"It is what I would call a Motel not a hotel."
was sufficant, beds were way to small. We are twos grown adults (not big) and the bed was way to small. no fun sleeping with feet hanging offGenuine Expedia guest review
When we first arrived it was late and we were a little apprehensive about the hotel; but from then on we really enjoyed our stay. We had an ocean front balcony on the 2nd floor and really loved the view. The staff were all very warm, friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very pleasant and great for breakfast and lunch. "Decent hotel, excellent beach"
The Sandcastle was recently sold to a hotel group that plans to renovate the rooms, but not tear down and rebuild. I think a little freshening will do wonders--especially the baths. That being said, this was a great property with a magnificent beach and lots to do nearby. Hopefully the update will not cause rates to soar, as I would love to return!Genuine Expedia guest review
"best vacation and best resort ever!"
the hotel and the location were abolutely outstanding!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Excellent..............very accomodatingGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Loved the location. They updated patio/pool furniture while we were there. So they are maintaining and looks like updating in phases. Rooms a bit small for four and could use complete update. We have 2 teenagers. It would be nice when they update rooms to have vanity outside bathroom. That would help. Restaurant needs updated also. Loved the feature […] of being able to eat breakfast/ lunch on patio and they offer great breakfast buffet. I would stay again but if they have not updated look for a larger room. Queen beds are preferred. The location....excellent!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice hotel with great service"
We booked this hotel because of its location right on the water and the reasonable prices, compared to other newer hotels. This hotel was nicer than we had expected, given the reviews that talked about it being somewhat dated. Yes, there were parts that were dated, but the lobby and outdoor areas were very nice, clean and well staffed. The rooms were […] clean and an average size. We got an ocean front room, which was great. The pool was well staffed and the staff set up chairs and umbrellas on the beach every day. The only thing to note is that this section of Lido Beach does not have a grocery store, so you have to drive about 10 minutes to get to one. Just requires a little advanced planning. So, overall, be realistic about what you want and what a hotel offers. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"We love this place"
we know many of the staff and were happy to see our friends there. the new things, 2 bottles of water, 3 hours of bicycle rental and free umbrella or the cabannas were ok but we never used the bikes. the new $28.00 fee is still up in the air with us. we love staying here, and find many people are regulars.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Perfect FAMILY Beach Location"
My family and I stayed 4 days/3nights. When we arrived, first time in the Lido Beach area, and I didn't know what to expect after reading some of the reviews. You won't get fancy fountains, elaborate fixtures, or fancy furniture. It is truly a Hotel frozen in time…reminded me of “Sunny Motel’s” from The Adam Sandler movie Bedtime Stories. The Beach […] is lined with high rise condo’s and right next door is the elaborate Ritz Carlton. But, this hotel is special. It is not filled with pretentious people. It was filled with families. Families who are there to enjoy the beach, eat breakfast next to the pool, and enjoy their vacation. We walked the beach several mornings and aside from the public beach areas, this is the ONLY beach property with PLENTY of beach front space for playing in the sand, building sand castles, and lounging in your chair WITHOUT being right on top of the person next to you!!! We paid extra for the beach view, and it was worth every penny. GREAT budget conscious hotel. There are no nearby stores and very few places to eat unless you drive/walk over to St. Armand's Circle, for Shopping, Dining, Entertainment and much more. Stop at the Publix on your way in…there is a frig in the room (a feature that is hard to find.) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"I'd Go Back"
Overall, very nice. They should maintain their vending machines, because there was not a chip to be found after hours...! And the employees either weren't aware or don't want to deal with it, because I was sent on several wild goose chases all over the grounds to find a machine that worked, which did not exist. Also, large racoons roam the grounds at […] night....Other than that a very pleasant stay! Next time I'll bring snacks. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"GREAT LOCATION !"
We loved being right on the beach, having a restaurant right there at the hotel and the free shuttle service to St. Armonds was great as it is a busy area and parking could be an issue. The hotel is older but very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I definitely want to go back to The Sandcastle.Genuine Expedia guest review
"On the beach!!! Nice pools and staff. Outdated."
Room was clean but desperately needs updating. Bathroom was very cramped...if you are bigger than average, shower/tub is tiny. The outdoors, staff and location make up for it. 2 pools, bar service at the pool, beautiful beach with chairs and towels provided! The staff is very friendly too. Parking is good and you're only a mile from Armand's circle. […] Food at the hotel wasn't great, but lots of restaurants nearby. The hotel says it has a coffee shop but it's just some carafes with coffee-you add your own cream, etc. hardly a coffee shop. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"DON'T STAY HERE!!!"
Unless you like places that are 30 yeas out of date, marginally clean and its' guests are more like trailer park people. The hot, musty room, the lumpy bed and cement bag pillows were just some of the reasons I checked out after 1 night, even though I had prepaid for 3 nights. And don't even think about going in the pool, it's disgusting.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"right on the beach near St. Armand circle"
Good location, but the hotel is dated. I'm guessing it will be torn down in a few years and a new high rise built. The rooms were quite and the pool was heated and warm. there is a nice big beach.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It is what it is."
Great pool and beach access along with great beach staff and rentals. Bottom line the place is old and needs some room improvements but we have stayed four different times at this hotel and never had a complaint about it. Great place for the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Loved our piece of the Sandcastle!!"
Hotel was very nice and close to many things. Staff was helpful. Room was nice and roomy--plenty of room for the roll out we required. We opened our door to the deck and there was the ocean. So refreshing after the winter we have had up north. Pool was nice and warm although ocean was a bit cool. We really enjoyed our stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great place with beautiful big pools and on the beach. Staff was all friendly and beach guy was outstanding. However lady bartender by the pool was very crabby. Breakfast buffet was worth the money. . . Great food.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great Hotel - stuck in old times"
This hotel has everything you could ever want, except it's not modern. Had a great time, -great location, great pools, great for families. Would love to come back again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is old and could use updating. However, I was there for the beach, not the hotel. It was clean and comfortable and the staff was very accommodating. Also, it's in a great location. I would definitely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a good sleep."
We could hear through the wall the family next door.We asked to be moved the next day and was however the new room was located on the lower floor next to the dumpster and maintnance area. We was waken at 1:10am in the morning by a loud leaf blower or lawn mower noise it stop for a moment and began again then stopped. One morning we was waken by someone […] dumpimg glass bottles into the dumpster. I didn't like that gradutity was added to each drink and food puchase at the hotel. I like to tip the waitess based upon the service that is provided. There was two incidents with waitesses to where I wouldn't have tip because of there attitude. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Little gem on the beach"
I loved this nice little hotel right on the beach. Location is great, the rooms are comfortable and clean. The hotel is a little on the older side, but that is definitely its charm. The hotel provides plenty clean towels and beach chairs, paddle boards for rent and other sport equipments. There is a pool side bar, which serves food and drinks. The hotel charges rates that are way too high for an old 50's motel on the beach. The place re nice, the location is lovely but the beach is eroded and the rooms are fine if the rate was $150. It is deceptive and unfair to the foreigners who stay there to charge as if it were a 3 star hotel. It's rates have not been reviewed since 2008 by public officers […] and should be adjusted to the currently reality. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Ownership failed to reinvest"
My wife and I spent two nights here. The heater/air conditioner did not function correctly, and the faucet in the shower failed to work correctly. To give the staff credit, both items were addressed by maintenance men who came to our room for repairs. The funny thing was, we were told by the man working the front desk when we checked in that we were […] "upgraded". It appears that the rooms are dated, and zero dollars have been used to upgrade or modernize the rooms. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Beautiful view of the water and sunsets!"
We had a great, but brief, stay at The Sandcastle. Great location on the beach with spectacular sunset views. Staff and room service were excellent. The only negative is that the rooms need some updating and the carpet was badly stained.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Really not worth it"
Nothing has been updated since the 80s. They wanted $9 for a double espresso! So we didn't even try the dining room. The pool bar had a very limited drink selection. "Great old florida hotel"
The Sandcastle was great as long as you know it's old time Florida. The rooms facing the Gulf I'm sure are wonderful. Our room faced the pool which was darling, but it was was very loud during breakfast setup time (very early about 6 am) and when the newspaper cart went down the walkway - also early in the am. The staff was terrific and very responsive […] and it was very clean. Great beach and location on the key. Our room was the perfect location facing the ocean. Perfect location, only 1 mile walk to St. Armand's. Pleasant walk in the a.m. to get our morning coffee. Our room was very clean and the beds were comfy. There was a refrigerator in our room and was wonderful to have. Flat screen T.V. in our room, terrific for watching the Olympics! "some concerns, will probably not stay again"
great location, older hotel. Rooms have unusual double pipe climate control system which cannot respond to cool nights, warm days cycle. They do offer space heaters and fans. "Out of date"
Room was in a corridor looking into parking garage. No heat as their system is either heat or air and they were on air. Brought us a space heater. Electrical plugs were not set up for modern devices. "80's called and whant their hotel back!"
The hotel has not been remodeledsince the 80's and it shows. Everything is a little tired and out of date. The room smelled overpoweringly of bleach. The beds were as hard as rocks. The location is nice but far from everything but the beach.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Wonderful beach hotel"
The Sandcastle is a vintage (1960s era) beachfront hotel nestled among much newer condos along Lido Beach. But it has been well maintained and the staff there is courteous and friendly. They know most of the regular snow bird guests by first name. The hotel is very close to St. Armond's Circle shopping and dining. And sunsets at the beach, of course, […] are stunning. We hope the new owners of this mid-century Classic take loving care of the place because we'd love to return. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"An Oldie but Goodie!"
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay at the Helmsley Sandcastle! It is an older hotel but the location and service more than make up for it's age. "Older but nice hotel on lovely beach property"
Joined relatives for Super Bowl weekend and enjoyed it thoroughly. Close by shopping in St. Armonds Circle was a joy. We had a lovely dinner outside at an Italian restaurant there. "2 nights @ Helmsley"
This place is really run down in general, and has no class. The front desk service was very professional and friendly, but the place just needs a major facelift. Room was OK, nice fabrics and decently clean, but the hotel overall is tired and dated. Dining menu limited and service not great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Last Minute Stay Was Lovely"
We decided at the last minute to spend a night in Sarasota and found rooms at the Helmsley Sandcastle. It proved to be a good decision. Although the hotel could use some updating, the staff was warm and friendly, the hotel sits right on the beach, everything was very clean, and the restaurant was excellent.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great homely hotel, incredible staff."
I was there for a total of 8 days (two 4 day stays), and while the rooms were a bit dated, the staff more than made up for it. Best hotel staff I have dealt with (I have over 2 million miles on AA, so I've been in lots of hotels). Very friendly and helpful. In fact, I'll be back there again next year.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, needs alot of updating."
Parking garage was convenient to the room. Room and bath has not been updated for decades. Bathroom very small. Great beach location. Luckily we didn't have to spend much time in the room. Walked the beach and saw dolphins. Then drove a couple of miles to Longboat Key Town Center. Ate at Crab & Fin (highly recommended).Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good on-the-beach experience"
Good over-all. Friendly, helpful staff. Fine beach access. Decent restaurant. Two pools. Facilities are fine, but could use some upgrading. The hotel has just been sold, so who knows what comes next?Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Because we booked online we were first given an awful room next to the hotel garage think it was # 250. The room was musty and seemed of mold and immediately affected my breathing. I called the front desk and we were assigned to another room. The second room was just OK but at least it didn't smell; however, the bathroom was not nice and you could hear […] all the noise from the people above us. What I don't understand is that most of the units were vacant so why didn't they give us a nicer room the first time. They did however offer a great breakfast for $9.00 per person.
