Overview

Location. The 880-acre Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu, Hawaii, projects an authoritative presence along north Oahu's secluded shoreline on the lands of Kuilima. Guests who arrive via Honolulu International Airport will drive 38 miles to the hotel. Famous landmarks include Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Falls Park, all of which lie within five miles of the resort. The Polynesian Cultural Center, North Shore Marketplace and Dole Plantation are situated within a 15 mile radius of the hotel. Two championship golf courses, 10 tennis courts, horseback riding, hiking and mountain bike trails and a surfing school are among the many outdoor adventures that await guests. Sheltered by Kuilima Cove, snorkelers and swimmers can investigate the coral reef's brilliantly hued marine life. Turtle Bay flanks the west side of the resort and hosts surfing tournaments.
Hotel Features. Renovated in 2003, this property features a luminous flagstone lobby that oversees Kahuku Point, Oahu's northernmost tip. The Spa Luana, a full service spa located in the resort's lobby area, offers massage, body, skin and hair treatments. This resort's bi-level pool complex features a palm-fringed pool, two spa tubs, a children's pool and a 79-foot water slide. The landscaped veranda features ocean liner style lounge chairs where guests can gaze over vast reaches of the Pacific. The KeiKi Turtle Club has a game room that provides youth-oriented entertainment. The 24-hour business center includes high-speed Internet access and the level below the lobby yields shops and stores. For fine dining, 21 North features Hawaiian-Asian cuisine served with complimentary island sunsets. The casual Palm Terrace offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. The Sunset Room is where vacationers congregate to experience the resort's lavish Sunday brunch.

Guestrooms. The Turtle Bay resort features 375 guestrooms, 26 suites, 42 beach cottages and luxury ocean villas in three seven-story wings. Accommodations feature views of the ocean and resort, island- style furniture, marble vanities and soft, white duvets adorn pillowtop mattresses. Amenities include complimentary wireless Internet access, multi-line telephones with data ports, refrigerators and coffeemakers.

Expert Tip. Rated one of Oahu's best whale-watching sites, the Turtle Bay Resort attracts international guests.

Recommended Trip type: Family "Excellent location"

      Reviewed by J & R of New York on Jan 30, 2010

We stayed in 4 different places on the islands and this was our favorite. Of course, we went there to get out of the city of Honolulu, see the North Shore and play golf. Turtle Bay offered it all and they were so welcoming, even when we arrived early. We were able to get to the pool and beach sooner than we thought so it felt like we had extra time. Food was pricey but excellent and the views surrounding the entire hotel were magnificent. The golf course was challenging but fun. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and wished we had left Honolulu sooner to stay here longer.

We were not told of a $20 per day 'resort fee' that allowed us to self-park (although NO parking was available so we parked in the valet lot), internet, newspaper (which was out in the lobby not delivered to the room), use of the fitness center. All in all it was for things that should be provided when spending 250-300 per night! Additionally, the entire pool was undergoing maintenance so we were given a voucher for buffet breakfast. If you are visiting the northshore to enjoy the surf and beaches you could do better elsewhere. I wouldn't reccomend as I was so put off by the surprise fee and pool not being usable. Also, we had a room in the west wing 5th floor. Although the ocean and balcony were great,we were not facing face and could not see the sunset and looked over the ugly red roof of the conference building. Definitely request the east wing!

This hotel was the greatest place I've ever been on earth so far. I only have 2 slight complaints. One, the internet was intermittent - it was better than another place we stayed in Waikiki, but still kind of spotty. Two, eating at this hotel is incredibly expensive. Plan on spending A LOT of money on food if you come here. If you don't have a lot of $$ to spend on food, then hit a grocery store or something. Other than that, everything about this place was perfect.

Ended up driving 10 mins to Haleiwa (Every where close early) or a bit over 1 hr to Honolulu (open late). It wasn't fun since my plan was to stay and relax at the hotel most of my vacation time. - Bars close early - Surprised at check-in. $20 Service charge per stay (I thought everything was paid when I booked my room on hotels.com) - Lipton tea in the room. (It was complementary but it needs to be up graded to something better.) - Over priced breakfast at Palm Terrace. $24 per person for buffet. - Carpets on hallways were old (very much like a motel)

We were staying at a condo in Waikiki but decided to get a room for a night at Turtle Bay Resort since our family was going to spend a long day at Polynesian Cultural Center. Location was great. Check in was fabulous, she upgraded us to a room with a bigger balcony and better view for no charge and I didn't even have to ask! It was everything we imagined. We had such a great view, we slept with door completely open and woke up to a pleasant sunrise over the beautiful beach. Kids enjoyed every minute they had in the pool. They loved the slide. I enjoyed the nice trails they had for walking along the beach. I felt like I died and gone to heaven. We did not want to go back to crowded Waikiki afterward. The hotel has many shrimp trucks nearby and you must go!! We ate at Romy's 2 times in 24 hour period. Fresh prawns and shrimp... when we come back to visit Oahu next year (and hopefully every year after) we will definitely stay at Turtle Bay for the duration of the trip. Not overcrowded and everyone can have their own space and peace. The only thing I would change is to upgrade the rooms... pretty outdated. Other than that the resort is perfect. Staff is excellent. Everyone has the Aloha spirit and always smiling and greeting you. Great for families with kids and romatic getaway... at Turtle Bay, it is very possible to do both. The kids have so many activities to do as well as for the grown ups.

The large expanse of windows and seating areas for vacationers to enjoy the ocean views was outstanding. The property and amenities the hotel has to offer are such that you do not have to leave unless you want to. We ate at the pool grill, the Palm Tree and another Restaurant a short walk on the resort. All food and drinks were very satisfying. We spent four lovely nights after arriving from a stay on Maui. I loved the whole ambiance that Turtle Bay had to offer. If there were something I could recommend for improvement it would be that the carpeting and rooms could be updated a little more. They are large enough but could use a little more pizazz to match everything else offered at this resort. I would highly recommend a stay here and would be inclined to book there again. Service was outstanding throughout this resort.

Overall, the hotel was pretty good. The room was pretty large and had a great view (as I think most of the rooms there do, given the design of the building.) The only complaints we had were minor details that detracted from the room ambiance (e.g., the wall had been painted, but the outlet wall plate had not been taped or removed, so it was partially painted... very minor, but very sloppy and unprofessional.) Also, some maintenance issues in the bathroom with the paint and crappy plastic decorations gave away the building's true age. Easy things to tolerate, though, especially since we weren't in the room much. The grounds overall were very nice. One word of caution... upon check-in, we were confronted by a significant daily "resort fee" that the hotels.com purchase did *not* cover that should be factored in when comparing prices between hotels.

When we checked in and went to our room we were appalled and very disappointed. We then went back down to complain and were upgraded to a suite on a different side of the hotel- world of difference. If we had stayed in the first room they would have received all 1's, so they did know how to remedy the situation. As a matter of fact, the clerk seemed not at all surprised when we complained and told us that they were scheduled for a renovation next year. After that it should be a great place to stay again. The location on the North Shore can't be beat.

A car is definitely recommended. The North Shore has great little towns to explore as well as the Shrimp Trucks and fruit stands along the road. We also went to the grocery store a couple of times to stock up on munchies. The rooms have refrigerators, so we put it to good use. Other reviewers have complained about the price of meals at the hotel. Let's be realistic, it's no different than any other hotel. The meals we did have were great and the service was awesome too! We can't wait to go back. Oh, one side note: The rooms with the pool view are awesome, but can be a little noisy. If you are looking for something a little more quite then maybe request a room away from the pool.

Incredible location on the north shore of Oahu with fabulous siting of rooms so that most all have some waterfrontage. Worth the experience for at least 2-4 days but I am not a big resort person.

I would definitely go back. I stayed in an ocean front room that you could hear the waves with the lanai door open. Enjoyed the water slide at the pool. Very clean hotel. Friendly and accomodating staff. Lots of spots to lay out and get sun on the premises. Didn't see any turtles though :)

we were a bit trepidatious because so many of the recent reviews were quite critical, but everything was to our enormous satisfaction and enjoyment. The facility is lovely, up-to-date and clean, well designed so that everyone would appear to have at least a partial ocean view, the last minute booking was a very fair price, and this website allowed for a cancellation policy, which Turtle Bay does not on the direct late bookings (thank you, hotels.com). There are even laundry facilities. We were delighted and wish we could have stayed longer, but found that the long drive from the airport was worth it even for one day. Beware, however, if you take the early flight from HNL because the rush hour for the two military bases one must pass on the way to the airport starts well before 6 am. I would have been happier had our calls/emails advising of our very late arrival had been returned or acknowledged, but our booking was in order so there was no need for added confirmation except our mainland anxiety.

Staying at this resort was an extravagance for us, but worth every penny. The room was large, very comfortable and had a great view. The staff was very friendly and professional. If you plan on spending the day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, you should consider spending the night here rather than driving back to Waikiki.

Turtle Bay Resort exceeded all our expectations. Beautiful setting, awesome ocean views, excellent friendly service. Highly recommend a stay. Surfing, snorkling, horse back riding, hiking trails, golf, super pool area, convenient to all the fabulous North shore beaches and Halieva. The bus along Kam highway stops at Turtle Bay for only $2 including a return transfer.

The first room they showed us was dingy (didn't feel right, and had a view of ocean but on the back/left side). We had booked online in advance for oceanfront deluxe with bigger lanai balcony. It ends up the oceanfront regular with smaller lanai balcony is better deal with awesome view of the beach/reef. So even though we prepaid an extra $15/night for the deluxe room, we're glad we took the downgrade. the hotel is a little worn, but the property/ views are incredible. Food is expensive, but found it worth it at Ola. Unfortunately the famous sunday brunch was closed for renovations as was the water slide, but we loved hanging at the amazing beach on the property.

it was definately a great place to stay and so beautiful. it was away from wakiki about an hour, but for us, we didn't want to be in the hussle/bussle of the city. the hotel restaurants for good enough for us. we at most of our meals around the pool and the food was excellend. the buffee breakfasts were good too. the staff could not have been any better. housekeeping was excellent. the gift stores were plentiful for purchases and there were lots of surrounding beaches for snorkeling if you desired optional beaches for such. the marina for fishing and other activities was withing about 20 minutes. the last day we went into wakiki to await our departure flight only to realize that we were SO glad we stayed out on the north shore. MUCH more peaceful and secluded feeling. but absolutely GEORGEOUS! will definately stay there again. :)
