I've been staying at the Whitehall since the late '80s through various remodels and owners. It is a decent hotel with a great location in a safe area, 1/2 block off Michigan Ave. The hotel could use a sprucing up as the finishes are a bit tired but it is a good value, especially over the holidays.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Comfortable stay. Great neighborhood"
Great location off of Michigan AveGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good with the bad."
It was a pleasant stay for the most part. I had a queen room right off the elevator so you could distinctively hear patrons and workers right outside the door. This could be bothersome for most, but I was by myself and it was tolerable. The room was very neat and clean. Only things that were a bit troublesome were the tv kept freezing on me, and although […] I had the thermostat turned all the way up and the auto fan off, my room was very cold for most of my stay and would not go above 65 degrees. In any other type of weather this may have been comfortable. Seeing it is winter in Chicago at the moment made it almost uncomfortably chilly in the room at all times. Also, when checking out, only one of the elevators was operating which was inconvenient because the elevators have a maximum capacity of 5 people. Very small since a lot of people tend to check out around the same time. Overall, it was a decent stay. You can't beat the location and everything is centrally located and easy to access. "Small boutique hotel in Chicago."
Great location in downtown Chicago off of Michigan Avenue. Lots of shops and restaurants in the neighborhood. Older hotel that was renovated in the past 10 years. Lovely rooms with a restaurant and bar downstairs. I would like a coffeemaker in the room, but they do provide complementary coffee downstairs in the morning from 7 to 11 a.m. If you receive […] a room on the alley, be prepared to hear trash trucks, etc. about 6:00 a.m. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was just ok. The room was smaller then expected. The bathroom had small things broken and shower plumbing backwards, while the toilet is awkwardly placed in the middle. The hotel did have a very excellent staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Always a pleasure"
Great little hotel. Great location and service. Rooms are small but comfortable and immaculate.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Clean, small but perfect for a "girl trip" with my daughter.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Boutique Hotel Exceeded Expectations"
The hotel exceeded my expectations from beginning to end. The valet was always friendly and timely. The people at the front desk were helpful and did everything we asked. The concierge had several off the beaten path recommendations. The room was large and the king-sized bed lived up to its expectation as being one of the most comfortable around. The […] room had a great view of the John Hancock Buiding and Water Tower place and we could even see a corner of the New Year Eve fireworks at Navy Pier. The bathroom was OK, but could use an upgrade. And the hotel is in an excellent location, just a half block from Michigan Avenue and two blocks from Oak Street. Friendly Staff. Great Location. Nice room. Great beds and pillows Always love this place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Pictures on internet shows the rooms a lot Bigger....rooms are really small. The lounge closes based on how many people show up. Sometimes we went down for a night cap at 9and they were closedGenuine Expedia guest review
"Best price for what you get"
One of the best locations on Chicago. Modern and comfortable bed. Towels should be renewed, kinda old, same as aisles carpeting. Overall a great hotel, I would stay there againGenuine Expedia guest review
"Ok room in great location"
Hotel feels compressed and the lobby/restaurant areas are not impressive. But the room was clean and bed was comfortable. The closet door was broken and the shower is not comfortable; but being close to Michigan Ave at this price is pretty solid.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Ok to stay"
We enjoyed the location of this hotel. We were walking distance to everything and the local transit was easy to use. The hotel is nice but very old. The rooms were clean and nice, but space was small. The staff was nice and answered any questions we had but not overly helpful or friendly. We only stayed one night otherwise I would have wanted to stay […] at a different hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"They aim to please!"

"Decent experience but would go elsewhere first."
First room we were put into REEKED of smoke. Immediately went back down to the front desk where they were very apologetic and placed us in another room. No complaint, it happens, and then it was taken care of immediately. The second room was great, a little dated, but great. In fact aside from the lobby, the whole hotel could use a bit of a refresh […] with cracked paint and peeling wallpaper in spots. Also a bit frustrating to not have any vending available. Old building, I get it but the $3 mini-coke in the mini-fridge was not quite going to cut it. Overall a good experience but with the other options in the same are and price range, I would probably go elsewhere first. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beds were amazing!"
The staff for the most part was very courteous. Except for Danny, he was absolutely amazing and went above and beyond for my wife and I. Room service stayed on top of everything and even organized our bathroom counter toiletries. The location was perfect, literally just a couple miles tops away from everything. I would definitely stay at this hotel […] again. Oh, and the bellman, he was awesome also. I didn't have any cash on me to tip my driver so the bellman gave me $10 of his own money, which I have never encountered before. I returned the favor by giving him $20 in return, to which I had to force him to take almost. Stay classy Chicago! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We stayed for two nights. Our room was on the 21st floor with a great view of Chicago. The room was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Also the resturant food was good but mostly asian but that was also great as my wife is Chinese.Highly recommend as it is close to everything.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great Historic Boutique Hotel-poor experience"
All in all the Whitehsall is a sonderful boutique hotel. I have stayed there before adn woudl recommend it. The location is perfect if you want to stay on the Gold Coast in Chicago. The hotel is old, but renovated and very clean. The room was simple. The service is good, but they did not go out of their way to be friendly or accommodating. They need […] to have a coffee maker or a device for making hot water IN the room. I inquired around 5:00pm the night before if there was access to hot water for making tea in the room. They said, "No, but could bring hot water to the room. I told them, "No thank you and went out. At 12:00am midnight there as a knocking on my door. When I asked who it was a man answered, "Me". He did not say room service or hospitality. I asked again. Again."Me."I asked what he wanted and he said he had hot water for me. I did not open the door and told him I did not order hot water. I tried to call the front desk on the hotel phone, but it didn't work. The call was not out of fear, but I wanted to inform them of the mistake and that their phone did not work. I used my cell. They apologized. I informed them again when I checked out. They apologized. Out of courtesy it would have been nice if they made a note on my record and apologized again at check out before I informed them again. After all it was a midnight knock. Good choice Great location Good service Right priceGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Friendly staff, great location, beautiful bar. Very old school and good feeling. Helpful valet went and grabbed things from our car after it was put away and brought it up to our room. Debbie from the front desk was awesome!!! Little bit dirty in the room. Comforter could have been a little cleanerGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, old world charm"
Doorman looked like he wanted to be somewhere else when we arrived. Next morning's doorman was much nicer and engaged. Front desk staff very friendly. First floor is really small, almost non-existent lobby. Room was small, accommodations were nice, but wallpaper is starting to curl at seams and bathroom had a bad urine smell--clearly the base had not […] been cleaned in a long time and had gross build-up. Bed pillows were great but mattress was hard--even for my husband who likes hard beds. Told the front desk and they wrote it down and promised to tell management so they could make changes. "Great hotel...don't do valet parking. Not worth it"
Great location, great price, great hotel. I had eaten some bad food the day before and the room service staff was very helpful for helping find food for an upset stomach. Everything was great except for the valet parking. $57 a night and no one picked up and i had to go down to the front desk for someone to find the person. It was early in the morning, […] but by 6 am someone should be there or have a phone on them. So i paid $114 to still have to wait in the lobby 20 minutes each morning. Not worth it! Everything else was great and if it hadn't been for that i would have given the hotel 5 stars. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Two major disappointments in an otherwise pleasant"
The personnel were very pleasant, and the room was comfortable and clean. However, in America (contrary to European custom), visitors legitimately expect a washcloth for their showers, and there was none to be found in the bathroom. I was forced to use the soap with no washcloth. Secondly, at the time of the reservation, I was not told that there was […] an extra charge of $57.00 for overnight valet parking for my vehicle, which added significantly to the cost of the room. I might have still reserved the room, the price of which was reasonable, but did not appreciate having this unexpected extra expense forced upon me after I arrived late in the evening. "good boutique hotel"
The two great restaurants were a real benefit to this hotel on miracle mile. The room and facilities were also first rate for a budget price even around the holidays. Unfortunately I could get the heating system to work properly. Despite a thermostat temperature of 66, the heat continued to blast and I woke up to a 76-degree room!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Landmark hotel right off Michigan Avenue."
Close to shopping, dining, in great neighborhood.Comfortable accomodations, nice amenities.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Super comfortable beds. nice clean room. great neighborhood close to Michigan Ave and Rush streetGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Stayed for one night. Room and bathroom very clean. Decor overall maybe a bit dated. Staff very friendly. Had no view (4th floor) but did not matter, since most of the time was spent outside of the room anyway. Close to good food, a bit far to walk (especially with luggage) from the Red Line Subway. Would stay there again. Bed was VERY comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel in the heart of Downtown"
The Whitehall Hotel was a very pleasant experience. We thought the pictures looked great but when we arrived everything was better than expected! Everything was working great except for the safe which needed a nudge to get open, but it doesn't take away from the overall excellent rating. Thanks to all the courteous and helpful staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
