"better of sleeping in your car!"
I know this is not a 5 star hotel, but the LEAST you expect from any hotel is a clean bed.. well mine had a condom wraper in between the sheets and long black hairs too!! How disgusting is that?. Called the front desk they offered go change me to another room ( conviniantly located right in front of noisy ice maker) because there was nothing else they […] could do. Called the manager the day after and she just acted like it was not a big deal, I guess Ms Patel is used to guests complaining about her nasty, poorly managed hotel. The rooms ARE newly renovated, and nicely so. The management was disagreeable and argumentative, and the grounds were muddy and strewn with construction debris. Hotel was remodeling which I knew previously. Rooms were very clean but was extremely hard to get an Internet connection. ( signal was extremely poor) It was stated that the hotel is 12 miles from Newark city center. That is nor true. It's 22 MILES. Room was good but the TV could have had some HD programming. The place is very old and the outside is under major rennovation. Our room was very clean, modernf and comfortable, however, if you desire 2 beds you will be placed on the side facing the highway. There is some traffice noise and in fact our first morning was horrible but thereafter during the week tollerable. Helpful front desk. I switched from non-smoking to smoking. I also got a free upgrade from 1 King to Double Queen. Lost my key card a few times, front desk helpful and courteous. Didn't use room service much, but when I did, they even nicely arranged some things I'd left strewn about. Inside the room is nicer than the building itself. The floorplan/layout […] is an annoyingly long hallway. Parts of the building needed/were in construction. Building is only in a moderately convenient location - only a 1 way street in front of the hotel. Continental breakfast isn't very great.You'd better hand-check the bagels for the hit-or-miss freshness. "Price Gouged During the Power Outage"
Please do not support this particular HoJo. During the power outage in NJ 10-29-11-7 many hotels were filled to capacity. We had reservations that we made on 10/31 for 10/31 and 11/1. On 11/2 when I asked to extend my stay the clerk at the desk said they were raising the rates 100% from what we paid. There is a major renovation of the exterior ongoing, and it is a construction site. Major improvements have already been done inside. This hotel is being renovated. There were stacks of plywood and other building supplies and equipment outside and one side of the building was down to the framework. The carpet in the stairway was old and a bit smelly. Hopefully that will be replaced too. The room was in brand-new condition. If I did not open the sliding glass door onto the small terrace, […] I could imagine that I should have been paying two or three times what it cost. Since I stayed there just for the overnight for a business meeting the next day, the only negative about which I could truly complain is that breakfast is made available in the front office building with space for perhaps four people at once if they don't mind sitting at the same table and walking in the rain from their rooms to get there. "OK to stay in a hurricane except..."
The cable went out so we had no tv and could not find out info on streets blocked. Foundation was all dug up and there was mud all around. The office was flooding and the parking also flooded, but the drain was fixed before we left. Our non-smoking room smelled horribly of smoke. I don't usually write reviews for my hotel visits because they were never anything that special. This hotel is an exception because I would never expect such awesome service from a 2-Star hotel. I was looking forward to this stay for the sole reason that Expedia had a last minute deal of a discount Jacuzzi. That jacuzzi was just amazing for a "budget" hotel. The bathroom door had to be slammed in order to close all the way. The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious enough. My friend and I were hungry in the middle of the night. We were surprised to see that they had coffee and hot water with teas available in the lobby all night. They also had a microwave. We were able to make Ramen that night. The breakfast was also good. There was a selection of cereal, muffins, bagels,oatmeal, and they even had a waffle maker. There were different blends of coffee and juice flavors. I checked in the Howard Johnson Hotel on route 22 in Plainfield, NJ and to my dismay, nothing was as they has advertised online. The place reeks of 18 variants of mildew. The hallways stink of mildew in a way that physically throws your back. They are dark, they are ugly. I'm just about the least "needy" hotel guest out there. As long as the room is clean and everything works as it should I'm happy. Such was not the case this time. The A/C cut out throughout the night and I had to get out of bed 5 times through the night to restart it. "The Ho Jo in Plainfield"
our stay wasn't the best, but what do you expect for the low price? Upon arrival, the front desk receptionist was not very friendly-we stood and stared at him as he took incoming calls-he actually took the calls rather than putting people on hold. As someone with a Restuarnt Management degree, the people IN FRONT OF YOU come first, not the ones on the […] phone. He then informed us that the water would be out for about 2 hours while they repaired a broken pipe on the second floor-for this inconvenience, he upgraded us to a king bed free of charge which I was pleased with. Then we went to our room-the front desk person neglected to tell us that the ENTIRE second floor was under renovation-it was disgusting-the entire carpet was ripped up and there were brackets laying all down the hallway from the ceiling which had also been torn down-it was very dusty and dirty...just awful. Our room was not the cleanist to say the least...the carpet had not been vacuumed in a while and there was an entire bar of soap in the toilet...theTV was nice though-the bed was quite uncomfortable and the A/C unit did not work properly. Our stay included a complimentary breakfast but when we arrived in the evening, the cereal from that morning was still out in an uncovered bin-yuck. "Rooms are OK, hotel is a mess..."
This is my first stay at a Howard Johsons hotel. I have stayed at other budget hotels in the past (Red Roof, Motel 6, etc.) and always felt that they were simple, yet clean. This Howard Johnson is very dirty. The halls had cigarette butts, warn carpet down to the threads and all types of holes in the walls, stains, etc. It really needs a complete remodel. […] The rooms looked like they were recently done and were fine. The AC only worked part of the time and the TV remote only change the channels - it did not turn the TV on or off nor change the volume. The manager on duty could not have been less pleasant.
