Hampshire Hotel - Theatre District Amsterdam - Amsterdam

I stayed in the Hampshire on two occasions on a recent trip, 4 nights in all. I'm generally not fussy about hotels, and I had read reviews so was prepared for things like the carpet, but I was a bit shocked when I saw my first room - it was in the basement, next to the custodial laundry facilities. The carpet was filthy, and the heat had clearly not […] been on in there for a long, long time. I had to get someone to help me figure out how to turn it on. I saw perhaps 10 other guests in the hotel during my entire stay, so it didn't seem like the hotel was full. My 2nd time there I got a room on the 2nd floor which was even smaller, but a huge improvement. Carpet was in equally dire shape. It also seemed like every day, something was not working in the hotel - one morning the electricity was out in the dining area, another day the internet was out, I never saw anyone working the bar though the hotel said there was a nightly happy hour. Never any signage, and staff always seemed surprised when I asked what was going on. Breakfast was a bit expensive, but you can get it cheaper if you book ahead. Free coffee all the time, which is very nice. Location of the hotel is GREAT, price was great, I had no problem accessing the free wifi in either room, staff is accommodating but not particularly friendly. I would definitely stay here again, but people who expect a high degree of service or any amount of luxury would probably do better elsewhere. Read more

A real gem of a hotel in the Leizeplein neighborhood. We stayed 13 nights in a subcompact room which was bright and light due to an entire wall of windows facing a nondescript courtyard. Free Internet including two computers, free wifi and free tea/coffee in the lobby. The room was large by European standards; perhaps 14x16 including space for a teeny […] built in closet including a safe and serviceable but small bathroom with built in hair dryer. The room was kept immaculately clean by attentive housekeeping staff but the carpet was burnt, stained and in desperate need of replacement. There was a small flat screen tv but we never turned it on. The two twin beds placed side by side were comfortable but the bed linens were odd...a flannel fitted mattress cover was covered by a top sheet which was tucked in such a way to make it the bottom sheet. No top sheet provided to keep you from directly touching the thin but warm duvet comforter. Two European pilows, one decorative and one sadly lumpy one for the head. No wash clothes were provided ever. Only a hand towel, tiny bath towel and floor mat. Also the twin beds could not be separated due to built in platform night stands but are made up separately.A standing fan, a desk with chair and a sitting chair rounded out the seating. Great light blocking curtains in this room. Nothing to write home about, but a very budget friendly and clean spot to sleep in a great neighborhood. I stayed at The Hampshire for 2 nights while spending 3 days in Amsterdam. My flight arrived several hours before hotel check in and they allowed me to check in early which was wonderful. My room was small and clean, which is all I expected. The location was perfect as I intended to rent a bicycle or walk for the majority of my trip. I was able to access […] all of the things I intended: museum after museum, the red light district, great food, bike rentals, heineken, and a safe neighborhood. This hotel was exactly what I needed for my trip. I was able to sleep well and had access to my own shower. No sharing. I did not partake in the breakfast during my stay but did help my self to the free coffee and water as needed. Overall my stay was good. I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning on visiting Amsterdam that intends to get out and about to see what the city has to offer. The location is wonderful. Read more

The stay was ok, we didn't stay in the room much because we wanted to see the city. It's walking distance to the van gogh museum and to the tram stops. The staff were very nice, but the facility was not in the best condition. There was no lock on the bathroom door and it handle we zip tied to door. There was no A/C in our room either and it was 90 degrees […] outside. The room was very small and if you opened the window all the way it was difficult to get to the other side of the bed. Let's start with the pros: The hotel is clean, service and staff are friendly, efficient, multi-lingual and very, very nice. The hotel is close to the heart of Amsterdam, right in the Theater District, and a 10-minute walk from the Museum District. It is quiet, clean, and offers complimentary coffee in the morning. Lastly, the prices are honest. You […] need your room card to get into the elevator, which is a nice security touch. Flat-panel TV with plenty of channels and movies in English. Wired Internet in the room. Bathroom was spotless and there was plenty of hot water. Now for the cons: Don't expect to get your strokes like you might from a big hotel chain in the States, where they're after your frequent flier miles or hotel points. There's no grandiose lobby with towering plants, the bar is tiny and unmanned, the elevator can fit two if you're slim and aren't taking suitcases up with you. ;-) The decor, is, well... 60's East Berlin - you kind of expected the Stasi to break in for questioning at any moment. Bed was tiny and well-used, carpet had definitely seen better days. So - if you're in Amsterdam to see the sights and you don't plan on spending lots of time in the hotel, this is a great choice. If you're a lobby-lizard who doesn't like to venture far from a more comfortable room and like a hotel with lots of amenities, break out you wallet and move up the ladder to somtehing nicer. All the stars it has received is because of this. Ah...and the free coffee at the cafeteria. Other than that, also like most have said, the room was too small. When I read small I though small […] by American standards, but in fact the room was small by any standard. The fact of being small, could be also considered a plus since it depicts a bit the Amsterdam notion of expensive land, but this was so small that one of us needed to stay in bed while the other was moving around. Not only was the room small, but is was also very dirty (the carpet floor). On the minus side also was the fact that the last day of our stay we had no heated water, nada, none, niks. Not for shower nor for the hands. We called reception, but they told us that will check and never bothered to call us back to explain what had happened. I would suggest you go for another hotel if possible, but dont get me wrong, this one is bearable for a short duration and if you dont mind the negatives. Catch ya in another hotel somewhere! This hotel is a good location, very near restaurants. The front desk staff is great. Two negatives: the carpet is very stained in the room and the hallway and the shower curtain is not sufficient to keep the water in the shower. The whole bathroom floor will be a lake if you aren't careful.

Great location close to several museums and, most importantly, close to the Heineken Brewery. Walking distance to the Amsterdam Centraal Train Station which can be reached in 30 minutes. The hotel was great. Everything was as described. Breakfast was a little expensive, and not worth the 15 euro. The only complaint, if you can call it a complaint, was that the hotel room itself was exceptionally small. I know I should expect this from Europe, but for the price I expected a little more room to move around. Prior to this, I stayed at […] the Best Western Leidse square, which for less money was slightly nicer and larger, and had free internet / cheaper breakfast. Hotel located in mid way to every place in the city. Easy tram to everywhere. Small but tidy rooms. No smoking was helpfull. Small loby. We used the parking option ,which is cheaper than the City parking lots. We took breakfast outside. The house breakfasts are fair only.

Great location, close to everything. Easy trams from Amsterdam Centraal and then you can walk to practically everywhere you want to go. Just off Leidse Square so you have easy access but a quiet neighbourhood. Our room was very small but clean and had everything. Charming and helpful staff. Great value, overall. We had a compact room, which was small but adequate for just going to sleep at the end of the day. Room was very clean but the bed was very soft and a little saggy. The shower was powerful enough but kept running from hot to cold which was very annoying. The member of staff who greeted us when we checked in was a little brusk but the lady who was there […] to check us out seemed nice enough. We didn't bother with the breakfast as it was an additional 15 Euros (12 if you booked in advance) which I thought was ridiculous and you can find much cheaper, and probably nicer, breakfasts if you walk into town. They did have a free tea and coffee machine, which I thought was great and also free computers with internet access. They also had vending machines in the lobby which were overpriced but very handy when the munchies hit. The hotel was in a great location, near the Vondlepark and only about a 20 minute walk into the town centre. The number 1 tram stops very near it as well which goes right into the town centre. It's also near some nice restaurants and a very nice Belgian bar called Gollem. All in all it was fine as a budget hotel and well located for experiencing Amsterdam. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though who likes a little bit more luxury or to anyone planning to spend considerable time in the hotel. Read more

It is in easy walking distance of Leidesplein and about 15 min walk from Spuistraat. Getting taxis to and from the hotel was easier thanks to its location. Thy do provide coffee and breakfast and the people are helpful. I am pleased with my choice.
