The Piazza San Marco, famous for its pigeons, campanile, basilica, Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) and expensive cafes, is unmissable. The waterfront views are legendary and more gondolas depart from here than anywhere else in the city. In season the Piazza teems with day trippers though just a block or two away streets are quiet and offer more museums and palaces to explore.

My wife and I have just returned from four nights at the Bauer. We booked for a Deluxe Room and were discretly upgraded to a Junior Suite without realising !! What is good about The Bauer: superb location and position on the Grand Canal; huge palatial lobby areas; an army of professional and attentive staff; very high quality spacious accommodation. What is bad about the Bauer: nothing !! I price-researched all the 5 Star Hotels in Venice before booking and my feeling is that you will get the best $$$$$ value here if you are doing Venice in style and can afford to go 5 Star. Page down past a couple of frankly ridiculous recent negative reviews and you will see other savvy British travellers raving about the Bauer like we are !!!

This hotel comes in three sections. The old Palladio building is amazing. The newer part next is not as charming on the outside, but I'm sure the rooms are lovely inside. Hotels.com's rate had me staying in Casa Nova, their 'annex' just across a small alley in another building. It was just fine, quiet, and very clean. Save money, stay there, and go splurge for dinner at Rest Da Ivo a short walk. The only complaint I have is that the pigeons fly all around the beautiful Grande Canal patio during breakfast (maybe lunch too, but I didn't try that). It is so bad that when my friend got up from the table, a pigeon flew onto his chair eyeing his plate. Others nearby were not so lucky as the pigeons jumped on their table. NOT ACCEPTABLE. Breakfast buffet was not included in the Hotels, com rate. It is 50 Euros PER PERSON, and not worth the money in my opinion...especially with birds on your table. Go across the bridge and just on the right is a coffee shop with delicious pastries for near nothing.

After reading all of the reviews on Hotels.com and in travel magazines, we had very high expectations of the Bauer. While the location was excellent, we found the service a bit lacking and the room appointments not what one would expect at a "five-star" hotel. Check-in was easy and fast and our room ready prior to official check-in time. The room was very dark and quiet, which enabled good sleep at night. We found the concierge staff to be adequate; almost having to pull information from them. There was NO tourist information in the room either. Each time we came and went from the hotel, we expected an acknowledgement from the front desk staff, not necessarily by name, but at least a "bon giorno" would have been nice. No doorman, either, so we found it a bit of an impersonal experience. There was no gift shop for amenities of any kind, no ice/vending machines either. The room had no clock, no iron or ironing board. Turndown service happened every evening, but no mint or chocolate. We've received this at lesser hotels. The bathroom had no washcloths, no soap dishes either by the sink or the tub, no make-up mirror. The robes were nice, however. While the location was convenient, we're sure there are other hotels nearby that would cost less and provide at least as much. Besides, saving money on the hotel leaves you with more to spend on coffee, gelato, pasta...and you'll need it!

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of touring Italy in mid-May 2008. Before arriving in Venice, we stayed in Florence at the Westin Excelsior, a true 5-star hotel. The Bauer Hotel in Venice is the exact opposite of the Westin. From the moment we checked in to this gaudy, cheesy, 1970's style hotel we were shockingly disappointed. The staff were snotty and rude and acted as if they couldn't believe the questions I were asking. The water taxi drivers were nice enough to help us with our bags, which is more than I can say for the staff of the Bauer. It's almost as if nobody working in the hotel had been trained in the hospitality industry at all. Our room was small and dank and overlooked a noisy alley. A nasty used green wash rag was left in our shower (and there it remained for the duration of our stay). The room smelled as if it has been doused in some sort of deodorizer and made me nauseous. Yes, it is located right next to San Marco Square, but so what. Everything is an easy walk in Venice so location is not a huge factor. I tried to cancel or change my reservation when I arrived with no luck. The hotel refused to let me cancel without an early-cancellation fee and informed me that if I wanted to upgrade, it would cost me an extra $5,000 euro PER NIGHT! I'm not sure if the hotel clerk was actually serious or just intentionally being a jackass (I suspect the latter). In any case, I was not going to give the Bauer the satisfaction of any additional money, so my wife and I suffered in their nasty, hole of a hotel for 3 nights. The bottom line about Venice, is that there are many small, boutique hotels (mostly 3-stars), that would provide a very nice stay. I would recommend finding a smaller, highly-rated 3-star property if you are looking to Venice. Don't be fooled by the "5-stars" on this dump of a property and avoid the Bauer hotel at any and all costs.
