I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental from 23-27 Nov. They had a “pay 3 nights for 4” rate. The hotel is located at one end of Market Street, on Sansome street. Market street is where the main shopping area is. It is also a short walk to the bay area or you can take the trolley ride. When the sun sets, the hotel area can get quiet and I did feel unsafe as there were many beggars and the homeless along the streets near the hotel. It’s better on weekdays as there are many office people going about. The hotel entrance is very understated. If you like a quiet discreet entrance this is the hotel for you. Once you enter, the lobby area is quite small, leading on to the hotel’s single restaurant. Fortunately there was a private entry to the lift area. I stayed on the 43rd floor in the bridge to bridge room. The one thing you really pay for are the stupendous views. I could see unobstructed views from the Golden Gate bridge, ferry building, Alcatraz island, all the way to the bay bridge on the other side. The beautiful Transamerica building is right in front of you! The hotel even provides a pair of binoculars! The room itself was huge but the interior looked a bit old. I think the only part that was renovated was the shower area. The king bed was extremely comfortable and I think there were 8 different pillows which I absolutely loved. The temperature control was also very easy to use. Complimentary shoe shine service was very quick too! The bathroom was small and didn’t have any high tech functions like tv in the mirror etc. The rain shower made up for it and the Molton Brown products were fantastic. Housekeeping was excellent and they even provided molton brown toothbrush/paste set which I requested for. There was some problem with the water temperature controls as when the hot water was turned off, boiling hot water kept pouring out for a good 4-5 minutes. There were no complimentary tea/coffee facilities but they were nice enough to provide a kettle. Room service was excellent and very efficient. Ben one of the servers had excellent service, knowledgeable and was friendly. The food was very good and presented well. The concierge was friendly but lacked that personal touch one would expect at a high end hotel (this was very different from my experience at The Langham in Chicago)… They try to address you by name but most of them forgot or were too busy behind the concierge counter. They should hire more doormen as it was tiring having to open those heavy doors by myself on quite a few occasions. I had breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant. Service was average but the food was quite good. I would recommend staying at this hotel for it’s amazing views. I watched sunset and sunrise over San Francisco bay and will always take those picture post card perfect memories with me. I was lucky that the weather during my stay was very good, with clear blue skies and no fog! It is definitely worth it. If you’re looking for modern interiors, high tech, amazing personalized service then this is not the hotel for you.
"Luxury except for the towels"

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental for a 2 night business trip. The king bedded room had wonderful corner views with large windows overlooking the city and Bay. However, given that the charge for the room was $815 plus taxes per night, it was neither large, nor elaborately furnished. The decor was spare and dull. However, the bed linens were of beautiful quality and the bed very comfortable. Our biggest complaint was the bathroom which had only 1 sink (for the money it was skimpy, especially as I was traveling with my husband) and all the towels were scratchy and threadbare. In fact, one of the bath towels had a hole--definitely not the quality of towels at equivalent luxury hotels or worthy of the Mandarin Oriental standards. The staff was gracious and accommodating, however, given a choice, next time we will stay at the St. Regis or one of the many other 5 star hotels in the city.
"A great hotel, but not the best MO."

Mandarin Oriental is an amazing chain of really first class hotels so it's important to get this review in context. The MO San Francisco is great hotel with excellent rooms and trademark MO first class service. It's just not in the same league though as the best MO properties such as the New York branch of the two in Hong Kong. Rooms are a bit too bland for that and the hotel layout means a reasonably small restaurant thats a little lacking in character. There is a well stocked bar with good staff who have a thing for gin - expect a lot of knowledge of small batch gins and even a home made special tonic water mixer.

This is a fashionable hotel with a great downtown (business section) location. It is modern, clean, the service is good, and there are good restaurants around the corner. I went there on business but it also seemed like it could be a romantic hotel as well.
"Bridge rooms are best"

Elegant, busy downtown hotel. The champagne welcome was appreciated after the transcontinental flight. Restaurant was noisy and service was slow. Food was excellent. The reason to stay there, however, are the "Bridge rooms" which provide breathtaking views from the Golden Gate to the Bay bridges. The rooms are clean but slightly small - square footage is expensive in that beautiful city. Staff is friendly and helpful.
"Great View & Great Service"

From the moment we arrived, my husband and I had a wonderful two-night stay at the Mandarin Oriental. Beautiful view from our room and gracious service throughout the hotel. When our room wasn't ready at check-in, we were treated to a glass of champagne in the bar. Everything in the room was spotless upon arrival, and the housekeeping staff kept it that way. I didn't want to leave!

The welcome itself gave me a glimpse on how wonderful our stay would be. There were fresh fruits, a welcome note, and personalized stationery. Minutes after we checked-in, they brought in Jasmine tea and cookies. I must say the cookies were some of the best I've had. The room was spic-and-span. I loved our super comfortable beds, fluffy pillows, and bathrobes. The bathroom was spacious. Our room, which was on the 41st floor, afforded us a great view of the San Francisco skyline and of some of SFO's famous landmarks like the TransAmerica Pyramid, Coit Tower and even Alcatraz. Come sunset, the view was amazing! Convenient location. We just walked from the hotel to the Union Square, malls, Chinatown, and even Coit Tower. Really professional and efficient staff who are really good at anticipating the needs of their guests and meeting, even surpassing them. Highly recommended.
"Great views, great location, great staff"

MO San Fran (for Trip Advisor) Second time here and possibly even better than last time. Great helpful, knowledgable staff. On the first morning, I was down at 6:30am (jet-lag) and was given some great advise from a tall guy on duty (didn't get his name) and his female colleague (who had spent some time with Starbucks and gave some advise on where would be open and to get the pastries warmed — good advise, thanks!) Charisse was very helpful with recommendations on getting around. Housekeeping very good as were those who picked up the luggage and got us taxis. Only small slip was that our room was not ready when we returned after a three day trip to Eugene. I mentioned this on the Guest Survey form and received a phone call from Alex at Customer Services when I was back in the UK thanking me for staying and also for my comments. She apologised for the particular issue and said how much they appreciated being informed of areas where they had fallen short so that they could strive to improve. Other than that one small point, everything went very smoothly and our stay was professionally executed. I intend to return. read less Add a photo

We stayed 3 nights at the Mandarin Oriental San Francisco and loved every minute of it. The staff and hotel experience is totally 5 stars. When we arrived, our car was quickly taken to parking and we were whisked from the entrance into a lightning fast check in; our room on the 47th floor was gorgeous. The views from the room are spectacular, as are the views from the sky corridor between elevator and room. Our room was spotless. The windows actually open (from the bottom, about 12", for fresh air, very nice feature!) Soft robes and slippers are complimentary, Moulton Brown soaps & toiletries are great. Bed is very comfortable and an assortment of bed pillows are offered. Room service was prompt and delicious. Staff remembered our names (how do they DO that?) Great location, incredible service, charming room - we loved it all and hope to return soon.

I love the location-easy access to shopping. Staff is great but the facilities are average for the Hotel Class--and price--but probably slightly below average for the brand. Views are very good even though maximum potential is crammed into the corners of the building but there's something disjointed. Maybe because the Hotel starts on the 40th floor. I get that is what it takes to get the view but it's also good reason for the lack of synergy. Full disclosure...one of my favorite properties anywhere is The Mandarin London and this Hotel lacks a little-buzz/pulse (call it what you may) and also some of the magic (unexpected goodies or amenities delivered to the room everyday, two world class restys). Staff however are friendly AND extremely competent. It's not that I care if it's expensive but this particular Mandarin probably doesn't justify their rate. Fellow Clientele?? Maybe another reason things don't feel right-cold aloof and wearing sunglasses at night. It's hard to be impressed but if you're flying under the radar this is a good place to do so.
