see all hotels in Central Park"A pleasant surprise"
Reviewed by Kirsten of Western Massachusetts on Jan 28, 2010
Hotel Salisbury is located only a couple of blocks from Central Park and an easy walk to Times Square. The hotel is nothing fancy but clean and well kept. There is no doorman but it isn't necessary. You can easily pull up in front of the hotel to unload and check in before parking your car at the garage a few blocks away. There were closer parking garages but the prices were not listed and the hotel had a half price agreement with this garage which was definitely worth the few blocks walk. The upgrade from two double beds to a suite was "a pleasant surprise." There was plenty of room. The large living room had a 3 person sofa, several arm chairs, a desk, and large flat screen tv. There was a dining room/kitchen area with a full size table, 4 chairs, beer fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and a small sink. This was perfect for reheating leftovers from the numerous restaurants in the area. The bedroom was two double beds with firm mattresses and two large dressers plus another flat screen tv. The bathroom was small but adequate, well maintained, and very clean. As for customer service, the staff were more than prompt and genuinely wanted to help. When we couldn't figure out how to work the tv, a technician was immediately dispatched and arrived with in a minute of our asking for help. We also asked for more towels and within 3 mins, housekeeping had arrived at the door with the number we requested. Angelo's Pizza located next door is fantastic! The food is generous, delicious, and the prices are good for a family budget. The service is typical for NY. A bodega serving breakfast sandwiches, desserts, coffee, and other food items is located two doors down from the hotel and was also very good and affordable.

Would definitely stay here again, you can't get a better bargain in the city. We were upgraded to a suite without asking. Suite was extremely spacious - kitchenette area with a table, large sitting area with a couch, table and chairs, large flat screen tv. The bedroom was large, king bed, two chairs, dresser & large flat screen tv. Bathroom was very spacious as well and very clean, everything sparkled. The room had 3 large closets and windows that opened and two air conditioners. It's an older building, dated decor and no amenities, but again, the best bargain around by far!!! I would skip the continental breakfast though. Great location, 2 blocks from Central Park, across from Carnegie Hall and a short walk to Columbus Circle. Extremely pleased, would highly recommend and would stay there again.

I stayed at the Salisbury for leisure my first time in New York. The staff was helpful when I needed assistance regarding a tour. I reserved a king bed but opted for a room with two double beds when I checked in to get the pantry which incluces a small refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. This a very handy amenity which I used. The location is great! Two blocks from central park, 1 1/2 block from 5th ave. shopping, Carnegie hall is up the block. Many sights are within walking distance of the hotel. I was able to buy tour tickets at the hotel desk and getting to the tour pick up was very easy. There are 24 hour pharmacy and a small market within walking distance of the hotel. The only thing I found that bugged me slightly was there was a piece of floss on the carpet that was not mine and a walnut piece by my bed. I would surely stay at the hotel again. The room size was the size of a room I would get here in california which I think was large for NYC.

This Hotel was an excellent value in an unbeatable location. The rooms were clean and well serviced. The rooms were comfortable, not busy, but stately and sterile. The hotel staff was extremely courteous and professional. For a midtown hotel room, the room was spacious. It had two huge closets with plenty of storage room. The streets were quiet at night and the beds were firm, but very comfortable. The rooms were older, this was evident mostly in the appearance of the bathroom. The bathroom was a little outdated but clean. My only complaint was with the varying water pressure in the shower and the shower curtain design causing the shower curtain to fall into a quarter of the shower space. (The curtain rod needs to curve out away from the shower/tub. It's silly but I don't like taking a shower with a wet shower curtain rubbing against me the entire shower). I also was bothered by room noise from nearby guests in the early and late nights. But, for the money, cleanliness, and location, I would recommend this hotel and look forward to visiting again.

The location is fabulous! Easy walk to metro (especially the E coming in from JFK), 2 blocks to Central Park, literally across the street from the Russian Tea Room and Carnegie Hall. In addition, great rooms and service for the price paid. I can't think of a better hotel for location, service and price. Will definitely stay here again when I go to NYC! I arrived earlier than expected and was immediately shown to my room. The bellman told me I had a suite as he opened the door for me - I thought they had made a mistake, but he said no. (I felt like I was impersonating someone as I was not expecting all this for the very reasonable rate I paid!) The bellman told me the hotel used to be apartments, hence the room set up: kitchette, sitting area, seperate sleeping area with two beds, a small bathroom and 4 closets. The suite was very charming with a vintage feel.

Because of the relatively cheap rate--I thought that I would bring my roach spray, sani wipes and bed bug spray (which I bring to every hotel anyway). I read the online reviews about the hotel being older and had some reservations. When I arrived (on my birthday--which had been a very difficult day up until that point), the hotel gave me a surprising upgrade to a suite on one of the upper floors. I found the lobby quaint and very homey--a nice change from the cold, impersonal other lobbies of the larger hotels. The age of the hotel was more charming than anything because I liked the baseboards, wooden doors and crown molding and ceiling detail. The continental breakfast was reasonably priced and quite adequate. Additionally, the small staff was friendly enough except for one person. I thought the hotel was in an excellent location and a great bargain for the money. I would definitely recommend this hotel based upon my experience there.
