A nice and clean downtown hotel. The hotel is quite nice and the pool area, while small, has great hours. The only issue we had was the restaurant opens late for breakfast (7:30), at least on weekends, add to that the fact that it actually opened 15 minutes late made our timelines quite tight.

Rooms are very small along with the pool area. Hotel was a good choice of location as it is in downtown Winnipeg. We did not have to travel far at all when it came to what we wanted to see.

Traveling on business I chose this hotel for the price and location. Price worked out as expected, but location was not exactly what I expected. During my stay the hotel was undergoing extensive renovations and upgrades. Half the floors were being worked on while the others were the rest were available. It was handled well and other that sharing an […] occasion elevator ride with a construction worker unobtrusive. I expect that after the summer ('11) rooms will be nicer than during my stay. I found the decor bland but well maintained. Free high-speed internet was helpful. No real business center to speak of. Pool very small and in the basement. Plenty of exercise equipment down there though. An attractive restaurant once you get past the bar entrance off the lobby. Food was unpretentious, but healthy if not cheap. Location is a bit iffy, but with certain benefits. It is right across the street from the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the university and a very large Hudson's Bay Company. It is on Portage which is the main street through downtown, but it is a ways down from the main part of downtown and the old town. Twee folks might find the neighborhood directly to the north a little to real for their tastes, but it was quaint by my standards. Portage and Colony is a good place to catch a bus and it was easy to get a taxi at the hotel very quickly. Hotel staff was uniformly polite and helpful. Parking in the area is expensive. Winnipeg's powers that be have some counterproductive ideas about how to price parking. Many hotels soak you if you come with a car but here the problem is clearly the city rather than the hotel (which makes nothing on parking). I was told that in the fall this situation would be remedied somewhat by the restoration access to an adjacent parking structure that is currently unavailable. It was difficult to find by road due to the one-way and location on corner of a busy intersection. The parking arrangment was strange, we had to pay by the hour until 6pm, then a flat rate from 6pm - 9am. Then we had to get up by 9am to again pay by the hour.

The stay in Winnipeg was overall a good stay. Good: Check in process was easy. Reserved parking close to the hotel. Nice staff. Comfortable King size bed. Overall stay was good. Not so good: The heater and room had a musty odor but was easily aired out. The hot tub broke down and didn't head past 98 degrees when we were there, but the repair guys […] were there to fix it so the hotel was on top of it. Other Comments: The hotel is downtown Winnipeg, so we ran into lots of people asking for change and cigarettes while taking a walk to see the downtown area. It made taking a walk in the evening not very appealing. Just to note, all things are closed on major holidays (Good Friday) including the casinos, bars, stores, etc. This is not what I am used to coming from North Dakota where many things are open even on holidays. I stayed 2 nights. The ice machine on my floor did not work the first night. The bathroom smelled of wet materials not dried properly; the room reeked of unwashed humans; the smell of the bed was repugnant; the room was rather cramped; one phone did not work; the toilet paper was of extremely poor quality; I wanted to write a letter but there was no […] letter-sized paper or envelope in the room; normally I get many movie channels in hotel rooms but this hotel had only one; I would have liked a simple breakfast delivered to the room on the morning I was leaving (toast and coffee) but the option was one of two big breakfasts (rather inconvenient); the elevator on the fifth floor worked poorly - frequently by-passing the fifth floor on its way up or down; the bread in the restaurant tasted old; I could not even get whole wheat bread in the restaurant, just 60% whole wheat (I do not eat white bread); and finally the bathtub had hair from the last occupant (the solution to this problem is not to work the cleaning staff harder. I could not help thinking if the guest, who is supposed to be happy, was so unhappy, how must the employees feel? The solution to the cleaning problem is to give your staff more time to clean each room so that a better job can be done.) I will never again stay at a Holiday Inn but I must add that, through it all, the staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. Read more

I was quite appalled I was required to give $100 deposit even though they had my visa and the rooms were small. The ceilings are 7 feet high so jumping allowed in the hallways. You have to pay 15.00 for parkade parking too.
