"Horton Grand is truly Grand"
Hotel is located in a great part of town. A few blocks from the trolley, the Convention Center, lovely lobby, free Wi-Fi, and many more great things. There are loads of restaurants in the immediate area, no need for a car. I would recommend this hotel for any length of stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great central location in Gasslamp!"
I decided to attend a conference at the last minute and all the major hotels were already booked. I am glad they were and I found the Horton Grand. Unlike the modern hotels, this one has lot's of charm and character. I felt like I walked back in time or was somewhere in New Orleans or San Francisco. Very Victorian and cozy (rooms are not large but very […] comfortable). If you are looking for a hotel with a pool or club inside, you won't find them here but they do have a small restaurant that is open for breakfast and lunch that also offers room service (but only until 2pm). Being in the center of Gaslamp has it's pros and cons...Pros: you are walking distance to everything, including the Convention Center, clubs and great restaurants. Con's: lot's of partying Thursday thru Saturday nights so be prepared for rowdy neighbors and noise from the street (again, think Bourbon Street in New Orleans) but I think that is the charm of the hotel and Gaslamp. If you want quiet, book Sunday thru Wednesday or bring ear plugs. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A Nice Bit of History"
After an initial hiccup with the expedia reservation, the late night clerk found us a nice room; so nice, in fact, we decided to extend our stay from 2 to 5 nights. Valet parking is 'in and out' and is priced the same as a single-use, cramped lot a block away. Very quick access to area sights, a quick walk to the nearby gigantic mall, and several restaurants […] within a block with a nice variety of choices. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Close to the Gaslamp Quarter"
The hotel was great! The decor was so beautiful and old fashioned. I loved that you could eat in the center courtyard. The neighborhood is very nice, and it definitely gets hopping at night time. If you do stay in a room facing the street, it can be quite noisy at night, especially if you're right near Fluxx (a club next door). Everyone was very fr […] iendly. "Almost but Not Quite"
We arrived and had to double park in the street because of inadequate staffing. The room was very nice, although the fireplace at the foot of the bed and blocked from any view. But they really fell apart at checkout. One clerk, the entire hotel checking out or so it seemed), and one valet. Worse, no one managing the valet line. Fifteen or so people […] standing around with bags wondering who was next. Lengthy delay, the desk clerk got very snotty, and the valet got angry with people. For lack of staffing one position, the valet, they left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouths. I would not recommend this hotel. And the bathroom shower and tub had not been upgraded. Three stars is out of respect for them having refurbished a classic place. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Downtown in the Gaslamp, what more could you want?"
The hotel was fantastic, but the night club 'Fluxx' right next to the hotel, can cause some sleep deprivation. Be prepared to not get to sleep until 2a at the earliest. Despite the signs on the outside of 'Fluxx' asking people to be respectful of noise, it's a bunch of drunk people...so that clientele won't exactly heed the notice on the signs. "Great location and good service"
The only thing is that it is a little bit noisy at nigth if your room is on the corner of island and 4 th street (Yhere is a night club acroos the street). The personnel were quick to change my room on my request.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Charming Historic Hotel"
Charming building and room with bay windows. Close to everything in Gaslamp and East Village at a phenomenal price. No need to rent a car and pay for parking. Paula at the front desk is friendly and helpful. Recommended this place to my family and plan to stay there every time I visit downtown San Diego.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Horton Grand Hotel We are grateful for your recent review and staying at our hotel. Glad you think very well of our price value relationship. We will pass along your kind remarks about Paula to her, and thank you for them. Thank you very much for your recommendation and looking forward to seeing you again on your next visit to San Diego.
"Great Place, Great Staff"
Was in town for one night and needed to be in the Gaslamp. Affordable hotel with unique/antique look. Arrived Saturday morning and was expecting to not be able to check in as it was way too early but the friendly staff were extremely accommodating and were able to check me in early! Very pleased with the hospitality and my room/stay. Definitely a place […] I would return to. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"$25.00 A Day to Park Your Car"
The rooms vary and so do the prices. The downtown San Diego area is not what it used to be. Lots of young drunk people partying on a Saturday night (we stayed on Saturday night..lol). The fact that they want to valet your car for 25.00 a day in addition to the room rate is insane. It should be free. And there is metered street parking and free overnight […] street parking on weekends. They also had booked some kind of wedding or kids party in the adjoining room next to the check in desk and it was so loud you had to yell to talk to the people behind the front desk. Our short stay was not pleasant and I would never tell anyone to stay there. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Horton Grand Hotel Greetings J.C., thank you for taking time to write a review. We keep our room rates value oriented as most do not valet park a car with us. For those who do, we recently conducted a survey and learned our rate is lower than 80% of hotels in the Gaslamp and Downtown areas. There is convenient metered parking, when available. For your information, if meter expires the fine is relatively very expensive. We infrequently book events in the area near the front desk, and sincerely apologize for the communication challenge. Please reconsider staying with us so that we may have another opportunity to meet or exceed your expectations.

"Great location and atmosphere"
The hotel was great, wouldn't have any hesitations staying their again. While they said valet parking was limited, we didn't have any issues. Even if we did there's a lot 1/2 a block away. Great nightlife a block away but once your back at the hotel you couldn't tell (no noise etc).Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice convenient hotel."
Stayed 4 nights in July. Nice hotel. I loved the balcony where I had coffee every morning and night. Very convenient to the convention center and 5th street. The room was very nice and the bed was great. The bathroom showed a little wear and tear and could have easily been fixed. I would recommend it and stay again. It is a great value!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Close to the bay area, great places to eat."
We found the decor beautiful, restful and welcoming. The staff were great. The room was clean and the whole hotel made us feel that we were staying in one of the great Victorian Houses of that era! Beautiful rooms, I want to stay there again in Oct. The Gas Lamp district so is fun In the heart of the fun in the Gas Lamp district. Mr T, the bouncer/ doorman at Dicks last Resort was so much fun.Genuine Expedia guest review
The location is very good for anyone wanting eat, catch a ball game or go to the zoo. It is also very close to two trolly stations. This make old town very accessible. The room was very small and the walls are very thin. There were only two electrical plugs in the room, one in the bathroom and one by the bed. This was a bit of an issue for two people […] with cell phones that needed charged, a tablet and a laptop. We also found it odd that we reserved our room over 2 months in advance to our stay and yet we very placed in a undesirable location, by the dumpster on the first floor, in a room that appeared smaller than our neighbors. The valet fee was a mild annoyance, particualry since we only dropped the car off upon arrival and picked it up when we left. If u don't mind a small room and value location above all, this is the right hotel for u. If u want a little more luxury, privacy and space, I would go elsewhere. Response by The Horton Grand Hotel Thank you for taking your valuable time to submit a review of our hotel. We are fortunate to have a very convenient location. We appreciate your bringing to our attention a need to add electrical plugs in the room where you stayed. We have advised our maintenance team to locate the room and resolve this issue. Having booked your room over two months in advance we should have assigned you a different room, and apologize to you. We hope you will give us another opportunity to meet your expectations.
The hotel has a lot of charm, the location is great!! The fireplace in the room is a nice romantic touch. "Beautiful old hotel with history"
My business partner arrived ahead of me, so he got the better balcony room on the 4th floor facing the courtyard, but though mine was smaller, it was cute and charming with antique furnishings (even the toilet) and a lovely fireplace. The large bed was very comfortable, but my room was on the 2nd floor, just above the dumpster, so when the city arrived […] to pick it up at 5:30am, it was loud and left a horrible stench for a brief time, and I heard creaking above me from someone walking on the old floorboards. And while I had blackout drapes, they were fixed on the door and window, so I couldn't pull them completely shut, leaving a large gap where morning sunlight seeped in. I'm sensitive to light and sound, so this made my night rather short. The surrounding neighborhood is the Gaslamp which is fun and quirky and can be loud, but I wasn't bothered. Best of all was the hotel was a short 5-minute walk to the Convention Center and Marriott Marquis for my event and about 1/2 the cost of staying at the Marriott. Breakfast was reasonable and tasty, especially in the courtyard. If you stay, definitely ask for a courtyard room on the top floor! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location, charming"
Felt like something right out of the French Quarter in New Orleans, other than the bathroom fan randomly kicking on my stay was perfectly pleasant.Genuine Expedia guest review
The bathroom was AWFUL!!! The tub didn't drain. The showerhead was too low (& I'm only 5' 3"), the shelf above the sink was broken & tilted so everything slid off it, the "quaint" toilet was noisy, slow, and unsanitary. No room service after 2 in the afternoon. The place seemed overpriced. I don't think I'll stay there again, even though the location […] worked for my purposes. Went for a birthday part six blocks away. Party was great but when back at the hotel had a blast watching all the goings on on a Saturday night. "Gaslamp District not for those trying to rest!"
The hotel is beautiful and charming. However, it is located across the street from the number one club 3 years running. If you are trying to get any rest...forget it! Also, the hotel hosted a birthday party in their bar and allowed this party to go on well past mid-night! I always though hotels required quiet after 9 or 10pm! Lesson learned ... do not […] stay any where near the Gaslamp District if you are not a clubber and you are trying to get away for some peace and quiet...ain't gonna happen here! "Great Central Location"
This hotel is in a great location for seeing all the sights of San Diego with plenty of nightlife action steps from the door. The Gaslamp Quarter is rocking every night, lots of bars and restaurants and shops within easy walking distance. Only a short drive to all San Diego has to offer. Even with all the raucus revelry outside we heard none of it from […] our room which was small but adequate. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nice old hotel that's been refurbished. It was a great home base for excursions to the park, Del Mar racetrack, golf, the Midway Museum, Old Towne, you name it. The valet parking of $25 a night seemed a little steep but once we spent a few hours trying to find a place to park we decided it was just the easiest way to go. And they were very good about getting our car quickly any time of day. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I noticed in previous reviews that customer service was an issue and hotel mgmt responded with they would be working on it but obvioulsy has not been done yet. The valet was not a very helpful or friendly person, and the lady who was at the desk on the day we came in was not very friendly either. After standing there for about 5 minutes waiting for […] her to get off the phone (she barely acknowledged I was there waiting to talk to her), I tried to do an early check in, not expecting to get a key to a room just getting the paperwork done so we would only have to pick up a key when we came back from the zoo. The lady kept saying there were no rooms available, and would not listen when I said I understood we would not get a key I just wanted to get the check-in process done when it wasn't busy. She acted like I was asking for something that was not doable. The funny thing is when I was downstairs the next morning the same clerk was behind the desk and greeted some new guests very nicely and then proceded to ask if they wanted to an early check-in so all they would have to do later in the day is pick up the key!! Cleaning staff was very pleasant and did a wonderful job on our room. I thought the hotel was really great and the location superb. I would come back here. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel was charming, clean, friendly staff and 3 blocks away from the Gaslamp Quarter. I call this stumbling distance if you know what I mean. "Historic Hotel in a Prime Location"
The Horton Grand is located in the Gaslamp District and has everything you need in walking distance. We walked around and read menus to decide where we would dine each evening and breakfast the following morning. The Ghirardelli chocolate shop and Seaport Village were both big draws for us and took minutes to reach on foot. The hotel room was clean, […] with a nice view of the street and the balconies. My only complaint is the squeakiness of the floors from the room above, which I found to be more disruptive than the noise from the street on a Saturday night. "Disappointing hotel - good location"
I think this hotel has a higher rating than it deserves. It's a rundown old hotel that needs a renovation and clean-up (except for the beautiful courtyard). It could pass as "quaint" if it had delivered in other areas but, alas, it did not. The staff was unpleasant. - A few really nice staff members, but a few were outwardly rude and hostile. When […] I asked for an extra blanket, I was told it would be a $15 fee. Our room wasn't cleaned while we were there. This wouldn't have been much of a problem, but by the 2nd day our little trash cans were really over-flowing. It was a least a 15 minute wait every time we dropped off or picked up the car with valet parking. The valets were very nice and obviously hard-working, but I think they were just under-staffed. We could hear every step the people above us took, and we could hear the TVs from the rooms next store. It made sleeping rather difficult. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
