The hotel charged me for the room in addition to the hotels.com fee. They said they "accidentally" charged me. Rundown.The only floor that isn't scary and dirty is the 2nd floor,its been renovated. We found it looking for the pool. Entrance to the pool is on the 2nd floor,then you walk down 3 flights of stairs in a stairwell. There's an exit from the pool to the street to get back to the front of the hotel. Was asked not to exit the pool in this manner. Carpets […] are green,all of them are filthy and old. Out of the 8th floor elevator its bunched up causing you to trip over it.This place is a dorm owned by the University, college kids every where. They weren't disrespectful or too loud. Dinner was limited and expensive, but the Tampa Cuban Sandwich was delish! Breakfast was expensive for limited choice, we took the shuttle to Mcdonalds. The man at the front desk did change my room from the 8th floor to the 2nd after barraging me with questions about what was wrong with our room and disbelieving looks. "Hey buddy, would love to see you even lay in those rooms for a moment. Let alone leave your bags in there." The hotel/dorm is on the RIVERWALK and has a lovely park down the way for kids and family's. A band was playing, they had balloon making,water features to play in and a park for kids with rubber mat for ground. After you pass the Straz center the Riverwalk gets scary if your walking at night or dusk. For the most part the shuttle drivers were great and the shuttle was quick, and free. We left generous tips with several drivers for their outstanding service and personalities. Read more

The Howard Johnson Plaza had some of the best customer service I have ever experienced. The rooms are comfortable and modern, the location is central to anywhere you would like to go in Tampa and they even offer a free shuttle service to literally anywhere in the city complimentary. The room was spacious and clean. There were vending machines and an ice machine on our floor. My only complaint was the shuttle service. It was atrocious. I stayed there on new years eve and apparently they were not prepared for all of the people that stayed there. They only had one shuttle running that night. I stayed here because I was taking the FL Bar Exam and it was nice that the shuttle took us within a 2 mile radius from the hotel to go get food, etc. However, the hotel needs some updating. the bathroom was outdated and the carpet needs to be replaced but it was sufficient for what we needed.

I had difficulty opening my door (the lock was sticking) and I notified the hotel staff every time I tried to get in my room because the door would not open. Although they assured me they would fix it, it was still broken when I checked out. I stayed at the hotel for the location near the convention center and the price. The hotel was going through renovations, so it didn't look very nice at all. There was a bunch of random items being stored in rooms in the back hall. I understand renovations are not easy, but make an effort to try and conceal all the clutter. As someone sensitive to odors, the smell of this place was bothersome enough to comment for others. The hotel is an older building, with signs of its age. There were no full size bath towels. The bed had 3 square, uncomfortable pillows, I was glad to have my own. Overall, the value was still probably worth it, though I could've paid less elsewhere.

I chose this hotel to be close to the convention center but was not at all satisfied. First, the AC unit in my room was malfunctioning throughout my stay. The fan would sputter constantly which made it sound like a lawnmower was running in room. Seeing it was July in Florida, turning the AC off was not an option. The front desk told me there was nothing […] they could do and couldn’t give me another room because the hotel was sold out. Second, the room was in poor condition. The bathroom tiles were broken and the sink dripped constantly, the TV was an old tube TV with poor picture quality, and the walls were so thin that I could hear every conversation that the people above, below, and next to me were having. The room really has the feel of a cheap roadside motel. Third, the housekeeping staff was unnecessarily rude. When I arrived at my room, the mini shampoo and mouthwash both were missing half their contents and had obviously been used by someone else. When I told a member of the housekeeping staff about this problem and requested new toiletries, the housekeeper told me the hotel doesn’t give out extra items for people to take home. I tried to explain to her that the items were already used when I checked in and she implied that I was lying her just to get free things to take home. There are plenty of other hotels in the area to choose from that would be a much better option. Avoid this place unless you absolutely have to stay at the cheapest place in the area. Read more

This was one of the worst hotels I had ever stayed at. It made LaQuinta look like a 5 star hotel. The room was tiny, unlike the photos. The corridor carpet was full of dark stains, needed a desperate paint job, and the staff wasn't very helpful.

The hotel is convenient to downtown attractions, like concerts. It was under renovation so not the cleanest we've been in. The bar and restaurant have a great deal of potential, but the restaurant is only open for breakfast. The bar didn't have many bar "tools" necessary for specialty drinks.

The bed was very comfortable to my surprise, the building is old but well kept. I would stay here again with friends or by myself. FYI this part of Tampa has no parking at the hotels, you must pay to park everywhere. Real close to downdown Tampa had a great stay.
