My wife and I stayed 6 nights and seven days at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. We arrive from the airport by train - suggested by hotel- and since we basically had one siutcase and two carry-ons, this was simple and safe! The location of this hotel is close to free trolley to Navy Pier, to public busses and to the Hop On/Hop Off Trolley […] stop so we were able to travel around without a car. The Concierge desk was most knowledgeable about great places to eat breakfast, lunch and dinners as well as how to get around Chicago easily and economically. They also have clear and detailed info about music venues and theatre productions as well as museums and great parks to explore. We even got info on how to get to Frank Lollyd Wrights House in suburb of city.We only used a taxi to get back to the airport on our final day in Chicago. Our room was clean, comfortable king bed, and quiet even though only on 10th floor. The baggage check station held our bags until our room was ready on day we arrived and then until our flight on the day we left. Both the staff and the citizens of Chicago were very friendly and helpful about travelling on busses and walking to locales. The three day trolley pass was a good deal - gave discount entry to museums, privieged entry (no lines) and discounts on gifts from the museum shops. Like a typical big-city hotel, the rooms and beds are a little smaller, but the view from the floor to ceiling window was amazing! Arrived at 3:50 and was told our room wouldn't be ready for awhile (check in is 4pm). Didn't offer an apology and wouldn't predict when we could check in. She said they had a lot of early check-ins and at that point it was "first come first served." What? Very poor service. Was immediately given $50 credit, a sincere apology, an explanation (cleaning staff delayed by extensive vandalism in stairwells) and a prediction. We had a nice stay in Chicago at the Marriott. The hotel check in was very pleasant, and the king room worked well for our family of four. We have two young children (3 and 5) who used the pull out couch, and they were happy with the sleeping arrangement. There is a free, seasonal shuttle to Navy Pier that has a stop not far from the hotel, and we'd recommend using it. The museums are a quick cab ride away, or you can take the water taxi which is fun. The fitness facility worked well. The one area for improvement was the pool - water temperature was fine, and the area surrounding the pool was nice, but the pool itself was small and very crowded. My best friend and I came to Chicago for a weekend getaway. Staying on the Magnificent Mile is always an important part of the experience. Booking with the Marriott brings a certain expecation; one that failed to deliver. I called the hotel at 10:00 on the morning of our stay to find out if an early check in was possible. The female employee said it […] was not, that check in was at 4:00pm, but the bellhop could hold our bags. Disappointing, but not surprising. After a long day of walking around the city, we made it back to the hotel at 3:30 to find out if we could check in - or wait until 4 to get our room. The (extremely snooty) female desk agent let me know that if I had "pre-registered" this wouldn't be a problem. Excuse me? We had no idea this was possible! This is why I called in the morning to ask about checking in. She said the best she could do was call us when the room opened up. We waited until after 6:30 to get into our room. Entirely unacceptable. The room was clean and comfortable, and the beds were nice. However, it stayed stuffy and humid no matter how low we turned the air. At 7:45am, housekeeping pounded on our door to clean - jarring us awake and scaring us half to death. We did not appreciate that so early in the morning after a night out. Every staff member we encountered was terribly rude. Another huge problem: I was charged way more than what Expedia promised. This hotel will never be visited by me again. "Great Location BUT Noisy and Crowded"
The lobby looked like a convention was going on. SO loud and hard to dodge all the people just to get to the elevators. The person who checked us in was quite unpleasant. The hallway to our room looked very drab and dated. Our room was small and the windows on the 19th floor overlooked a concrete slab below. The first night we could hear our next door […] neighbors talking - they weren't yelling and we could make out everything they were saying. We kept the TV on just to drown them out. No fan in the bathroom so we could hear the people above us going to the bathroom. And when you took a shower it was so foggy - it took a long time for the steam to go away. We also didn't have hot water for the second person taking a shower and that was an hour after the first person finished about a 15 minute shower. The second night we came home just before midnight and could smell smoke in the hall and it was like there was a party going on. Young kids were racing in the hallway.
