"Great ocean views"
The view and proximity to the ocean are uncompareable. We wanted to be by the ocean and we were. We loved walking on the beach and even saw dolphons playing in the waves. Unbelieveable! Rooms were a little worn looking but clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Old and smelly hotel"

"Disappointed - comparable to a Motel 6."
My husband and I booked this hotel based on its location (right on the beach) and because its dog friendly. The location was fabulous, and you could tell the lobby had recently been redone. However, the hotel is incredibly old and the rooms were run down, dingy, and tiny. When we first entered our room we were confronted with an overwhelming musty smell […] that remained for the duration of our stay. The windows needed to be replaced and a draft was constantly present; therefore, we had to leave the heater running the whole time and found ourselves struggling to stay warm. Additionally, the heater wasn't in the bathroom, so the bathroom was always freezing. The single bed was a DOUBLE and pillows were lumpy (luckily we brought our own pillows - but shouldn't be a requirement) .... one thing my husband and I look forward to on vacation is the ability to sprawl on a large bed. I called before making the reservation to find out if the pool was heated and the answer was yes. When we arrived, there was a sign that pool was not heated. The kids were super disappointed and we probably would have stayed somewhere else if we had known. Other than that, it was great. We arrived early (around noon) prepared to be turned away (check in time is 4 PM) but we were warmly received and offered a room immediately on the ground floor facing the ocean. I was asked to pay for parking, when it did not state this on booking website. and "park at own risk" outside! Pool was NOT heated, contrary to website, and Hot-Tub was "being repaired" (This was the important part of the visit for our kids). There was no food at the bar, and it was cold unless you sat by the fire. A cup of Tea was $4.25 !!! in the […] restaurant. Staff were helpful enough, some were very good... But overall we got the feeling of being ripped-off. Charge as much as possible, and deliver as little as possible. We did get a refund for some of the room rate after we complained about the pool and hot-tub not being operating. "Literally on the beach!"
Attended a wedding in Monterey. Stayed 1 night. Pros: On the beach, large sandy beach (rock & tree free), near downtown Monterey, near shopping, on-site restaurant, easy parking, I noticed bike rentals near the entry, it right on the bike/walk path. Cons: Window view is on same side of entry doors, so you really are not going to leave your window shade […] open very much because everyone walks right pass your window and can directly see in ..and see everything. I booked an ocean view (which was a great view), just had to keep shade down most of the time for privacy. If the entries/walk ways were on the backside..this place would be the best place in the area. It does have a cheaper feel to it, but it's nice and safe. The beach is amazing. The check in was fine, but I couldn't really rate the service as I didn't use/need any services. The Best Western logo was missing off the sign, so I wasn't sure if they were changing ownership and another person came in wondering if they were at the right place. "Think twice before staying here"
We asked for an upgrade in our room because the room given to us overlooked a parking lot w/busy cars going by. We were moved to a room over looking the ocean for $60/night more! The problem from our window people walked by and the view of the ocean was blocked by a thick railing. Also, the carpet was in need of replacement. "Overpriced but nice stay"
Can't beat the view at this hotel, especially if you have an ocean front room. The rooms aren't all that. Rather simple actually and old looking, although it was kept as clean as it could be. The bird watching was worth the stay and the beach access was great. We didn't know about the $18. a night parking fee. That rubbed us the wrong way a little, […] especially after spending an arm and a leg for the room. Then we spent the other arm and the other leg at their restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was nice.. spectacular view, nice ambiance. But $77. for 2 of us.. a bit pricy. Our waiter was great. Friendly. They did upgrade us to an ocean !front view because we got there at 4 pm and they said they didn't have a room clean for us. We appreciated that. We didn't hear anybody else at night because the ocean waves were pounding! Kind of kept me up to tell the truth. It was a short drive to Cannery Row. One exit further down Highway 1 to be exact will take you to Monterey and the surrounding areas. That was nice too. This is an over priced under accommodated hotel, that is directly on the coast, which is why the prices are so high. "Isolated, pleasant and adequate."
Overall very nice. The gentleman that checked us in was a bit grumpy but all other interactions with staff were pleasant. Strangely I saw him being grumpy with someone else as well. I just don't think customer service is his forte. The room was adequate with some updates, the heater ran a bit too much and made some weird noises but nothing intolerable. […] The TV selections were limited and there was no preview guide so you are left to flip through channels which really stank. Plenty of parking which they charge a ridiculous $18 for, nearby Supermarket, cafes and such (about a mile) and PLENTY of empty beach with wildlife. We watched both dolphins and seals out the window as we ate at the cafe, no shops really within walking distance. 10 minutes to the aquarium. Cafe was tolerable for breakfast but second time did upset my stomach a bit, probably the fresh spinach. Brought dog and she did not not like the open design of the stairways and we were a bit far from the elevator, which was a bit outdated and "clingy" as well. Calling this place a "Resort" is a stretch, and it is no longer a Best Western, but for the money it was great to not be in the other cruddy hotels next to the nudie book stores and otherwise seedy part of town. Location, location, location could not have been better, close to everything and easy to get on and off interstate. Hotel is very clean but just older, but that did not stoop us from liking it so much. They are doing good for the climate they have to endure. Breakfast was amazing in the cafe along with the view. "Nice view, dated rooms"
Hotel lobby and restaurant are nice, but the rooms are so dated. Old wicker furniture, thin, icky carpet, heater didn't work well. The room was freezing, even with heat set at 75. I will always stay here when I visit. It is steps from the beach. I woke up and ran on the beach. My son was happy because he could wake up and play in the sand. It was hard to get him away from this hotel. The hotel is a little tired, but it was clean. I saw reviews about the floors being dirty. "Sand City is aFantastic location!!!"
This hotel sits on one of the most beautiful beaches in California!! It's view Monteray Bay can't be beat by it's competition no matter how hard they try. It is too bad that they have not done something better with their guest rooms. The furnishings are "out of the past". The rooms appear to be furnished with used old furniture from other hotels that […] have upgraded. There were several things that I did not like about this hotel. 1) It is a bit far away from Monterey. If you want to go into town you need to drive. 2) The ceiling in the bathroom was leaking, so the floor of the bathroom was wet for our entire stay. 3) The A/C Heater was broken. It would only pump cold air into our room. All of the buttons did not […] work so we had to unplug it, and that made the room very stuffy. 4) They do not tell you about an $18 per night charge to park your car until you arrive. "staying on the beach"
wanted a hotel with a beach view.. got one ON THE BEACH, in fact this one is the only one on the beach. walked out of our room, down the steps onto the beach. the room was very clean, bed was extremely comfy. the rooms are so insulated that you have to open your door to hear the ocean. "Great location, management needs work."
Great location, right on the beach with lots of places to sit and watch the waves, indoors and out. We were traveling with our two dogs, so we were given a room on the parking lot side, (which I completely understand), and it was a little beat up. I think our biggest complaint would be about the restaurant. The staff seemed unhappy, and we often heard […] them complaining about work in front of guests. We tried to order room service one night but there was no menu in the room, so I went up to the restaurant to order from them directly.There was a club sandwich on the lunch menu, but when I tried to order one the grumpy woman working flat out told me no. She claimed they only make bacon in the morning and then use the leftovers for lunch.This doesn't make sense for two reasons: One, there is a bacon cheeseburger on the dinner menu, and a pizza with bacon also. She sent me away with a menu and told me to call the room service number. I tried, no one picked up, so I called the restaurant. When we finally got our pizza we loved it and made it a point to save some for breakfast. Our room didn't have a microwave, so I went back up to the restaurant hoping they could heat it up for us, but was told they couldn't do that because once food leaves the kitchen it starts to grow bacteria. "Room with a view"
We went to celebrate our anniversary. It was recommended to us by another couple. The reason we chose that hotel over the others was because it is directly on the beach. It is an average hotel with a great view. All the basic necessities. We were very disappointed in the housekeeping. The second afternoon when we came back, the beds were made and the […] bathroom cleaned, but there was still a dirty glass that wasn't replaced. The shampoo and conditioner that I used wasn't replaced and the bag in the ice bucket wasn't disposed of. They just left another bag next to the bucket. The door also stuck and was hard to get into. We spent a lot of money to stay there and expected at least the basic cleaning would have been done. We also didn't understand the need to charge extra for parking.
