The Horton Grand Hotel - San Diego

didn't spend much time here, just to sleep through the night. This historic hotel has a certain charm to it. My room was nothing extravagant, but the bed was comfy for me, the plasma tv was new and nice and I found a channel that played decent music to listen to, the coffee maker in the room was nothing fancy but I found it quite convenient, a bit turned […] off by the old alarm clock from the 70's but no big deal really since I use my cell phone's alarm clock. The bathroom decor was dated and uncomfortable at the sink due to limited counter space, the water flow from the tiny sink was weak, but the shower felt great with good pressure. My room was located next to a night club, and the floors squeaked every time someone walked above my room so I was so glad that I brought my earplugs because I slept like a baby all night. The front desk service was great as well as the valet; although when I called the front desk from my room there was no answer twice and no answer when I called housekeeping. There was some nasty hair left all over the handle of the hairdryer but I removed it with a tissue and never had a need to use it so that wasn't an issue for me really, even though I'm a total germophobe. Bring some lysol when you travel. I always do for reasons like this. Great location. Near many bars so you'll find drunken fools on the streets around 1-2am. But close walking distance to many great restaurants and I was able to easily walk to my destination which was near Petco Park. Read more

Reasonably priced for the centralized location. Staff were helpful and knew the area well for directions. Hotel has lots of character, enhancing our stay. Will certainly stay here again next visit!

We checked in a little later in the evening and the valets and front desk were super nice. and friendly. Had a hard time finding a quick bite in the downtown area but lucked out on the otherside (east?) of PETCO Stadium we found a Sushi place with easy parking around that area. The next morning the little street fair around the corner caught my eye […] and we walked around. We ended up coming back to the hotel for breakfast because all of the really cool places in the neighborhood had waiting lines down the street. It looked like a food shortage que in the Soviet block. ( we were told later that there was a big bike race in town) The little place at the hotel had slow service and frankly we were ready to walk, but the manager came over to smooth our ruffled feathers and personally take care of us. She offered to comp our meal and after everything started running smoothly,we tried to pay but she insisted on following through with the offer. The food was great and everyone really did care to go the extra mile with their services. We recommend staying there though would like to see the bathrooms renovated. Read more

This hotel was a surprise to me. I've been retired 8-10 years and used to travel 80% of the time, having spent time in a variety of hotels. This hotel is about 30 years beyond the calendar. A restaurant that cannot charge to room is antiquated. Restaurant also closes at 3:00 pm and no dinner hours. - Not too good!! I thought the hotel was great and it was a great price. I did not sample the restaurant food or the bar so I can't speak to that, but the hotel had a very old feel but in a good way, if that makes sense. I will say it is not for the faint of heart. It is not a big […] deal Sunday through Wednesday but Thursday - Sat nights, it gets very loud out on the streets. If you are staying in the Gaslight you have to expect a little of that, but they asked me if I wanted a room away from the street or a balcony, I took the balcony so I asked for it. I loved staying at the Horton Grand. I was in town for a conference and arrived a few days early to take in the sights. The hotel truly is historic and I love historic buildings so I was enthralled. The service staff is kind and courteous. I will say that I wish they had known more about the local culture including local restaurants, public transportation, […] and fun activities that weren't super touristy but everyone was extremely kind. Ken was especially helpful and I appreciated his going the extra mile to look up bus times for me. I loved my room but it is quite small given it's a historic hotel. The hotel is close to so much of San Diego. Also, sitting on the courtyard with a cup of tea or coffee is a lovely way to spend a little time. Property is an old, refurbished Victorian Hotel. Rooms are on the small side, however, that didnt bother us. The walls are very thin. I read the reviews, and it seemed a good place for our getaway. My wife loves history, and the hotel is full of it. Some reviews said it was noisy, but our room was overlooking the private alley bisecting the property, so there was no street noise. My only complaints are that the wifi, though free, is very slow. The hotel is, however, upgrading the […] wifi infrastructure. I spoke with the owner of the new wifi provider as he was overseeing the installation. Seems that it will be good. I don't know if it will remain free.. The other complaint is that there was no video on demand or movie channels offered. We wanted to stay in and watch a movie, but it wasn't an option. The slow wifi disallowed streaming one on my laptop. Be aware that hotel valet parking will cost $25/day. Otherwise, you pay at a nearby parking structure. What a pleasant surprise! We booked this online while traveling in the car. Admittedly, we were looking for something 'familiar', since we had never been to San Diego but were told the gas lamp district was a must see. The location was a big draw, just on the edge of where we thought would be ideal. It's an easy walk to wherever you want to go. The […] curb appeal of the hotel exudes character, and we were greeted warmly by a bellhop and front desk attendant. The lobby, the hotel stairways, hallways, and especially the room are so not ordinary, opposite of any chain hotel at any price. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time, but that's good. It's not overtly done. The Horton has a wonderful restaurant inside where we had a delicious hot breakfast, and the seemingly only 'modern' touch outside our room of an elevator was a necessity with our many bags to take up. Loved the wi-fi, the wall-mounted room TV, the pull-chain lavatory, and the room desk nestled in our historic bay window that overlooked the district. It was amazingly quiet in our room, which was unexpected given the hotel's historic nature. This was built in the 1980's, but you'll feel more relaxed and in a different era. I got the king room and there is just enough room for two or three people to stay. Situated on the edge of the gas lamp quarter there isn't too much traffic congested in the area and my kickback spots are just 5 minutes away or 4-6 blocks away walking. We arrived much later than we had planned and the desk clerk was quite rude. After charging $25 for parking he then proceeds to ridicule my truck before taking it wherever he went. The room was nice just very cold. In the morning there was nobody at the desk and it took almost hour to get my truck back from valet. I will not be returning.
