Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"At these prices, you charge extra for internet?"
08/17/14 Karen K New York
First, I'll never give 5 stars to a hotel that charges hundreds of dollars for a room, and then tacks on an internet charge. Nonetheless, I would only go 4 stars based on other factors, but a solid 4. Priced as 5-star, so I'm comparing to that. We visit San Francisco regularly on business, but on vacation we decided to splurge on the Mandarin. Location, comfortable bed, and service are top priorities for me. Details: LOCATION: We usually prefer closer to Union Square, but this was an easier walk to Fisherman's Wharf and Little Italy. 4, not 5, star location. BED: Comforter cover is soft, washable cotton (5-star level). Great sheets. Pillows and mattress were not as comfortable as Westin. 3.5 stars overall. SERVICE: Bellman, check-in desk, etc., were all very gracious and attentive. 5 stars +. BATHROOM: Large, but lots of weird wasted space. Only one sink. Toilet not separate. Need to step into deep tub to shower. 3-star ROOM: Good size, but very odd layout. 4-star BATHROBES: Two, of different types, already in room. 5-star COFFEEMAKER: Not in room, but graciously delivered when requested, with milk. 5-star BAR AND RESTAURANT: Very good breakfast. Specialty in bar is gin and tonic -- housemade tonic has zero carbonation and little flavor, do NOT recommend.

Had a great time in San Francisco made greater by our stay at the Mandarin. The room was spacious, clean, and had a wonderful view, especially at night with the whole city lit up. The service was top notch, and the actual location of the property was pretty quiet for being in the heart of everything with all the noise and bustle just steps away. We wanted to take an overnight trip to the wine country and weren't sure how to go about it and the staff helped us with everything. They were so wonderful.
"Excellent Hotel, But Expensive"
08/16/14 Mark P
The Mandarin is a beautiful hotel with large, comfortable rooms and an excellent health club. Service was good, though not great: Our check in was unduly delayed, but I think that is not a typical experience. The location is good: Sansome is a relatively quiet street, but the hotel is within easy walking distance of many attractions. The quality of the hotel, including its views, is first rate, but I take it down to 4 stars simply because of the very high price: This is not a great value at the room rates.
"Great Location and Service"
When we arrived our room was not ready, so the gave us a free drink in the lounge and sent tea to the room. We have a corner Golden Gate Room. The view is to die for. There are many great restaurants near by. This is a first class hotel with all of the amenities.

We stay here once or twice a year usually just overnight after landing at SFO. This hotel has panoramic views of the city no matter which side you face, although we prefer the Golden Gate side. The hotel underwent a renovation 2 years ago which is tasteful if a bit boring. Check in and Greeting is always efficient and friendly. Bellman is the same for the last 4 years at least. Very nice helpful guy! This time room service was a bit slow as the hotel was booked and many guests had ordered ahead of us, however they warned us ahead of time so we were expecting it. Now the little gripes: In a hotel in this bracket WHY, WHY, WHY are the charging for WIFI???? I can't remember paying for this service in Europe in a hotel of this price range in YEARS!?! Plus this is Technology Central, business travellers to this region must surely be annoyed that they must go thru all that sign in rigomarole with a $20 charge and only 2 devices????? Seriously??? Second, this hotel used to have lovely toiletries from Hermes. Now they have some strange smelling no-brand toiletries that are a complete let down. Breakfast was yummy, but as other guests have noted service is a bit slow in the restaurant. Not a problem for us as we were on holiday but if you have a meeting could be annoying. We love the location of this hotel, it is downtown a bit removed from Union Square, but we think it is a nice walk. This area does seem to have more homeless people around than in past years but I think that is sort of the economy as a whole not just this area. In spite of my little gripes, we will stay here again and I just hope that they figure out how absurd the extra WIFI charges are…….
"Basically a Waldorf Astroria in downtown San Fran"
Nice hotel if you need to stay in downtown San Fran. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 5 star hotel. That being said, if your use to places like the Waldorf Astoria, u might be a little disappointed. We thought the room size was a little small ---- my wife and I had a suite. If we need to stay in downtown again, well try the Hilton and get a suite there. Probably be a bit cheaper plus you'll have access to the executive lounge.
"Good service and comfortable rooms"

We recently stayed here on our first visit to San Francisco as tourists. The hotel is located in the financial district but was easy walking distance to the Market street shops (15mins) as well as Fishermans Wharf (20mins). It is quiet in the surrounds at night however. We were warmly greet upon arrival and that continued throughout our stay. We had communicated with the concierge prior to our arrival and they secured some great restaurant reservations for us. We had a room on the top floor (48) with a great view. The rooms were very comfortable - not only did the airconditioning lower the temperature enough for us, but you could open the windows to get some fresh air - unusual in most high rise hotel rooms. The beds were comfortable, and I liked the convenient power sockets on each of the bedside tables. The gym was well equipped and the housekeeping was excellent. On the downside - we had to pay for WiFi - WHY? And although our laptop connection was good it was not so for our iPhones. Annoying especially as we had paid for it. There were also no tea or coffee making facilities in our rooms. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
"Fabulous room, slow service in restaurant"
08/02/14 Cris-in-Bkk Bangkok, Thailand
We absolutely love our room at the Mandarin Oriental SF. Mind you, it should be this good, based on the price you're paying for it, and what you should be able to expect from the Mandarin Oriental brand. The room we stayed in, (4817, on the top floor) is about 350sqft and feels spacious. All the to-be-expected amenities in the room, in neutral, calming tones and a contemporary design. The bed is extremely comfortable and we had a great view over the city. Our package included valet parking and continental breakfasts, which we got by calling the hotel directly, in stead of booking online (I checked multiple sites as well as the MO's own site), and worked out about $100 per night cheaper than if we'd booked it online and payed for those extras separately. We found the lobby bar, during the week, is staffed by an excellent bartender/sommelier named David, who creates some very good gin concoctions and is a great conversationalist. We also had a late bite to eat here, which was tasty if not a bit slow to arrive from the kitchen. That slow-service experience was repeated on a much larger scale the next morning, when we went for our continental breakfasts. It took about 10 minutes after having been seated for someone to take our order, then we waited about 45 minutes (!) for our continental breakfasts (granola, fruit and 2 pastries each) to arrive. The tea I had ordered at sitting down arrived after our breakfasts finally arrived, and then only after having prompted the staff twice again. When the food finally arrived, it was delicious. Then the bill took another while to receive. All in all and despite the high food quality, the experience we had in the lobby restaurant is not what it should have been in a Mandarin Oriental. Having said all that, I would stay here again in a heartbeat, because the room is fantastic. I hate to be made waiting, so would just eat somewhere else.

"SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE!!!!"
07/28/14 JasonSW Englewood, Colorado
I was expecting great service from all the reviews I have read. I was blown away! If you want to be treated with respect and kindness and can afford the prices this is the place to go. I arrived at 11:30 pm at night, tired, dressed in shorts, sandals and a t-shirt and I received awesome treatment. The front desk personnel were awesome, my bags were carried to my room and I had tea delivered (thanks to the bellman for thinking of me) because the hotel knew my flight was delayed 8 hours! Complimentary car service to various parts of the city and pickup! Awesome views from the room!
