Very good location downtown. No vehicle necessary. Good stay. Disappointed that the internet service was an add-on of $10 a day. For that reason I won't be back. Many other hotels of equal quality and price offering free internet. Maybe its silly, but I almost found it offensive.

The Lord Elgin is an older hotel (1941) built in the grand style. My room was comfortable and clean. The staff were helpful and overall it is a good place to stay. However ... if you plan to use their "high speed" internet ($10 per day), be advised that it was very slow both in the evenings and during the day during my stay. I tried to work from my room and gave up. It took minutes to load simple web pages and email was incredibly slow. Don't bother trying to use their internet unless you have a lot of time on your hands and don't mind a connection 1/10 the speed of a dial-up.

You can not beet the location of this hotel...just a few blocks from Parliament....Sometime outside demonstrators are a little noisy, but well worth the location. The hotel food is good, but WAY overpriced. The morning buffet was a good deal though. Overall I recommend the hotel!

Room was excellent, well equipped and very clean. Service was faultless from check in through to checkout, all staff were extremely friendly and always available to help. We stayed at the Lord Elgin in August 2009 for a short pleasure vacation. We got a wonderful rate for the Executive King and it was worth the price!! The room was wonderful, great view from our 8th floor corner room. The room was quiet, bright and very clean. The bed was huge and comfortable. The bathroom had plenty of counter space, any used amenities were replaced. It also came with free high speed internet, free morning paper, free bottled water and free hot buffet breakfast. (The omelet station was great!) Plus a 5 minute easy walk from downtown Ottawa. (Byward Market or Parliament Hill) It had a very easy to use alarm clock (dumb but essential), also a mini fridge and coffee maker, The front desk staff was extremely polite and helpful, took care of anything promptly. (Our TV remote had dead batteries, a new remote was brought up withing 10 minutes and was double checked to be sure it worked with the TV) Parking was reasonable and average for the city, even better considering it was valet. Plus you were charged per 24 hour period which saved us money! Only minor issue was with the valet...In peek times, we did have to wait to get our car out or it could be tough getting space in the small area in front to drop off. But we quickly learned to budget our time. The valets were always helpful and friendly even when busy. We only waited 20 minutes for our car once, and about 5 minutes to get space to drop off. It was all the 4-star hotel you would expect, reasonable priced room, great service. Definitely upgrade for an executive room, the extra amount was worth it! We look forward to coming back to Ottawa and staying here again!

The Lord Elgin was a very short walk to Parliment Hill as well as the canal. Only complaint was the restaurant. Dinner was average and slightly pricey, however the breakfast buffet was the worst value. The selection at breakfast was diverse and they had made to order omelets, however the price including tip was $40. Far too much for a breakfast buffet. Other than that minor nuisance, it was a very enjoyable stay and the staff was very helpful when we asked for assistance.

I am frequently in Ottawa on business. I normally stay at the Marriott, Westin or the Sheraton. The Lord Elgin was running a summer special that made the room price too attractive to pass up. It was worth the money. Rate included breakfast for two, the Executive Room and Internet access. I was traveling with my son, so the clerk asked me if I would like to change to a double queen room, instead of the Executive Room (which is only a King). She said the hotel would treat the stay like an Executive Room and would still provide the breakfast, Internet Access and robes/slippers. We ended up in a perfectly nice double queen room. Plenty of space for the two of us. Amenities in the room were fine. Nothing special, but everything was clean and comfortable. Car parking is valet only, but we never had to wait for the car. We called down 10 minutes in advance and the car was waiting for us (even when we called at 3:45am to have the car ready for us at 4am). The only negative really was the breakfast. It was a typical buffet, so nothing special there. We often had to wait to get coffee refilled even though the room was not very busy. Some of the fruit was rotten as well. Even so, we were able to find enough food to eat at the buffet that we did not starve. It certainly wasn't so bad that we would not stay there again. Convenient location to By Ward Market, Parliament, etc.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 28, 2009
We mostly chose the hotel for the location--within easy walking distance of much that we wanted to see. The hotel is pretty, rooms were clean and well appointed. However, the room was much smaller than we thought it would be, and the bed was harder than we prefer. That being said, though, the biggest issue we had was there is no concierge and the staff were unable/unwilling to be particularly helpful in terms of restaurant recommendations, making reservations, and so forth. We were told to "go through the yellow pages" when trying to find somewhere for dinner one night. We ended up calling our son back in the States and asking him to go online and google recommendations for us. The lack of helpful staff wasn't as big a deal after we'd been there a day or so as we'd been able to get the lay of the land by then, but the first day it was very frustrating to have no help whatsoever. For the price and location of the hotel, we were extremely surprised that there was no concierge or concierge service available. If you stay there, do your research ahead of time rather than relying on local recommendations!

Upon arrival, the front desk was very busy checking in a large group of people. Despite the activity, the personnel were very responsive and accomodating. The restaurant attached to the hotel was nice. Dinner was above average food for an average price. However the breakfast buffet was quite expensive. Although the food was quite good for breakfast. The location of the hotel was convenient, although I think I might have enjoyed being closer to Byward Market (personal preference as it was only a 10 minute walk). The highlight was on Sunday night. My wife and I had a terrible experience at a nearby Sushi restaurant. We returned to the hotel and Stacy at the front desk recommmended another restaurant two blocks away. It was a great dining experience. So glad have received the recommendation.

The staff was consistently friendly and helpful, with one snafu involving a long delay to retrieve our car via valet parking. (The hotel absorbed the overnight cost as apology for the delay.) However, upon arrival, an especially helpful valet guided us to avoid a long line waiting to check cars, so perhaps the parking gods were just evening the score. The desk clerk checking us in, politely insisted we would enjoy a higher floor than we wanted, and he proved to be right as lower floors were occupied with many families of junior hockey players. One night during our stay, our phone was rung by a polite prankster at 2a using the open phone on our floor. We heard the scurrying for the elevator after the call and the sounds of kids enjoying their prank. Apart from that, our nights were undisturbed and restful. We took two meals in the hotel over four days, a dinner and breakfast, both in the Elgin Cafe. The food was very good and the buffet breakfast excellent and fairly priced compared to what we have paid at major hotels in other large cities. The housekeeping staff were readily available, cheerful, and helpful. The room was comfortable, modest in size but adequate, and nicely appointed, fitting for a classic property in a major city. The hotel is convenient to many attractions and event venues. The fitness facilities and pool were modest in size and rather busy with junior athletes and their families, but seemingly well run. My wife and I (both 65) agree we would return to the Lord Elgin without hesitation and our trip was enjoyable in part due to an agreeable hotel experience at a reasonable price for the location.

The Lord Elgin hotel was nicer than we expected at the reasonable rates. With the value of the dollar so low, we didn't think that we could stay in such a nice place, but the right special made it worth while. The room was comfortable with a desk and two decent chairs. The bed was firm, but not uncomfortable. The bathroom was tiny, but well appointed with nice tile, fixtures, and even a decent tub. Our room was quiet and had a nice view of the park. I have a few complaints, but they're minor. There was a $10 or $11 charge per day for an internet connection. They did have a "Business Center" with two connected computer stations that was available for free, but I really think that any modern hotel today should have free and open WiFi. The pool was nice, but the water was a bit murky when I went swimming. That might have just been a bad day for the filter. The staff was universally helpful and friendly. I dealt a bit with Mitch at the reception desk (check in, check out, travel arrangements, safe deposit box, etc.). He was always helpful and a real asset to the hotel. Everyone was helpful and willing to please. I would be happy to stay there again. Top marks!

The hotel has been rennovated and rooms have a modern, 'motel room' look to them, i.e. no period furniture, but good beds and modern bath. Staff are friendly, but check-in was a hassle. The entrance bay was jammed with cars and we had to wait to pull up to to the door to unload, then the valet was in a hurry to get our car moved out of the way. Then we had to stand ca 20 minutes in line to check in. Hotel room was not ready for us when we arrived at 4:00 p.m. The next day, returning to the room at 5:00 p.m., the room had still not been serviced. Parking expensive at $18 per day + taxes.

Staff was helpful although one tried to talk us out of the shuttle and take a taxi instead and the first person we talked to failed to make the requested call to ensure that the shuttle stopped at the hotel.
