"Cheap and great location"Reviewed by Henriette of "Odense, Denmark" on Apr 1, 2012
We spent 14 night at this hotel and enjoyed it very much. The beds are done and the towels changed every day. Good value for the money. Also we had a kitchen, so we cooked our own breakfast - the dishes were done immediately. The only bad thing was the noise from the garbage trucks starting at 7 a.m. The location is good as well, bus stop is just outside the door and all the shops are a short walk away. The beach is only 10 minutes away.

Tired hotel but clean, quiet and brilliantly located especially if with a car. Breakfast is basic to say the least but it works. Overall we were pleasantly surprised but don't expect anything fancy.

Having read the previous reviews on hotels.com, checked all the hotel details, and 'walked' round the location using google streetview, what we found when we arrived was that "it was as it said on the tin". The room was pleasant and in-keeping with the class of hotel, the service was 'good to excellent', and 'everything worked'. The breakfast arrangements are unusual in that rather than having a high cost catering service, there is a buffet-style facility where you collect as much food as you want but then either hunt round for a table to sit at by the pool, take the food back to your room or, as the hotel positions it, "eat it over the road on the beach". However, it does "work" as a solution provided you are not fussed about not having your breakfast served in a normal breakfast room / restaurant. The only drawback we found was that the range of foods available was adequate but probably not as extensive as other places. So do not expect to get a full English or full Continental! What we assume would have been the hotel restaurant is given over to Tiki's Bar and Grill. It is at the front of the hotel on the pool deck over-looking the beach. It does not do breakfast but does do lunch & dinner. Prices are average and quality of food is good. They have live music every evening and atmosphere, ambiance etc is also good. It is open to non-residents and generally does a good trade every evening. Good for both eating and / or just a drink. Currently you can only get wifi access by the pool. In-room Internet is via cable. However the wifi by the pool is free to use and there are sockets for power (and yes, you're right - having power sockets by the poolside would probably not be allowed in the EU!). The pool area is in shade until after 2pm and only in full sun late afternoon. So the beach is generally better for sunbathing. Loungers and sunshades can be hired at the beach. Rooms on the East facing Diamond Head have balconies but not ones that are big enough to sit o

This was the perfect hotel choice for a very early departure from our two weeks visiting three of the islands. Clean, convenient, and comfortable. The airport shuttle was on time and the driver helpful with our masses of luggage. We could not have asked for more.

Waikiki established its reputation as a getaway when the Moana Surfrider opened its doors in 1901. Today, more than 30,000 hotel rooms are packed in the skyscrapers along the golden sands of Waikiki Beach. At the end of Waikiki, Diamond Head towers as an enduring landmark. West of Waikiki, Pearl Harbor offers a somber testament to history and the victims of World War II.

Had booked for ocean view but there are different kinds apparently. Ours more like side view than full ocean view! Otherwise a good hotel to stay if you want to be in the centre of things.

"Outrigger Waikiki on the beach - perfect location"
The best holiday I have ever had. The perfect hotel in the perfect location. Everybody should visit Hawaii at least once in their lives and the Outrigger is the perfect place to stay.
"Great hotel from inside of your room!"
I cannot fault the Outrigger WotB for its friendly and helpful service, or the standard of the room, which was huge, but was disappointed by the overall experience. It fronts a very busy street and the ground floor felt like an airport as it is used as an access point for the beach. Duke's is really busy and loud and the food at the Hula Grill was mediocre. […] It is on a very narrow and crowded stretch of beach and the pool area was equally crowded. There was no shaded area or sun umbrellas so you had no alternative but to sit directly in the sun if you were outside. Overall it felt like a 3* experience rather than a 4*. I wish we had chosen the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, which has a quieter location, better restaurants and has just undergone a refit. Read more
happy to stay thier again
"Great location for walking to Diamond Head"
Major rehabilitation to the hotel to include no pool and the noise of on going construction lessened the excellant qualities of this classic hotel.
"Great location"
This hotel would have been perfect but we would never have booked it had we known they would be renovating. When we checked in, they spoke as if we knew but we booked a long time ago. Double checked the confirmation and there was no mention. We weren't happy that the pool was unavailable and the floor they put us on was where all the workers were staying. […] Despite all this, it didn't hinder our stay. It's right on the beach, so no shortage of somewhere to swim. The staff were great too. It'll be great when the renovations are finished. Read more

"outrigger waikiki on the beach"
We were informed when we booked the pool was under construction but they tried to make it as quiet as construction can possibly be.All of the staff were very helpful and accomodating. We hope to stay there again some day.My one complaint is removing the puffy lounge chairs at 4:00p.m. to make rome for the dinner tables.really?
We too hope we can welcome you back again soon. The lounge chairs are moved daily on the lower deck so Duke's restaurant can set up their evening outdoor dining. Again, thank you and we hope to see you again soon.

"Outrigger Waikiki in Honolulu"
Hotel was very nice. Even though they were going thru a construction period, everything was very clean. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our window. The beach was just outside our hotel, so a very short trip to get there. The only thing that wasn't up to par was the fact that we had a connecting door to next room and you could hear everything […] whenever anyone was near the door and speaking. Supposedly some of the reconstruction is supposed to fix this issue. Read more
"Outrigger on the Beach - on the Reef is better"
Recently stayed here in March for two nights. The hotel is undergoing a lot of renovations which requires you to use other hotels. My room faced the street and it was very loud. I would recommend staying at the Outrigger on the Reef instead.
"Great Location"
I have stayed in the ocean view room, the view is great! The location is in the heart of Waikiki, lot of shopping mall & restaurant nearby!
"Under construction but fine"
Room, lobby, etc. all fine. Valet parking is always an expense and an annoyance. I can park a car myself. Buffet breakfast was average but the view exceptional. Location perfect. Hotel beach is small but nice. Overall, a nice place to stay.

"Great location, beach access, and entertainment"
My wife and I stayed at the Outrigger right before they started a massive renovation project (check to make sure it is finished before booking). We were very pleased with everything about the hotel. In the bottom of the hotel is Dukes, which is possibly the greatest hotel lounge/bar I have ever experienced. The drinks are reasonably priced compared […] to similar hotels on the beach and equally delicious. The pool is on the smaller side, but the ocean is only about 50 feet from the pool and serves as a pretty great pool. Our room (ocean view) was great. Every night we opened the sliding window and fell asleep to the sound of the ocean. Some other reviews complained about excessive noise from outside, but we didn't notice any. I would definitely stay there again. Read more
"Hotel Wakakii Beach-Good location"
I loved the location. Beautiful hotel. We upgraded to a more expensive room and still did not get a king bed. The bathroom was so small I had to put make up on in room. Not enough light. They only have lamps.. They do not clean unless you ask them. I have stayed at much nicer places for the money. Over all it was very nice..
"Outrigger Waikiki Beach Walk"
This hotel is in a fabulous location, handy to everything. Food at Dukes Bar & Grill was reasonably priced and the servings quite large. There was a problem with the elevators during our stay making it difficult for guests on the upper floors to get back & forth to the rooms. We had booked three seperate rooms for our 2 week family of 6 holiday and […] were very disappointed when we were allocated 3 first floor rooms...we had hoped for rooms on a higher floor but none available !!!! One of the rooms was directly opposite the elevator so was quite noisy with people forever coming and going...try to avoid this if you can. Was rather offended when security entered my non-smoking son and his fiancé's room (at 8am on day 2 of our holiday!!!!!) to question whether they had been smoking in the room (they had been sleeping and were awoken by security at the door) !!! Security stated there had been complaints of someone smelling smoke on our floor.....so everyone on the first floor was under suspicion....even though we personally were not involved. They should have asked the cleaning staff instead.....they knew exactly which rooms contained smokers. Even more offensive was the fact that Security did not apologise for their thuggish attitude....even after they confirmed that no-one had been smoking in any of our rooms. Street performers are quite noisy in the evenings so if staying at this hotel, ask for a room away from the street. The hotel beach area was always packed full of people as was the pool area however the hotels further down towards the Ala Moana also had beautiful beach areas that were much less populated making them perfect for just lazing around in peace and quiet if that's what you're after. Overall we did enjoy our stay at the Outrigger.... Would we stay here again....probably not. There are many other hotels on Kalakaua with much better amenities. On two previous holidays we had stayed at the "Beachcomber".....now the "Holiday Inn" (right across the road from Read more

"Wouldn't stay anywhere else"
Everything was great check-in took about two minutes not like some other hotels. Loved every minute will be back soon. The location doesn't get any better. We had a room with partial water view it was fantastic. The lady that cleaned the room was very polite. This is no reflection on the hotel but don't fall into the trap when trying to book a tour […] through the hotel they tell you you that you can have $100 off and a free breakfast for doing a walk through one of their other locations so you can recommend it to your friends. It is HIGH pressure time share selling not worth the time out of your holiday. We were told it would take two hours that's all, included breakfast. Not so, if you don't buy they just keep on hounding you. They were not upfront about their intentions even though you tell them you are not interested. Read more
"Great location. Great hotel."
Hotel close to all the shops and right on the beach. Also very close to lost of good restaurants.
"Perfect for a one-night stay"
We stayed at the Outrigger for one night during our layover in Honolulu before we headed to our two-week vacation on Maui and the Big Island. The Outrigger was a great place to land for that night. The room was beautiful, spacious and comfortable. It's right on Waikiki Beach. Were I staying longer in Honolulu I wouldn't choose to stay on Waikiki Beach. […] The area is very touristy and feels more like Malibu or Vegas than Hawaii. After two weeks traveling on the other islands and staying in some fantastic places that felt truly Polynesian, I wouldn't choose to stay in this location. But if you do go for Waikiki Beach, the Outrigger seems a perfectly fine place. One caveat - they will tell you that their restaurant, Dukes, is the best on the beach. It definitely wasn't for us. I wouldn't recommend the restaurant at all. Read more

"The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel"
Location of the Outrigger on Waikiki Beach was fantastic!!! It is in between the Royal Hawaiian (famous pink hotel) and the Moana Surfrider Hotel, two of the oldest Hotels in Waikiki but some of the best. The famous duke's Bar and Restaurant is located directly underneath and you should book a table as it is one of the busiest places in Oahu!!! The […] International Market Place is directly across the road from the Hotel and amazing shopping up and down the street. Great staff service!!! Would stay again. Read more
"Close to all the action."
Great hotel if not seeking peace & quiet. We paid extra for an ocean front room but the noise from Duke's made it difficult to sleep with balcony door open. Did appreciate the offer of changing from a king bed room to 2 doubles as the later was a much more spacious room. Access to the pool was a little daunting as signage indicated pool access via […] Duke's restaurant but we felt uncomfortable doing this. Alternative was via public access to beach or past service area & through the bare foot bar. The guys at the Bell Desk were fantastic and provided all sorts of guidance on what to do and how to get there. Nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Read more

"Outrigger on the Beach - great hotel"
The hotel exceeded our expectations. Very clean and relatively up to date. Location A++. On the beach, yet close to great restaurants, shopping, etc... The only negative was that we had a room with a partial view of the ocean. This was not so bad, but when on the balcony it was extremely noisy --- from the next door hotels mega air conditioning unit. […] Would suggest an ocean view for the extra couple bucks to avoid this. "Definitely not a 4 star hotel"
The hotel lobby and location are great. But the room decor and size looks like it is a 1 star or 2 star hotel. It is old hotel with dated decor , small bathroom and cramped room. We stayed for only a day at this hotel and moved to a resort close by - maybe little more expensive but much better. If you just want to enjoy beach and pool this is pretty […] good but if you care about room quality/decor too then this is probably not that good. We didn't like the room. Read more

"The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach"
Very courteous staff from top to bottom
"Outrigger Waikiki - great location"
The hotel is in a great location - along with the Moana next door probably the best beach location in Waikiki. From the pool and bar/restaurant area you are only 30 metres to the water. Our kids swapped constantly from swimming in the ocean, surfing and jumping in the pool. The bars and restaurants have a great ambience in the afternoon and night - […] right on the beach, flaming torches, music and a good range of food options at pretty good prices. The atmosphere is vibrant and while you would need to generally wait to get seated at dinner they had a pager system and the longest we waited was 15 minutes. The location is also prime for surrounding restaurants and shops with lots of eating options withing a small walk. If you want a good spot on the beach and a vibrant kid friendly hotel this is a good choice. We had an ocean view room, which was on the side about half way back but still gave an excellent ocean view. Obviously closer you can get to ocean side of hotel the better the view. Rooms while starting to get a little dated were clean and large enough for us with 2 adults and 2 kids. There were 2 x double beds + sofa bed. Only negatives are the lifts struggle to keep up with numbers at the hotel and you had to wait a while at times. Also when we checked in the guy tried the hard sell on upgrading to an ocean front room, which sort of made us feel what was wrong with the room we had booked and when we said no he lost interest in us. I assume he gets paid extra for getting a paid upgrade through. Read more

excellent hotel, right on the beach. Also directly opposite the international market. Choice of 3 restaurants to dine in if you have breakfast included in your package. I found Hula grill is the best value. "The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach"
Great location. Hotel pool we found was too close to dining area making it uncomfortable to be in the pool, and the same if you are dining. We actually chose this hotel over other hotels for the pool area. Very disappointed when we arrived and learned that the pool area shut at 8pm. As we were sightseeing all day we would have liked to relaxed by the […] pool after dinner. The room was a bit tight for 4 people. No area for making a light breakfast or kettle for tea. Proved to be very inconvenient. We had travelled to 6 other states in the USA before our stop in Waikiki. This hotel was nice but lacked a few things for us to be comfortable. Read more
