broken, leaky, water-heater looking thing as a temperature moderator. The alternatives are hotels that are 3-4 hundred dollars a night. Therefore, I would likely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We stayed at this hotel to be near a concert we attended. I've never end stayed overnight in San Francisco before. I'm not sure how the rates usually are but it was ok. The staff was nice even though it took a long time to find my reservation. Parking is pricy and it was difficult to get a spot to park for valet. All in all it was ok and I would stay […] again. "Great Location. Old Hotel"
If you are traveling the location is important. There is a cable car station right in front of the hotel that goes all the way up to Fishermen's wharf which is great. The hotel itself is old. The parking for a night was $43 so be prepared if you are going to bring a car. Parking on O'Farrell st is better $31. And try to make a trip around n you might […] find one cheaper. The hotel was okay but the worst thing happen so i cannot give more than 3 stars. While i was taking a shower upon my arrival, a super huge roach was noticed on the wall. OMG. I screamed and just finished my shower super fast while the roach still moving there on the wall. I call the front and someone came and catch it for me. It was horrible. I asked the front desk if i can cancel my rest of the stay and get another hotel. He said i can do it. So i just slept for that night and was going to move to another hotel. I had a meeting early morning next day so i could not move from the morning. The guy in the front told me that he can give me a larger from for the incident that happen. I accepted. The new room was nice and i could look at the cable car station from my room so the view was nice too. The other two days were okay. But that roach was just too big. "Don't stay at Powell"
I did not enjoy it at all. The TV would not work right. Atmosphere was gloomy. The maintenance person they eventually (after 3 calls) sent up to help us with a room problem looked unkept and even "shady." (I didn't want to open the door to him after I saw his appearance.) The "complimentary" breakfast was a joke: uncomfortable room/seating, bad food, […] bad environment. The room cost was far too high. I will NEVER book a room there again. Great location. Just a few feet from the BART station and Cable car. All of the staff I encountered were very friendly and more than helpful. The room was more than adequate. I would definitely stay at the Powell again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small rooms and too expensive"
The rooms are quite small. I had booked a room for my sister and me with two doubles, but they gave us a room with only one bed. They said that was all they had. We asked for a rollaway, which they gave us but charged $15, when I thought it should have been comped. It's pretty expensive for what you get; however the bed (and even the rollaway) was comfortable. […] The rooms are pretty quiet, considering the location. "Your own private deal right in the middle of town."
The Powell is understated. It is a classic San Francisco hotel (built over 100 years ago,) with an incredible location. Read the other posts about tough to find and the parking then I can tell you that if you follow your GPS and do a self park in one of the many garages within a block, you will not be disappointed. The rate was incredible and the smile […] behind the counter was quality. The room/sheets were clean and complementary breakfast and beverages though not expansive was fresh and a nice touch. "nice hotel but parking stinks"
Nice old hotel great location for the money. Beware of parking though, it's expensive and even after giving 45 minutes lead time we waited another hour before the car showed upGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel is located on the busiest street in the area verry small rooms and very hard to get a good nights sleep do not stay hereGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Dont be fooled"
I was fooled by the photos that this would be a nice hotel. The unclean lobby alone would have sent me running except I had already paid for the room. The staff was curt and not super-helpful. The rooms were not that clean and for just a bit more I can stay at the Villa Florence a block away and it is much nicer.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect for shopping not for parking"
The room was very nice for our family of four! The complimentary snack breakfast was good! It was great because it was right by cable car line and shopping. The only thing I thought was a little high was the parking of $43 but then again it's San FranciscoGenuine Expedia guest review
